MGS 2 isn't quite as memoriable as the first, but its good.

We find our hero Snake secretly boarding an oil tanker ship that belongs to the United States Marines. The reason: there is a new Metal Gear, codenamed Ray, as it's cargo. Just as our boy Snake gets on board, the entire ship is brutally taken over by terrorists of Russian decent. Just as Snake makes his way to the bowels of the ship where it's cargo is being held, and after a moment of intensity between the Marines and terrorists, Revolver Ocelot jumps into Ray and sinks the ship killing everyone and spilling oil everywhere.... skip a few years ahead and we find ourselves controller a new comer named Raiden as he sneaks into a huge facility in the middle of the ocean called "The Big Shell" which was built to contain the oil spill Ocelot caused..and which has also been taken over by Russian terrorists. Raiden's original mission objectives are to rescue the hostages of Big Shell, but as the game moves on Raiden must stop the demented FOXHOUND unit and put an end to the Metal Gear Ray project.

For once you can go into first person view to manually aim in MGS2: Substance, which is really helpful. You can jump over railings and hang over ledges to hide from hostiles, you can roll to knock them down, and you can do the infamous melee combo to knock 'em out. Both as Raiden & Snake you collect a lot of weapons including a tranq gun, a SOCOM handgun, an "adult entertainment" magazine, an assault rifle, chaff & frag grenades, a sword and many more. You can actually swim in this game which is a real plus. Now you can "hold up" terrorists for their dog tags... not really important but pretty fun. At one point you'll find yourself running around disarming bombs all throughout Big Shell which was kinda fun.. thought I'd mention that.

Oh yes, this is the first game where if you take down an enemy or are spotted, back up actually comes. They use radioes to contact each other, and if you are really good at aiming, can destroy their radio. It was a neat little idea.

What really seperates Substance from the original Sons of Liberty is it's huge VR mission system, and the mini games "Snake Tales". We'll start with the VR missions - there are probably over 100 of them since you have to play a bunch with Raiden, Snake, Pliskin, Snake in different suits, etc. These missions can range anywhere from "use stealth to get to the end" all the way to "snipe all the enemies who come near the curry". If properly completed you unlock a mini game where you can skateboard as Snake.. meh. "Snake Tales" stars Snake in various missions on Big Shell.. thats really it.

I'm gonna be straight with you guys - MGS2: Substance has amazing graphics and even better music. Everything in this game looks so real and textured.. it's really beautiful for the PS2. I mean seagulls actually do their business on Big Shells roof and you can slip on it, how much more realistic can you get?? The music is superb.. words can't even explain it. Sometimes you'll feel depressed (when he time calls for it) orfeel pumped up for a big battle through the music..truley helps the overall feel & atmosphere of the Substance.

Characters... FOX-HOUND (and MGS2 in general) have some real entertaining characters to say the least, all with a fictatious background that is pretty miserable to say the least. The best is Fat Man because hes fat, roller blades, is funny, and plants bombs all over the place. You'll meet up with a familiar ninja ;), the daughter of someone who died on the Marine tanker, Otacon's sister who is just as lame and annoying as Otacon himself, and many more.

The only downfall is the length of the game and the story near the end of the game. The ending was so confusing I don't even get it... as your running around your getting codec calls from Colonel Campbell saying, "Go ahead and take a rest, I'll save your game. Turn it off." or "Hari Kari Siscors 69!!"... then it turns out everything is a VR mission? Lame. Also there is A LOT, and I stress A LOT, of talking in this game. It's rumored that about 2/3 of the actual game is talking.

This review is too long for it's own good, so I'm gonna sum it up now - if your a fan of the Metal Gear Solid games or if you really enjoy sneaking around...or talking....you have to play this game. It's fun, has awesome graphics & music, and it's a pretty cheap game nowadays. Go for it.

OH HELL NO SAME MISSIONS AS PS2 DID YOU HEAR THAT REVEIWER! IT COULD TURN PEOPLE AWAY! HELLOO THIS GAME IS ONE OF THE BEST GAMES EVER MADE KID! OK THIS GAME IS GREAT THE GRAPHICS ARE SO AWESOME PROBALY EVEN BETTER ON X-BOX EATHER WAY PS2 OR X-BOX GOOD GAME ! BUT ITS BETTER ONT HE BOX BECAUSE THIS IS SUBSTANCE THERES MORE FEATURES IN THE GAME LIKE FOR INSTANCE IF YOU BEAT THE GAME YOU CAN PLAY LIKE A BATTLE MATCH ON A BOSS FOR FUN ITS KINDA ARCADE STYLE ONCE YOU PLAY THAT MODE AND ITS PREETY FUN. BUT 1 PLAYER LETS TALK ABOUT THAT AWESOME STORY LINE IT IS SO GREAT THIS FEELS LIKE IT ACTUALLY HAPPEND IN REAL LIFE AND SNAKE IS SO COOL HE'S MY DOG! I've seen Plisken(Snake) in a gun fight against Ocelot on the heliport of the Big Shell. I've also read about Nastasha making an appearance in the game. The sad thing is you don't see it at all in the story, VR missions or Snake tales. You know that you were unable to explore Shell 2 entirely with Riaden, but you were suppose to be able to with Snake with the new playable character option. The reason I bought Substance is to be able to play as Snake or Riaden in there alternate forms through the entire game. This game is more or less a F*CKING RIP OFF. KONAMI I AND MANY OTHERS WANT TO PLAY THE GAME THE WAY IT IS MEANT TO BE PLAYED. THE WAY THAT I'VE SEEN AND READ ABOUT!!
P.S. One other thing that I did not mention is that I have a PS2 but, if I'm not mistaken X-BOX owners can choose to play as Snake or Raiden PS2 owners should be able to do the same thing because both games on the back of there packages says NEW Playable Characters. IF one console has that option and the other doesn't that there my friends is FALSE ADVERTISEMENT!

To make this review short and simple.
This game SUCKS!!!
Its a huge disapointment!
It can`t be compared to the great MGS1.
The only good part of the game is the begining. Where you control solid snake.
And then the rest of the game you control a guy. Who basicly looks like a girl.. And that hair. 80s is not cool anymore!
And it have to be the worst story in any game ever!!!
Its a script from HELL!!!
A 5 year old could write a better story!
It takes every turn there is.
And now I am being soft on the game..
I regret buying this game.
And I have never played it since I finished it.
Id rather play the great MGS1 one more time.
The sequel to this one(when it comes out), is a sure rental. Before buying it.
To finish this review of: once again, this game SUCKS!!!

All you people say oh amazing gameplay. Please tell me how much time you actually get to play. Oh... maybe 10% of the time at the most? And can the story line be weaker? Everyone is double crossing, and random life being started in the White House... hmm... Yeah don't play this unless you are looking for a movie.

I bought this game on a whim. When i got it home i was very impressed. It started slow and lost my interest, i felt like i had wasted my money and wished i had gotten Splinter Cell, but as it went on i got immerced and couldn't put it down. The story line was very "annoying" when every three lines some one says you where given a fake, or hes not this guy but this guy, and what your working with him? The constant codec calls are not as bad as previous gamers have said but are annoying. The cut scenes are long but are good breaks. The game had more potential. I have not yet played the snake missons yet but here that they are stupid. The game is incredibly short only three settings? and one is about forty five minutes long. It could have been longer. In the easy modes it is so simple it gives you reason to play it in harder modes. My biggest complaint was that you had the katana for just minutes it would have been a silent and effective weapon in other parts of the game.
FINAL ANALYSIS
Good gameplay, controls and graphics but to short and to involved plus if you didn't play the other games (Like me) You dont know about alot that they are talking about 4 out of 5

A great start for a game, but it bored me to death. The actual gameplay isn't too bad, graphics could use some extra attention but not too bad. Having played Halo the controls on this game are far inferior to Halos controls,but every game is inferior to Halo. The main problem with this game is the constant storyline which interupts gameplay constantly. Their is very few instances where there are more than ten minutes of actual gameplay without being interupted from your "phone" and having to go through another fifteen minutes of mindless plot. Also the game is very short and I probably should have gotten BloodRayne instead. I gave it three stars simply because it has potential I still don't understand what all the hype was about though.

The game is fun! Don't let anyone tell you anything different. No, Splinter Cell isnt better, not saying it's worse either... There is so much to do in this game... You can do 30 vr missions and your vr mission completed percentage will only go up like 3%. I love that! I don't really care much for the storyline, though some parts like when emma dies, it almost chokes me up.. I SAID ALMOST.. Heh.... If you don't have Metal Gear Solid 2; SOL, this is a must have for Xbox.... There is some slowdown on the tanker when you're outside though., but not enough to make the game unenjoyable. all the people who cant decide if splinter cell or mgs2 is better, then get both..

I rented this game and it was a total disapointment--you spend most of the time listening to the characters b***h and complain to each other about everything. For example: if you walk around a corner and theres an enemy standing gaurd, instead of ambushing them like in other games, your pansy-a$$ character calls his conections and describes what kind of outfit the enemy is wearing,etc. Like in two minutes from now your really gonna care what color pants the guy was wearing!!It seems as if half the game is listening to pointless conversations or watching lame cut scences. Needless to say I returned this game way before it was due back. Keep this "saga" on the playstations; bring on halo, timesplitters 2, and unreal championchip!
