Scary as HELL!!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 4 / 6

I just finished the demo and all I can say is if you like scary games, this game is for you. It's an easy game to pick up and play and it is completely random (not like the radio in Silent Hill 2 that got old after a while, the demo freaked me out!) It's gory, scary, and fun to play. I'm buying it once it comes out!!

Great Expectations

Tho this game won't be released for another three weeks, I have great expectations for it. Surreal has hoovered a couple thousand gameplay hours from me with Drakan: Order of the Flame, Drakan: The Ancient's Gate (BEST PS2 GAME EVER!!), and their unfairly underrated Lord of the Rings 'Fellowship of the Ring'. The screenshots for the Suffering show awesome promise, as does the premise of the game. It will be SCARY! I look forward to much integrity, detail, frightful level bosses, thought provoking storyline, and sphincter-tightening gore! The storyline will have several possible endings, so replay value should be high. I WILL buy this game!

Demo is great cant wait util this game comes out!

I just played the demo on OXM and I will have to say this is one of the coolest, creepiest games I have ever played.

The demo starts with Torq being led into death row. There is a whole lot of "beeping" the dialog so I cant wait to get the real version to see what it says. The dialog seems to fit with the prison setting and is very well done.

Once in the prison all hell breaks loose, literally. All of these weird creatures start appearing, killing everything in sight. Its awesome!

I dont want to give too much away I am preordering this game right now

WOW!!!! I knew this game would be freaky, but I didn't think it would be an altogether true horror story. You are Torque, a badass with extensive knowledge of firearms who has been sent away to Abbott Maryland State Penitentiary for the murder of your wife and two sons. Not only can you reload two revolvers in a minute but you have the ability to transform into a monster (think Mr. Hyde with blades for hands).
Anyways, the prison has been overrun by mysterious monsters of science who are out to kill anything that comes in their path .... namely YOU as well as surviving prison guards and inmates. Throughout the game you get to choose between killing innocents or assisting them. Also, THE BEST feature to this game has got to be the enthralling movie-like plot that carries you throughout the entire game! There are occassional flashbacks and mirages that keep you guessing and spooked the entire game!
One attack scene caught me so off guard that I literally jumped (which NEVER happens; especially during a video game)!
The storyline is intriguing and a bit grotesque (not for the faint of heart since there are decapitated bodies and blood all over the place), which draws the gamer's attention more and more as they play it. If you are a horror/thriller fan and play this game for just a few minutes, you're likely to get addicted!
The controls are a bit tricky at first but you easily adapt to them the more you play it. The sound is amazing! You hear every little noise and move that you and other characters make; you even hearing your breathing and footsteps on the floors. This game proves that being alone in the quiet dark can get your heart pumping. Final thought on this game: this is a definite buy! Plus, DON'T PLAY THIS IN THE DARK!!!! Chances are you'll start to get freaked out!!!!

The Most Imaginative And Engrossing Game Since Max Payne

I buy a lot of video games, sometime too many for my own good. More often than not, I play through enough before it either collects dust forever or it gets traded in for credit towards a new game. Sometimes, when I finally do beat a game, the overall thrill I initally experienced just failed to transcend the entire game and upon completion, I knew I'd never play it again. The Suffering fails to meet the criteria in both categories. From the outset, the game pulls you in head first for a ride that ultimately is a mystery until the very end.

It starts out with you as Torque, a hardened criminal with zero emotional output. You are being lead off to your maximum security prison cell in the worst prison in America. Almost immediately upon arrival, strange phenoms start to become very real. In the blink of an eye, hideous creatures being spewing from every orifice in the building like a swarm of rats. Lights shatter. Guards get mauled. Prisoners are chopped in half. The entire system goes awry. You; as Torque, are basically free to battle the evil within the prison and ultimately, within yourself.

The Suffering plays very similarly to Max Payne. It is a third-person action game that is propelled like a first-person shooter. The scenery is obviously different; though no less gritty, but the controls are smooth and easy to learn like Max Payne. There are enough similarites to many other action titles with it's constant build-up to something and it's bevy of puzzle-solving. The Suffering sets itself apart with it's sounds. If you have even a decent stereo TV with left and right speakers, you can feel the intensity through the smattering of creaks and distant screams. The atmosphere pulls you in and occasionally catches you napping, resulting in you jumping out of your seat in the broadest of daylights.

One of my favorite aspects of the game is the creature design. Rather than take the Resident Evil route, the designers incorporated more of a Silent Hill feel to the monster designs so rather than campiness, you get a more gruesome being to contend with. Each creature represents different methods of capital punishment and each have their own methods of being dealt with so you can't exactly go blasting your way through the entire game. Also, the new creatures get introduced at a slower pace than in other survival horror games. It is in this manner that the game lures you in as if to get you comfortable with what you've experienced, only to throw something at you when you least expect it.

The end is a mystery because despite getting used to battling the variety of creatures, you aren't even slightly tipped off as to which of the three endings you will get. The end boss was very intimidating and took some experimenting with to figure out the best way to defeat it but rest assured, it can be done. Without ruining the ending (which would be impossible without getting all 3 endings), I am willing to bet that there is no easy-to swallow "happy ending". Nothing is resolved which leaves things wide open for a sequel. Rounding off the entire package is a cool "Making Of" feature, a featurette on a haunted prison in Pennsylvania and a trailer for Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy (another super great Midway game). Midway seems to be going out of their way to create new content and give the consumer more than they asked for and as a result, they are making better games. If you are looking for a game that isn't stingy on the atmosphere or the gameplay, you can't go wrong with The Suffering.

Not really scary, but still pretty fun

Good atmosphere and game design make this better than average. I wouldn't say that I was ever really scared by it, but then it is just a game. There is an interesting collection of enemies and some decent, but basic, weapons. The story itself has some thought put into it and although it uses checkpoints, it also allows you to save whenever you want.

Awesome!!!

This game is awesome!! I couldn't buy it at the time but I went and rented it for a week. I never wanted to put down the controller. You never know what's going to be around the next turn. The monsters in the game are unbelievable. Whoever came up with them has a wild imagination. If you tend to get bored with games fast get this game because it will change that. I hope that this game comes out with a sequel because I will be sure to buy it too.

An Awesome Under-Appreciated Game

Once I picked up this little 'gem', I couldn't put it down, even though I was playing Riddick and KOTOR at the same time. I loved pretty much everything about this game. It was fun, well executed, with good level design, an interesting story and loads of fun. It even had some fun extras, like a documentary about ghostly prisons. It's more than your average day FPS. I was able to play through the game in just a few days, but I spent quite a few hours on it daily. Yes, I have no life right now.

The game has three endings depending on how well you 'behave' when you encounter other NPC's. Help them, ignore them or kill them.

The difficulty is adjustable and on normal, it was just a blast to play through. You have the usual array of weapons and once in a while you even get to use a mounted machine gun, which is quite useful in those areas, when the enemies just swarm at you for cannon fodder. The enemies/monsters are fun, based on the method of their execution. They could have been a bit more varied, but overall it doesn't matter. In some areas they respawn, while in other you can just clean up and have some peace.

I didn't think it was overly gory, though there is a bit of red around and there is quite a bit of 'adult' language, if you want to call it that. The voice acting is ok, with only a couple of weirdos thrown in. (That green gas thing is a bit annoying and one of the initial prisoners is too, though luckily he doesn't last very long). I wish the game would have been a bit longer, but that just tells me I had a lot of fun with it.

It has good level design, you usually know where you need to go, though there is some room for roaming. There is not much backtracking, which is nice. You can switch from 3rd to 1st person view and each is useful in certain situations. Some parts of the game is genuinly creepy and surprised even me occasionally and I normally don't jump for anything. I had some issues loading the game sometimes, but maybe that was my XBox in need of cleaning.

Bottom line: Play this game, you can't go wrong if you like the genre.

Finally A Game That Gets (Almost) Everything Right

I wasn't expecting a whole lot from this game when I picked it up used. I was very pleasantly surprised by it. There is no single overwhelmingly awesome feature here - storyline is strong, voice work solid, graphics reasonable, control scheme perfectly fine. But this game is truly greater than the sum of its parts, and it rises to that blissful state where it all comes together and you experience "great gameplay". I really had a blast playing through this. I found the "easy" setting to be TOO easy. "Normal" was still relatively easy, so veteran gamers may want to go with a higher difficulty level. All in all this was going to be one of my best gaming experiences ever... Unfortunately the final boss battle sucked. The first two "bosses" were effectively done in terms of storyline twists as well as difficulty. But the very last boss had nothing to do with the story and was just unneccessarily and annoyingly difficult. This left me with a bad taste after what had been a stellar game. Better luck next time (Suffering 2 comes out this fall, I hear).

The Suffering is violent as hell and I never heard so much bad language in a video game. It's not for kids. However, it's the best video game I have ever played. I just bought it today and am still very early in the action. Graphics and sound are simply suberb. The story is incredibly involving. This is a very unique, special game. Until you start playing it, you won't know how truly awesome a video game can be. I recently finished Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time on Xbox, and I thought, at the time, that was one of the best games I ever played. It still is, but The Suffering I think has a chance to go down as the best game ever. Accolades to the crew at Midway for dreaming up this cruel, clever classic. It may become the Citizen Kane of video games. The time, precision, craftsmanship and desire to make something stand out that went into this creation really, truly deserves a standing ovation from adult video game-lovers across the world.
