Nice turn-based strategy game

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 16 / 19

If you're a fan of turn-based strategy games this game should meet your expectations. It's got nice graphics, easy to play, and can be played in all modes (single player, Wi-Fi, and Infrastructure). It has enough unit types with varying strengths/weaknesses to allow many defensive/offensive strategic decisions to be made. It's like playing a complex and dynamic game of chess.

All in all I've been satisfied with this game and would recommend it for turn based strategy fans.

A lot of fun for fans of Advance Wars but ONLINE!

If you have ever played Advance Wars on the GBA or DS you will be VERY familiar with Field Commander. This game is almost EXACTLY the same. From joining damaged forces together as one unit, using a super, flying in troops, taking over buildings, etc. It is ALL in there. The few differences that I have noticed are the ability of a trooper to lay mines, shoot out trees to make a path, Satellite strikes, Napalm etc.. and being able to double stack aircraft on one playing spot.

The gameplay is as fun if not better than AW but with some great online modes. There is a two player swap back and forth, AD-HOC and direct online modes. The Transmit mode is great for those long games. The ability to transmit a game back and forth makes for a (chess like) multi-day game session. You can simply set up a game and transmit for an online player. Make all your moves then transmit and come back when the other player makes his move. Get this game if you are a fan of Strategy Games and love being able to control an Army on the go.

Remember to keep your aircraft fueled before they crash!

The best turned based strategy for the PSP

Its no secret that this game "heavily borrows" almost all of it's elements from the GameBoy's Advance Wars series. However, speaking as a big fan of Advance Wars, this is a good thing. This is because the basic elements of the original series have been expanded and improved upon, and that doesn't even take into account the superior graphics and on-line multiplayer capabilities of the PSP.

The PROS:
1) Many different unit types.
2) Many different CO's and divisions with various abilities.
3) Good graphics.
4) Shallow learning curve. Easy to pick up and play.
5) Multiplayer capability.

The CONS:
1) Computer AI has occasional lapses in judgment making it easy to beat at times.
2) Maps could be bigger.

There is a story mode in the single player campaign, but if you find this annoying its as easy to skip over as hitting the "X" button, and its nowhere near as annoying as the one in Advance Wars.

If you liked the Advance War series, you will love Field Commander (unless you're a hopeless Nintendo fanboy). This is a turned based strategy game that is well worth picking up.

A great game to play anytime!

Field Commander is and excellent game that nearly all PSP players can enjoy. Simple warfare to start off with can evolve into tricky situations that can make or break your ATLAS career. Very fun for anytime whether you're playing for kicks or want to kick the [...]a friend in hotswap mode.

Best PSP game I've played

I don't have a DS, but otherwise I agree with what they said up there. Great game. One issue with online play is people are just disconnecting to avoid a loss, so this makes the online leaderboard mainly useless. But if you don't care about rating, nevermind.

All in all, I have played maybe 7 PSP games and this is the best.

Great Game w/ Unlimited Replayability

Field Commander Full Length Review!

Field Commander was released May 23, 2006, and is a great Turn- Based Strategy game, very similar to Advanced Wars. Rated T for violence and Blood.

Story- You have been recruited by ATLAS, an advanced organization built to fight covert groups that terrorize, incite wars, trade in the black market. You have missions in which you take turns, and must either destroy all enemies, or capture the enemy's HQ. You can fight on Air, Sea, Or land. There are many different types of units, including tanks, half Tracks, infantry, snipers, Tank Busters, Utility Copters, Spec ops, Trucks, Anti Aircrafts, and so on. I give this a 9.1/10 since it's good, but not really origonal.

Graphics- When moving, you are at a eagle's eye view, then once you attack, or get attacked, you move to a spectators view. The grapics are pretty good, but can be improved. This might be the worst thing about the game, and considering it's not at all that bad, you already know that the game's going to be great! However, the graphics are still pretty good, and the animation is great. The environment is polished, and looks beautiful, so I give this a 8.1/10

Sound- The background music that plays while enjoying the game fits in perfectly, as it's typical war music. Sort of like the music that plays in Halo , or a game like that. And all the voice ins are great, since they're unique for the 30+ ppl that are in this game! There is about 40 minutes of talking in this game from breifing and overviews. This is a great addition to the game, so I give it a 9.5/10

Controls- The controls are easy to use, and doesn't take much getting used to. Maybe 20 minutes at the most. You don't much more than simply the X button, but if you do, it's [] to view your attack range, and when clicked once more, you can view your movement range (the spaces are shaded). Click once more to exit it. You use Triangle to read info on the unit. O is to go to the next unit, and then you can assign that unit a move. The Analog Stick rotates the camera, and the D pad moves from space to space. And Finally, R to see a Mini map. It's pretty simple, so I give this a 9.3/10

Gameplay- Field Commander is a PSP exclusive, and fits well on the PSP. You can pick it up and play, and when you need to go, you can simply save where you are to play whenever you want! In other words, you can save inbetween missions. It had smooth gameplay, although it froze up for 1 or 2 seconds after you assign a unit an order and it's goes from the eagle eye view to the "spectators" view. So, I gave it a 8.6/10

Difficulty- This game can get somewhat frustrating, as well as difficult, and at times, you get stuck. Like me. There's no way to change the difficulty, so you just have to keep on trying, until you finally win. It usually takes me 3-4 tries on every level to defeat the enemy. It's a little harder than the normal game, but still managable, earning itself an 8.4/10

Multiplayer Options- Okay, now this may as well be the BEST part of the game. It featurs Hot Swap (where 2 ppl take turns playing eachother on 1 PSP), AD HOC, Infrasacture, and Transmission Mode. You can upload and download courses that other users have made, thus making it ETERNAL REPLAYABILITY There are Leaderboards, as well. Unfortunetly, the games take as long as 2 hours (my first game took an hour and a half, and I never finished). This part of the game is great, earning a well deserved 9.6/10!

Replay Value- With the ability to make and share user made levels, this game has eternal Replayability! The campaign mode takes a while, and once you're done with that, you can enjoy all the courses that are online, as well as finally take the time to read about every vehicle (once you see a new vehicle, it gives you a LOT of information on it, that's useless, but interesting). So, this definetly gets a 10/10 on this part!

Loading Times- The loading times in this game are great everywhere, except for in the beginning of the game where it takes like 30 seconds to load up But, while starting a mission, the loading times are a mere 15 seconds... at the most! It's great to just pick up and play. I give the loading times a 9.2/10!

Overall- This game is a great asset to the PSP game collection, and one of the best games out, earning itself a 9.2/10! It has Great Multiplayer Options, Eternal Replayability, Easy and Simple Controls.. You name it, and it has it! Get this game, and I know you'll enjoy it!

The game is a role play based, move for move. I enjoy it and I have played countless hours on it already. I will be looking for the sequel

Overview:
A turn based strategy game, that is heavy on the strategy, with a military theme.

Graphics: 7
It's ok. I mean it's a nifty 3D env, but most of the time, you'll be viewing from the top, where it turns into 2D. And once you get into competitive online play, you'll almost always entirely skip the 3D view animations. One particular quirk that I have is that the group units are represented as a single unit. E.g., a infantry unit is represented as a single person, rather than a group of people. It looks a bit odd when a tank goes against an infantry unit. But nothing horrendous really.

Sound: 8
Very good, imho. Having been a RTS player, I've looked for the sound cues relevant to the gameplay. So far, the most obvious and important one I've noticed is this sound that enemy units make when they enter stealth. There are others - such as when the enemy uses the factory, for e.g.. And all the vocals, the "yes, sir!" type of responses, are pretty clear and well done.

Gameplay: 8
Excellent. It's hard core think before you shoot type of a strategy game. Think something like Risk or Chess, with far more complex rules. And while balance isn't perfect, it's actually better balanced then any other RTS/TBS games I've played so far.

Story: 3
Yeah, whatever. The campaign mode is fun, and it'll last you a few weeks. But it's also pretty easy to beat, and the story is certainly no RPG. The campaign mode unlocks new divisions that you can use, so it is definitely worthwhile.

Vs: 8
Here's the real meat of this game. Fixed maps are a disappointment, and the SOE server and matchmaking system leaves a lot to be desired. That said, the game allows quite a few methods of Vs play- Hot Swap, Ad-Hoc, Infrastructure, and Transmission. I've tried all of these but Ad-Hoc, and I must say, Vs play is fun. Hot Swap allows two player play with one psp- very convenient feature when introducing the game to a friend of yours. Infrastructure - pretty good. The SOE server tends to disconnect, but the system does have methods to save and rehost. And since many of the PSP games do not have Infrastructure, I'd say that this is a huge selling point. Transmission - I have to say, that this is quite the saving grace for many. It allows the game to be played slowly, over days and weeks, for the busy gamer who can only spend small portions of their day to gaming. It does have its weaknesses, but it's not bad at all.

Replay Value: 8
As noted, the lack of random maps is a huge disappointment, and seriously cuts down on the replay value. That said, even with this lack, the game does offer you quite a few maps that you can play on, and online vs mode does offer quite a bit. This category would have been a 10 if random maps were present.

Overall: 8
It's a PSP strategy game designed for the current median gamer profile (i.e., grew up on games, now in their 30's, with a busy RL). Not bad at all, and there's no equal like it on the PSP at the moment.

Good Game

This game is like a mini C&C game that is almost as envolved. Put it in fast forward once you get tired of the attack/defend sequences and it moves along at a good pace.
