Not as much fun as I thought it would be!!!

This game I guess is alittle too indepth for me. Too complicated, and when your trying to get it started, you seem to run out of money too fast. You never know if you have people on your trains or not, you don't ever see people, and that is something I was hoping for. My most favorite tycoon game of all time is Zoo Tycoon Complete Collection...the graphics are the best, and you can see the people no problem. I think I had myself alittle too excited for RT3, and got let down. Overall, I think it was just alittle too complicated....heck, I even let my older brother play it, who happens to be a tycoon nut, and he didn't even care for it, and he's 32.
I was also hoping that is was something that my kids would enjoy playing, but it's not even something they would understand or enjoy..my son hates it. It's just too advanced for kids....and maybe even alittle for adults. I think if you are a savy business person, then you would probobly love this game, but I am not, and that is where my problem comes in....Oh well....

You might even learn something...

I have not played the earlier versions of Railroad Tycoon, so can not compare, but RT3 is not only fun, its an education. You really get to know the geography and topography of a region that may be a little fuzzy in your head before you play it.

A strategy game focused on transportation, geography, topography, ecomomic development and playing the stock market may sound a little dry (like a really boring grade school Social Studies class)but its really very entertaining and interesting. Frankly I didn't know, and didn't think I wanted to know about buying stock on margin and selling short before I started this game, but because I want to win I sure know about them now.

In the first Midwestern champaign, does Chicago grow like gangbusters because the game designers program it to do so, or just because of its position on the map and its conditions(for instance it has a port on Lake Michigan that leads to the Atlantic)? If the latter is the case then that's very good design indeed.

My only complaint is that they should really make the game more realistic by adding signals and two way traffic. As it is the trains make 180 degree turns at depots and run through each other when they pass. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this game, in fact I think I'll play it now.

Better than Sid Meier's Railroads?

This game is completely different from RT 2 and Sid's Railroads (the sequel to RT3). The supply & demand economy is complicated and realistic. For example, nobody will ship on your railroad if it's cheaper to transport it on the rivers. There are plenty of different cargo types and buildings, and unlike RT2, it is very profitable to run smart freight lines.

This game is difficult, and requires a lot of thought, whereas Sid's Railroads is simple, quick, and arcade-like. Sid Meier's Railroads is good, but if you want the true Tycoon game, I would highly recommend buying this.[...]

RT3 is by far the best in the Railroad Tycoon series.
This game is visually stunning and has really challenged
me in the past couple days...and nights. I have had
absolutely no problem with the install or copy
protection that some reviewers speak of. Finally a
game I can sit down with the kids and play.

Great 3D engine...insane ecomony

Wow! Be prepared to jump onto the forums and start your education. The economy is a total 108 from RT2. The learning curve can be very steep. You can start playing within minutes. But I've been playing for 5 days now and I still cannot grasp the economy. The manual does not explain it well. Fortunately there are a lot of people discussig it online and you can pickup tips there. Enjoy.

Railroad Tycoon 3 Reviewed After A Month

This is a strategy game that involves building a railroad empire while playing the 19th/20th century stock market to your greedy advantage. The graphics are pretty good, the campaign/scenarios are fun the first time, and the economy simulation is honestly the best I've ever seen. After I completed the campaign and finished the scenarios though, I got bored of it. Once you master the complexities of this game you'll see that the seeded economy isn't all that great at providing a unique game each time. To be honest though, this is the best tycoon game I've played yet...and unfortunately I've been suckered into playing many of them.

Out of 5 (5 being the highest):

Just a last-minute note: You'll need to know some basics about how the stock market works to be successful at this game. It's nothing difficult though.

Great game

This is a really great game for a railroad "sim". I highly recommend it for anyone with an interest in railroads or financial type "sims" or model trains. The game has excellent graphics, however once you get a lot of trains going at once (100+) it starts to slow down alot, and I have a fast computer (3 Ghz). However, I wouldn't let this stop me from buying this excellent game, as you can lower the graphic resolution and improve game play. I was successful playing it even on a 400 Mhz celereon.

It is a very interesting train game that I enjoy playing again and again so it was well worth the money.

Doesn't have map of US!

Nice graphics and sound. However, the game doesn't even include a map of the US! The stock market is the same cretin style stock market of the previous game (no matter how much money you have, you can't buy stock from other players). The last and most serious problem is track laying & station placement. There is no un-do. If you make an error (which is easy to do with the weird station placement algorithm), you have to endure a lengthy recreation of the map and reloading all the databases to restore the map. Most games end quickly in frustration.

Not even close to the original

A Great Disappointment. As a huge fan of all the previous Railroad games I couldn't wait for #3 to come out. Good graphics and nothing else. They took a classic strategy game and made it into a boring sim.

train lover's heaven

RRT 3 on computer is terrific. Graphics are lovely (a bit like a model train set) and multitude of options are fantastic. The zooming function is great, allowing you to see the trains from all angles and see where the train is going.

This game is a great way to get students interested in geography, history, science/technology, and business. Great for students of all ages. If you're young and interested in how our society developed, this game provides some answers. If you're older, this game gives some reminders of the past. The game can be as easy or as hard as you want.
