I must admit that I'm a pretty big fan of Role Playing Games, I'll play them in virtually any format. After playing "Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance" on the Xbox I knew they were at least heading in the right direction with these games development. So when I saw "Dungeons and Dragons: Heroes" I decided it was definitely worth trying out.
Granted this isn't in one of Dungeons and Dragons' specialized settings like Forgotten Realms, but I thought they did a good job on it overall. The premise is sort of typical for a Fantasy setting, the evil wizard wants to rule the world. I have to admit my bias that I typically enjoy these games regardless of cliché storyline. This game features multi-player co-op up to four players on one system. This is one of the other major things I look for. The one thing I think really makes a game great is that the player can play through the story line with a friend. Even "Pariah" was semi-fun because I was able to play it with a friend and that game was kind of stupid. I'm not sure if I would ever sit down and plays "Heroes" by myself, so I recommend you play it with another person at the very least. Anyway, the only problem with that co-op ability is that it suffers the same kind of camera hang up like any other overhead view game on the console. Your characters have to stick together and be visible on the screen together. That's a limitation I accept when I purchase these games, so people should just deal with it. At least in this game you could rotate the camera around, unlike in "Hunter: The Reckoning", which was infuriating at times.
The story is a little different in the way they present it, so when I say you have to fight the wizard, they setup why you have to fight him in a fairly unique manner. These little twists to a basic story premise are usually what keep me coming back for more. Basically your characters have faced this wizard, Kaedin, before, but that was 150 years ago. In an epic battle long ago all of the player characters died in that battle bringing Kaedin down. Now Kaedin has been resurrected by some evil clerics hoping to harness his power, but they couldn't control him and now he's loose again to take over the kingdom of Baele. So the only recourse was to raise the player characters, which had defeated him before, in a like manner.
You're characters start off at level one so you have to do a decent amount of questing to build up your characters strengths. This isn't like the epic computer games where you can choose even the minutest details about your character like in "Icewind Dale" or "Neverwinter Nights," but "Heroes" basically has a preset arrangement. You can choose to be a fighter, wizard, cleric or rogue. So you basically choose the class and you go from there, you don't get that much customization. A background story for your character is even written up in the booklet. For the level up areas they use the "Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance" method where you spend points to buy special skills... the interface is practically the same. It worked great in the other game, so why change something that's perfect? Another interesting level-up concept that was introduced in this game was that throughout the game your characters can find these items called "soul shards." I think the shards harnessed some of the Player Characters' former might. There are twenty in all throughout the game hidden in different areas, when you find five your characters weapons level up. It was an interesting concept and I really liked it. The weapons image even changes as it gets stronger.
So the main quest is that you have to find the gems that harnessed all of Kaedin's power and use them against him. Throughout your quest to find the gems you get brought to all kinds of different lands and there are a few side quests to keep your characters more occupied. However, the amount of side quests is small in comparison to the more epic games like "Planescape: Torment" for example. Overall the game was pretty short for an RPG, especially one that has such an epic background. However, the story was pretty well written and has some pretty good twists with the characters you can interact with in the area. Overall I would say I enjoyed the Baldur's Gate games a little more, but this game had its moments. The graphics were a little better than the first Baldur's Gate game at least. The only draw back is your characters couldn't jump in this game. That was a stupid limitation in my opinion. Being able to jump is always more fun.
When we were playing the game my friends and I found a pretty interesting way to cheat in this game if anyone is interested. Throughout the game you find elixirs of strength, wisdom, dexterity, etc. You can give all of these potions to one character and save the game. Then the other characters can leave the game and come back as that character you gave the potions to. See you can choose whatever character you want and you can have more than one wizard in play at the same time and it doesn't bother the system! It's a good way to have more than one fighter or whatever in the game if you have a couple friends that want to be the same class. It at least gets around the system. Both characters just have the same name, that's all. Anyway, so now that you've come back as the same character you have all those potions, so you give them to the regular person and then leave the game again. You come back as your regular characters, save the game. The increase is exponential because the character can get a bunch each time you come back and give them more. Then you just divide them and give the loot to your friends to use too. Despite the fact that my friends and I had around 200 Constitution we still found the game challenging and almost died in some areas.
So overall I thought this was a pretty worthwhile game. It doesn't have huge amounts of replay value in the end, but it's something your friends and you can run through once in a while if you're desperate to pull out an old game. I think this game does the Dungeons and Dragons universe justice and it is really fun to play through. In the booklet it even suggests that you take the game beyond just the video console and take it to the tabletop and play your characters in more adventures. It's a pretty neat suggestion, one my friends and I haven't tried yet. I'm not sure this game was worth its original price of 50 dollars when it first came out, but to pick it up used is certainly worthwhile!
Fun to play, But alot better with multi player

With out a doubt, this is a great x-box game. I know that a lot of people say it's "boring" or "to easy", And yea i agree it is a little easy, but why don't you just turn the difficulty on hard in the pause menu. I'm sure that will make it a little more challenging.
Second, This is a very loooooonnnnnngggggg game. But when you think about it. Those are the games you like. i don't know about everybody else, but for me, as soon as you beat it, you don't feel like playing it anymore. This game for some reason i don't mind playing over. And when you play with four people you get almost three times the amount of gold out of chests than just one.
Overall, i think this is going to be a classic game, especially to play with your friends, and i would recommend it to anybody who like these type of games.
a good team-playing game

If you've played Baldur's Gate before, then *Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes* will be a piece of cake for you. In fact, I found it to be a bit too easy, especially when battling the "bosses" for each level.
Nonetheless, team-playing is always fun with destroying the enemies, collecting coins, weapons and rewards, discussing strategies with your teammates and the like. The best part is solving the riddle or looking for sacred items in order to advance to the other side or the next level.
I was the rogue which I accidently chose because I wanted to be the wizard. So, that meant I had to battle with a bow and arrows and an array of swords (cutlass, kris, etc.) My teammate was a fighter that has this awesome "war cry" that, when used, paralyzes enemies in their place for a few seconds. This gave us the opportunity to destroy them before the spell fades away.
Overall, it was a fun game! Now, I just need to go to the bathroom and put on a band-aid on my raw thumbs. Played this game over the weekend until we finished it!
Nothing Special,.......Believe Me !!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, if you love Dungeons and Dragons or classic Gaunlet/Diablo RPG styled games and such,.... but overall this game is very bland and somewhat boring!!! There is no innovation or nothing special that will have you saying hey this game is freaken' awesome man.... yeah!!! "Dungeons and Dragons: Heroes" is a complete clone of "Balder's Gate" similar in so many ways,.... it's actually kind of scary!!!
Yes, it was fun for a little while playing around with the 4 player co-op, which was a blast and even along withthe vast weapon and magic combos.... which gave you and your character a lot of options, when leveling up and such,..... beyond that there isn't much else to say. The level design is bland; the combat get's repetive, the graphics are choppy, and the game is overall a breeze; with maybe the exception of finding all 20 soul shards that will power up your weapons and abilites and such. The most annoying thing of all being the classic barrel/box smashing,.... hello were in the 21th century,.... be free to be more creative!!!
Besides, the flaws though the game can be fun, like the boss battles are farily fun, but it was a game I played for awhile,.... left sitting there for about a year and a half and ended up really getting into it, though the game was barely a challenge to a gamer of my level easily beating the game less than 15 hours flat, combinding all the time I actually put into the game. It is a very solid game,.... but the camera pissed me off zooming in and out at will give me a break. You do though get a bunch of Character options throughout the game. You get to choose between:
-a Fighter(Human): Built on strength/brute force and along with deffense, many physical attack combos: sweet finishing moves: ~ Assec. Weapon Sword
-a Cleric(Dwarf): Built on Wisdom and Charma, vast spell and weapon combos make this character interesting ~ Assec Weapon: Hammer
-a Wizard(Elf) Based around Intellegence and Magicial spells, and some other neat tricks ~ Assec. Weapon: Staff;
-a Rogue(Half link/ hobbit like creature) Based around Dexlerity and Technique, very small with a nice seat of daggers for serious death dealing ~ Assec Weapon (s): Daggers
Each character is unique, with customizeable inventories attack combos, spell, magic, weapons armor, and anything that you would typically find in any basic RPG or Dungeons and Dragons board game!!! Best played together: it's painfully boring at times playing alone. The only thing that makes this game shine is the 4 player co-op and the D&D liscence, .... people give this game too much credit!!! Hey, in my opinion the orginal Dungeons and Dragons game blows this out of the water,.... and hey what's even the point of buying this with the new Dungeons and Dragons: Online game coming out for the PC, along with other games like Warcraft which are 100 times better than this. You also have new RPG's out like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Fable, and so many others which are way better than this!!!
I mean heck, if you want to blow $50 hard earned on medicore material while, you could get Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic for about $20 bucks be free to it's a free country. Hey, I guess if you love RPG's or D&D you might find a lot of enjoyment,.... but this game is par in my opinion, no more....no less!!! I do think they could have had better quests as well,... for example the side quests were all stupid... and frankly pointless!!! Along with barrel/box smashing action and open treasure chest opening hunting for gold!!! It gets old after awhile,.... game developers try something new!!!
Overall, the game recieves a 3/5, no masterpiece,.... but still it does remind alot like Galunet.... and the co-op was fun as well, there is so much this game could have been better at!!!
Overall Great Game......Especially 4 player co-op!!!!!!!!!!

Dungeons and Dragons: Heroes ...... can be darn fun, the highlight being the 4 player co-op which makes this game different from most of the other games on the market!!! Well, it's the same old, same old, with the Gaunlet/ Dialbo feel and the Balder's Gate look!!!
The game isn't perfect either.....!!! Don't get me wrong it is a great game but, nothing special, well except for the 4 player co-op which keeps this game fun!!! I will admit the environmets were vast and unique, along with plot twists, nice weapon/magic combinations, side quests, and boss battles, along with the search for the for the 20 soul shards!!! The soul shards basicaly power up your weapon, for each 5 your main weapon powers up to a new level!!!
Yeah, Yeah but if you play straight through the game you could beat anywhere from 10-14 hours!!! The boss battles are fairly easy, and the game is pretty easy, the only challenging part would be finding all the soul shards... which actually wasn't hard either!!! The camera gets on my nerves at times, and the gameplay gets bland and repetive after awhile!!! Their may be vast power up options and so-on, like I said it's the same stuff from most RPG's!!! The only two things that make this game stand out from the rest is the: Dunegons and Dragons name and .... of course the co-op!!! You choose from the: Fighter/Human, Cleric/Dwarf, Wizard/Elf, and the Rogue/Halfling... all 4 heroes who defeated the evil wizard Kaiden, now 150 later they are called upon again to save Baele from the ressurected and very much still evil Kaiden!!! Nice, story.....huh!!!!
Yes,Dungeons and Dragons is fun, in fact a must have for any fan, but it could have been better!!! Just look at new next gen RPG's like: Fable, Star Wars: KOTOR, Star Wars: KOTOR 2, and Jade Empire!!! Although, D&D has the co-op and classic feel, it can't compare to the games listed above!!! Maybe back in 99' or 00' this would have been a great, and new innovative game, but being a good game, in an industry filled with awesome games it will be over looked!!!
Pro:
-Great news for Dunegons and Dragons fans
-4 player co-op
-Nice Magic and Fighting combinations
-Nice Environments
-Lot's of cool enemies
-A lot of player options
- When Gaunlet meets Balder's Gate
- Great Concept
- Classic RPG feel!!!
Cons:
-Nothing original
-Bad camera
-Not as fun in single player mode
-Gets old after awhile
-Falls short of expetations, graphic wise!!!
-Sometimes Freezes Up!!!
-Gosh, just like mostly any other RPG, not innovative!!!
As you can see this game has a lot of faults along with a lot of good features, but the 4 player co-op, game play variety, along with the vast environments make you forget about most of the faults!!! Overall, I suggest you at least rent it, if not buy it great game 4/5 stars!!!
Great multiplayer

The main reason I buy console games is for the multiplayer option. If I want a single player game I buy it for my pc. This game is a fun hack & slash game. If you are looking for a complicated game with a wide variety of level ups this game isnt the game for you.
It does include the very basics for for an rpg, and an story line that you have to adhere to strictly whuch is very similiar to baldurs gate for the console. This game is worth buying because of the multiplayer option with up to 4 players co-op.
This game is very addictive and found myself staying up to the late hours of night playing it with my friends.
This is a good game if your looking for something to play with your friends, but if your looking for a good multiplayer rpg your better off with the morrowind series or the baldur gate games for the computer
way too easy!

To be honest, I am horrible at playing video games. I usually can't go anywhere close to beating a game without many months of game play and the guide book.
I beat this game in less than 12 hours of game play with no book and no help of any kind.
No challenge at all for experienced gamers!
Meh.. its fun. Diablo and Gauntlet style.

If your a fan of Gauntlet for the N64 or PS/PS2 then this is a game for you! Its more fun when you have a full 4 party set and everyone joins in. However you can easily play this alone.
Basically its a mix of Gauntlet style fighting and action, with Diablo style character handling and powerups.
The game has some nice graphics to it and well.. all though its a good step in the right direction. It was not what I was expecting.
Was kinda hoping for a style closer to the old D&D games for the PC more customizing and so..
Sad that you cant customize your character or the stats of them to make it FEEL more your own or that your in a D&D game.
As I said, its more like Gauntlet, where you choose one character to be and you build it up with whatever else on your own.
Being that, I dont know too much about replay value, however its a fun mindless game when your bored or just want to play in a group or party. But alone, you probably will get bored.
For parents: This is a good game to buy if you have 2 kids or more and want them to play at the same time. Good type of game for them to play since its not split screen gaming or so.
Good D&D game

This game seems strangely reminiscent of games like Diablo I and II for the PC. That is, it's a hack n' slash dungeons and dragons game. I found the game extremely fun, albeit a bit short. I do not consider myself to be an exceptional gamer and I had very little problem beating this game. The graphics are only above average, although the fire and other lighting effects are great. The gameplay is rather simple, run up to the back guys and hack at em with your sword until they're dead. The button mashing gets a bit repetitive, especially since the enemies are just slightly tweaked recycles from earlier levels. The game is much more fun with friends as you can create a party of up to four characters. When playing as a single player, you can control only one of the characters. I was hoping that the computer would control the others, creating a four-person party, but that is not the case. If you liked Diablo and other hack n' slash games, get this one, it's a lot of fun. More traditional D&D fans might not like the combat system. However, the level up system is quite extensive and offers a lot of variety for the different characters. Overall a great game.
Fun, but not great

Overall, this game was fun and enjoyable, although it is a rehash of things already done. Graphics and sound are good but not awe inspiring, gameplay is fun and quick. Once you completed it, there is little reason to do it again. After using multi-player, I found the game a bit easier in single player mode as you didn't have to share experience or gold so the single character gained levels and equipment faster than with multiple characters. This was a great game to rent, but I would never buy it.
