Great Game, But...

I bought this game because I am a huge fan of Railroad Tycoon. This game has excellant graphics and real-world terrain and situations. It's one of the best real-life simulation game I've ever seen. Plus it has all of the most well known locomotives and train cars since the beginning of the train industry.
Unfortunately, you cannot drive the trains in the game. You can only set up their schedule of stops. I was hoping that it would be able to control the trains in sort of a free-style mode, but unfortunately this is not possible.
Although it has great graphics, sometimes the train tracks connect but they don't appear to connect in the game. Also, there is no way to cross tracks without a bridge over top of them, which is both expensive as can be and also slows down your trains. So, it's not exactly reality.
Also, the free loco-comotion game that was included on the CD is by far the most boring and useless demo I've ever tried. It's so bad I won't even waste my time explaining how useless and dumb it is.
All in all, it's a good game that's both challenging and educational, but you have quite limited control of the train movements.
Didn't like as much a RT2

I had a hard time with this game, after playing RT2 to death, which I loved....couldn't easily grasp the differences and frankly didn't have the time anymore to learn the nuances....I've moved on to Sid Meir's (original creator of RT) Civilization III.
A nice game

Greetings,
I bought that game because I played Transport Tycoon about 10 years ago. I thought it was the direct descendant of it. Obviously, it is not.
People mentionned that game is complicated. it is not. It took me one week to master the game and now I can't lose on any map or any difficulties. The game is fun to play and the learning curve is really easy. But there are very few things to do:
- Build tracks
- Establish some routes and chose/upgrade locos
- Move goods from low to high avalability
- Build buildings (rail stations, hotels, taverns, etc)
- Buy businesses
- Borrow money or issue shares
- Buy or sell shares
The difficulty is the order you do that or where do you lay out your tracks.
That is all! Nothing more. Transport Tycoon was more complicated because it included trucks and planes with the train.
Thank you

So, you think that all those other games you bought kept you busy? Think of RR3 as the "BOSS" of games. The creators of this game have evolved 110% ahead of the competition. The Sandbox mode allows you to play for hours (I am not kidding!!) and the challenges will make you want more every time. You'll need a amazing processor for this game. Unlike RR2 you'll go into movie mode and remember all those times in RR2 where you had to manually do stuff? RR3 does it all for you. If you like games than this one is one to own, you'll never regret the purchase you'll just want more time off from your job to play!!!-Enjoy.

I've been a big fan of the Roller Coaster Tycoon games, in which the gameplay is centered on the fun of developing an amusement park and getting to see the rides in action, with the business-oriented "goals" for each scenario being kind of an afterthought. If you failed to meet the goals in time, it was still fun to design the park itself.
This was my first Railroad Tycoon game, so perhaps this was just my misconception to expect the same idea. I imagined it would be like designing one of those miniature model train sets in your basement, and getting to watch the trains travel through minature towns, through mountains, over bridges, etc. Frustratingly, the game has almost nothing to do with this; it is barely a model train simulation, but rather, it is almost strictly a business simulation. The gameplay focusses heavily on raising funds via issuing stocks, or bonds; investing in stocks, determining which goods to have your trains pick up in which amounts at which stations, checking and rechecking investment portfolios and ledgers with profits minus expenses, etc. There is very little room for imagination in track design (why pay more than the shortest track between any two points?). The lanscapes are a little bleak and monotonous. Again, picture the opposite gameplay of Sid Meyer's Golf Sim, where the business aspect of the game takes a back seat to the fun of designing your own course, watching sim players play on it, and even being able to test out the course yourself. Here, I felt more like I was taking a required tutorial CD for Econ 101.

Quite simply, this game is still replayable four years after my original purchase.
For those who love the Railroad Tycoon series, this is one of those rare sequels that simply do not disappoint. Railroad Tycoon 3 improves upon one of the greatest games ever in a way that is truly astounding.
My biggest dislike about Railroad Tycoon 2 was the amount of micromanagement that was necessary in order to keep a large railroad empire running. That micromanagement is gone in RRT3, but for those who liked specifying exactly which cargo to put on each train, that option is still available.
The graphics are greatly upgraded, as is the game engine. Quite simply, this game just never gets tiring. Four years later, it is still one of the greatest games on the market.

It is very fun but hard. I had to take my time to learn how it worked, but once I did, it was lots of fun. I play it all the time.
Great game, but not a simulation.

I have enjoyed playing this game for what it is worth, but it doesn't fullfill my sim needs. It is still a very enjoyable game but is definitely targeted to a broader audience, including children. There are a lot of very unrealistic things that happen while playing, such as trains going through each other and becoming invisible at stations (this is in the second RRtycoon as well) and trains moving WAY too fast, even if the game speed is lowered. It's pretty funny to watch a train going over 100mph go over a mountain in a couple seconds and somehow still be on the track.
As far as the business part of it, it's definitely a simulation. Anything from using the stock market to running your opponent bankrupt will soothe the burn of the outdated graphics and whacked out physics if you are into business sims.
I still recommend this game because of its very high replay value and the fact that it is just fun.

Railroad Tyvoon 3 is a great game. When playnig it you need a lot of skill, patience, and a good stradgedy. The game is very complicated but when there is a will there is a way. You can play trains from the begining of the first time trains were used or be trains in the future. This game is a total yes. If you have a Mac then type in Railroad Tycoon 3 for Macintosh and you will get a version for your Mac. Still I recomend this game.
I hope you by this game
P.S. Please do not mind my spelling.
