Buffy the Vampire Slayer hits the X-Box in a BIG way! ! !

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 4 / 4

Buffy the Vampire Slayer for the X-Box is without a doubt one of the best games to debut on the X-Box this year! It may seems a little dated, but the game follows on from where Season 3 left off. The game is played from a third-person persective and your goal is basically to rid Sunnydale of as many vampires as possible. You can achieve this by collecting weapons throughout the game - these include stakes (obviously), shovels and rakes. The graphics are also brilliant for a game like this and are sure to give the X-Box the credibility it rightly deserves.

The game is set in Sunnydale, California and fans will be pleased to hear that most of the locations seen on screen in the TV series are also on here. Places such as Sunnydale High School's libary and other places of the school, including the Bronze and Buffy's house are included in this brilliant game. Perhaps even more brilliant is the addition of characters from the show. Willow, Giles and Angel are featured in the game and will be available to give Buffy hints about how to fight better and be more successful in your slaying. Alyson Hannigan (Willow), Anthony Stewart Head (Giles) and David Boreanaz (Angel) lent their voices to the characters in the game which makes it more realistic. Sarah Michelle Gellar however, hasn't lent her voice to the production of this fantastic game - which is a crying shame as she is the main character and we would love to hear her when kicking vampire-ass! The graphics are absolutely phenomenal, too! Buffy herself looks very life-like with instantly recognisable features and some scarily realistic motion-capture animation. Killing a vampire is also a fantastic sight to see. With the recent advent of intricate and complex computer game graphics, Electronic Arts (makers of the game) have the ability to make the vampire-turning-to-dust process look identical as it does in the show!

OVERALL GRADE: 10/10

It looks like the makers of the game are not only trying to impress fans of the show, but to make an impression on people who don't watch the show (which in turn will generate more publicity and millions more viewers). All in all, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of the must-have X-Box games of the year so far! Buy this now from Amazon.com!

WOW! A dream come true...

I'm a do-or-die Buffy fan - have every single episode on VHS, as have seen each of them a minimum of 5 times. I'm a little obsessed... :)

Needless to say, I've been watching the development of this game for two+ years with drooling anticiaption. A while back when it was announced the game was only coming to XBOX, I was crushed - poor college student :( so the thought of spending three bills on a new system was pretty much out of the question.

However, a few weeks ago, now that the XBOX has been reduced in price, I gave in and spent some cash to buy the system and Buffy, which I figured I'd dump on eBay when I finished (saving the box and manuals and such).

Boy, will that not be happening!!! Buffy is the most incredible video game I've ever played - no question. Mario Sunshine can kiss Buffy's tight leather-clad rear.

The graphics are incredible - the shots inside the library are so close it's creepy. My 35" TV is in another state at the moment so I've had to play on a 13" monitor, and I'm dying to see it on the big screen. The colors are vivid - Buffy's red leather pants are the best. The characters are redered well; the only complaint I have is that the lip-sync is slightly off, but not nearly as bad as I've seen it (like Bridge Commander on PC).

The real beauty in the game is the control though - absolutely amazing. The engine (aptly named "Slayer") is sure to be used in many other games in the future. Words like "multi" and "combo" when it applies to attacks usually scares me - I just want to smash buttons, not memorize sequences of keys. Buffy makes it so easy I was doing combos in no time without even opening the in-game slayer guide book (on the items screen).

The details in gameplay are what make this game special - for instance, see that sign post in the ground? Pick up the vamp and throw him onto it and POOF! he's dusted. Need a stake? Smash the chair next to you and pick up one of the splintered pieces. The designers really know Buffy - there are references to specific episodes throughout; at one point early in the game Willow accidentally mentions going "behind the stacks" with Xander, and the plot involving Spike and Dru fits perfectly within the storyline of the early part of Season 3.

The voice acting is beyond excellent - since all of our favorite characters are played by the same actors on the show (even Cordellia, who's now on ANGEL). As a die-hard Buffy fan, I was really worried when I heard that they were all voiced by the original actors - except for SMG (Buffy). However, the sound-alike is almost perfect - truly. I work in music and video production, and have a really keen ear for this stuff (like picking out that SMG does one of the "lifetime...television for women" voice overs during the Golden Girls), and though at times I could tell it wasn't SMG, the vast majority of it was utterly convincing. Less obsessed fans (even those who watch the show regularly) would probably never notice.

For a Buffy fan, there is no reason in the world not to buy the game - everyone is there, including Drusilla (which I didn't know before getting the game). It's even worth getting an XBOX for - and I wouldn't say that lightly. If you aren't a fan, you will be after you see this game - the cut scenes and dialogue are just as good as the television show, which is saying A LOT. And the gameplay, as I said, allows the beginner to get right into the action, and hardcore gamers to really strech things.

I hate glowing reviews, but this time it's for real and this game worth every penny. Let's hope there is another game coming soon - BtVS : The Initiative anyone?

For the ultimate buffy fanatic

Originally I just bought this game because I'm a huge fan of the show, but in playing it for hours I found that this has got to be my favorite game by far. The moves are just like Buffy's, and the humor that is so well known in the show appears in the game as well with the dialog between characters and monsters alike. The only thing that disappointed me was that all of the voices were the original characters but Buffy's. The graphics in this game were awesome, and the game itself was challanging. I couldn't stop playing.

Buffy Kicks Butt!

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is well worth the purchase whether you are a fan of the television series or not. The graphics on the X-Box game system are outstanding and this game takes full advantage of the system capabilities. The game is centered around the first two seasons of the show, but again, you don't have to be a fan of the series to appreciate the game, it just adds to the experience. All of the main characters make an appearance and are voiced by the actual actors with the exception of Buffy...but the voice acting is so dead-on that you will barely even notice. The game is action-based but has some puzzle solving thrown in for good measure, but don't worry, these puzzles actually seem tied into the game unlike the typical action based games (the Resident Evil series comes to mind). The game is fast-paced and pure entertainment as you hone your skills as a Slayer and kick some serious vampire butt. Don't even bother with the rental because you will either keep on renting it or end up paying so many late fees it wont be worth it. For the price of this game, you can't afford not to buy it. Highly recommended!

I Got a Review Copy. IT SLAYS!! (in a good way)

I got a copy in the mail last Thursday, Aug. 15. I've just finished the first cemetery level after going through Sunnydale High and the Bronze. Short review: It's amazing. The graphics are incredible. The voice acting is great -- you'd never know the lead voice actress isn't Sarah Michelle Gellar. And the rest of the voices ARE the original cast. And the dialogue is on par with the show (Sample line: When a female vampire kills you, she says, "I always wanted to know what it was like to do it with a girl. Now I know what all the hype was about.") So far the story is great, too. It's like getting a "Lost" classic episode from Season 3. So far the plot goes like this: Dru has been kidnapped by some powerful demon force and Spike is being forced into doing its bidding, which is to resurrect and rebuild the Master's cult. Probably in an effort to revive the Master since he pops up on every "Loading" screen. As for gameplay, it is loads of fun. The stake is your primary weapon but you can also use a crossbow for distance sniping and there are lots of sharp jagged wooden planks ("Oooh! Pointy!") and convenient fires or explosive chemicals drums. I just received the watergun from Xander and haven't been able to give it a try yet but I am jonesing for it. It will shoot holy water or hellfire. You can also combine the holy water with elixirs for full power-ups or combine holy water or hellfire with crossfire bolts to make super arrows. For the most part, the gameplay is great. The controls aren't hard. Very responsive. Simple combos that aren't bewildering for those of us who weren't Mortal Kombat fans. You get new combos from Giles the farther along you go. You pick up crystals along the way to bring to Willow and she will charge them up to give you more health and Slayer capacity. So far, the cemetery level was my favorite. There is a big spectre who looms over the cemetery shooting out "lightning" that resurrects zombie skeletons everywhere. Plus there are the vamps to contend with. The enemy AI isn't too hard but not too easy either. (Hint for the railyard battle with Spike behind the Bronze: Wait for him to jump and hit him in mid-air.) But I was impressed with the fact that the "gardener" vampire in the cemetery level will pick up items like shovels if you drop them and will use them against you. Smart monster. Oh, and one helpful hint that would have helped me because I was stuck forever on this part: When you get to the long hallway at the end of the Bronze level that has the invincible vampire with the chestplate on, don't fight him. Run to one end of the hallway and find a door you'll be able to flee through. ...

Buffy is a Classic, Even For Non-Fans of the show!!

I bought an Xbox just because of Buffy, I first got Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds from a very friend of mine :), anyway, I was playing Chaos Bleeds and I found it veryyyyy good, easy.. and some flaws as well... anyway, when I got my copy of Buffy The Vampire Slayer (I bought it here) I was thrilled, first of all, the graphics are a bit, just a bit! better than Chaos Bleeds, the Cut-Scenes are BETTER than the game in Chaos Bleeds,oh.. and the game isnt that cheap like Chaos Bleeds...

Gameplay 9/10: For the most part of the game you spend kicking and punching vampires, zombies and other kind of undead in your quest to save the world and to know whats going on, im a fan of the show and I loved the gameplay! you can have alot of weapons, including Stakes, crossbows, mops, brooms, and a water gun filled with hellfire and holy water which is good to dust vampires and other kind of stuffs. The control here are sooooooooo simple, you use X to punch and A to Kick if you combine this button, you can release good combos against your enemies (While holding the last button the game will change in slow motion for like 5 seconds, buffy will glow purple, and she will unleash a combo with more damage to the enemy) the Y is the use button of the game, you can stake (If you have a weapon), open doors, take items, etc. if the B button you Jump, with the L shoulder button you can look in a first person mode! this is useful since if you are low in health, you would want to look into an area first! the R shoulder button is to target and enemy, (you can also enter a first person mode with the crossbow when you are equipped with it, this game is a must!) I found that in Chaos Bleeds the vampires are wayyyyy to easy to kill, well here... you have difficulty, Easy, normal and hard! you can decapitate vampires with shovels and the reaper blade too, burn with holy or hell fire, you can stake em (sighs) and there are manyyy ways to dispatch your enemy, dont have stakes?? throw your vampiric foe to daylight (In some levels, like Angel's Mansion) want to dispatch your enemy quickly?? if there is a table turned over with a sharp leg, you can toss it there and it dusts! an interesting thing about this game is that, if your bar is depleted you dont die actually, your enemy needs to perform a killing attack (Such as biting your neck, or stomp it, fire.. and stuffs like that) and buffy dies, same apply to the enemies, you need to stake (You can also throw your stake, and if you catch your enemy off-guard it will dust him/her instantly without you having to deplete his/her energy bar) or burn, decapitate them! wayyyy too funny. The reason that I gave it a 9 was because sometimes the camera angles will get you in trouble, but is not a big deal and the fact that buffy cannot swim, rofl.

Sound (Music) 9/10: The sound in this game is veryyy detailed, you can hear buffy breathing, which is hilarious, when she is walking down a hallway (sighs) when some of the vampires growl (Ripped straight from the show) and many many other things, the voice acting is the better than i thought, Everybody plays their RL counterpart except for Buffy, but the girl in replacement sounds a lot like SMG! which is good, thats why I gave this a 9.. Also the music, when you are walking, you can hear a spooking music playing on the background, and when you are fighting with some vamps, you can hear some excelent tunes, is like tecno or something like that but is different than the music in chaos bleeds, is not that kind of music with the theme (u are going to die!! no time to escape) like in chaos bleeds, so is a good adiction to this game (the themes in chaos bleeds sounded better but...)... Also.. Buffy has some witty comments to says to the enemies (Like in the show) but after a little while it gets veryyyyy repetitive, funny, but repetitive.. it doesnt bother me really, but couldnt they just added more??

Story 10/10: This is a Beat em up action game for the xbox see?? but it has an incredible story! the actual writers from the show wrote this one, involving the master coming back, and some of other unfamiliar foes, (The game is placed somewhere in season 3) they are trying to resurect The Master, which it occurs, but in a phantom form, so he searchs for a body, Angel.. then Angel is posessed by the master, and you need to fight him to weaken the master while willow and the others perfoms a ritual to get the master out of angel's body so buffy wouldnt have to kill him... and then the rest you will find it yourself, this is a good story, you feel like you are inside an episode of the show :), there are bad moments (Such as angel posessed) and good moments with witty and funny comments and stuffs :).

Graphics 8.5/10: This game is a master piece, it success in not being repetitive! even you get to go to the library between some level and have an actual conversation with the scooby gang!! is more like an scooby reunion, nothing like Chaos Bleeds, you need to talk to them the way you want and stuff, they give you tips, and it futhers the story of the game, xander sometimes will give you weapons, willow will increase your power and health bar if you give her the crystals.. and giles will give you new combos and a cool weapon later on the game with the name "Reaper Blade"! cordelia will just.. speaks.. lol, but anyway she is funny. another interesting thing about this game is that, buffy will change her emotions, and a big huge difference from chaos bleeds, is that the charater model will actually move the lips when buffy makes a witty comment! wayyy too detailed!

All in all... Buffy The Vampire Slayer is one (or was) cause the game was made in 2002, one of the best action beat em up game for the xbox, its a classic, and non-fan of the show can get into the story going to the extra menu and choosing buffy history 101, it explain everything about buffy and the concept of the game, there are some codes that you can unlock an arena mode, and you can even play multiplayer inside it!! the first control being buffy and the other ones controls the enemies (even bosses) :), you can also do that in the story mode, cause the arena mode has a bug and it lets you to do the same in the game (Nope, it will not affect your game disc or gameplay), fans of the show they need to have this game! is a classic, and again.. most of the non-fans should pick this up, dont ignore this game cause it has Buffy's name.. this is a good action game, and a classic, way better than Spiderman.

Even BETTER than I had thought it would be!

...

The first 2 minutes of the game where some of the best that I've seen in a long time. I was immediately drawn in with excitement. I was disappointed that the levels seemed so dark and at one point having to jump from ledge to ledge I fell a few times due to the darkness. At least that's what happened until, silly me, I paused the game to get up for a minute and noticed in the options a "brightness" setting! I wanted to go back and restart the game just to see what I may have missed in the dark!

The controls have a little bit of a learning curve. I found myself hitting the kick button when I wanted to jump which caused me to die a few times. (Guess I was use to Halo jumping with the "A" button) I've never been that good at "combo" fighting moves either so I tend to just stick to the easier ones rather than having to hit a whole combination of things. Movement and fighting is very much like Spider-Man for the Xbox.

Many things are "breakable" in the game and can be used as weapons. I also found myself forgetting at times that SUN LIGHT kills vampires so I spent too much time fighting a few of the enemies when all I had to do was break a window or the like.

All in all, it's a great game. There are many honest scares in the game. I don't even care that Sarah Michelle Geller hasn't lent her voice to the game (like the other actors did... read ALL) because whoever did Buffy's voice sounds almost identical to Miss Geller.

If you don't like the show you would still appreciate the game for its unique use of weapons and tactics. If you do like the show even the slightest... you must buy this game.

...

A big surprise

My Fiancee purchased this game for herself, and I wasn't interested in it. After watching her play for about 15 minutes I started wanting to play it myself. the graphics are pretty good. The game play is very fun minus the usual camera angle problems associated with all third person games. Wether you are a fan of the TV show or not going around and staking vampires on this game is alot of fun. I found that being able to use the crossbow in sniper mode was great shoot the vampire in the heart from long distance and you wont have to fight close.

Great game and now even better deal at $30!!!

For starters, I was a little surprised that Buffy dropped to $30 so soon after release, that usually happens only to the overhyped games that "blow"...This is definately not the case with BTVS.
I bought it full priced on its release date and have gotten a lot of enjoyment out of playing it and still do (I'm currently really stuck in the "dreamlands") ... The most important point I want to make is that there is enough to this game that I haven't gotten bored and given up on it like I've done with certain other female action/adventure based games that resemble BTVS only in so far as they both have females who "Kick and Climb"...
BTVS has a secret 2-player arena mode that can be found at most gamecheat websites, as well as the not-so-secret option to go back to any level previously played if you just feel like kicking some vampire butt or playing a little "What would happen if .."
I recommend BTVS to anyone who can appreciate the humor of the series/genre.

An incredible game

This is one of the best video games I have ever played. Everyone who owns an xbox must play this game, whether you're a fan of the show or not. If you're a Buffy fan (like me), you will love this game, which plays like an extended episode. The fighting scenes are great, especially when you let loose with the Slayer Power and give some demon scum the multiple quick kicks in mid-air or decapitate some vampire and vanquish him to his personal corner of Hell.
The camera angles can be frustrating at times, and I would have liked to hear Sarah Michelle Gellar voicing Buffy (why was she the only actor/actress who didn't lend her voice to the game?), but those are my only negative comments. Great action scenes, great effects, great story. I played it on Normal (the middle difficulty setting), and it was sufficiently hard - but not impossible - to beat, so I definitely got my money's worth.
This is the way all video games should look and play. If you like action games, you owe it to yourself to pick this game up. Here's hoping a sequel is in the works.
