Buffy's great fun...

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 2 / 4

Okay, I'm not a fan of Buffy and here's why. I am a fan of parapsychology. The study of ghosts, and vampires, and other mythological monstrosities has been an interest of mine since I was a child. Vampires are my favorite monsters because when used correctly they can be a very deep and compelling monster, on that serves as a symbol for what we as a society have become.
My book shelves are jam packed full of vampire literature, from the works of Bram Stoker to the great works of Anne Rice, to the not so good, but still kind of fun work of Laurell K. Hamilton, to the masterpiece of storytelling that is Vampire: The Masquerade, and its many companion game books, or novels based therein, to Hunter: The Reckoning, and so on. I'm no stranger to vampire mythology, both from a modern, and a historical aspect.
It is because of my background in this field that I have always detested Buffy, and their portrayal of vampires. Vampires do not lack a soul. If you take away the soul you take away the vampire's meaning for existence, and usefulness in a good story. They become wallpaper for action flick, and nothing more.
I have only watched a few episodes of Buffy, and no offense to Buffy fans the show is too juvenile for my tastes. However, I'm still looking for a must have title to sit next to Hunter: the Reckoning in my XBox collection. This game may very well end up being that lucky title. This game does almost everything right.
The control and camera scheme is very Soul Reaver like. This made it very easy for me to get into the groove of the game play. My only complaint is that the combat seems a bit simplistic. I find myself kicking my way through out the baddies and the punching seems pretty much ineffective, plus I don't want to risk breaking the sharp objects Buffy can carry.
Another minor complain is the dialogue. Since I'm not a fan of Buffy the bad puns are big time groaners. Although she does have a few good ones, a lot of the puns are just bad. There's also a lot of repeated lines throughout the game play that are repeated so much it gets annoying. It's tempting to hit the mute and leave it on mute until the next cut scene.
The lack of variety to the vampire models is also a complaint. How many times do I have to kill that guy/girl? The Xbox could have easily handled a larger variety of models. The zombies of Nintendo/Capcom's Resident Evil had a great deal of variety. There were very few zombies that looked identical to each other. More variety along these lines would have been nice for the vampire bad guys.
Graphically, Buffy falls somewhere between Eternal Darkness, and Resident Evil. It is step up in character models, but Eternal Darkness was sharper and crisper, still it is impressive graphically, but not as impressive as Resident Evil. Some of the characters don't look as good as others. Buffy and Spike look great, as does her mentor whose name slips me. Xander is okay, as is willow, but whoever that other cheerleader is (the brunette) looks terrible. Again, the models look better than Eternal Darkness, but ED is sharper and crisper, but the game is still not quite on par with RE. I guess Capcom raised the bar unreasonably high, as critics like myself will always compare horror titles to RE.
Definitely a game to buy, I think. But it may not be for all non-Buffy fans. The dialogue can get quite tacky.

Buffy Game Shines!

When I first got this game, I thought it would be non-stop action. However when I got into the game, I discovered that there is a thinking process involved. This game is extremely challenging, its not hard to kill people (that part is fun) but it is very hard to know where to go. You have to be very patient. The graphics are XBOX quality and the game is very immersive. The downfall is that it is easy to die and there are only two checkpoints per level so if you complete a hard part be sure to do it again. The vampires need some variety, there are two main types, "Brads" and "Dixie Chicks" who always say chick fight. They are pushovers but killing them is fun. There are also skeletons who are just annoying because they physically cant hurt you; they suck your blood and you dont lose any health. If you are in for a challenge, get this game.

... AMAZING

This game RULES!!! The graphics are fantastic. The action phenomanal...

Good adventure and lots of hidden secrets. The Master is tough but once conquered you actually feel like you have accomplished something.

I like that you can interrupt the movie because once you have seen it then you have seen it and all you really need is the action!

I cannot wait for the sequel!!!

GOES BEYOND MY EXPECTATIONS !!!

I've always been a big fan of the t.v.show since the start. The reason for getting an x-box is my obbsession with this cult following. The game has challenging stages, all characters from the show and follows events from seasons 1-3.The best feature is the fighting engine. You fight multiple vamps, demons and zombies.Mixing combos and special moves you get along the way is the key.Weapons include garden implements, pool cues and stakes.Watch Buffy go off on enemies when she picks up a shovel. Her main weapons are a crossbow and a supersoaker that can be used to torch enemies with holy water or fire.During gameplay,Buffy interacts with cast, mainly at the school library.I'd love to see a sequel, covering seasons 4-6.The only downfall is the lack of attention to Willow's face. She rocks! The rest of the cast looks good though. You get alot, considering this game is now thirty bucks.

LOVED the game

It was a very addictive game, the only one that i have ever rented and fineshed in the same weekend. I loved staking the vampires, and kicking them around. There are a few things i wish were different though. I wish you could play as different characters, at laeast for some portion of the game (i would live to play as spike or angel). Also there should have been a built in multiplayer level, there is a way to multi play with a code, but it is really hard for player 2 to see what he is doing because of the camera angles. This game is sure to delight any fan of the show, and maybe even some who arnt fans.

vamp slaying is extatic!

(I am an average gamer so keep that in mind when reading this review.)
For Buffy fans this game is a MUST, but for gamers in general it is above average with great hack and slash satisfaction. The graphics are impressive and the characters are developed well. (they due tend to repeat their lines but not to an intolerable extent.) There is excellent interaction with the environment, varieables in how to complete a level, and good replay value. Difficulty levels provide a challenge to those that are experienced gamers and for average players looking for a manageable challenge it is at a perfect attainability level. Flaw: There could be more adventure and less hack and slash (but this is coming from a roll play junkie and not a combat fanatic)
Overall there is no flaw in this game that would generate an unsatisfied purchase!

Fun for fans and non-fans of the show alike

It should be noted that Buffy The Vampire Slayer, the game based on the wildly successful TV series of the same name, is definitely not a hack-and-slash. Simply mashing buttons won't get you very far in the game, and you won't want to be mashing buttons.

The wonderful thing about Buffy is that there are so many ways to kill your enemies. From pointy sticks sticking out from the wall or exploding barrels, the game succeeds in not becoming too repetitive, as in kick kick, punch punch, stake in the heart. Once you discover the many ways of slaying the vampires, you'll want to pause and look around for the different hazards you can throw your unfortunate enemies into.

The controls are very easy to learn, with a minor gripe being that the control to open doors or to pick up and activate objects is the same button used to drive whatever weapon in your hand through the vampire.

It should also be noted that you won't just be toting a stake. At different points in the game, you'll find spears, shovels, brooms and other assorted goodies that add variety, a common theme in the game.

The graphics are standard fare, there's nothing that special to speak of in the game, except for the character models, which look quite good. It looks as good as any other platform action game would, and it's hard to complain about it. The environments are somewhat interactive, but can get bland after awhile.

The voice acting might be a big draw here for some people. Sarah Michelle Gellar is the only main character who didn't lend their voice to the game, as the voices of Xander, Angel, Spike, Giles, Cordelia and Willow are all here. The actress replacing Buffy's voice is a very close match to the real thing. Unfortunately, during the game you will tire of her repetitive sayings, such as "Oh, go kiss daylight." Also, the vampires themselves will get very repetitive with their words, though they begin to vary as you advance further in the game.

The camera is a little spotty in some parts, such as enclosed rooms at the end of a hallway. However, the camera tries its best to give you the entire view.

All in all, Buffy The Vampire Slayer is definitely worth a rental, and is good for some wholesome single-player fun. Certainly not a classic for years to come, but definitely a worthy game for the TV series.

This is by far a much better game than chaos bleeds. I have heard that the collective is working on a few new projects. I really hope one of them is a true sequal to Buffy. Buy this game it is worth every penny!!!

Addicting and Fun!

First things first... this game is outstandingly better than MANY games i have played in my life. I bought an XBox just to play this game. Its sad that they no longer make this game, it is a masterpiece in my opinion. The game starts out like many other games, you are one person against many. That one person is Buffy The Vampire Slayer. The games begins with you speaking with Giles (her watcher) outside a Spanish Courtyard and its a 'training-like' scenraio preparing you for the actual game you are about to play. There are a few puzzles you have to figure out, but they are simple, there are a few vampires you have to stake and dust, and you learn certain moves and combination with punching and kicking. Then the real fun begins....
You start off visting Sunnydale High, from there you go to The Bronze and then to a few back alleys, Sunnydale Cemetary (You visit this place many times) Angels Mansion, the Sunnydale Shipping and Docking Harbor, the Local Foundry, back to the High School again. You even get transported by The Master to a 'dreamers realm' where you face some of the toughest challenges i think the game has. But the good thing about this game is that it is not one of those IMPOSSIBLE HARD TO BEAT games. It has its difficult moments and be a challenge, but it can be beat.
I think that the graphics in this game are very life-like and the characters voices are the actual actors from the show (except buffys). When Buffy is fighting a Vampire and she stakes them, the stake comes out the other side of the vampire and as it turns to dust and the vampire screams, bones come crashing to the ground and then it fades away, exactly like in the show. Also there are many weapons that Buffy can pick up along the way and use against her enemies. You find crossbow bolts, rakes, shovels, baseball bats, holy water vials, sledgehamers, and bottles of hellfire. Also she has bottles of elixers that she can carry with her along the way that help replinses her energy. You can also combine some of you weapons together to make them stronger... for instance, if you have crossbow bolts and a holy water vial, you can combine them and have 3 blessed bolts to fire at enemies and watch them go up in smoke. WICKED COOL!! Sometimes, if you are low on weapons, you will come across areas where there is sunlight and you can grab vamps and toss them in the sun and they will go up in dust quick.
You can also save students/teachers/cilivians wandering the school halls or out in the city and they will give you elixers or other things to help you along the way, however some of them you cant save, no matter how hard you try. But save the ones you can for a prize.
Also be aware that certain weapons work better on enemies than other weapons do... for example, if you are fighting zombies dont try staking them, it doesnt phase them! Try using crossbow bolts that have been dipped in hellfire. That really lights them up!
The story line in this game is AMAZING and would have made a GREAT movie. The story is set somewhere in the begining to middle of the 3rd season of Buffy, before Cordelia and Angel left the show.
All in all this game is ACTION packed and full of funny one-liners from the characters and will leave you laughing sometimes so hard it will be hard to fight the vamps on the screen. If you arent even a Buffy fan, this is a great game if you like beat'em up, save the world type games! Great Family Fun!
