SWG was the greatest MMORPG I had ever played at first, but not so any more. First, The creators of the game Ignored what the Public wanted. Then, when they showed us what they were planning to do to the game, they ignored the public outcry. And finnaly, when they forced it upon us, they ignored and forcefully suppressed the screams of horror. The Creators of the game have destroyed the features that made SWG stand out and be special and replaced them with a nonfunctional unplayable combat system. Don't buy this game, you'll be wasting your money.
Only buy this product if you are a glutten for punishment

I've played, enjoyed, and loved this game since fall of 2003, but Sony Online Entertainment has stripped this game of everything that once made it unique, and has just changed this game into an EverQuest clone. On top of that, their handling of upset customers has been the worst example of public relations I have ever seen. From anybody. The only way I would ever recomend this game to anybody, is if I knew they were feeling down about not being treated poorly enough.
I will never do business with Sony Online Entertainment again.
stay away from Star wars galaxies.

I would not suggest this game to anyone. Go buy world of warcraft if you want to play a mmorpg, because star wars galaxies has become World of Warcraft, except with bugs and imbalances that make the game unplayable. i have played swg for 2 years now, done about everything there is to do, have a finished jedi character, and i cancled my account yesterday in disgust. I have never felt so ignored and unappreciated as a customer as i have the last month with Sony online entertainment.
Bottom line: If you are looking for a broken game with horrid customer service and developer communication, Swg is for you.
Another Lie from SOE to the few who stayed with the game

great so I keep one account active to give them a chance to see if they will keep their word and fix the game promptly ( they still to date have not fixed one player issue bug). The players were promised that the only way to get a certain in game item was to preorder the new expansion. Well 1 hr before it goes live ( when you can no longe cancel trhe preorder) they announce that anyone who buys the new pack get the mount (the thing promised to pre-orders only) AND the speeder ( the thing promised to those who buy the total experience). So now instead of the few who stuck it out being rewarded we again get lied to by SOE.
You would think after deleted the 1000's of posts on their own forums to try to quiet the unrest, the 1000's of ban's on their own players for trying to report the 100's of GAME BREAKING bugs, and the public outcry seen on MANY respected game forums they would learn to tell the truth for once in concerns to the CU. Nope.
ANy way dont waste your money most players have abandoned this game in numbers so high that SOE president has come into the forums to try to save what is left.
Crafters is still broken, no reason to be one with the items you craft are not needed ( armor makes zero difference , weapons are all generic and do same damage no mater who makes them) Entertainers have fled in droves because a novice can do the exact same thing a master can. Combat has been dumbed down to the point that if you look away from your action bar you will miss your attack for that round and die. Its simply press the same button over and over since all the attacks do the same damage ( our best and worst do exactly the same). Players are posting here how great it is then head straight to the game forums and complain about how no one is left to play with.
The systems was poorly done , it is in an early beta stage (and im being nice here since i liked teh CU at one point) so expect to pay for teh next 2 years of game time to be a beta tester that they will 100% ignore ( ost a bug and complain get banned).
1000's of bugs were reported in the few days of testing allowed not one was fixed before it went live.
A last big concern is the game is LIVE NOW but the developers ADMIT that seeveral planets play areas are NOT CODED UP TO THE NEW SYSTEM YET and refuse to give a time line on when they ever will be.
Read thru all the posts here you will find that april 25th there are less than 20 good job post that have zero substance as to why , but 100's of ones that explain exact problems much better than i ever could.
Stay away play a game that is completed and worth your time.
The new CU upgrade (upgrade?) has destroyed a great game

i have played swg now since the original beta 3 phase of the game, and have seen it go through many changes, the last one, however, has killed the game off, by changing the game from skill based, to level based, (and also by almost totally destroying the crafting community in the process) i would advise anyone contemplating buying, to wait, and see if they fix the system, in its present form, it is unplayable. it wouldnt surprise me if the game closes in the next 3-4 months. before buying check the game forums it could save you a lot of money, and heartache.

I played this game for over a year and I was truely addicted. Heck my wife one time accused me of loving the game more than her. Well since the CU I have canceled my account and the expansion I pre-ordered. One post said the "whiners" were in the minority, well I read over a hundred post in this game review and counted 4 that actually like the game now. I'm not a genius but that's in the 96% range that do not like the game now and feel so strongly about it that they had to come in here and express it. One post said SOE were deleting post they didn't like, well I can verify that. I went to reply on an anti-cu post in the SWG forums and the post got deleted before I could reply. In my year I have seen SOE constantly ignore the customers and this was just the straw that broke the camels back. The only person I know that is glad the CU was pushed out is my wife (and she don't play).
save your time.

Don't buy this disgrace of a game, only SOE would try to change the game so much, years out of its beta testing period, its now the worst mmorpg on the market. SOE have the worst customer service ever! SOE don't care if they mess the game up there so rich they can change the game years out of beta n not care what the customer thinks and now they've ruined it.
Save your time and money do not buy this awful game the reviews say it all. Apart from Reviewer: Robert (Texas) who is probably a Star wars galaxies DEV "however the Great Development team is working with players" probably a dev? hes deffently one.

The recent "Combat Upgrade" has totally ruined the game, taking out much of the enjoyment of the game, let alone destroying the accomplishments of most veteran players.
I have cancelled my subscription, and going to check out World of Warcraft.
Save your money.

Here are a few bits of information you might need to know about this MMORPG before purchasing.
aka "What your mother never told you about MMORPGs"
Let me begin by saying I'm neither promoting nor condemning the recent Combat Upgrade. Personally, it caused me to cancel all of my accounts and uninstall the software. Yet some gamers seem to like the new system, and to each their own.
However, there are some things about this particular MMORPG that differ from others on the market, and there are some things I wish someone would have explained before I began playing.
So here I am to explain those things for potential customers who are either not at all familiar with how other MMORPGs operate in comparison to SWG:AED, or who know how other MMORPGs work, and may be caught off guard by the differences in this system.
1) First, a common sense warning that the game guide listed by Amazon for SWG:AED is no longer of any use for how to survive combat, any special abilities granted to any character professions, armor, weapons, or any profession-specific item or play-style issues.
Maps and such--plus some older 'quest' type content will still be valid and helpful. Just don't assume that any skill-specific information in the guide is still viable, since these things have all recently been revamped and bear little, if any, resemblence to the game concept at the time of this guide's release.
2) In SWG, there are multiple servers, as with most MMORPGs. With most other MMORPGs, it is possible to have more than one character on the same server with only one user account, and only one set of software.
However, with one set of SWG software, you are only granted one character slot per game server. (One exception: if your character becomes a jedi, you are automatically granted a second character on that user account, same server). It is, however, possible to create a character on up to eight DIFFERENT servers with one subscriber account/set of software.
In SWG, the only way to create more than one character on the same server is to purchase another set of software (with its own unique keycode) plus subscribe an additional account--and pay another subscription fee. So if you want two characters on the same server, you need two sets of software and two subscription accounts. For every character you add, you need subsequent sets of software (keycodes) and more subscriptions.
And yes, there are people who've had 10 characters (quite possibly more) on one server, which means they've purchased 10 sets of software and pay 10x the subscription amount per month.
3) Expansions such as Jump To Lightspeed and the upcoming Return of the Wookie are additional content not available to you unless you buy the software and register it with an existing SWG:AED account.
And the software is only applicable to one account--For every SWG:AED software package (or more specifically, the AED keycode) you put into use, you must also purchase and register a JTL a/o ROTW keycode in order to gain access to that content.
You cannot apply a single expansion keycode to more than one account.
What that means is, if you bought two sets of SWG:AEG and run both accounts on the same server, you will only have access to the expanded content on the account you registered the expansion with. The character on your other/second account will not have access to that content unless you buy another set of expansion software and register the keycodes with your second account.
On the other hand, say you have only one account, with characters on server A and server B. With an expansion registered to that single account, the expanded content would be available to you on both server A and server B.
(The reason for this is that Lucas Arts puts out the software, SOE provides and maintains the servers and engine. So LA would be deprived subsequent sales if all expansions applied to all your accounts)
4) As of April 27, 2005, the ingame help system is basically defunct--tied to the old system before the combat upgrade. I would assume SOE will upgrade the 'holocron' (accessible in game by ctrl+h) before their projected crush of new players in the wake of Episode III.
But as of right now, your best chance of learning how to play the game resides in the existing playerbase and forums. Not that anyone really knows how to play right now, with fixes and patches coming in fast and furious for the foreseeable future and changing this Combat Upgrade still further, yet your fellow gamers are still your best bet.
5) Currently, there are at least 2 different user interfaces (keymap/movement platforms) available to users. Any new accounts registered now will have the EQ2 style interface set as default.
However, it is possible to change this interface to the originally designed SWG style by accessing the Options menu in-game (ctrl+O) and finding the interface pulldown menu. (Sorry, can't recall which tab it's under atm). The old system, while somewhat confusing to incoming players from other MMORPGs, is often much easier to navigate than EQ2 style once you master the alt key switch between mouse and world mode.
Rather like the difference between automatic and manual transmission, in my opinion. Most people prefer one or the other, and luckily, both are available in this particular game.
6) I understand this game will be repackaged soon, hopefully so that its userguide reflects the new system enforced with the Combat Upgrade. (and will spare you untold hours of update downloading) So please do be mindful of which version you purchase--the collectors edition available on Amazon right now (as of May 5) will reflect the old system, and therefore its actual nuts and bolts will not be the same as what's necessary to play the game on the live servers now--which means massive update downloads, and a user guide rife with no-longer-valid info.
If you buy used, make certain what you're getting.
7) While we're on the subject of downloading updates, if you are on dial-up, I can't in all good conscience, recommend this product. Patches and new publishes are frequent, and while they've just installed something or other to minimize the time you spend downloading, even on cable it can take up to 45 minutes to download new publishes at off peak hours.
And finally...
8) Pay extra-close attention to requirements for this game. SP2, spyware and antiviral software can make this game virtually unplayable under not-so-unusual circumstances. Of special concern are your RAM, video card and drivers. While SWG will only use a set amount of RAM, chances are your PC hogs up more than you need to have available, and this can cause some unholy lag and framerate stutter. Plus, only certain versions of DirectX (and NVIDIA cards/drivers in particular) are compatable with the SWG requirements, and incompatability seems to create more trouble with this game than most. Especially with the JTL expansion.
If you're in doubt, visit SOE's SWG technical support forum before rushing out to upgrade the wrong thing. They have some very helpful FAQ's and known issue threads, also some support staff on that board who can get you past most game-breaking issues.
In closing, I'd like to reiterate what others have said before, that the reviews posted pre-Combat Upgrade (April 27th, 2005) might as well not pertain to the product available to you now. They've gone from a unique skill-based system to a level based system, and it is quite literally a new game. SOE is suffering unprecedented public relations fallout from this upgrade, and while certain individuals sound a bit hysterical, even the most level-headed veteran of SWG can say that their outrage over the bait-and-switch that's just occured is not unfounded.
In case you missed it, the true crux of the matter is that SOE has just replaced one buggy (some would say completely broken, some would say much-loved) game engine with a second, undeniably broken engine. No one, not even the sitting president of SOE is denying the new system is ridden with innumerable, often game-breaking bugs. There was no alpha testing, a couple weeks of open beta testing, and an early, unannounced upgrade publish to beat the release of Episode III and the ROTWookie expansion. They did so, knowing full well that the upgrade was not ready to hit live.
Thus, some people are a bit... disgruntled. Some because they liked the old system and didn't want it to be replaced, some because the upgrade was pushed live before it was sufficiently de-bugged. Pick your poison on that one.
So, caveat emptor. Right now, this game does indeed have a beta running on the live servers. Might want to give it a few months to stabilize before trying this product.
Good luck.

No one liked it, no one wanted it... But they forced it on us anyway.
I used to love this game but the recent combat "upgrade" (DOWNgrade) just killed all interest in it. I still have two months left but i can't even bring myself to click on the icon, now.
I was a Master armorsmith, yet they removed all need for armor. People can solo anything they want that is their level or below *unarmored* and anything higher than their level all they have to do is group up. My main character is now *useless*.
If you like crafting, find another game. This one's dead.
And don't even get me started on combat. I was hardly the uber l337 combatant, but i was ok. I could fight *a lot of stuff* with reasonable chance of success, still allowing for chance of failure (I did tend to take on more than i could chew and die a lot). Now, I run from butterflys. Seriously BUTTERFLIES! I can't imagine being a new player in this game now.
Look elsewhere... World of Warcraft, City of Heroes, Matrix online, just *whatever you do* skip this one.
