Serious Letdown......

After playing Tony Hawk 2 for the GBA, I was under the impression that all the Advance games were going to be top-notch. Well, after playing Fire Pro, I learned that impression was completely false.

This game is a loser in almost every sense of the word. The graphics are weak...in fact they resemble GBC...ouch. The control is [bad]; I don't understand what the creaters were tying to do with interpolating percentages into a wrestling game. Oh well. Live and learn.

You can't go home again.

I played the original Firepro Wrestling on the Sega Saturn. It was released in Japan only and I needed a translation in English to do anything. My friends and I played this game over and over. In fact we still, to this day, say CRITICAL! Which is one of the few English words we could understand. When your wrestler was totally defeated he would be CRITICALed. The wrestler creation capabilities were and still are the very best offering from any wrestling game. It was 2 dimensional then and is still 2d on the GBA. If you are like me and don't care about graphics you may still enjoy this game. I bought it on Amazon and played it for about 3 minutes before checking out the wrestler creation. I was shocked to find the format had changed, but the tools for creation are still the same as they ever were. However my gaming tastes have changed a lot since 1999, and 2 dimensional graphics are just too hard to go back to. I can acknowledge the greatness of this game without actually enjoying it, but if it didn't cost me only 5 bucks I would be wrighting a way worse review. If you still pick up Mario Bros. now and again or if you run out to by every new Namco or Midway or Capcom "Classics" game. You may enjoy this game way more than I do now. You might actually get as much enjoyment out of it as my friends and I did 6-7 years ago. If you are either under 26 years old or are currently playing X-Box 360 or X-Box Live games like Halo2, steer clear of this one. 1999 rating 8.5 out of 10. 2006 3.3 out of 10.

This is the bset wrestling game for GBA. It has Sabu,Hayabusa,The H,Rob Van Dam,Sting,Stone Cold Steve Austin,Mike Awesome,Masato Tanaka,The Rock,Hulk Hogan,Goldberg Chris Benoit,Ultimo Dragon,Rey Mysterio,The Lame Cripple-H and a lot more. The promotions include,WWF,WCW,nWo Japan,FMW,NJPW,AJPW,PRiDE,UFC,M-Pro,NOAH and more. This is the most complete wrestling game. To unlock hidden Characters
[. . . ] To protect infringment rights, bam! Entertainment has made up fake names for the pro wrestlers. Most WCW and WWF stars will be recognizable by name, appearence or finisher. Some of the Japanese wrestlers will also be easy to identify by the same three traits listed above. I don't mind the 2-D graphics. This is a hell of alot better than WWF Road to Wrestlemania, which sucked completely. My mistake it'a [. . .] to unlock everybody. [. . .] is the hidden character code for Fire Pro 2. Sorry for the mix up. My bad.

This game is not as good as expected

As a professional wrestling fan, I have always been skeptical about games which do not have official licences. However, despite this, I bought Fire Pro Wrestling based on the low price, the good magazine ratings, and to help my anemic GBA game collection. Truly, it was the best purchase I've made for the system. The gameplay is fantastic and tight, the controls are fantastic and responsive and a breath of fresh air for those annoyed by console wrestling games, the graphics are fluid (not flashy, but anyone familiar with the stress fluid animation places on a processor would be VERY impressed). The modes of play, as well, are various, and perfect for any amount of time you have to spare. You can pick up the game and play a quick four minute UFC style match, or a tournament that can go on for hours. And, although not licenced, EVERY wrestler is based on real-life stars. And, with the battery back-up, you can easily permanently rename these wrestlers and their federation affiliations. You can also rename the federations. And of course, you can make your own wrestlers and organizations. I have been able to create accurate versions of Brock Lesnar, several ECW and XPW wrestlers, and even myself. The customization options really impress me. In fact, everything about this game impresses me. I have played it more often than Castlevania and Mario Kart, and not because it is a wrestling game; I find it more fun to play. Highest recommendation.

Great Fun

ok this is a great game. there are over 150 wrestlers, the graphics are ok, and the gameplay is AMAZING!! There are hundreds of different options. But this is not a game for button mashers. If you press a button 2 times.... it cancels the move. But if you like Wrestling or just fighting (there are UFC people on it) get it now!!! I haven't played Fire Pro Wrestling 2 yet, but i really want it. I'd get the first one first to make sure you like it.

OK, I'm not a Firepro fanboy. I don't automatically love anything that has the word "Firepro" in it. I'm not even a fan of puroresu (Japanese pro wrestling). I'm quite an American wrestling fan, and would not have bought this game if it hadn't had American wrestlers.

Wait a minute, you say, the Amazon.com review (and many of the customer reviews) says that the game doesn't contain WWF, WCW or ECW wrestlers. How wrong they were. In the Japanese version, there are wrestlers that look EXACTLY like American wrestlers and are disguised by clever aliases. For example, "The Game" Triple H is known as "The Gamemaster" Trouble J. Everything else about him remains the same as in real life, like his finisher, the pedigree. You can easily change his name back to Triple H with the rename feature. But in the American version, you see no "The Gamemaster" Trouble J or a wrestler that looks like Triple H. BAM!, the company who published this game, had to change the liknesses and revealing nicknames to fit American copyright laws. So in the US version, Triple H is "Gemni" Double Trouble, and his costume and skin have changed colors. But you can change this man of constellations back to a flawless Triple H in a few seconds. Pure genious. But the Japanese wrestlers, Shoot fighters (UFC, Pride, Rings), Luchadores, and so on only need a quick name change because their colors are authentic. Here's a quick list of the familiar WWF/WCW/ECW superstars in this game: Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, The Undertaker, Kane, Triple H, Big Show, Mankind, Cactus Jack, Vince McMahon, Andre the Giant, Ken Shamrock, Chris Jericho, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guererro, X-Pac, Goldberg, Randy Savage, Hulk Hogan, Sting, The Great Muta, Scott Steiner, Rick Steiner, Ric Flair, Mike Awesome, Kevin Nash, Rob Van Dam, and Sabu, to name a few.

Another brilliant aspect is the gameplay. Tired of being able to pull off ten non stop Shooting Star Presses at the beginning of a match with no problem. Fire Pro Wreslting has the solution. It's unique grappling system gives you 3 types of attacks: Weak, Medium and Strong. You are pretty much forced in the beginning of the match to work your opponent over with weak moves, such as clothslines, irish whips, scoop slams etc. If you try to bust out the Tombstones, Burning Hammers, Emerald Frosions and chokeslams early in the match, it will be reveresed by your opponent causing you massive damage. So you must start with weak attacks, then start to take control with medium attacks and finish with strong attacks, your finisher or one of your 5 signature moves. Also, unlike the acclaimed AKI engine, your finisher can be any move you want, from a punch, to a strong grapple move to a taunt. Also, with each physically demanding move you do, your unseen breath meter will go down. You can see your fighter breathing more and more heavily as this meter drops. To make it go back up, you must find a place where you can rest and hold L, the breath button. If you don't you can run the risk of being momentarily parylized, which isn't fun. Grappple moves take extreme precision to pull off. You must tell your fighter to do a move exactly when the fighters' hands touch each other's shoulders, or you run the risk of having a move performed on you. You can set CPU precision from 1-10 at the beggining a match.

The Edit mode is fantastic as well. I have made extremely accurate edits of superheros Wolverine and The Incredible Hulk as well as some favorite wrestlers from Perry Saturn to King Kong Bundy.

There are many modes of play available. You can chose a single Exhibition match as a tag team, single or handicap match. There are Electrified Steel Cage C4 Explosion Death Matches, which are what they sound like, Gruesome matches, which take place inside UFC octagon cages and Battle Royals which have four men competing against each other in the same ring at the same time. Despite the bloody sounding matches, this game is hardly graphic and in my opinion deserving of an E rating. There are also Survivor Series like matchups, tournaments, 64 man leagues, and the meat of the game, the Audience match. Players chose a style of wrestling and a wrestler and try to wrestle an exciting match in that style. The Audience is trained to like the style you chose, and once the match is done, they rate the match. If it wasn't exciting enough for them, you have to try again. Wrestlers are unlocked this way, in each of the styles.

All in all, Fire Pro Wrestling is well worth the money, and if you're any kind of wrestling fan with patience for a learning curve, you'll spend hours and hours on this one.

not to shabby but the graphics- EWWWWWW!

FIre pro wrestling is a very fun, very hard game with great sound and above average game play. It was one of the first releases for the original game boy advance. The character creator is great and is actually better then most of the N64 wrestling characte creators. the bad news is, the graphics look like ... and once a match starts, the only way to stop it is to win, lose, or turn off your gameboy. ONe of the coolest things to do is to set the # of player to 0 and then watch the match like a TV show. half the time the wreastlers only grapple though if you are using created wrestlers. over all:
- Gameplay 5/6
- Graphics 3/6
- Sound 6/6
- Replayability 4/6
final score: 18/24 = B-
