This game is the most messed up game in the world. My child got it and he is scarred to sleep now. I am a police officer and i work the night shift and he is scarrd for me to go to the jail. Supposedly the game takes place in jail. He cries every time i leave. This kid is 18 and he is on the varsity football team at school and now this game has turned him into a whiny boy. If i was you i would NOT allow my child to get this game because it is obviously terrifyin. I am goin to sue the game manufacture for making this here horrible game. You've Been WARNED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you like profanity or only like fighting two kinds of monsters then you'll love this game. Every other word is F-this or FN that. Boring Boring Boring. Save your money for Halo or Halo 2. Halo is worth every penny.

Very Mediocre

I bought a used copy of this game after it was touted by Game Informer as having one of the top ten scariest game moments. How can you go wrong with a horror game set in a prison?

Loveless execution, that's how. This game feels like a simple mod of a generic third-person shooter with some prison uniform skins slapped into place. The playability is uninteresting and loose -- the characters sort of slide across the ground while scissoring their legs instead of looking like they're actually making contact with the ground while running, and so on.

Torque's lack of reaction to anything around him consistently bothered me. An iron door would slam right behind him, or a guard would be torn in half immediately before him, and he would have NO REACTION AT ALL (in contrast, think about Resident Evil 4 -- Leon would crouch slightly in reaction to nearby explosions). This could probably be passed of as trying to cast Torque as stony and cold, but in reality I'm sure it was that the dev shop management didn't budget for those little extras that really breathe life into the game.

The attempted 'gritty' language is just egregious. Combined with the stupid AI, it leads to some real annoyances -- for example, I was following an NPC, and I stopped to look at something and apparently wasn't following quickly enough for his satisfaction. He starts hollering the same "come on, m*** f***r!" audio clip over and over at ten-second intervals, drawing my wife into the living room so she can scold me for the game's pointless, naughty language.

The fact that the game is older really isn't an excuse for its high degree of crappitude -- there are some truly hair-raising, beautifully crafted horror games that are 4+ years old -- Eternal Darkness and the 'Haunted Asylum/Orphanage' level in Thief: Deadly Shadows come to mind.

Life's just too short to play mediocre games. Stick with solid action games like RE4 or Riddick, or lovingly crafted horror titles like the ones mentioned above. Strongly suggest you skip this game.

Best Survival / Horror Game I've Seen In Quite A While

"The Suffering" - Now here's a game that came out last week (nearly under my radar) and I picked up on a whim the day after it was released. Very excited to play it after the helpful guy at the gamestop by my house filled my head with anticipation of the "creepiest" and/or "scariest" game I've ever played - and you know what, he might have been right.

Looking a lot like the "Silent Hill" games (but better) and playing a lot like the "Max Payne" games, this game truly is the scariest I've ever played. The visuals are shocking and timed perfectly. The sound really adds to the ambiance of the game and the foul language and graphic violence only adds to the realism. The storyline is good too as it keeps you wondering if "Torque" (the character whom you play) is really guilty of his accused crimes. But is it fun?

Damn straight it is. A lot of fun. The controls are pretty easy to pick up, the learning curve is maybe a half hour to get used to it, but vets of this type of game should have no problem at all. You never know when the next time is, the game will make you jump and what's around the next corner. The game is very dark so it will be hard to see things most times. (And sometimes you might think you saw something, but did you?) And let me tell you, it's a lot of fun to blast away at your enemies utilizing several common place weapons, such as: Tommy Gun, Twin Revolvers, Shotgun etc. Also, you have full use of grenades, Molotov Cocktails, etc. There's a lot of action to keep you from getting bored. Don't worry about that.

There is also some puzzle solving aspects of the game, but they are usually not to difficult and are easily figured out within a few minutes of logical thinking.

Now for a few minor downsides. The game is pretty short. You're looking at around 8 hours or so to beat it. (But there is some incentive for replay value since you can achieve 3 different endings) Also, there is not much variation to the creatures that you fight. There are only around 4 different variations of commonly seen creatures in the game. Could have used a bit more variety there.

In conclusion, this is a fun game that happens to be one of, if not, the, scariest game I've ever played. I highly recommend you pick it up, especially if you're a fan of the horror-genre.

I just played the demo on OXM and I will have to say this is one of the coolest, creepiest games I have ever played.

The demo starts with Torq being led into death row. There is a whole lot of "beeping" the dialog so I cant wait to get the real version to see what it says. The dialog seems to fit with the prison setting and is very well done.

Once in the prison all hell breaks loose, literally. All of these weird creatures start appearing, killing everything in sight. Its awesome!

I dont want to give too much away I am preordering this game right now

Turn the lights on...

I enjoy video games, and I certainly enjoyed this one. It's a regular shoot'em up MF. But, what makes it so different is the amazing creepiness, the music, the lighting, and the fact that you can walk through almost a whole level, and and not see a thing. The background sounds are spooky, the music swells and fades... then, BAM!!! A freaky beastie jumps out of a dark corner and I jump out of my seat.

My wife would watch this game over my shoulder and get just as freaked. It was like a good scary movie that you get to walk through.

The reason I didn't give it five stars is the linear plot/play line was a bit tedious. If it were more like GTA, where you could just explore the island, that would make this a really great game.

Perfect night of horror.......

I won't go into to much detail story-wise cause if your are here then you are probably aware of it anyway.

I have been a horror fan since birth and im now old enough to not disclose my age on here :P. I feel that i have seen and experienced it all in horror and my fasniation with supernatural horror is quite intense. In the gaming arena i have played ALL the survial horrors and have had obessions with a few of them, primarily Silent Hill 2 and 3.

For the past 14 months i have read and followed the on-going development of The Suffering and went in expecting a great deal. I mean earth shattering horror that would effect me not just WOW that looks cool factor. I wanted a real feeling of un-ease and terror when i played a horror game and to date Silent Hill 3 was the closest i have had to this experience.

I love horror, both movies and games and i love it for the feelings of terror that sweep my body during an intense scene or moment in dialogue, i love vampires, ghost, aliens, serial killers, zombies(...), the whole lots. I watch it for sheer gore and blood and lots of it.

And im happy to say The Suffering quenched my thirst for a true horror experience that i ave soaked up for years.

The game is truely interactive and plays with a lot of in-game moments that are scripted. This is to provide both storyline and a visual terror while you actually play and though other games like Max Payne have utilsed this tool in a crime setting The Suffering uses the technigues to great effect. I mean ripped in half guards crawling along the floor gasping there last moments while there intestines follow like fresh spagetti and this isn't a cut scene...BRILLIANT !!!

As mentioned in other reviews the sound is crucial to the feelings experienced in the game and Midway have provided a flawless soundtrack that really penetrates your psyche on a level i haven't experienced from sound before. A simple example is this: you walk into a dark room and here a low deep growl, suddnely you here the BREAK OF GLASS and some unidentifiable creature with blades for hands hits the ground and screams at your, u defeat it and then turn to exit the room, then ANOTHER BREAK OF GLASS, you turn quickly ready to fight, AND(...).. nothing.....you search the room , your un ease slowly begins to build. Simple techingue but effective !!!

You can hear everything: your footsteps, breathing, heart, watter dripping, the sound of crys and screams around the corners, growls, blood spraying.

Deftinely, without question play this game in 1st person, it is the only way one should play this game to really allow yourself to feel the game. It is a good looking game and the graphics are certainly the best that can be churned out at the moment.

The game is a FPS with a few easy riddles, this isnt so much a challenging stratgic game like say Resident Evil. Its a game that allows you to play and enjoy without getting too frustrated and giving up a quater way through to never get around too again. You will want to play this for as long as possible and though short it provides a quality night in that will be well worth spent for horror fans. Though short its a game that you will play again especailly on a stormy night when yah got nuthin too do.

What i also appreciate about the game play is the modes of difficulity. It a game a novice or an expert shooter can play thanks to the actual working difficult level. I have played on all levels and found the difficulty steep to be well thought out. The easiest level will allow a novive or casual gamer to enjoy the experience without getting frustrated or bored. The experience of having to die all the time and attempt to get through a moment again and again,(well not much on this level) is not experienced . Its like a interactive movie on easy that will still immerse and scare the (...) out of the player. The hardest level is excately that and plays like a hard thump to the chest cavity, the knife penetrating yah heart. Furthermore, yah got 3 excellent endings to achieve.

So, if yah like horror and want a experience that will soak yah with sweat buy this. Deftinely not for young children to see due to the actual pyscological impact this delievers. Remember, this isnt a game your just play, its a game you experience emotionally too. Children won't handle some of the impact. It really is a mature gamers game and thus we should respect that. I think most teeenagers would handle the game well and some might even see it as weak, those jadded gamers :). But adult gamers will love this. As of May 2004 i would say this and Silent Hill 3 are the best horror games in the gaming market and i would also say that this game personally takes my number one because i just happen to love the FPS element added to this game more instead of the SURVIVAL elements of Silent Hill 3 or other horror games. Hey i like to shoot things :(

I believe if yah like the sound of the game you should buy it not rent it cause it a worthy entry to yah collection and a good game to show of to friends and is one you will play again.

Besides i think if yah love these sort of games you should buy them so that more quality horror titles are developed. Its worth the money on this title to just take the risk. Rent it if you are not sure but you will just want to buy it anyways :).

(I took one point of because i had a few freeze problems with my disc but that may be my xbox and not the disc.)

Good Game, but Trouble in One Part

I have made through most of the game and what I've seen is that is it's a great action packed ride. The sound is excellent, the graphics are pretty good, and the controls are easy to get used to. However, there are parts in the game where you might get confused on where to go or what to do and it becomes frustrating. I've made to the last level and I'm at the part where you come to a truck and then it catches fire and Infernas start attacking you. There's a gap in the road up ahead. You can walk on to a small hill to collect some ammo and other equipment. I've tried looking around for something to push or use but there isn't anything. A friend told me that a bus is supposed to come and crash so I can get across. He told me to walk up to the gap in the road after the truck is on fire. I keep doing that but the bus doesn't come and the Infernas keep coming and I keep getting killed. If someone could tell me how to beat this part I would appreciate it. Now as for the game itself, it is a pretty cool game that you could playing on a rainy day or late at night with the lights off. It's just frustrating that I'm so close to the end but I'm stuck at this one part. So anyone who has beaten the game, please let me know how to beat it, because if you do and if you need trouble in another game, I'll help you out in return. This game is not really for kids because of all the violence and language, but if you can get beyond that, it's all good.

An interesting and disturbing game

Decent graphics, decent sound, decent game. Very twisted and much better than silent hill games. I would still wait for it to come down a little in price as it doesn't have much replay value.

Action Horror - A Welcome Change of Pace from Survival

The Suffering, from Midway games, was a pleasant surprise early this year. It is a horror game with an emphasis on action over survival and puzzle solving, which should please gamers like myself, who often can't find the patience for Resident Evil or Silent Hill games.
The action takes place from either a third or first-person perspective, and allows you to switch instantly between the two with the touch of a button. And while there are a few genuinely creepy moments, the action almost never lets up.
There aren't a great variety of enemy creatures, butthe ones that are there sport some awesome character models, and have pretty cool backstories. As for weapons, you'll find a handful of melee weapons and firearms to blast away the swarming creatures.
Medicine functions as health, just like Max Payne, which works well, because you can save it for when you are desperate and then replenish your health with a single button press.
The graphics are impressive with little touches, like your charcater's shirt gardually becoming soaked with blood as you fight through each level.
Puzzles are simple and easy, not overly complicated like in some survival horror games, so the action will keep coming.
The game is extremely violent, but is worth checking out. I just recommend renting first; it is not very long, and can easily be beaten over the course of a five-night rental.
