Pokemon Master in Training!

I'm a first time GameBoy owner and I found this game to be pretty impressive given the limitations of the GameBoys power. I have Pokemon Stadium for N64 which is outstanding and found that without Pokemon raised in the Red, Blue or Yellow games that you can only get so far. I resisted buying a GameBoy just to play the N64 game better but now I'm glad I did. I haven't played Pokemon Red or Blue but Yellow is simply a better version of both from what I've read. The graphics (especially the battles) are very good given the before mentioned limitations. I would say it is original Nintendo 8-bit Game system quality. The sound is as good as possible given the tiny speaker and fits right in with the N64 game and the cartoon series. The gameplay itself is very absorbing and easy to pickup. I'm a novice but I can see where I'll be playing this game for quite awhile accumulating Pokemon I can export into my N64 game. The only criticism I have is the fact that you almost have to have both game systems to enjoy the Pokemon games, although they are very fun as stand alone products. You also have to have the Red, Blue and Yellow games to collect all the Pokemon as there is a handful missing from each game. For example, there are 12 of 150 missing from each version. I recommend this game highly however. Now go "catch 'em all!"

Better than Red and Blue

If you're going to buy one of the three, I would recommend this one. Even if you have played Red or Blue, I would still buy it, if you want to play another Pokemon game (also consider Gold, Silver, Crystal, of course). Yellow doesn't enjoy some of the upgrades that G/S have, but it does have its advantages. You start out with Pikachu, and Pikachu follows you everywhere unless it is fainted or you don't have it with you (but that's not a good idea because it hates being in the computer). You can talk to Pikachu to check on its mood, and it will vocalize. So if you like Pikachu, this is the version for you. In other games, you can't catch Pikachu very early in the game. When I first played another version, it was very odd not to have Pikachu following me around. Anyway, another advantage of Yellow is that you can obtain all THREE of the Red/Blue starter pokemon in a single game, without trading or resetting in any way. Just make sure Pikachu is happy and people will give them to you along the way. Also, the graphics in this game are much better in my opinion than the graphics in R/B. The graphics were probably influenced by the anime, as the storyline was in regards to Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. It is a great improvement in my opinion.

Summary: Get Pikachu fast, it talks, it looks cute. Get all the starter Pokemon without resetting or trading. Better graphics than Red or Blue.

Pokemon is a very popular TV series, video game, trading card game, and about everything else! I didn't expect much more than total boredom, but this game is a lot more than it looks. More than 20 different locations to explore, 50 technical machines (TMs), 5 hidden machines (HMs), and more than 150 Pokemon. You can dig, swim, fly, and even cut through trees! More than 100 people to battle, talk to, get gifts or trade with, and get hints. You can buy, recieve, and find more than 75 items, even invisible ones! You can catch over 25 wild Pokemon, but you have to trade, recieve, buy, and metamorph (evolve) some. You start out with a Pikachu that you can talk to. It can get from REALLY mad to having hearts all around its head! The fighting is really ungorey, and you can turn the animation to the battles off so you just hear 'BUMP!' There are tons of secrets in the game. You can even nickname or rename Pokemon and go to a hospital for Pokemon for free. You should buy this game, unless you want to wait until Gold and Silver come out. They have the new Pokemon up to 250. I still think that's too many.

Pokemon 1.5. An updated version of the first games in the Pokemon series.

The Pokemon series is a strange one, indeed. For years, it was a phenomenon in Japan, but Nintendo strangely delayed on bringing the series to America. After a few years, Nintendo finally took a gamble and imported the first game of the series, Pokemon 1 for the Game Boy, to America. The game was available in two versions, Red and Blue, at its 1998 release. Less than a year later, Pokemon 1.5, Yellow, would get an American release. Although the games started out relatively unknown in America, they became an phenomenon overnight, much like they had in Japan. How does Pokemon 1.5 measure up? Read on for my review.

PROS:
-THE GREATEST STRENGTH HERE IS ORIGINALITY. Nintendo has long been a master of innovations and trying new things, and this game demonstrates it beautifully. Only Nintendo could find a way to market RPGs to the masses.
-THIS GAME WILL APPEAL TO PRETTY MUCH ANY VIDEO GAMER, WHETHER YOU LIKE POKEMON OR NOT. At first glance, this looks like a children's game. Looks are deceiving. Give it a try, and before long, you'll soon find yourself in a large world filled with depth, creatures, a storyline, and a collecting element that was unsurpassed at its time of release in Japan and America alike. Even if you hate the Pokemon TV series (and I know I do), you may end up loving this game. It's NOT just for kids. I was born on August 17, 1984, and I can honestly say that I LOVE this game.
-THE GAME FORCES YOU TO TAKE STRATEGY INTO ACCOUNT. There are different types of monsters scattered across the world, all of which cover different types. Different types are strong against and weak against other types (for instance, a water creature can defeat a fire creature easily, but a grass creature can easily defeat a water one.) You also must continually level up your creatures, and make sure to level them up evenly - failure to do so can create problems later in the game (as I found out the first time I played.)
-IF YOU'RE NEW TO THE GENRE OF ROLE PLAYING GAMES, THIS IS A GREAT INTRODUCTION. RPGs are generally fun games, but they're extremely complex and tough to learn. That's not the case here. The gameplay is extremely easy to learn, even if you've never played an RPG before in your life.
-THE SHEER VARIETY OF CREATURES IS IMPRESSIVE. There are fifteen main types of creatures (grass, water, fire, etc.), and tons of creatures within each type, and even a few hybrid types. The appearances of the creatures also vary greatly. You've got cutesy monsters (Clefairy, Jigglypuff, Chansey) as well as tough-looking ones (Golem, Machamp, Nidoking.) They say variety is the spice of life - and this game is living proof.
-YOU CAN SAVE THE GAME ANYWHERE, ANYTIME OUTSIDE OF BATTLE. This feature that many RPGs lack makes this an excellent travel game.
-IT'S OUT OF PRINT, AND CAN BE PURCHASED AT A USED GAMES STORE FOR A GOOD PRICE. If you're looking for fun but you're on a budget, you can't lose here.
-YELLOW VERSION IMPROVES OVER RED AND BLUE. This version of the game has better graphics in many places, a few new events, and even a "make Pikachu happy" system that will reward you in many ways.

CONS:
-IN MANY ASPECTS, THIS GAME WAS ALREADY OUTDATED WHEN IT GOT ITS NORTH AMERICAN RELEASE. The game was already THREE YEARS old when it arrived in America. The dated graphics in combat stand as solid proof of this. By the time the game got to America, better games had already arrived overseas.
-LATER ENTRIES IN THE SERIES PUT THIS ONE TO SHAME. Pokemon 2, which didn't make it to America until nearly two years after this game, puts this entry to shame. Even Pokemon 1.5 (released less than a year after this game) was an improvement in many ways.
-THE GAME GETS A BAD RAP FOR MANY REASONS. The TV series is horrible, and many people instantly judge the game based on it (NOT smart.) I urge you give this game a chance - DO NOT judge it without playing it.
-THE GAME IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE NEW GAME BOY ADVANCE POKEMON RPGS. Accordingly, you may want to shell out the extra cash and get one of them instead.
-NOT ENOUGH IMPROVEMENTS OVER THE EARLIER GAMES. I recommend getting this game over Red or Blue, but if you already have one or the other, it's not worth shelling out the extra cash.

OVERALL:
Although this game is dated, it's still a damn fine classic Game Boy RPG. And since it's out of print now, consider stopping by your local used video games store and picking up a copy. If you're an RPG fan, you won't regret purchasing this.

"Pokemon Yellow Special Pikachu Edition" is worth the price.

About a year ago, I too was drawn into the Pokemon fad. I played Pokemon Red a little bit when one of my friends came over. I enjoyed it, but it seemed a bit complicated. I finally got version yellow. The hardest part of the game is at the beginning. (But I won't tell you why >:) .) Anyways, once you get past that part, the rest is of average difficulty for a game. Graphics are par for the GBC, and the battle scenes are cool. Sound is great, and the amount of different sounds puts me in awe. Now that I'm over the Pokemon craze, I see that it is not quite a five-star game, but still worth four stars.

Yellow: the best game of the Poke'mon Saga

These are some great things about Yellow:

1: You can get all of the 3 starting Poke'mon.

2: You can get a Machoke from an in-game trade, but it evoloves to a Machamp after you trade with a girl in Route 5

3: Dragoniar, Pidgeiotto and Venomoth are some of the wild poke'mon you'll find.

4: Cathing both Scyther and Pinsir or Arcainine and Ninetales will be a snap.

Bad things about Yellow:

1: 13 Poke'mon you'll have to trade from Red or Blue.

2: Gym leader's poke'mon are at higher levels.

3: Barely there is any poision types that are wild.

4: Not much In-game trading.

Overall: 4 and a half stars

POKEMON YELLOW- IF YOU LIKED POKEMON BLUE AND RED OR IF THIS IS YOUR FIRST POKEMON GAME AND YOU EITHER LIKE POKEMON OR ARE JUST TRYING IT, THIS IS THE GAME FOR YOU. IT IS BETTER THAN RED AND BLUE. IT FOLLOWS THE SHOW MORE. SO IF YOU LIKE POKEMON I RECOMMEND THIS GAME. IT'S JAMMIN-BY: JUSTIN

Okay, but it's an obvious repeat

Being an owner of Pokemon Red, I had hoped that there would be more to Pokemon Yellow. Okay, it's great what they've done to the Pokedex and I love how they changed the storyline to be closer to the TV show, but...it's the same! Also, I had hoped that you could choose to be a guy or girl (of course that was a rumour...) and you have to have...Pikachu. It's cute for a while, but unlike many others, I am not a Pikachu fan. If you could choose between it and some other well-liked Pokemon, that would be okay, but I'm afraid Pikachu isn't that useful (At least if I had Bulbasaur I could defeat Brock instead of having to get more Pokemon faster). Also, in order to do the special battles, you have to have a friend with Pokemon Yellow. My friend has Blue (it didn't work). No offense to anyone who loved the game (and there seems to be a lot), but I only recommend this game to new-comers and die-hard Pikachu fans.

Pokemon Yellow

Pokemon Yellow is about the same as Blue and Red but yellow can be played in color, Jesse and James are featured, gym leaders have stronger pokemons, the pokemons look differet, and they're more two player options. If you already have blue or red, then I don't recommend you wasting your money on it (like me) and because pokemon gold and silver is coming out. The game has the same story line as blue or red but it follows the T.V. show closer than both of those. You start off with Pikachu and Gary has Eevee. Everything else other than that are the same as blue and red. So if you have blue or red, than I recommend you saving your money for Pokemon Stadium, Silver, and Gold. But if you don't have blue or red than Pokemon Yellow is a must have.
