THIS GAME IS NOTHING LIKE REAL TENNIS.THE PLAY STOPS AND FREEZES WHILE A PLAYER HITS A POWER SHOT.I LOVE TENNIS SO I WANT A GAME THAT IS LIKE REAL TENNIS.AND SO FAR ONLY SMASHCOURT TENNIS 2 IS LIKE REAL TENNIS.THIS GAME IS JUST ABOUT FLASH AND LOOKS AND NOT TRUE TO REAL TENNIS.THE STOPPING AND FREEZING AND THEN STARTING UP DURING PLAY IS JUST TOO MUCH FOR ANY TRUE TENNIS FAN TO TAKE.ALSO THE PLAYER IS SO FAR AWAY FROM A BALL AND CAN MAGICALLY GET TO IT WHILE POWERING UP YET AGAIN AND THE SCREEN STOPS PLAY YET AGAIN.AND THEN WHEN IT STARTS IP THE PLAYER IS ABLE TO GET TO THE BALL THAT IS SO FAR AWAY.AGAIN NOTHINGLIKE REAL TENNIS.
Not fun in the long run.

I returned Mario Tennis to the store for credit. I'm a big tennis fan, and I was hoping Mario Tennis on Gamecube would be a fun version of tennis that would capture the essence of tennis combined with the impossible fantasy occurences that can only happen in video games... sort of like how the SSX series fantasized snowboarding or the Tony Hawk series depicted skateboarding. I loved Mario Golf so I figured this should be equally well done.
Mario Tennis was not what I thought it would be. Sure enough, it was tennis, but the repetitive gameplay interruptions got old really fast and I knew of no way to turn them off. Basically, you have these super moves where the character engages in one of two canned animations (that take 3 to 4 seconds) to hit the ball in a spectacular fashion. These super moves are done about every three exchanges and it got to where I just wanted to play tennis without the stupid time-stopping animations interrupting the game every 15 seconds or so. It stopped being a game after awhile; very little skill is required to play this game. Those super moves were useless as the opponent can and will do an opposing super move to cancel your move out. Against the computer, you basically ended up exploiting the AI by volleying at the net and doing the same exact pattern to win or else you end up playing baseline to baseline indefinitely.
After playing games like the Virtua Tennis series on Dreamcast and Topspin Tennis on Xbox, I'd have to say that I was really disappointed by the shallow tennis mechanics of Mario Tennis. On the bright side, very young kids may enjoy this game as the learning curve is extremely short.

There's not much to say about this title. Nintendo was hoping to make some money on any junk with the Mario name. The game is fun at first, but after a couple hours it gets repetitive and totally boring. NOTHING can save this title. Nintendo is trying to trick you with this junk. This whole Mario sports thing is dumb. Golf was the only good one. Guess what's coming next (really, I checked Nintendo's site). Mario soccer, Mario baseball, and (seriously!) Mario Dance Dance Revolution. Uggghhhh! There is only so much money Nintendo can make off Mario. Maybe if we boycott this game and the other Mario sports ones Nintendo will think about quality before cash. (Side note: Though NBA street V3 features 3 Mario characters it is by no means a Mario sports game. In fact, it is rather cool.
Overall Not as Good as the Original

I wanted to love this game, I really did. The N64 original still stands as one of my favorite games for the system so i was looking forward to this update. The biggest flaw with this game is the newly added power shots. Each character has an offensive one that hits the ball in such a way its more dificult to return and a defensive one that you use to hit a ball you would've otherwise missed. Both kinds are accompanied by an animation such as Mario pulling out his hammer to hit the ball or Peach blowing a kiss at the ball to strike it back. These animations are fun the first few times, but they get annoying very quickly. They also distract from the actual tennis and they cause matches to drag on way too long especially the defensive ones. An example of a distraction I constantly encountered is Yoshi's offensive shot. He hits the ball and it is followed by a rainbow trail until the second bounce. The problem is the trail with all its bright colors and sparkly doodads immediatly catches the eye and your distracted. Many of the other character offense shots are the same. Worst of all you cant turn them off in the one player which is majorly frustrating. Thankfully the option is there for multiplayer so these arent really a problem there. In both modes though character balance is a problem. To put it bluntly Bowser Junior is a cheap bastard. There are a few other characters who just seem better than others all around but he's the worst. The game does look gorgeous however and there is alot to unlock. The multiplayer is still a blast and its definately better then the firsts if you turn those dang power shots off. Unfourtunately the single player despite having more to offer falls way behind the first. Overall if you really like tennis games and all you have is a gamecube then yeah youll want to buy this mainly because there are no other good options on the system. If you can gurantee you're going to have people over to have matches with alot then go ahead and buy this also. Just know that when no one else is around it will probably be gathering dust. Definately rent this one before buying if you intend to play by yourself. Maybe some of you will be better able to handle the "improvements" these power shots supposedly add to the game than I.
Looks okay

I would give this 3 out of 5 from the look of it....Mario Power Tennis doesn't seem like the best name, they should have just kept it as Mario Tennis or something. However, I must say that the graphics look really good, and there seems to be a lot of different modes to choose from. However, I think it will turn out to be not as good as the original Mario Tennis for N64. Nintendo seems to be overusing Mario and his little "gang" of friends.
The items seem a little weird to me, and some modes seem pointless, such as one where you try and practice against a Blooper that has 8 tennis racquets. Boo has a special move where he splits into a lot of Boos, which sounds cheap unless the other Boos don't do exactly the same things as the normal Boo.
I suggest that if you liked Mario Kart: Double Dash!! A LOT then maybe you should buy this game. For the gamer who tends to like the better Mario games and is unsure about the sports area, maybe you should rent it first. If you just love shooters and RPGs and other categories much more than Mario sports, this game is probably not for you.
aghh!

I rented this game and liked it in the begining but later I got bored. When I played the tournament I realized the new power shots are sometimes impossible to hit and if a player misses the ball they can use a power shot to get it back in play. Some of the regular shots are cheap to, and this makes me very frustrated. So when you get this game turn off the power shots.
Okay game

This game is okay. The graphics are good and there is a variety of mini games. The replay value is moderate. If you want a great Mario
sports game, then get Super Mario Strikers when it comes out. It's a Mario soccer game. I played the demo and it was really fun. Get that instead of this.

Positives-many interesting courts to choose from. These range from a "gimmic" Luigi's Castel to a more "serious" grass, clay or hard court
- the characters all have their own special power moves. These serve to add some sort of random twist to the tennis action.
- there are a multitude of everyone's favorite Mario characters to choose from. Furthermore there are many characters to unlock. Each chacater is given the helpful label such as "all-around" for Mario or "power for Wario
- the instruction manual is very informative. It provides the gamer with information on how to perfome the more technical shots such as the drop shot and the lob.
- there are many mini games to keep a gamer interested.
- great multi player mode.
- like all nintendo designed and published games, it is very easy to pick up and play.
- lastly, the game is very fun to play if only for a short time.
Negatives-at times the game play may seem rather slow. It can be adjusted in multi-player mode but in single player mode i am yet to find any such option.
- the tounament mode, which is the heart of the single player game, is not at all deep. It consists of three rounds each round does not get more difficult then the last. In other words, the player the gamer faces in the first round is just as challenging as the play he will face in the final.
- the character's power moves, especially when playing doubles, can get very annoying. Each time a "power shot" occurs, there is a 4 second cut scene which disturbes the game action.
- lastly, besides the "advanced" difficulty game setting, the game is very easy to play. This game will not be challanging to anyone who can return a cross court shot (which mean everyone).

I think if this is exactly like the 64 game just take out the power and stick with Mario Tennis.
All of the siquills shoud have diverent titals but just swiching systems just stick with the same name.
This game was fun to a point but i think it would get boring to kids 11-13 it would be better for 7 mabey 6-10.
