Fun Game with Great Graphics

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 5 / 6

I just finished playing "Return to Mysterious Island", and I must say that it was quite fun & the graphics were awesome! The only reason that I've given this game 4 stars instead of 5 is because of 2 frustrating problems with the system. First, whenever you leave the game to do something else (like read your email or get hints), you have to completely exit out of the game and then reload your saved game to start again. Second, you have to point and click to move anywhere, and there is quite a stall between when you click, and when you actually move. Once you get used to these two "glitches" however, the game really is a lot of fun.

"Return to Mysterious Island" is about a young girl who competes in various boating competitions. During one of these competitions, a bad storm occurred, and when she awoke she found herself without her boat, and on the shores of a deserted island - or what appears to be a deserted island.

Your "job" is to find various items strewn throughout the island, and combine them when necessary to come up with other needed items. With the ultimate goal being to get back to civilization.

Most of what you need to do is logical - however, I still found it necessary to go to "UHS Hints" a few times to help me get back on track. I highly recommend this website, as it allows you to choose how many hints to take, so if you just need a nudge, you can choose just a few hints - this way the result isn't ruined for you before you get a chance to try your own wits...

This particular game isn't all that long - which I like, because I tend to lose interest if I can't finish it within a few days to a week - Whether you like this particular "feature" will be dependent on how long you like to be engaged in any particular game.

Overall, it's a great game & I would highly recommend it - especially to those who are relatively new to playing these types of games (as I am).

One of the best out there

Though not as grand as Syberia 2, or as visually stunning as Myst 4, this is one of the best games I've ever played. The story is intriqueing, the interface is simple and the item collection and assembly is a joy. My only complaint is that it seems too short. A bargain at twice the price.

Fun game

Overall a good game. You will occasionally need to refer to a walkthrough (You can find one that some kind soul posted free online by Googleing the title of a game and "walkthrough".) However, almost all adventure/puzzle games are like this. Either you periodically refer to a walkthrough, or you get frustrated at some point where you are stuck and shelve the game.

Nice graphics. Some of the cutscenes are very simple, comic-book like drawings with sound. This sounds cheap, and I am sure it saved a lot of programming time as compared to computer animations, but it is really quite enjoyable. In fact, I think I liked it better than animated cutscenes!

Overall, a good game. I wish they had more adventure games like this. No blabbing, droning dialog that goes on forever. No endless reading of volumous diaries. Just problem solving and exploration.

A Decent Game But That Is All

You know the drill. Alone on an island, you search for/find/collect/combine/make things. That is the essence of the game. The challenge is to use your ingenuity to cope with your present circumstance. There are only two action sequences in the game. Both are arcade games. The first sequence you can and should ignore. It is a tedious waste of time. There is another way. The second sequence is essential to the game.

As you would expect, this is an inventory game. When I finished the game, I had over 50 items in inventory. This is due to the fact that redundancy is built into the game. At the beginning of the game, the screen displays a "health meter." You must find water and sufficient food to restore you to full health. You will have no problem finding more than enough food. What is left over remains in inventory. If you are dilligent in finding things, you will have enough items in inventory to solve several problems in more than one way. When the problem is solved, the other items remain in inventory. I never found a way to organize the inventory. There are simply too many items, and you are always discovering new ones.

This is not a puzzle game. Rather, there are problems to be solved. There is only one puzzle during the game. You can obviate solving this puzzle with your inventory. The important puzzles are stacked at the end of the game. There is redundancy here also.

The graphics are quite good and sufficiently detailed that it is not difficult to find things. I can remember only two instances where pixel hunting was required.

Those of you who are scientifically challenged will find a few rough patches. Scientific purists, on the other hand, will object to several features in the game such as a Maple tree in Fall color on an island with Palm trees.

All in all, "Return To Mysterious Island" is a game that will keep you interested, but it is not a game that you simply must keep playing.

Captivating...even if too short

This game held my interest. Some of the puzzles are complicated. I don't even know how I completed one. I was just guessing and clicking. I was very shocked when the game ended. It is a very short game. It held my interest and I thought about the combinations I could try even when I wasn't playing! My 9 year old is playing it. It should have a rating in between T and E. The violence is minimal at the most.

Great fun!

I'm an adventure game junkie. I didn't know exactly what to expect with RTMI, but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised from the start.

The game has many variants in play options, so the replay value is high. As a matter of fact, as soon as I finished it the first time I started over again just so that I could try some other approaches to problem solving (and trying to maximize my bonus points).

The inventory system is great - which is important in this game as you'll be spending quite a bit of time there. The obvious puzzle style puzzles were engaging, although not difficult. The true challenge in this game is simply being as resourceful as possible.

Well rendered, lovely to look at and easy to move around in, my only complaint is that the game does seem short. (Of course, I always feel that way about really fun games!) That's truly offset by the fact that you can play it differently time and time again, however.

best game of the year

I fiund this game to be very good, with logical solutions to the puzzles, except for one at the 215 point level (searching for what to do next was tough). My taste ruhs to the "Monkey Island" kind of game.

Ruined by the navigation!

I recently purchased Return to Mysterious Island, expecting good graphics and an intruiging plot. What a dissapointment!! I could only stomach this game for about 15 minutes before I started to feel truly sick to my stomach. The game is set up in such a way that the cursor is "stuck" to the screen--whenever you move your mouse, the screen moves with it, resulting in sharp, dizzying movements, and constant picking up of the mouse. I was extremely dissapointed; the plotline was great and I loved the combining objects and health bar ideas, very original. This game has everything--a good plotline, good writing and acting, great music, good graphic, original adventure ideas, interesting puzzles...but the navigation ruins it all! I recommend this game only if you have an extremely strong stomach.

Just couldn't get into this one

Good graphics and an okay storyline, but it's all marred by the continuous string of 'pick it up' and 'use it on everything in sight. Baking a cake for a monkey might have seemed clever on paper, but in reality it's just silly. And after a while, you get tired of running around looking for the various parts needed to make this and that.

And come on, does anyone really buy the idea that she's going to find just what she needs to make a battery charger for her phone/database? And she can really get internet reception (the news stories) on the island????

I didn't bother finishing it ... it got to the point that it didn't matter to me any more.

If you haven't bought it, think again. If you did ... well, I hope you have more fun than I did!

Good introduction to adventure games

Return to Mysterious Island was a good starter game. My experience with adventure games was very minimal and this game was really easy to learn... and the story line was interesting. Its from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.... Capt. Nemo was stranded on an island where his ghost still haunts and the main character for this game has to find his body, and put his spirit at rest. You get to run alllll over the island looking for clues and tools. The more creative you get with the tools you find, the more points you gain.

If you're a seasoned gamer, I wouldn't recommend this.
