Brilliant Nintendo Masterpiece w/ Unique+Addictive Gameplay

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 13 / 14

Animal Crossing is a bit of a paradox. It is without question one of the most unique video game experiences to be had anywhere. I am not sure how to describe or classify it. It isn't really a life simulation, even though some aspects of it do mirror the gameplay mechanics of Electronic Arts' "The Sims". I have played "The Sims", and I must say that even with all that it has to offer, it lags behind "Animal Crossing" where sheer fun is concerned.

Animal Crossing has cartoony looking characters and animals, but this aspect really only adds to its charm. Looking at screenshots, one gets the impression that the game is childish, and may only have been designed for kids. The game really has to be played for several hours (spanned over several days) in order for the player to begin to experience what this game is all about. The graphics, while they do have slightly blurry textures, are completely charming. I love them. The character design is brilliant. While the game does not showcase the GameCube as the graphics powerhouse that it can be, the player becomes so engrossed in the game that you will never even think about the graphics. In several instances, I actually found myself marveling at the subtle graphical touches this game employs, even though they are low resolution or low polygon by todays standards.

Gameplay is where this game excels. Be careful and ready to be completely consumed if you buy this game. Although I don't wish to repeat everything other reviewers have mentioned, this game can't be given an honest weighing-in without mention of the real time clock. When it is 11:21am on March 3rd in real life, it will be in Animal Crossing too. If you don't play the game for a week, the next time you do your neighbors will wonder where you have been and there will be weeds growing all over town. This adds a very real aspect to the game. Characters sleep at night. They buy things, get mail, send mail, build igloos, go shopping, visit other towns, move in and out of your town, go fishing, donate items to museums, catch bugs, catch fish, find fossils, garden, listen to music, play classic Nintendo games, make clam chowder, design clothing and umbrellas, visit a tropical island, and the list goes on and on.

Game Boy Advance (GBA) connectivity feature: If you own a GBA, you can enjoy even more features in Animal Crossing. Yes... This does sound gimmicky, and it is at first. You will soon discover though, that Nintendo has implemented a feature that is currently immpossible to duplicate on any other company's game system. That feature is that there are about a dozen or more classic Nintendo NES games that you can gain access to in Animal Crossing. These games are downloadable to your GBA, provided you have purchased the Nintendo GameCube/GBA cable. Yes, you can walk around and play Donkey Kong on your GBA, but only if you are fortunate enough to uncover it in Animal Crossing.

E-reader feature: In addition to owning a GBA, if you purchase Nintendo's E-reader, you can collect collectible Animal Crossing cards and upload them through your GameBoy Advance and into the Animal Crossing game itself. These cards can contain characters, music, furniture, other 8-bit NES games, etc. I don't yet own and E-reader, but I will buy one soon. There is just so much to do in this game, that I can't currently imagine adding a whole other aspect to it.

In summation: Animal Crossing is easily the most innovative game of the year. It takes the addictive concept of "The Sims" one step further by acutally making it... drumroll please... ENJOYABLE. It gets even more fun when there are more players because they can leave mail and gifts for each other. The music and graphics while not technically groundbreaking, are charming and of the highest design calibur you could ask for. The songs actually get stuck in my head sometimes because they are so catchy. I have never enjoyed non-violence and creating friendship so much in a game because these are usually things that players are never rewarded for. I only wish that games this unique and well-executed graced our consoles more often. In my opinion, Animal Crossing is the best game of the year... and yes I have played Metroid Prime which is the best adventure game I have ever played. Enjoy!!!

People kewp asking "Whats isn so special about this game? They think its stupid. Ask most of them "Have u played it for more than two hours? and most will reply no.
Animal Crossing has bad graphics and sound. All N64 Japanese ports have that charicteristic.

What makes Animal Crossing special?
1. It has an enormous amount of stuff u can do
2. It comes with a slew of classic NES games
3. It is real time
4. ITS NOT THE SIMS!! ITS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE REAL!! (Hech, all ur neighbors are ANIMALS!
5. It dosent easily get repetitive (Play for short incriments each day. This way, u wont "Burn Out" And you can play for years and see all the cool new stuff each day.
6. It comes w/ a free memory card
7. Its only $20 bucks!

an awesome game

Animal crossing is a mix of the sims and an RPG. This game give you freedom to do almost anything you want. When you begin the game you're on a train. This guy asks you're name and what town you're going to. No one town is the same. Once you get there yu get soled a house. You have to have a part time job. You collect stuff to add to you're hous. You make friends. Do tasks, fish, and even search for dino bones. The NES games that you get can be transfered over the GBA GC link cable, and you can play the NES games on your Gameboy advance. You can even ri apart flowers or plant them. You can visit museums and visit shops. You can mail letters and trade items with friends. And if you bring your memory card to a friends house who also has animal crossing and visit there town. Even a health inspector comes to your house and rates it.

This is one of the most innovative games ever. It's almost like a secnd life. The folks at Nintendo have done it again and put together one of the most creative games ever seen!

this game can take over your life

This game has almost taken over my life. When I'm not playing this game i'm thinking about playing it. This game is different from any other game you have ever played it changes everyday. You could probally play this game for an entire year before getting to see everything that is in the game. This how to make video games; SONY and MICROSOFT need to take notes on this. this is why nintendo is the best. You will never find a game on the PS2 or the XBOX that is this good.

A Really Great Game!!!

okay, if you only love action, shooter, adventure games then this probably isn't a game for you. I myself love those kinds of games but i love this game too. and also if u like harvest moon, (which i really really hope nintendo makes for GCN) then you'll like this. you start off on a train and talk to this really annoying purple cat named rover. then you name your self and your town(i myself named my town home). Then you get off the train and talk to the store owner, you pick 1 of the 4 tiny houses. The house is 19,800 bells(its what they call their dollars) you only 1000. so you work at his shop and work off 1,400 bells(you do 4 or 5 "chores"). then you find 1 of 4 fruits in your towns trees (apples, cherrys,peaches, or pears). Your town only gets 1 kind. You do favors for the neighbors and earn money or furnature for your house or for u to sell. you can design your own clothes too!. The fruits native to your town are worth 100 bells each, the other 3 are worth 500 apiece, and the only way to get the others is by going to a friends town and get some then plant the trees in your town. Your neighbors houses will be bigger than yours but when u pay off the rest of the debt you house gets bigger and you can change the roof color to how u want it. You can catch fish and do 1 of 3 things with it;
1: sell it at the store
2: give it to the musuem and its put in an aquarium to look at
3: put it your house for a pet
same thing with bugs (bugs are worth upto 5,000 bells!(depending on the bug)).by selling fruits (especially the fruits not native to your town) you can make a fortune, i've made over 30,000 bells from them because every 3 or 4 days the fruits grow back! If you are unsure, rent it and atleast try it!!! you owe yourself atleast that!

Addicting!

The sign of a good video game is that you don't want to stop playing it. And Animal Crossing is the kind of game that you don't want to stop playing. Building on the basis of it's spiritual predecessor, the Harvest Moon series, Animal Crossing sends you to a parallel world that oddly mirrors our own. Time and date are handled by the Gamecube's internal clock. If you wake up January 15th at 9:00 AM to play, it's January 15th at 9:00 AM in the world of Animal Crossing. Time is a factor, with some events only happening on certain days or times of the day.

Even though they are complete opposites in content, Animal Crossing is like Grand Theft Auto, insomuch as they are both go anywhere, do anything kind of games. There's no "winning" in Animal Crossing. There are many objectives to complete, but there's really no end to the game.

The main complaint I have is that dialog with your animal friends can get repetitious, and is unskippable (at least I haven't found a way to skip it) but this is a small price to pay for a very rich, involved game.

Addicted at 41...and so is my 7 year old!

My 7 year old daughter and I play this game together and have more fun! There are many many aspects to this game; social, because you have to maintain contact and correspondance with your friends to keep them; economic, because you have to earn, save and spend your money wisely to get ahead; artistic, because you have to decorate your home and you can create designs to put on clothing, wallpaper and signs; even ecological, because you need to sustain the environment and not cut down too many tress or pollute. Did I mention that it's a riot? The only violence possible in this game is if you hit some poor soul over the head with a bug net...and that does get their attention! I would highly recommend this game as a tool to open up educational dialogue with your 7-10 year olds!

So much fun but really addictive!

I first rented this game because my freind recomended it for me. Well I almost wish she hadn't. I got addicted! I couldn't stop playing. Now about the game it's self. Well Animal Crosing has so many things to do. When you first stop playing you are on a train and a cat named Rover starts asking you questions like: what's your name (that's where you chose a name), Where are you going? (that's where you pick the town name). He also askes if you have money (or bells as the makers call it) and a place to live. Well it depends on what you answer. I answerd I didn't have a place to live or a lot of money and he caleed his freind Tom Nook. So after you get of the train you meet Tom and you pick out a house. The price is 18,000 bells. you don't have enough money so you work at is shop Nook's Cranny and pay some of it off. Then he lets you go and you have to pay off the rest. You can sell things to make bells. After you are done paying off your house you can get it remodeld. If you do it's a lot of money! Now about life in Animal Crossing... There is the Police Statoin where you can see lost items and claim them (even take them if there not yours!).There is a tailor where you can design your own pattern for 350 bells. On special holidays- check your " Collage Rule"- the Mayor will be there and he'll give you a gift. There is also neighbors which you can do favors and in return you can get clothes, staionary and furniture that you can use, sell or drop in the dump. You can sell or buy things at Nook's Cranny. It will change a few times by the way. You can fish to. That is really fun. You can keep, donate to the mueseum or save it in case you see the starving artist... You can get a horoscope by Katirina (for 50 bells) and buy turnips from Joan. There is also so many other things to do! Take my advice and buy Animal Crossing!

I bought this game at a time where I had oodles of time to spare. This game quickly dug into that and more. I couldn't believe how much time I would put into each day.

Based on the Gamecube's internal clock for minutes, hours, days, months, and years, if you're gone for too long, bugs start to appear and neighbors are less neighborly. I found myself playing one day, setting the clock ahead a day or two, and playing for a week. Then getting back to reality only to play more.

Here is the basic premise:

1). Get into debt
2). Get out of debt
3). Get into debt
4). Get out of debt

And it keeps going on like this. While this seems like a rather dull premise on paper, Nintendo has made things like catching fish and finding fossils more fun than I can possibly explain.

While the graphics on this title are sub-par at best, it certainly makes up for it with the 100's of hours of gameplay and original nintendo games which can be purchased from Tom Nook's shop or accessed with your GBA.

I love this game and will probably pick it up tonight again, as I haven't played it in a few days.

Animal Crossing also know as"Animal Forest" in Japan is one of the greatest and maybe the best Gamecube game for this year. Animal Crossing is a communication game actually the first of it's kind. You live in real time and date. Some special dates you can see rare and uncommon animals and items for Tom Nook a store Raccoon. You start off as moving to this new town in a train. A dog name Rover next to you in the train will ask you your name there you will give your name he will say that's an odd name and laugh. He will then ask you what town your going to and there you name the town what ever you want. THere you will arrive at the train station in your town. A Monkey with help you out. There go to the Police Station you your town map. There a Raccoon Tom Nook will offer you 4 houses pick on. You don't have enough money to pay him, so he'll hire you part time at his store. There you life will begin. With the NEW! E-Reader from Nintendo swipe Animal Crossing cards for tips, hints and unlock bonus things. If you buy the Nintendo Gamecube Gameboy Advance Cable you can connect to you GBA to a private island or make designs for your clothing by talking to the Mable Sisters to make shirts, hatss and umbrellas. You can design you house floor and put at picture on your front door. Yes you can play the classic NES games and also transfer it to you GBA too. Possibilites are endless so buy this game I know I AM!!. Well you want more info post it as a review on this same page me. I'll write another review soon..... Oh yeah I forgot you do have 3 vacant houses left so fill them up with your friends or fill them up your self and have a character have more money or whatever. Yes you can travel to your friends town, if you do collect their fruit from their towns trees sell them and plant some of them because foriegn fruit costs more. Bye.
