Oddworld Inhabitants-Pure Genius

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 3 / 4

The first thing you notice when this game begins are the incredible graphics. They profoundly showcase the capabilities of the XBOX. no matter how chaotic the screen becomes, frame rates never miss a beat. The draw distances are also incredible. Bushes and shrubs are visable form across a lake or valley. This western themed universe is supremely well pulled off with the efforts of artistically talented Lorne Lanning and crew. At times I explored and hiked around simply for the sake of seeing the world.
The sound is just as good as the graphics. Dolby surround compliments the graphics dynamically. Sound effects are crisp and clear. The ambient sounds of the environments are aslo very well done, from lapping river currents to snapping machine gun fire. Voiceovers are fun and nicely performed, though at times it can be difficult to understand Stranger.
Stranger's wrath uses some well implemented tools to keep the game interesting. The game functions as a normal FPS and seamlessly switches to third person at the touch of a button allowing the player to run and fight hand to hand. During First person, Stranger uses a double barrel crossbow which fires live creatures that you must often catch to use. This feature is novel and allows a huge deal of replay value as you find different combos to better bounty your prey.
Stranger's job through most of the game will be to bounty outlaws. Obviously you'll be paid more to bring them in alive than dead. Bringing a boss in alive is a test in patience and at some points seems almost impossible. However, due to character development, Stranger will not bounty hunt the entire game. His chracter becomes more and more interesting and in Oddworld fashion, he is charged with the task of saving the world.
If this is what Oddworld Inhabitants can do now, future projects will be highly anticipated.
Pros:
Great graphics and sound, very high replay, excellent character development and novel approach to "live ammo"
Cons:
Can seem linear, very hard to bounty bosses alive

Oddworld Stranger's Wrath is an excellent game. The graphics are stunning and look more like a movie than a game. To say the storyline is odd is an understatement but it's odd in a good way. Controls are easy to use and you switch from third person to first person flawlessly during a battle. Voice acting is exceptional and can be quite entertaining, especially when your ammo starts insulting you. Pick it up as at least a rental, it's worth it.

As it stars you're just a bounty hunter with the most wicked weapons, then the story of who you really are slowly gets revealed to you. It's amazing. And there are some levels that will suprise you with difficulty.

doesn't work on XBOX 360

I have been into oddWorld since the PS1. I loved the goofy play and... blah blah blah... everything everyone else says like this is absolutely true. I went out and bought the PS2 purely in anticipation of the new oddWorld games only to be left behind by the XBOX only switch-over (they even ran some demos of how it was going on the PS2 so that completely shocked me!)I was bummed beyond belief.

Here we are years later and I have bent to the prowes of the XBOX 360. I own one now and have no regrets. I felt bad leaving the PlayStation line behind but the majority of the games I like are made for both platforms and I was thinking I was about to be able to get back into the OddWorld adventures! What more could I want. It was surely time to invest and leave behind my very costly PS3 hopes and dreams. I even found a good place (amazon) to buy the 2 XBOX OddWorld titles at a good price. I ordered them up and read on about how there will not be any more games in the oddWorld series, which made me feel sad but glad I went ahead and invested in the XBOX 360. At least I can play all of the games and enjoy them for years to come. But.... then it happened.

A day before the timely shipment from Amazon arrived I bumped into this one review that stated that not all XBOX games run on the XBOX 360. Hmmm? Why should that be? And what about the OddWorld games? To my disapointment, neither of the OddWorld XBOX games are compatible with the XBOX 360.

So I have gone from investing in the PS2 - being left behind, then years later investing in the XBOX 360 - left behind again.

I love OddWorld. Don't get me wrong. But have you ever had a friend you thought was so cool and fun and hilarious and you love to be around that friend and never have a bad time with them when they are around.... but they are completely undependable and never around? That is my sad relationship to OddWorld.

The crazy thing is that on the XBOX 360 web site, you can see they are creating these "patches" that emulate the XBOX on the XBOX 360 so that certain XBOX games will in fact run on the XBOX 360. The OddWorld games were on that list but... now gone. I wish we could start a campaign to get Stranger's Wrath (at least) back on the list.

Let's all try. It is such a good set of games and we should all email them and say "fix the 360 so we can play the OddWorld games!"

VIVA EL ODDWORLD!

This game is just another great notch in the OddWorld fransise. You start out as a bounty hunter named Stranger. On your way through OddWorld you capture and earn money for bring bountys in dead or alive. You capture live ammo and set traps. Strangers job is to collect 20,000$ for an operation. I'm not going to tell what it is but it shocked me when I beat the game.

Pros

Nice game between 1st and 3rd person action
Awome shooter like none ever
Seting traps with live ammo
Cutsceens looke great

Cons

Its extrmely cold out side
Theres nothing good on TV

Can't wait for the follow up to Stranger's Wrath

The Brutal Ballad of Fangus

"Stranger's Wrath" is a very original shoot-em-up game which also has mild puzzle and strategic elements. You control The Stranger, a mysterious bounty hunter who wields a crossbow with unique ammunition: little animals that you find hopping around dusty canyons and remote valleys. Each of the ten or so kinds of animal ammunition has a different effect, such as distracting, stunning, or blowing up your enemies. They're all pretty cute and some even make comments to you as they sit on your crossbow while you're stalking bad guys.

In "Stranger's Wrath" you're mostly accepting missions from townsfolk to capture bandits who are kidnapping, stealing and otherwise terrorizing the local citizens. A typical mission involves infiltrating an enemy compound, killing or capturing all of the henchmen, and then cornering and nabbing the boss at the heart of his lair. Each enemy can either be killed or captured (and put in your bottomless bag of enemies). Capturing is more difficult (especially in the case of the bosses) but nets you a more lucrative reward from the townspeople. You can buy a few items in town which give you minor upgrades, but mostly you play with the Stranger you start out with, getting access to new sorts of ammunition as you advance through the early missions.

The graphics are pretty good in "Stranger's Wrath". A lot of the game is set in an Old West environment, and you can practically taste the dust when you're in the tired old frontier towns. Some of the bosses' lairs are interestingly convoluted industrial complexes, and the outdoor environments are sometimes lush and pretty. The sound effects are a satisfying collection of thunks, squeals and pings. The voice work is over-the-top and cartoonish, which befits this funny and sometimes silly game.

I do have a few complaints. One is that the developers didn't implement a "difficult" setting, which means there isn't much incentive to replay the game -- I sold it as soon as I finished it. Otherwise I would have replayed the game at least part of the way through to see if it improved with more challenging enemies.

Another gripe is that while the game seems like it should be good for kids, with its cute ammunition and variety of amusing animal-ish characters, there is some swearing in the game that contrasts with the rest of the cartoony environment.

Still, I enjoyed "Stranger's Wrath" and it was satisfying to finish it. Invading enemy compounds and experimenting with different combinations of ammo is fun, the story and setting are odd but worth experiencing, and the game is different enough from every other shooter to make it a worthwhile play.

A good renter, but why buy?

Oddworld Stranger's Wrath is the newest game in the oddworld series. You play Stranger, a bounty hunter, who hunts outlaws for moolah. The money, we learn, is going to be used to pay for Stranger's mysterious surgery.

Like the other oddworld games, this one follows the fight of the innocent indigenous people of oddworld against greedy corporate . . .things. Unlike the other oddworld games, this one doesn't involve Abe at all.

The gameplay is very smooth. You can switch from a first-person shooter mode, to a third-person mode. The much-touted "live" ammo, feature, allows you to fire critters from a cross bow, which, in turn, maul, sting, or electricute bad guys.

This game has more bosses than I've seen in a while. Each one is unique, and you can try to either capture them alive, or bring them in dead.

So, why only three stars? For one thing, the camera in 3rd person mode can be a pain at times - not moving where you want it to go. I was also disappointed at the lack of cinematic sequences, this one only had five or six, while it seems like the other oddworld games tend to have more. To be fair, the sequences were very well done, there just weren't enough of them. Another problem was the playability - after just a few hours, I had beaten the game, and I have to say I have no desire to pick it back up. But my major beef with this game is leaving out Abe. Why would you make another oddworld game, and then not have its hero in it?

Overall, this game was very original and very graphically pleasing. It was worth renting, but I doubt I'll ever want to play it again.

Sleeper hit of 2005!!!

This game is simply amazing. Oddworld Stranger's Wrath has excedded all my expectations for it. I wasn't a big fan of Munch's Oddysee, and never played the first two Oddworld games, but this game rocks! It's the best 1st/3rd person action/adventure game I've played in a long long time. What makes this game so great is it's just plain FUN. The graphics are incredible, the sound is great, the story is deep and entertaining, the control and gameplay are perfect. For a game that seemingly came out of nowhere and didn't get much hype, I think it won't get the attention (sales) that it so richly deserves. Don't miss out on this one!

This game is like no other that I have ever played. The graphics, music, and game play are all outstanding. The animation of the characters is flawless and the voices are original with some very creative dialogue. I usually don't spend time with games like this (more of a sports guy). However, I have found myself addicted to OddWorld: Stranger's Wrath.

Overall, the game is really fun.

The beginning disappointed me a bit; the tutorial portion just seemed too long for me. The first three or so bounties are too easy and it feels like you're just collecting money. Maybe I'm the only one with that complaint, BUT it doesn't matter much anyway, because the game picks up and the boss fights become more challenging. Anyone reading this is probably already aware that it is a first person shooter mainly (you can also go in 3rd person view, which is helpful whenever you aren't fighting enemies; also, you can hit w/ your hands in 3rd person view). There are various types of ammo with different affects, (you purchase, find, or hunt for the ammo) which are upgraded later on in the game. Don't let anyone tell you that it's impossible to capture some of the bounties alive; you have to damage the boss's stamina bar, not his/her health bar, in order to capture them alive. One particular combination works very well, but I won't give it away in case it's considered too much information.

The characters are interesting (my favorite is Jo'Mamma) and there's quite a bit of humor in it. I like the second half better because it seems more urgent and there are parts that are more like battlefields with a lot of enemies rushing in at once from different places. There's one timed level, but it actually isn't that difficult unless you're a perfectionist and want to kill everyone attacking you. The most difficult creatures to beat are the spiders.

My biggest complaints about the game would be that the last battle was a bit disappointing/too easy and the game was too short. It also would have been nice to have a bit more variety in the boss fights. I have another complaint regarding money, but it's a spoiler, so I won't mention it. As far as plot goes, it leaves you wondering a little bit, but the story is interesting. A sequel could definitely be written if someone wanted.

I haven't played any of the other Oddworld games; what attracted me to the game was the western style. The graphics didn't disappoint. The cut scenes are especially amazing. My sister commented that it has the best graphics she's seen on the xbox ("It looks like a movie!"), granted that she isn't one to play video games much and hasn't seen any of the other games on other next generation consoles. Still, the graphics are some of the best I've seen. The style is more original than most (especially since so many WWII games and the like are being released). It has a good storyline, with two major twists (don't worry, I won't spoil anything).

I'd definitely recommend it; if you're short on cash (like I am) and have to be picky about what you can afford, then I'd suggest just renting it until you have extra spending money. The game is pretty linear so I don't know how much replay value it might have and it is pretty short. I beat it in about six days (a few hours each day on average, but the number varied).

+ if you aren't scared of possible spoilers: someone else has written a really good walkthrough for the boss fights in the first half of the game that can be found @ http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/xbox/file/oddworld_sw_bounty.txt - it will help if you have any difficulty figuring out how to get some of the later bounties alive.
