I enjoyed this game. Some missions were frustrating, but not half as much as some reviewers say-the tunnel missions in particular are not too long.
Some missions like defending the base from attackers are great fun, and while some characters are over the top the game manages to keep you going on for more. It is not too long either, a plus in my book.
Purple Haze has both Vietcong and First Alpha!

Don't make the same mistake I did, I bought the original Vietcong then bought Purple Haze. Purple Haze has both the original Vietcong and the mission pac Fist Alpha. I thought PH was an expansion along with FA. You can buy PH for only $13 on amazon. I wound up spending $29 for Vietcong then another $29 for PH costing over $60 for something I could have gotten for only $13!!!!

FPS & Single-Player-Fan Fun.
I'm a fan of single-player action. There's just enough story line in VIETCONG to tie the mission concepts together. Some maps have better grapics, textures, etc., than others, but the atmosphere truly prevails throughout. Although I've mentioned [story line], self preservation and survival are key. Haulin'-a**, and outdoor firefights in some, and duck-n-cover or s00pa'-d00pa'-stealth in others.
Yes, there ARE some 'glitchy' moments and a possible bug here and there that could be worked out, but the overall enjoyment of the game allows one to look past it for the other 90% of the game the developers got right... very right!
Do you want to step back to one of those classic vietnam flix' you had to see three or four times just for the atmosphere... and this time, Get Involved in the Action??!
Return to Castle Wolfenstein will will always be the classic hit in this genre' for me; take away the sci-fi monsters, amp-up the graphics engine, and Return To Vietcong! If the (minor) flaws got a patch here n' there, this game would rate TOP shelf with any FPS strategy game.
UP SIDE:
*Visual environments follow the 'story'. Moments of stealthy night-time prone crawling missions through the jungle rough with a silenced pistol and creepy cricket-speckeled quiet wading in the swamp with an occasional blast from an M-1 to pick-off a VC laying in wait with an AK47... to all-out multi platoon fire fights defending bases on either side of the barbed wired trenches.
*WEAPONS! If you've ever fired a rifle, you'll appreciate the realistic recoil, magazine count, reload times, variation of accuracy, sound, and velocity to the weapon you choose; THIS is where this game RAWX ALL OUT! No futuristic ray guns and blasters here! This iZZ oLd-sKooL GrEaSe-gUnn, M1, MP40 ThoMpsON-tYme!! ...Did I mention a KiKiNN videoversion of an M-16?!
*Characters are great! The conversations, quips, and back talk of your fellow troops was FAR better than I expected. After the first few missions, you may BELIEVE the personallities of the way-gone-cats! Totally complimentary to the fun.
*The audio tracks RULE. Period. The throw-back sounds of great late-60's rock (placed appropriately), certainly adds a special edge to help set the mood. Great MuZe!
DOWN SIDE:
*Friendly "AI" has a few issues in SOME places. If you get the 'gist of how to "follow" your point-man, instead of leading the pace as a sole-player, the game works better, and your buddies respond with little (or no) interference to the mission maps. The "personality" of these characters makes up for it! (As well; you NEED these cats for your ammo & health.)
*Continuity of textures/graphic quality. This is no DOOM3 when it come to graphics, but it's great. Some locations are peppered with foliage (necessary to environments) that lack the 'realism' which other parts of the game don't have a problem with. Still good... It's JUST A GAME, and it seems too much bump mapping & texture detail may have interfered with game play (or clipping) while crawling through the jungle. [This] does NOT take away from the ATMOSPHERE that makes the game fun.
The slowest PC I ran it on was a P4-2.53ghz w/a Radeon-9000. Anything P4 with a vid-card close to this (and above) should eat it right up, no prob'. If you're looking for that single-player mode that can really capture the imagination, you're there.

Forget running this on anything near the minimum requirements as listed on the box. I had this running on an XP system, 1500 mhz with a 32 meg graphics card and it STINKS. 64 meg would appear to be the minimum graphics card. Otherwise it's jerky movement and LOTS of slowdown. Consoles with FAR less CPU strength run better looking games than this. What a let down.
waste of money - don't listen to the other reviews

I'm wondering if the people who write these customer reviews work for the manufacturers - this game freakin sucks big time. The graphics are nothing special and the control is totally lacking. I can't tell if I'm standing or crouching, I'm bored after about ten minutes. you also can't switch between 1st and 3rd person view.
total waste of money, had to give it away after a day.

In short buy this game and buy it now, get a DSL connection and go play online.
The SP is very good but i only played that 4 months after buying the game, i bought this for rumbles in the jungle with real people no pc AI.
This is THE best MP game out at the moment. It has the *MAGIC* forumla that no matter how many times you play you just have to come back for more. Ok people argue "its got iron sights and its far too hard" then practice practice practice. It took me a while (a week ish) until i got the "ah i get it" spark and since then i have been hooked.
Note* practice on none VC mode servers(with cross hair) to start with, practice with each gun and each class then go back and practice some more. But dont blame me if this eats up 20hrs a week of your time.
There are only about 10 maps at moment(tho there the best designed ones ive seen) but there is a beta map editor out and maps from this will work with the 1.4 patch which is out v soon, the expantions due in Jan with even more guns and maps.Oh join a clan as clan games are the dogs dangleys.
Its sad to hear the US have not given this game the credit it deserves. Anyone who disagrees has simply not given enough time to the game, the more you put in the more rewards you reap. This is no run-gun-die game, it needs inteligence, stealth, cunning.Stream with 50 people needs to be experienced by all.
This makes Halo look and play like the original Doom.

DON'T BUY IT!

Save your money! After reading these reviews I bought Vietcong. I was excited to play it untill I actually started playing. This game sucks, the levels are crap and the multiplayer isn't that good. If you want a good game buy Counter-Strike. The multiplayer in counter strike is way, way, way better. I don't know what the other reviewers were talking about, this game sucks. You have been warned.
Best Vietman game out, right now. IMHO.

No you can't drive a tank or drop napalm on somebody, but Vietman was best remembered as a jungle war. And there's plenty of jungle in Vietcong.
This game is best when played online, with lots of cover, several different kinds of weapons, and many different types of games (DM, TDM, CTF, etc.) and maps. Single play, for both, are challenging, especially on vietnam difficulty (no HUD). Do a search and try out the demo. The demo and retail multiplayer servers are compatible with each other but demo has more restrictions on class and maps.

vietcong is probably the best vietnam game ever created and one of the best war games ever also. Players have a variety of weapons to choice from such as the m-16a1, ak-47, mosin-nagant, m1 carbine, and m-60 just to name a few. The levels are fun, as most of them often occured during the vietnam conflict. The first level, for example, has you set out with two other squad mates to help out a local village (this was often done by green beret in order to win over the local population.) Probably my favorite level though is Radio Station. It has you guarding a remote radio tower during a monsoon. The radio tower is pivotal, as it is the only thing able to recieve and transmit radio transmissions from green beret operation in cambodia (we weren't supposed to be there.) well, sure enough, the NVA dont like this very much. The quiet breaks, and you can hear about 50 NVA officers blowing whistles. needless to say, the bodycount in this mission is rambo-like.
Pros:
Awesome vietnam game!
-you actually have to use weapons' iron sights to shoot accurately
-good controls
-graphics
-the use of cover is emphasized greatly!
-weapon accuracy
-missions
-multiplayer
-something cool:when using the microphone online, you have to yell if someone is more than 30 feet away. and the enemy can hear it!!
-OVERALL GREAT GAME!!!
Cons:
-the tunnel missions
-collecting intel seems to have no use (ae you dont gain anything from taking intelligence papers.)
-the m-16 has 18 rounds?
-can only drive a jeep
-game does not include the m-14(expansion fist alpha does)
-your squad could be better
-more character developement from squadmates (friendship)
- overall i would suggest this to anyone who is seeking a good first person shooter. the game is great on easy but very realistic and fun on vietnam (1 shot 1 kill, including you, dont know how much ammo you have.)
Don't waste your money
