Limitless and Relatable

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 9 / 9
Date: April 02, 2005
Author: Amazon User

I purchased the special DVD edition a week ago and have put in about 20 hours. Aside from playing Sim City 4 on a friend's computer for about 45 minutes, this is my first exposure to the Sim universe.

CUSTOMIZATION

The biggest appeal to the game is that it is limitless. Unlike other computer games with preset plots, where you kill the bad guy or alien, rescue the princess, and then you're done, this game is modifiable. Not only can you customize it, but the game developers, Electronic Arts (EA), also encourage it. Their official website contains links where you can download clothing (skins), decorations, objects, houses, and people. Players have turned themselves into fashion designers, interior decorators, and real estate developers (all in the Sim world, of course). If you don't like the music or movies that come with the game, you can add your own. If you don't like the characters that come with the game, you can create your own. A few websites have even created characters that look like celebrities. With the Sim Body Shop application, you can even create yourself and play yourself in the game. EA even tells you how to cheat the game, such as turning the aging off, so your Sims never grow old.

The game is time-consuming to say the least. Aside from the learning curve, you can manage multiple people, multiple clothes, multiple lots, multiple objects, multiple aspirations, and multiple neighborhoods. Many reviewers complain that the game did not come with many clothing choices, make-up choices, decorating choices, etc. I think EA knew that players would come out with a lot of custom content on their own, which they have. There is much to do and keep track. This game will keep you occupied for weeks on end.

Another appeal of the game is that we can relate to the lifestyles and aspirations of the characters. I don't know about you, but I have never driven any formula one race cars, traveled in space, or slayed any dragons. But, I can relate to the Sims. They eat, bathe, use the toilet, go to work, kiss, fall in love, have babies, shop, cook, clean, get sick, lose their jobs, get jealous, etc. What would happen if I quit my job and decide to throw a house party every other day? Or have five different girlfriends simultaneously? Or woo hoo in public? Or build a bright magenta kitchen that is the largest room in the house? Now I can find out.

PACKAGING & DOCUMENTATION

The special DVD edition comes with two disks: the game disk (which is used to install and play the game) and a DVD bonus disk, which has interviews with the game developers, including the game's creator. At the end of each interview, a game hint displays. The bonus disk also has a goodies section with banners, icons, wallpaper, and desktop backgrounds. The box also includes a user guide, PRIMA® Official Hint Book, and a list of key commands. The 76-page user guide is 4½"x7" and introduces all the features of the game. The PRIMA Official Hint Book is 4½"x6½", only six pages, and really just a teaser to get you to buy their full version 366-page book. The key commands sheet lists keyboard combinations for many of the commonly used commands. (I find this sheet most helpful for using the keyboard as much as possible, because I suffer from repetitive motion injury from using the mouse.)

FINAL NOTE

Please pay attention to the system requirements, because they are quite high. My computer is 15 months old and needed two drivers installed before I could get it to work without crashing/freezing. The game can eat much space on your computer especially if you download custom content.

I wish I never bought this game

It appears that the game would be great if it worked. I just received the game yesterday and was able to play for approximately 20 mins before the locked up and the graphics started to overlap. I tried everything they recommended including uninstalling and reinstalling the game, I even went as far to exchange the one I bought for another disk no help. My computer not only meets but exceeds the requirements so there is diffinately a glitch and I must say I am extremely disappointed. It would be more satisfied if I simply flushed my money down the toilet than spending it on this sorry production of what should have been a great game.
All I can say is while I used to be a Sims fan (until this game) it was a total waste of money.
I now have a game that is useless and while I can exchange it for the same game I cannot get my money back.
I wish I had read the other reviews before I bought it.
My advice to anyone is thinking about buying this game is UNLESS YOU LIKE THROWING AWAY MONEY DO NOT BUY THIS GAME UNTIL THEY HAVE EITHER FIXED THE GLITCH OR CREATED A PATCH TO FIX IT.

A game of "house" for the ages

When the Sims originally came out it created an empire. Will Wright, already famous thanks to his successful SimCity series, got the idea of simulating the lives of people. Viola, the Sims! Maxis's unique sense of humor shines throughout the game, as it did in SimCity. The odd things that happen are immensely funny and lighthearted, even if they result in the Sim's death. This may creep out some, but it enchants others. Fans lapped up the Sims and its expansion packs, earning Maxis and Electronic Arts millions of simoleans (or dollars, your choice.)

And now they have come out with a second. The Sims 2 stands on its own as a whole new way of visiting and controlling your favorite digital people. Maxis is going beyond the limits of its original game. Aging, always something fans yearned for, is now a reality. Your Sims go from toddler to geiser all under your protective or destructive wing. You have to be careful though, because they retain the memories of what you have done to them. If the first kiss doesn't go well, the digital dude might have problems finding a girlfriend in college.

Things have gotten harder and therefore more interesting, and the pot is heating up. The frenzy will begin anew, as the expansions continue. Will Wright, Maxis, and Electronic Arts will be rich. But would we have it any other way?

great game

Some people on here said that the Sims age to fast. I think that the aging process takes way to long. If they would have added another age or made it longer no one would ever complete a whole family. Completing a family takes too long as it is.

I really wanted this game in the first place because the people age. In the first Sims if you made a kid they would stay a child forever.

If you get the Nightlife expantion pack your Sim can have a car. You don't get to see them go places in the car, but I guess some things never change. Also in the Nightlife expantion pack you can make your Sim into a vampire.

In the University expantion pack a new age is added to the aging process. Your Sim can now become a young adult and go off to collage. Going through collage takes forever though and I would never suggest this pack to anyone.

A new expantion pack is out now. It is called Family Fun Stuff. I really enjoy this one. New clothes and furniture are added like always, but this pack mainly focusses on children not adults. You can dress up your children Sims as mermiads, dragons, knights, and princesses. The new bedroom funiture concists of ocean theme, castle, and just plain girly.

With regular Sims comes the body shop. Here you can make custom hair, eyes, skin, hair color, and clothes for all ages of Sims. The body shop is hard to learn how to opperate, but after a while its easy.

I would suggest any and all of these games to anyone over the age of 12 because of the way the Sims make babies.

Major Bug in the Sims 2

Yes, I was hit by the jump bug, as are many many others who bought this game and now find it unplayable. Below is a link to the sims 2 bbs post that talks about this bug.
(...)
Let me repeat, this is a game breaker! The workaround from EA is only a complicated reset button for your family. In addition, the bug returns. Some people got it after only a week of playing. It hits your most played families and then spreads to the rest of the neighborhood. The bug causes you to not be able to share interests, woo hoo, hot tub, eat, watch tv or talk on the phone with other sims. If I were a consumer who knew about this ahead of time, I would have waited for the first patch to buy it, or I wouldn't have bought it at all.

DVD Edition versus CD Edition

I think that everything there is to be said about the Sims 2 has already been said (it's the best game I've ever played), but I'd like to point out the difference between the DVD Edition and the CD (aka normal) edition for those who may be confused.

The CD version contains 4 CDs, and the game's files are spread over these. This Amazon item, the DVD edition, comes with . . . you guessed it, a DVD, including the regular game plus some special features: behind the scenes with the creators, things like that. If your computer has a DVD drive, you should get this version because it has extra features for no extra cost.

Hope that helps someone. I know my grandparents were confused . . .

Sims 2 Almost Here

(I'm not under 13 i'm 15 just eaiser to post here)

The sims will be arriving September 17th but if you pre-orderd it and had it air mailed the night before it should arive the 14th which is the day its gonna be shipped out.

In the sims you have more control than ever before. you can get low enough to the floor to see the sky and you can make your sim however you want them to look like. Your sims can actually die of old age and die by being struck by lightning. There is a talk that you can have a car just like in Sim's Bustin' Out, of course this is just a rumor. Also you can have weather depending on the season but there is also talk they took that feature out, so don't get your hopes up for weather in the game. You now can hav weddings with lots of people and your sims will stand at the alter from what I heard. Also Funnerals too. your sims progress through their life starting as a todler, Tenager, Adult, and Elder. I think each progress to the next stage o life is 10 sim days, of course you can turn this option off if you want. You now can build the house of your dreams with new building tools. You can have up to 4 stories including a basement and Attic. If your sim teenager breaks any laws the can get arrested but wont be sent away forever or at all but probley fined. If a male sim gets abducted they will return pregnet. When your wife gets pregnet you can see the signs of pregnacy. There are many new jobs including some for teenagers and when an Elder sim retires he or she will recive money for retiring. There is an area for grocery shopping and for clothes, there also may be community lot for some R&R. Overall this game is gonna be awsome, i'm a diehard sim fan and i always will be. So don't think twice about buying this game so just buy it. The 50 bucks is worth it I gaurentee it but you need a fast computer to run it. Have fun with it.

CANT WAIT TILL THE SIMS 2 COMES OUT

I cant wait for the sims 2 to come out. Its going to be awesome. Here are some pros and definitely no cons. ha ha.

*there is a dna system so that your kids can look like you
*your baby starts out as a baby and gradually goes up the scale of growing. Specifically-baby,toddler,preteen,teen,adult,elder.
*there are new jobs and when you keep getting promoted you can unlock certain items. When you retire you get retirement money. (well, when you're a "senior" that is.)
*you can get killed a whole bunch of different ways.(I guess that's really not good.)
*You can get abducted by aliens.
*you can own two houses so that you can have a vacation house.
*if your sims get a divorce, the one that moves out gets to take all of its stuff with it.
*your sims have a diary that records special events that happen in your life, such as getting a boyfriend, breaking up with your
boyfriend,getting a house,getting married,etc.,etc.
*your house can have four stories including a basement and attic,if you want it.
*you can put furniture and windows on diagonal walls.
*when you play with your baby too much it throws up on you.
*your sims are more aware so that when they see someone in the bathroom they look through the window.

This is just a beginning of new things on the sims 2. If you want to find out what the rest are,i guess you are going to have to buy it and find out for yourself.

great game but some problems

First off, this game is way better than the first sims. Second, its fun with the way better graphics and the more things you can do. This game is VERY ADDICTING!! YOU WILL BE ON THIS GAME FOR 5 HOURS AND NOT KNOW IT!!! As fun as this game goes, do NOT over play this game. You will soon find yourself bored with the family you made and move on. Soon you'll be bored period. You can only take so much in the sims until you just fall asleep.

This game is fun, but there are some weird things that annoy me. If you have kids and they move out... PLAY AS THE PARENTS!!! If you stop playing as the parents, they will stay the same age. Once my guy died of old age and his parents werent even old yet!! Thats just WAY to weird. Another thing is when you go downtown and come back, your sim may not come back. One time he never showed up back home. Its like the computer deleted him. That made me a little upset.

As I have warned you before, take ALOT of breaks with this game or it will soon grow boring. Also play this game when you can spend alot of time.
