`Star Trek' is one of the largest syndicated franchises in history. With 5 series, nine movies, millions of fans and billions of dollars worth of merchandise, this show is practically immortal: it's not going to cease production for a very long time. Though `Star Trek' hit television by storm, this wasn't the case with computers. Despite more than 10 `Trek' games, none of them truly captured the essence of the show. Also, the combat was mainly comprised of fighter-type vessels: not `Star Trek' at all.

Suddenly, though, in late 1999, the acclaimed PC-game developer Larry Holland and his company `Totally Games' began a project that would ultimately result in not only the best Star Trek game ever, but also the best game period.

Since I have been following this game for nearly 3 years, you can bet I had extremely high expectations, but when I loaded up the game I was so impressed and awed that my next 8 hours were devoted solely to experiencing the magic that `Bridge Commander' is brimming with. With a 700-page storyline written by the famous writer Dorothy Fontana, awesome graphics, wonderful sounds and music, over 15 ships, 6 races, amazingly authentic bridges, a new race and hundreds of other fantastic features, `Bridge Commander' is the most immersing and dazzling game I have ever played. This piece of heaven went way beyond my expectations!

Words can't do justice what both Trekkies, and non-Trekkies feel like as they watch their ship, the USS Dauntless, glide smoothly out of drydock in the first mission! You have your own crew who you can talk to and get to even meet Picard and Data! Almost everything in `Bridge Commander' was taken out from the Paramount archives so you can bet that this game is as authentic as it will ever get! Voice control is optional, as is the ability to construct your very own ships from the SDK which will be released soon!

One sentiment that truly describes this masterpiece is: WOW! If you haven't bought `Bridge Commander' yet, download the demo to see if you like it and if you do, run down to your local pc-gaming store and purchase...ecstasy! I'm an avid gamer and have over 50 pc games: `Unreal', `Wolfenstein', `The Sims', `Medal of Honour: Allied Assault' and tons of others but `Bridge Commander' beats them all by a mile! I simply can't say enough about this game!

Great Star Trek Game

Its is one of the best Real Time Stategy (RTS) games out there, even if you're not a star trek fan. The graphics are good but the 3D view can get confusing. Unlike Age of Empires or Empire Earth, there are no ages, and there are only a few stations where you can build ships. There are also only 6 species, but each has there own unique ships. The campains take a while if you're not an experienced RTS gamer, but the instant action is also very exciting.
On the map, there are dilithium moons to mine, different planets to colonize, asteroid fields to block your way, and nebulas that can either heal, or desroy your ship.
Another difference from Age of Empires is that when your ship is damaged, it wont function as well, unlike when your knight is injured, he will continue to inflict the same amount of damage. There are different systems that can be damaged e.g. weapons, engines, crew.
If you decide to buy this game, I hope you have a good time with it, I shure did!

The graphics on this game are great and the progression is nice also. The game flows very well and truly makes you think. I am not an avid "trekker" but I enjoy the shows and movies and this game definitely met my expectations. Yes, the lip synching is bad and you can only save at certain points but that is truly nitpicking. A great buy!

More than Point & Shoot

You can get blown up every time by just letting your weapons officer do all the work. It's an intense game of strategy. Sometimes they make it easy for you; sometimes it's a try again and again challenge. Some ships can only be defeated by targeting certain subsystems. Sometimes you just flat have to take the helm and fly the Sovereign yourself. At times you can only defeat a fleet of bad guys by ganging up your Allies against one ship. At other times, keeping your allies apart is the only way to avoid suicide. Add to that the delicate balance of powering your own ship's systems, maneuvering between deadly orbiting satelites, and trying not to blow up your own badly-behaved Klingon friends, and you've got a game.

The only minuses to this game are the heavy video card requirements, which can bump you right out of the game if you're trying to max out limited resources, and the carefully controlled script. After playing a few times, I'd just love to blow the Cardassian Matan out of the sky when we first bump into him, but that would just ruin episodes 5-8, wouldn't it? So he escapes in the nick of time. And Ensegn Lomar is very unreliable when it comes to getting you to a ship under attack in time or avoiding Cardassian listening posts. Just take the helm.

A Superior Simulator

First let me state that the interface takes a bit of getting used to AND for you old time Star Fleet Battles people, there are some changes to the way things are managed ship-wise.

Okay, when I got used to everything by running the various tutorials (which were quite fun - you get to blow some things up), you finally can go and play against the computer.

The AI is pretty good. I haven't found very many ways to fool things. I found that when an opportunity presented itself, no matter how small, the computer would attempt to take advantage of it (i.e. firing on a weak or down shield, speeding up to gain range from your heavy weapons).

The graphics are excellent. It made me smile to see that they kept the 2-D look and feel of SFB, and being a fan of the miniatures I liked it that they kept the ship types and shapes also. With this game things hop and the stuff flies! The drones are very well done. Especially when running frigates you can actually see detail on them as they pass by!

Anyway, this game is really addictive and I have already burnt too many hours playing it. Well worth the money!

BTW, you do not need to buy any of the previous Starfleet computer products. This one has all that the previous ones have and more (I own all of them). So save your money for any future expansions of this product. Enjoy!
