This is going to be the ultimate Unreal

The Unreal series has been around for many years now, and this is the upcoming sequel to the Xbox hit Unreal Championship. That was among the five best selling Xbox first person shooters ever, along with other titles such as Bungie's Halo and EA Games' 007 Nightfire. It wasent quite perfect though, and the best part about it was arguably playing online, but it was a mildly entertaining frag fest. More could have been done though to revolutionize the aging franchise. However, what I have read and seen on Unreal Championship 2 looks really, really good. You can play in first person or third person view. People who have played an early version of this title have said that third person view is fun, and will be more natural feeling than you might think. So dont be skepticle just yet! This time around, Atari also wont be doing the honors of publishing it. Midway will sell the game this time around, though Epic Games is still handling developement. Not that any of that matters, its just interesting to know. The new guns are wicked cool, and cause massive destruction, while the graphics system has been greatly improved (hopefully the frame rate will be better and there will be absolutely no lag this time around). Although I gave this five stars, this is really not a final review. If you are an Unreal fan, FPS gamer or an avid Xbox Live player, though, pre-order this game today... To be nice, I'll give this five stars.

AWESOME

I just bought this game yesterday and it is awesome beyond my high expectations. The graphics are great and they managed to have a pretty good single player campaign to get you ready for the best part of this game, online play. UC2 and Halo 2 are the only two games I own due to the high replay value on the online modes. I also really liked Doom 3 and Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, but once I beat them in a couple of days I went ahead and sold them. This game is a must buy for all those who like action games where the chaos never ends.

What happened??

What happened to Unreal? This used to be THE shooter. Now its just become a mess. The single player is annoying, you can only play Anubis and he SUX!!. The melee really falls short. If your not a tank then you die really quick. The combos are laughable, all you do is hold the right trigger and hope you don't die before the other guy. The weapons which I thought would be the shining light are horrible. The only one that does enough damage to make a difference is the Rocket launcher which gets old really quick. What is with the Nalhi hunt, how lame do you want to be. I don't care about Xbox live because all its gonna be is people jumping around like idiots, with that "unpresedented mobility" firing rockets at each other. I really tried to like this game but it just isn't any fun. And a game should be fun.

The Unreal series finally delivers on a console!!

With most first person shooter games, having a mouse and keyboard is simply a most effective way to control the game, so the developers at Midway decided to take a different approach to the series. What we have now is a game that is a mix between a first person shooter (counterstrike, halo, doom) and a 3rd person action game (devil may cry, jedi knight: jedi outcast).
The balance feels just right. You start each match picking 1 of 4 power weapons (flak cannon, rockets, ripjack, or grenade launcher) and 1 of 4 secondary weapons (sniper, machine gun...) And of course you have your melee close range weapon which is different for each character you pick. Some characters have two swords, some have a claws, some have broadswords, some have sickles etc. As a first person shooter if you only use rockets etc, or if you only use melee weapons you are only experiencing half the game. You have to learn how and when to utilize the strengths of both the guns and the swords. The swords by the way are way cool cuz you can fly across the level for a one kit kill and you can reflect any type of bullets back at an attacker if you time it right. The game also has an easy to use "adrenaline" system. Basically the more people you kill the more adrenaline you have. Once you have enough adrenaline you can choose to use it on temporary abilities (extra speed, higher jumping, healing, defense shield, increased vision etc.) So part of the game also is knowing when to use your adrenaline. For instance if you just picked up the flag, it might be a good time to use that speed boost.
Anyone familiar to the unreal franchise will be familiar with the "mutators" in the game. basically when you start your own multiplayer game you can have the game tweaked with low gravity, one hit kill, snipers only, quadruple jumps, and many more you can balance the game to your liking, which means the game never really gets old.
The maximum # of players online is 8 which may pale in comparison to other online games, but any more than 8 people is really too many. The maps don't feel cluttered this way.
The game by the way has 40 maps, which is pretty impressive since each has its own unique feel. There are jump pads, teleporters, walljumping areas, and a good overall flow of the levels. Oh and raiden from the mortal kombat series is a playable unlockable character (he throws lighting from his hands!!)

In conclusion:
PROS:
-good balance of melee weapons/regular guns/jumping around the level like a madman.
-melee weapons can reflect projectiles, and can be used for one hit kills
-raiden from mortal kombat is a playable character
-adrenaline (powerup) system is easy to use
-40 maps
-fast paced action
-good graphics
-adjustable violence levels

CONS:
-2 player split screen max
-single player mode is not as strong as multiplayer. It's good practice against the bots, and it's fun enough so that when you have to earn things it's not boring, but i wouldn't get this game if you don't have xbox live or some friends
-no custom soundtrack

BOTTOM LINE:
Unless you are a friendless hermit, you can't go wrong with this game.

Xbox Live Review

Unreal Championship 2 is an awesome addition to the exceptional series. I was a huge fan of UC on Xbox. I bought UC 2 the first day it came out, and I've been hooked on Xbox Live ever since. At first when I heard that UC 2 was coming out, I noticed that Midway took over the franchise. I didn't know what to think about it at the time, but since Midway makes pretty solid games for the most part, I didn't hesitate picking it up.

When I first started playing it, it was a little bit different because of the third person melee moves. I'm really into first person shooters and third person hack & slash games, so I caught on really quick.

This game is definately worthwhile picking up if you're into those types of games.

*PROS*

-Awesome graphics

-Very solid new and classic weapons (other than the bio-rifle. they shouldn't of changed it from UC 1, but it's acceptable)

-Melee combat

-Many different adrenaline moves

-Many power ups (old & new)

-14 characters to choose from including Raiden

-Tight controls

-Huge level selection

-Many different gaming modes (i.e. deathmatch, capture the flag, team deathmatch, survival, etc.)

-Optional 1st & 3rd person view

-1st/3rd person shooter on crack

*CONS*

-Only two guns to a match (you pick your guns before the match & collect ammo

-No custom soundtrack

-PS2-like load times

-You have to unlock 7 characters in tedious 1 player missions

If you're into fast paced shooters and have Xbox Live...Unreal Championship 2 is a must! I'll put it this way...if I would of paid $100 for this game, I would have felt like it was money well spent. I've been playing games since the mid-80's, and there are probably less than 25 games that I can actually say that about (Halo 2 - one of the most overated games of all time, NOT being one of them).

I'm sure the Halo cult (you people know what I'm talking about =]) may disagree, but I think that UC 2 puts Halo 2 to shame!

For the record Halo 2 is an okay game...but EXTREMELY hyped up and overated!

UC2 is a very sophisticated shooter... what do i mean by sophisticated?

- balanced gameplay: this is THE FIRST shooter to incorporate melee combat in a way that you can actually beat a guy carrying a rocket launcher (or even a sniper rifle!) with your sword... u need to play it to believe it!!

- balanced weapons: ever tried using ure assault rifle against a shotgun/rocket launcher carrying player in halo2? its one sided and hopeless... not so in UC2. Every weapon is potent, though you might need to change your tactics to get the full mileage out of it...

- multiple characters - there are 3 categories of characters - high strength/low mobility, medium strength/medium mobility and low strength/high mob. The way you play the game will change based on the character you choose. You will need to adopt different tactics based on the strengths & weaknesses of the character...

- 3rd person to 1st person toggle - for one-on-one shooting match the 1st person view is better while for high mobility melee combat the 3rd person view is better - and you can switch on the fly...

perhaps the low ratings given by other reviewrs is because this game has a steeper learning curve than normal shooters... it takes time to explore the multitude of options available to you...plus tactics need to be changed based on the type of character/weapon/map you choose. The good thing about this is that the replayability of the game increases.

overall one of the best shooters for xbox....if you have any interest in tournament shooters - just buy UC2.

online is fun

First off, let me just say that the only reason I'm giving this game a 4 out of 5 is only because of the online portion of this game. The single player in this game sucks. I beat it in less than 5 hours. Online is a different story. It has a variety of different game modes, and it is just more fun to play people than the stupid computer. If you don't have xbox-live, then DON'T get this game. If you do, get it because you will have a lot of fun. Single Player= 2.5 because it has good graphics.

I wanted to like this....

but..nah. Well to be fair the game isn't that bad, it would be a really good game if the Story mode was more interesting and more fun, and not required to unlock the rest of the characters...and if 3rd person melee mode wasn't a requirement, but a choice...and if fatalities from mortal kombat weren't included (the hell?)

You know where I have the most fun? Doing things I did in the original Unreal Tournament. The deathmatches..capture the flag...etc. And I have to turn off some of the new features just to enjoy the game which leads me to think that too much new crap was added. It just seems over complicated, and seems not to know what kind of game it wants to be. Sometimes less is more.

I will say that the graphics and sound is superb, and you can indeed have a lot of fun with this playing against others. I would rent before buying.
