Ok, this is review is to tell all you people who hate the game because of "BAD GAMEPLAY" or "NOT ENOUGH GAMEPLAY" to know really what this game is. I play tons and tons of games, and I am mainly an RPG player, I dont like many action agme because they all seem the same. I dont like most of the other stealth games (Splineter Cell has a bad story, and I would say the gameplay is only a tad bit better than this). The main reason i like this game, is because it feels like an RPG , and has a better story than most games (Including RPGs) out their. Yes better than most of the final fantasy games, BG1 and BG2 , NWN, KOTOR , IWD , IWD2 ...and many more. Its not that those games arnt as good, but this game has such a good sotry, that they could make a movie out of the cut-scenes and It wo9uld most likely get good reviews, and if they made a live action movie , well god...it would be top of the charts. So people, if you LOVE good stories , but also like awesome gameplay. Then this is the perfect game for you. And I would play the original one (or twin snakes for GC) first, because the story on that builds up onto this one. If you play the original one , and then this one right after it, its like watching the lord of rings trilegy or something like that...thats how good it is. Thankyou for taking the time to read my review.

Yeah, pretty sweet

I'm not at all what you would call a metal gear fan. Substance is all i've played, but I still find it really enjoyable. Here's my critique: (SPOILER)

The game play here is pretty enjoyable, although it is so frequently cut off by numerous twists in the interminably complicated plot. Doing things like hiding behind corners and jumping out with your M4 to blow apart an unsuspecting guard, or coming up behind a soldier and snapping his neck, is pretty fun, I have to admit. It may be short, but this game is very sweet.
In terms of the plot itself, I have little complaints. I actually enjoyed it-a lot. The real-world references tied in with the fantasy of the game itself made the plot very surreal and enjoyable. The concepts that are presented in the plot itself are mind boggling and very entertaining. The final statement that this game makes is a profound one that society needs to keep in mind- We don't exist just to procreate and continue our species. We exist to pass down our desires, dreams, history and culture as well. Thats what makes us human. And we shouldn't let anything-including the swell of political correctness that in many ways hinders our freedom of thought-get in the way of that. That message is beautifully stated at the conclusion of the game's long, dramatic plot. I also enjoyed the characters a great deal. Snake is that perfect blend of a hard-edged, jaded warrior and a level headed human being that you don't find in many stories. Raiden doesn't impress me at all- he's not a convincing soldier to the least and he clearly isn't a smart individual (half his codec conversations include him going hmm? What are you talking about? the what now? etc...) The ninja was really an enticing character (I have never played mgs1 so this is the first time I've been introduced to him) and calling him deepthroat when his identity was secret was very clever I thought.
However, I do have some gripes with the plot. There are a lot of sequences in the cutscenes and codec conversations where the dialogue... I don't know, doesn't quite fit. That is to say, it's not how normal people talk. Also, there are various instances where the characters crack what Hideo Kojima thinks is a joke (when raiden is learning about the nodes and says "did you say nerd?!), which turns out to be just stupid. Maybe I just don't understand Japanese humor, I dunno. Also, there are a lot of places where the story gets a little unreal. For instance, when Revolver Ocelot kills all of the ak-47 weilding soldiers in the hold of the tanker using only his six shooter, or when Solidus kills the three metal gear using only his submachine gun, when you've been trying the whole time to kill them with missiles. Also, the whole bit about Fortune really being lady luck...was a little goofy. Oh well. I actually enjoyed some of that a little bit. It's what made the plot what it is. If it were true to life, it'd be boring.
Also, I'll be the first to admit that at times (just like this review), the story gets really drawn out. For instance, when E.E. dies and Otacan decides to recap his entire life story. Maybe her death was more tragic that I thought, but still. Let's cut to the chase. Also, there were a lot of places where there were long, drawn out sequences describing something that you could easily have figured out for yourself. Either HIdeo thought we needed our hands held throughout this whole game, or he's just trying to be dramatic. Either way, it gets boring.
Ah yes, one more complaint: METAL GEAR SOLID THREE LOOKS INCREDIBLE BUT IS ONLY FOR PS2!

fantastic game

Hereýs the deal, folks: MGS2:S is a fantastic game. In my opinion, it transcends the hype and delivers a unique espionage experience that you canýt find anywhere else. If youýre someone who thinks this game canýt measure up to other Xbox titles, (Especially Splinter Cell) youýre dead wrong. MGS2:S utilizes the undisputed power of the console and delivers its message with a graphic bang.
In terms of story, this game is unfathomably exciting (A bit long at times, but otherwise great) with plot twists that keep you guessing till the very end. Like any good action story, everybody ends up betraying everybody else, until thereýs no one left to trustýor is there?
However, despite this gameýs greatness, I can cite a few drawbacks here or there. For one thing, Snake was only in the game for about twenty minutes (ten minutes of which you spend photographing Metal Gear, which gets a tad dull) and as we all know, Snake kicks ... Then you play as Raiden, who in my opinion is a bit of a pansy. His voice sounds like a ten year old girl, and you hear it for way too long.
Also, the controls are a little fidgety and fairly awkward at first, until you get the hang them. Those are really the only two grievances I have with this game.
I absolutely love the VR and alternate missions, as well as the skateboarding minigame and other extra features. They really give the game an extra edge and are probably what allowed me to give it five stars.
So, in summary, if you don't have this game for your Xbox, purchase it immediately. There's really nothing to think about.

No wonder why it has "Solid" in the title!

This game, is, the best stealth action game, ever to hit the planet. Well, going like this, I wont get anywhere so...Heres my review.

Storyline:
The story in Metal Gear Solid 2 is that countries have made giant mechanical robots known as Metal Gears. Metal Gears are not just mechs, they are much more, having nuclear capablilites and able to go anywhere;land, sea, air, etc., the only thing capable of fighting them are other Metal Gear., as stated by the colonel in the first chapter of the game. But an evil Russain terrorist group is after them, and the leaders are worse than the group itself. The leaders are, Dead Cell, containing Fortune, Vamp, and Fatman, and there is more enimies, but I'll let you find them for yourself. Fortune is a girl that cannot be hit by metal objects because of magnetics, and she has a very big gun, which is a Rail gun, that is pretty much....How will I put this...Scary, especially since she is completely crazy. Next is Vamp, who is a ultra-fast-moving vampire who has a fancy for knives and blood; a bad mix, for the good guys at least. Also Vamp is not called "Vamp" because he is a Vampire, its because hes bisexual...LoL, you will find this out by calling Pliskin (snake), quite a bit throuout the game. And then there is FatMan, a obese male who loves bombs and his hands.
Gameplay:
The gameplay in this game is downright awesome. It is so realistic, sometimes you get paranoid. You can peek around walls, hide in boxes, put magazines in the path of guards, so you can distract them, or you can shoot their radio out and kill them. O ya, did I mention holding people up? Well I didnt so I will, If you go up behind an enemy, you will say freeze and the enemy will put his hands in the air. Then you walk in front of him and if you aim at his head or crotch, he will give you dogtags, if he has them. These dogtags play an important role in the game, if you collect enough, then when you complete the game, you get sectret bandanas, for Snake, and Wigs, for Raiden. They allow the player to be invisible or have unlimited ammo.
Graphics:
The graphics of this game are some of the smoothest on Xbox. You can see right down to the facial features and the bullet, or tranquilizer dart in their body. The pixel amount is also amazing, no blocky items, only smooth. And there are no glitches.
Sound:
Ask anybody, this game has the best voice acting of any game ever made. Its none of those monatone voices, its all professional acting.

Gameplay-10/10
Graphics-10/10
Sound-10/10
Overall, 10/10
Wow, this took me a LONG time to write, and this is, hands down, the best game ever.

Great but not

The game is very fun for the short amount of time it is. The game is one big level so there isnt a whole lot to do but it can get hard. I probably would not have bought it if i had known it was gonna be 90% movies. But its fun i played it and beat it in a week but it keep you busy and entertained for a while.

Finally earns its price tag.

I rented this game a while ago at my local video store and boy, was it worth my five bucks =). Well, finally I purchased it about a week ago, and boy was it worth it.

For those of you who don't understand why this was orignally considered a "short game," there was plenty of sneaking and saving the world action, but this was all amidst EXTREMELY long cut scenes(we're talking a good 60 minutes for some of them). I probably would have finished the first part in around an hour were it not for the huge cut-scenes, which took the time to a good 7 hours or so. Wow. This was not a long game and Konami realized this after what I'm sure was nearly millions and millions of disappointed consumer letters. Substance was what the original needed. So here's your Substance.

Some of you may remember other Metal Gear Solid for Playstation and its "expansion pack," VR Missions. I loved the fact that there were now around 300 missions, plus the fantastic story for me to play. MGS2:Substance took away the need for an "expansion pack."

Game Play: A
I would have given it an "A+" if the cutscenes weren't so massive! I did enjoy the cinematic feel of the game, but I didn't want to watch a 7 hour movie, but that's not to say that the game play isn't fun...because it is. Metal Gear Solid gave players the first good "T.E.A."(tactical espionage action). Everything that you remember from the last one is in this one..and then some. From the silenced pistol, to Snake's horrible smoking habit that helps and hurts you, to the many, many cardboard boxes. You can lean around corners to get a better view--but now you can shoot around them(YAY!). You can still snap necks--but now you can use guards as human shields, AND you can hide bodies in lockers, in corners, and even off the side of a ship. When you kill a guard now, you track blood--and for that reason, you may want to just tranquilize them(also a new feature). You can now shoot out lights, you can shoot out windows(which looks fantastic!), there is rain(which produces a few framerate slow-downs), there's a fantastic first-person mode(that you can use to shoot down sea-gulls!), you can distract guards with porn magazines, you can hold up guards(and shoot and destroy their radios so that they can't call for back-up!!), you have to dispose of bombs, you can slip on things. Oh, this gameplay is fantastic.

Many people also compare this game to Splinter Cell--and typically they say Splinter Cell is superior. Somewhat I agree, but this game I consider more action oriented(and a bit more fun).

Also, the newest and best thing about this game(maybe) is the inclusion of a lot(a lot meaning hundreds) of virtual reality training missions. There are so many modes of these including bomb disposal, sneaking, weapons mode(training for all weapons), eliminate guards and so much more, not to mention that you have 4 or 5 characters to do all the missions with. Also you can read articles about the past stories(one of which which is 129 pages long) to get the jist of the games.

Well, overall, buy this game, play it, and enjoy it. I know you will. I did, and I still am.

Happy fragging!!

Wonderful Game

Let's get this straight: Konami and director Hideo Kojima rerelease the already excellent Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty, and include hundreds of new V.R. Training missions? This is the ultimate Metal Gear Solid 2 pacakge!
Okay, having played the Playstation 2 version to death, it took me a little while to get used to the contols for the XBOX version. For the most part the controls are the same as on PS2 except the XBOX only has two shoulder buttons, (instead of four on the PS2) so First-Person mode is now accessed by pressing in on the left thumbstick. This is the only main difference control-wise.
Graphically, it hasn't been improved over the PS2 version, but that's not really such a bad thing, since the PS2 version was one of the most beautiful games ever released.
The V.R. missions are unbelievably fun! I ca't put the game down! Each mission is designed to help you with different skills in the game, even ones like taking pictures which is barely even touched in the main game at all. The V.R. missions start out fairly easy, but they get very challenging. Don't be surprised if you're attempting the same mission over and over again. But this is a good thing. I like to keep playing, because I feel far more satisfied when I finally complete a difficult mission.
V.R. missions will have you doing all sorts of strange things: Hiding from Godzilla size guards, taking photographs of ghosts, protecting an unconscious Meryl Silverburg (from the first Metal Gear Solid) from thirty aproaching guards, etc.
Plus, you get to play through the V.R. missions with many different charcters, and some characters have more difficult missions than others. Raiden, Snake, Ninja (Raiden wearing Ninja suit), Plisken, and more.
This game will keep you busy for many, many hours.

not as "solid" as it's predecessor.

way back in 87 when the industry of videogaming was still in it's infancy, a somewhat obscure nes game METAL GEAR not only
gave me hours of pure entertainment, it also hooked me on videogaming. now several years after 2 sequels, we now have MGS SOL: Substance for microsoft's blackbox.

to put thing pureand simple, i was impressed by the intro with the cool movie-like music courtesy of composer gregory williams.and even ore impressed with the graphics and gameplay
but to be honest, the story line especially during the last 45 minsof the game was too unbearable to say the least.

first off, SNAKE is only playable within the first 35% of the game making way for prtty boy RAIDEN who looks to fruity lke a reject from 80's band, kagashoojoo and te additional cast lke his whiny girlfriend and emma does nothing but slow th games progress especially during those codec moments.

the antagonists=villians were the less impressive thanFOXHOUND if not wannabees. FORTUNE is a female version of VULCAN RAVEN with a backstory no beter than sniper wolf, VAMP looks like a ... version of PSYCHO MANTIS as amatter of fact talk tosnake on the codec afer youv'e taken out the hrrier, there's a lil scandelous backstory between VAMP and the marine colonel. HEH-HEH
SOLIDUS looks like SPIDER-MAN'S DOCTOR OCTRPUS with those snake arms. FATMAN was fun to take on as you try to defuse his bombs while he's puttin bulets behind your back. oh well at least we still have ocelot, well sorta....

i like the lil reference o snake's alter ego" J.G. PLISKN which gives nod to KURT RUSSEL'S SNAKE PLISKEN of ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK
once again HIDEO KOJAMA hashis characters given long philosophical speeches=morals and the jazz like ending music
makes MGS2 lok more like adrama than an espionage action game.

overall MGS is very playable with the bonuses like bos mode and casting teater not to mention the VR MISSIONS AND SNAKE TALES.
but story wise it lacks the "oomph" that made MGS a SOLID hit.

atleast DEVIL MAY CRY andpanzer dragon orta won't disapoint.

"IF IT AIN'T BROKE.."
