I'm wondering if the people who write these customer reviews work for the manufacturers - this game freakin sucks big time. The graphics are nothing special and the control is totally lacking. I can't tell if I'm standing or crouching, I'm bored after about ten minutes. you also can't switch between 1st and 3rd person view.
total waste of money, had to give it away after a day.
DON'T BUY IT!

Save your money! After reading these reviews I bought Vietcong. I was excited to play it untill I actually started playing. This game sucks, the levels are crap and the multiplayer isn't that good. If you want a good game buy Counter-Strike. The multiplayer in counter strike is way, way, way better. I don't know what the other reviewers were talking about, this game sucks. You have been warned.

Unfortunately, I can not share the enthusiasm of my fellow reviewers.
The game has a lot of good sides. The graphics are beautiful. Asides from the character interaction with the plants (brushing up to plants or pushing them out of the way), this game features some of the best plant, jungle, and mountain settings I've ever seen in a game. Mission design is also OK, although not great.
THIS GAME HAS ONE BIG PROBLEM THOUGH: Gameplay! I do not consider myself the world's best FPS player, but I also ain't the worst. Normally, I play FPS games on the hardest possible setting. This one, I played on "hard", which is the second hardest setting. And still, I was so frustrated by this game that I decided not to finish it half way through (which is a first for me).
I mean, don't get me wrong: I like that there finally is an FPS game where it is not unrealistically easy for the player to kill the enemy and where the enemy doesn't have an unrealistically hard time to kill the player. But in this game, things are outrageous! It is almost impossible to kill with one shot, while the enemy seems to be able to do that all the time!
To give you an idea of what I am talking about: I am in a scene where I need to enter a tunnel. I have a machine gun, and I already know that there are several vietcong just beyond the tunnel entrance. So I beging to lay down fire, and empty the whole magazine on the 4 of them. And guess what: At least 2 of them survive entirely unharmed every time! And not just that! But they turn against me, run towards me (while I am still firing), pull up their guns to aim (I am still firing), and kill me with a single shot!
After a number of attempts, I finally make it into the tunnel, clear out everything that is in there, and pick up a semi-stationary machine gun. Since I have played through the scene several times already, I know that more VCs will be waiting for me at the tunnel entrance. So I position myself close to the entrance and ready my stationary MG. I hear them talking and come closer, so I begin to fire. The 3 of them run into my fire. I hit them with all head and body shots. A whole amo belt worth of heavy fire. Yet not a single one of them goes down! Instead, one of them raises his gun and kills me with a single shot! And I am even in a prone position and mostly taking cover around the bend of a tunnel!
Give me a break! Vietnam certainly was tough, but I refuse to believe that a VC walks away entirely unharmed after taking 50 or more bullets to the head!
Oh, and what makes things worse is the save-game system, which only allows a small number of saves (around 4, typically) in each level. So you will play through the same stupid situations over and over again.
Also, the team mates are just plain dumb. They are OK when it comes to fighting the VC, but they move around like complete retards. In a game that features a lot of tunnel-fighting, it just isn't OK that your team mates block you from moving back or forth. This happened to me a number of times. All you can do is go back to the previous save-game. Argh!
Thanks, but no thanks! This could have been one awesome game. Technically, it certainly is. But play-balance-wise, someone took a lot of shortcuts. A bit more testing and fine-tuning would have turned this into a 4 or 5 star game. I play a lot of FPS games, and gameplay-wise, this one comes in dead-last!
Not as good as it was hyped to be

Iam not a very good reviewer of games but as a person who is very familier with the special forces in vietnam i must say this game is not as good as it could have been..
This game lacks many things that should have and would have been very easy to add into the game..
ok where do i start. WEAPONS.
The game does not get the weapons right.. ok sure it got the m16a1, ak 47, and m60. but what about the most popular used SF weapon around in NAM, the CAR-15 (aka xm177 and colt commando). anybody who knows SF in Nam would know that 80 percent of a team would be carrying them..
also forgot to include more popular weopns like, m72 law, m14, what about the m40a1??????? that was more popular than the garand..
what about the door guns??????? browning 50 cal????? SF teams would never have that..
1. way to heavy!
2. wouldnt need that much fire support on there LZ (because SF LZs where rarely every 'hot'.
They couldnt even get the door guns right..THEY HAD M60 DOOR GUNS PEOPLE!!i wonder if they even did much research???
But there are a few positive things about the game. such as the uniforms, landsacape (in some missions) and gameplay is ok..
cmon guys you could have done better.. u know it..

Minimum specs requirements NOT accurate

Forget running this on anything near the minimum requirements as listed on the box. I had this running on an XP system, 1500 mhz with a 32 meg graphics card and it STINKS. 64 meg would appear to be the minimum graphics card. Otherwise it's jerky movement and LOTS of slowdown. Consoles with FAR less CPU strength run better looking games than this. What a let down.
not what i expected

for the last month and a half i have visited the vietcong website and i couldnt wait for it to come out. i ordered it 3 days before it came out. when i got it i opened it and it wouldnt load. this pissed me off enough. when i got my new copy i played it for 3 hours straight. it was kinda boring. i got to the tunnel rat level and that was so damn annoying i stoped playing. who the hell wants to walk around in tunnels for half and hour with no where to go and no one to really shoot. after beating this level i was pissed enough. i beat the entire game in 4 days and i was in school for most of the day. the game was too short and it was kind of pointless missions. i only replayed a few levels and these were no longer fun. this game is now collecting dust in my desk.
sound
-my 6 month old computer made the sound the best it could be and this was still not $50 worth
graphics
-only real good thing in the game. yes it had a few bad images but its the jungle, complicated cant rat ont them for that
guns
-who buys games for the guns, otherwise not too bad
gameplay
-kinda boring, too much walking, not enough fighting
my only advice is dont buy this game unless it is 15 bucks or something.
Nothing revolutionary

I buy tons of fps games. This one is a little different in that it really includes you as part of the game - more of a plot than most. Graphics are fast, but the world is a little screwy somtimes - not much freedom as it directs you exactly where you're supposed to go, and sometimes there are really annoying flaws - like when you crouch go prone behind a rock, it puts the camera view inside the rock - you can see under the enemies feet, and when you shoot tour rounds don't hit anything. Also - when moving around in prone position and you go to crawl over a rock or something, the camera will get pointed at the sky or something and won't allow you to keep focused in the direction you're trying to see. Pretty hoaky. Needs a patch or two. The sound is cool though.
Nice graphic but somthing doesn't make sense

Overall Vietcong is a good FPS game. The graphic is nice and pretty. I am using Geforce2 GTS 64MB and keep the setting at 1024X768 32 bit and 85 hz. The graphic is too good to describe. Smooth action and cool story. "BUT" something are too stupid and doesn't make any sense. You need to pound at least 10 shot on a Vietcong's head to kill him. It is no way to make one shot one kill. This is impossible. Remember, they can kill you with only one clear shot. What is that? Is this the way make the game harder to play? One more thing. You don't have a flashlight to use in the dark tunnel. You only can light up the neon light and drop on the ground to light up the dark tunnel. After you passed the point, it will be totally dark again. You won't see anything except your cross-hair point. It is stupid. You have to walk in a totally dark tunnel without knowing your direction. It is too frustrated to play that way. At least a flashlight is better. I don't think the real soldier will walk in the dark tunnel without a flashlight. I finished all level and mission in few days and decided to sell the game. Because it is no reason need to play the second time.
Really ugly, but unique and good

One thing about first person shooters nowadays is that so many of them seem the same. That's why Vietcong is somewhat refreshing, since it is kind of different. The game really makes a bad first impression on you with its ugly graphics and unorthodox gameplay. Vietcong isn't a stealth game. It's not a pure action game either. The squad-based elements are too simple to call it a tactical shooter. It's unique one its own, and it's very good. Best of all, it feels authentic, and for a war as unique as Vietnam, that's saying a lot.
What this game suceeds at is effectively capturing the elements that made Vietnam different from wars such as World War 2. Engagements take place quickly in tension-filled jungles between your small squad and small groups of four or five VC. A helicopter often brings you into the mission and then picks you up at the end. Occasionally, you can radio a firebase for support and then a few seconds later, hell in the form of artillery shells will come raining down on the area that you specify and obliterate anybody in it. Using artillery is a fun mechanic and it's too bad that it only comes up a few times in the game. Vietcong checkpoint saves your game, but it also gives you a limited amount of quick saves per level. This save system is perfect. It keeps the game suspenseful almost all the time, without making it frustrating. The gameplay also relies on good AI instead of heavy scripting for the firefights, and that's another big plus.
The dialog, sounds, and overall feel of the gameplay give the game a feel that resembles what you read about or what you see in old news tapes. You creep slowly through the terrain, following your point man, and then find some cover when you engage some VC. your enemies, as well as your squadmates, are highly lethal and very effective at using cover. It takes maybe three or four bullets to kill you in this game, which means that you have to advance very slowly and carefully. The hardest part about firefights often isn't shooting the enemy, but just finding where he is hiding. Sometimes, all that you see is a tracer or two, or maybe a muzzle flash along with the sound of bullets whizzing past your head. These cat-and-mouse type firefights usually last less than a minute, but they can be very exciting. I have not played a first person shooter that resembles this, except for maybe Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault.
The only fault that I had with the gameplay was that the game occasionally deviates from the squad-based formula and sticks you in some solo tasks. These tasks frequently involve spelunking through maze-like VC tunnels, fighting one or two enemies at a time in a very boring manner. There is one absolute marathon mission in the game where you explore a seemingly endless maze of VC tunnels. It's not frustrating as much as it is really boring. Hopefully, this wasn't in the expansion pack.
The game's audio is competent without being outstanding. The voice acting is a mixed bag. The main character is pretty weak, but some of your squadmates are good. The radio chatter that you listen to is pretty good. The weapons are kind of average sounding, and none of them sound very powerful. The soundtrack is very good, and does a good job of matching the era.
As I said previously, the graphics for this game are pretty bad. All of the character models are blocky and low-detailed. The same goes for the environments, which are drab and very unconvincing. Instead of the feel that you are fighting through jungles, it feels like you are fighting through valleys full of boxes that have crude leaves painted on them. The environments and objects are all very repetitive, which is expected for a game like this, but it's magnified even more by the fact that it looks so outdated.
Vietcong has a pretty good length to it. It took me just under 15 hours or so to finish it. It has a lot going for it, but the underwhelming presentation is a disappointment. This game isn't going to change your life, but it is something good if you're bored with first person shooters. Check it out and see if you like it.
