Let's face it. If you are a Pokemon fan, you _will_ buy this game, if you don't already have it, and it doesn't matter in the slightest what I or anyone else has to say about it.

Personally, I'm not a Pokemon fan; like most grownups, I find the TV series to be way too cloying and cutesy, and I have an overwhelming urge to flee the room whenever I'm serenaded by some child's cries of "Pika! Pika!" I expected a game filled with the little critters to be about as much fun as an all-night Barney movie marathon.

But I have to tell you that I was very pleasantly surprised. Don't get me wrong: Pokemon Red and Blue are still cute games, but it's cuteness at a very bearable, adult-accessible level. And you'll find yourself playing a very enjoyable, approachable game, with a surprising depth of play. There's a lot of fun involved in capturing and developing your Poke-army, and a lot of strategy in deciding the best set of techniques to obtain and develop.

You'll have a good time. And if you're not careful, you may even find yourself negotiating Pokemon trades with your next-door neighbor's kids.

The game is awesome.You get Charmander,Bulbasaur,Squirtle or sometimes Pikachu from Proffeser Oak,one of those you may choose as a first Pokemon.Now you can catch and train others.In this version and the blue version,you can link two game boys together for head-to-head competition.Not in the yellow version though!

This game is really fun! When you start off Proffesor Oak gives you the choice of three Pokemon. One of them is the fire-type Charamander which in the end evoles into the fire breathing, claw slashing Charizard. Next is the water-type Squirtle which evoles into the all powerful Blastoise. Last is the Grass/Poison type Bulbasaur which evoles into the razor leaf Venusaur. In addition to Proffesor Oak asks a small favor... to fill up an electronic encyclepida called a pokedex. Trade with friends to capture them all. I did and I have 151 types of pokemon. Also you have to beat a group called the ELITE FOUR and if you don't YOU HAVE TO START FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE GAME. Hope you had as much fun as I did when I played this game.

A great game for kids, beats having them watch tv!

My kids and I all love the Pokemon Gameboys (the three of us each have our own Gameboy). The red Pokemon game is very similar to the blue, with the Yellow having some slight differences.

I like the way the Pokemon game challenges kids. I suggest also buying one of the books which shows the various routes and places. This allows kids to work at the tasks without getting frustrated.

The idea is to start at Prof. Oak's house, get your first Pokemon from him, and then journey all around the land of Pokemon, collecting various wild pokemon (which you catch by battling them until they faint), and doing battle with other trainers along the way.

In the process, kids learn to manuever through mazes of increasing complexity (which is why the manuals are a help), to gather and use items, and to develop strategies for fighting various types of Pokemon. My five year-old even started to read while using her Gameboy, from needing to know which items she had with her (in her Item List)!

All in all these are great games which can be played over and over (although only one game at a time can be saved), and which will provide your kids with hundreds of hours of fun.

This game is simply addictive! You start as Ash Ketchum from Pallet town, on the mission of collecting, training, and battling cute little critters called Pokemon (with an accent, if you're a Pokemaniac like me). The things I liked most about this game is that it is so absorbing. You have the chance to live in your own little world, and become a hero. This game is very interactive and you can train Pokemon or battle Pokemon with a friend via the Game Link Cable. I would not reccomend this game to children under 8 years of age, because you can make mistakes that will affect the rest of your game. Very frusterating. The game gets more complicated as you move along, with the sinister elements of Gary, Team Rocket, and the not-so-Elite Four creeping slowly in. Caves and tunnels get longer and harder to navigate, and rival pokemon trainers are waiting around every corner for the chance to fight with your Pokemon. Money is also an important factor, because you must purchase things along the way; tiny globes-pokeballs- to keep your pokemon in, potions to keep them strong, ether to keep their attack energy from running out, ect. If an enemy trainer overpowers you, half your money dissapears- Pokecrooks, perhaps? Heh heh. Although it is fairly complicated and explaining it totally clearly would take a lllooonnnnggg time, Pokemon is a good game. Personally, the thing that bugs me most is that you can't play as a girl. PS: This game never HAS to end. You can play until you're bored by setting goal for yourself. A definate asset.

Pokemon 1. The first game in the Pokemon series, released in Red and Blue versions.

The Pokemon series is a strange one, indeed. For years, it was a phenomenon in Japan, but Nintendo strangely delayed on bringing the series to America. After a few years, Nintendo finally took a gamble and imported the first game of the series, Pokemon 1 for the Game Boy, to America. The game was available in two versions, Red and Blue, at its 1998 release. Less than a year later, Pokemon 1.5, Yellow, would get an American release. Although the games started out relatively unknown in America, they became an phenomenon overnight, much like they had in Japan. How does Pokemon 1 measure up? Read on for my review.

PROS:
-THE GREATEST STRENGTH HERE IS ORIGINALITY. Nintendo has long been a master of innovations and trying new things, and this game demonstrates it beautifully. Only Nintendo could find a way to market RPGs to the masses.
-THIS GAME WILL APPEAL TO PRETTY MUCH ANY VIDEO GAMER, WHETHER YOU LIKE POKEMON OR NOT. At first glance, this looks like a children's game. Looks are deceiving. Give it a try, and before long, you'll soon find yourself in a large world filled with depth, creatures, a storyline, and a collecting element that was unsurpassed at its time of release in Japan and America alike. Even if you hate the Pokemon TV series (and I know I do), you may end up loving this game. It's NOT just for kids. I was born on August 17, 1984, and I can honestly say that I LOVE this game.
-THE GAME FORCES YOU TO TAKE STRATEGY INTO ACCOUNT. There are different types of monsters scattered across the world, all of which cover different types. Different types are strong against and weak against other types (for instance, a water creature can defeat a fire creature easily, but a grass creature can easily defeat a water one.) You also must continually level up your creatures, and make sure to level them up evenly - failure to do so can create problems later in the game (as I found out the first time I played.)
-IF YOU'RE NEW TO THE GENRE OF ROLE PLAYING GAMES, THIS IS A GREAT INTRODUCTION. RPGs are generally fun games, but they're extremely complex and tough to learn. That's not the case here. The gameplay is extremely easy to learn, even if you've never played an RPG before in your life.
-THE SHEER VARIETY OF CREATURES IS IMPRESSIVE. There are fifteen main types of creatures (grass, water, fire, etc.), and tons of creatures within each type, and even a few hybrid types. The appearances of the creatures also vary greatly. You've got cutesy monsters (Clefairy, Jigglypuff, Chansey) as well as tough-looking ones (Golem, Machamp, Nidoking.) They say variety is the spice of life - and this game is living proof.
-YOU CAN SAVE THE GAME ANYWHERE, ANYTIME OUTSIDE OF BATTLE. This feature that many RPGs lack makes this an excellent travel game.
-IT'S OUT OF PRINT, AND CAN BE PURCHASED AT A USED GAMES STORE FOR A GOOD PRICE. If you're looking for fun but you're on a budget, you can't lose here.

CONS:
-IN MANY ASPECTS, THIS GAME WAS ALREADY OUTDATED WHEN IT GOT ITS NORTH AMERICAN RELEASE. The game was already THREE YEARS old when it arrived in America. The dated graphics in combat stand as solid proof of this. By the time the game got to America, better games had already arrived overseas.
-LATER ENTRIES IN THE SERIES PUT THIS ONE TO SHAME. Pokemon 2, which didn't make it to America until nearly two years after this game, puts this entry to shame. Even Pokemon 1.5 (released less than a year after this game) was an improvement in many ways.
-THE GAME GETS A BAD RAP FOR MANY REASONS. The TV series is horrible, and many people instantly judge the game based on it (NOT smart.) I urge you give this game a chance - DO NOT judge it without playing it.
-THE GAME IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE NEW GAME BOY ADVANCE POKEMON RPGS. Accordingly, you may want to shell out the extra cash and get one of them instead.

OVERALL:
Although this game is dated, it's still a damn fine classic Game Boy RPG. And since it's out of print now, consider stopping by your local used video games store and picking up a copy. If you're an RPG fan, you won't regret purchasing this.

Role Playing Games....they have gotten boring over the years. Fight and Fight and Fight...visit the plot...and fight some more! There was no little side victories you could do.

Nintendo ended that last year! With the release of Pokemon (Pocket Monster in Japan). This game revolutionized the RPG industry. You collect these different monsters called Pokemon. But there are not like...5 or 10 different types...there are 150! And you can't just have a certain amount...your boxes hold up to 255! You can fight and fight some more, and gain these badges...but the fun doesn't end there. You can hook up with a friend and beat up HIS pokemon (or vice-versa) or trade Pokemon!

This game is fun! Buy it today and try it out...instant addiction.

I'll have to admit, for the first, say, year and a half when this game was out, I so desperately tried to hate it... I didn't want to admit that I was into a little 'kiddie' game... however, just this past year, so many of my peers have been playing the game (and I go to Junior High too, I'm talking about 13, 14, 15 year olds playing this game). So, finally, I gave in, and for Christmas, I asked for a Game Boy Color and Pokemon Red... that was about all I got for Christmas due to the cost of those two expensive items, but it was definitely worth it...

This game is so... detailed... it's just unbelievable. It has a very easy learning curve, so after about half-an-hour I was cruising along with no problems at all. Catching your first Pokemon gives you a triumphant feeling, and beating your first trainer makes you feel like you're on top of the world, and you'll most likely find yourself screaming at the game, "Oh yeah, who's the man! That's right, that's what I thought!!!" Well, at least, that's what I did...

There are 150 Pokemon in this game (actually, in the Japanese version, there are 151), and it's a lot of fun trying to catch all of them. You can also keep track of all the Pokemon you've seen/caught with the Pokedex. Without this tool, the game would be much more frustrating.

I could really go on and on and on about this game, but there's a maximum of 1000 words, and unfortunately I think I've almost reached that limit. All I can say is, even if you don't have a Game Boy, or you're not even a fan of RPG's (I'm still not a big fan of them), you owe it to yourself to pick up this game and give it a try. It's some of the most fun you'll ever have in the gaming world.

In this game, you play a ten year old boy on a quest to become a master of those all too familiar Pokémon. Some people make it their goal to raise their pokemon to level 100, some just want to beat the elite four and some make it there goal to collect all 151. But it is important that not one Pokemon can do it all, they all have strangths and weeknesses angainst other types unlike other rpg's where if you have a level 50 fighter you're all set. I'd recomend this game to anyone who likes any kind of RPG.

the new games that nintendo comes out wiht has new and weird pokemon that is such a ..... Idea. if you like poke mon but but thinking this is the worst because its old. GET A LIFE!
older is often times better. And besides Red and blue are the ONLY I repeat ONLY games you you can get the best starter pokemon. heres a tip if you get one,DONT GET SQUIRTIL!
people often choose bulbasaur as thier first bcause of its awsome power in its evolved form Vensaur. Blastiose is cool but not the best,my recemendation is bulbasaur. but if you want a butterfree and try to take a short cut when you catch a metapod and evolve it, boy will you be sorry, it will only know harden,
evolve it from caterpi,by then even in metapod stage it will know tackle and string shot.and heres a tip...DONT CAPTURE MISSINGNO. it is a virus and will [mess] with the game if you catch it, you can defeat it to get the lots of rare candys and master balls but dont catch it
