Civilization LITE

Hopefully someone out there will give a much better review than I am prepared to at the moment, but I did want to put this up as a warning to anyone considering purchasing this game who may be a fan of the Civilization franchise.
The new revisioned Revolution robs the game of so much of what I enjoy in each subsequent Civilization release, by scaling back on the leaders you, technologies, units, buildings, religions, civs, and many other features that you can choose. Less detail is put into building your culture, gold, and happiness as well. The new Revolution streamlines the game for a new audience that may not have enjoyed the detail that went into successfuly navigating through any of the trials and tribulations of the preceding Civilization games.
In articles and adds I had read before the game launched, much was made about the reboot, making use of the next generation gaming possibilities. It may have done so by opening itself up to better online play, but certainly not in the presentation. Sure maybe the graphics and sound are a slight step up from previous versions, but to say they are utilizing the possibilities of PS3 is absurd. The world leader animation looks sticky at times and their detail is nothing to rave about. The in game sound is crisp, but there is nothing exciting about hearing your advisors and other leaders mumble gibberish in fake exotic tongues.
Maybe the new style Firaxis is banking on will reach a new audience, but if they continue to go this direction with the franchise... they've lost me.

Would be great, but ends before you can finish a game!

This would be a great game, it's a lot of fun to play, except for one HUGE problem. The game just ends, before you can actually finish a game. You will be playing a fun game, then out of the blue you will get a message saying the game will end in 5 turns, and then it ends. It's like playing a NASCAR race game for a 20 lap race, and then after 17 laps the game just says 'sorry, the game is over, you were in 3rd place on lap 17, you will never know how you would have finished'.

And even if you manage to reach a victory condition, the game just ends. You can not finish advancing the civilization.

So until they fix this huge bug and allow you to play as long as you want (and many others have brought this up) the game is totally worthless. And this is really annoying as the game would be great otherwise.

Too short and fast.

I liked the streamlined interface, but they took too much out. Also the game doesn't last long enough and is a bit too easy. I'll return this and go back to my good old PC based Civ 3.

Civilization:Revolution - not for fans of the PC version

I guess I should have read reviews on this product before purchasing it. Any assumption I made that any company that would place such a well known product on the market would take advantage of the power of the Playstation 3, and live up to the reputation of Sid Meier, the game I have played on a PC or MAC for the last decade, was completely and totally wrong. As it regards game play, it is way too easy to win compared to the PC version, and represented no challenge whatsoever.

I think the most annoying part of the game are the Advisers - they chirp with this shrill high-pitched garble. I mentioned this to my friends and colleagues... and those who like the game mention that they still have to turn the sound down, or just off.

The expectations represented by the franchise, the power of the PS3, the lame gameplay, the cartoonish characterurization (as in characature, not character), the incredibly annoying "speech", represent one of my greatest disappointments I have experienced in a game in many many years.

Is that all I get!

I realize this was a scaled down version. But comon this game is horrible. I paid 60 bucks and this is all I get? Extremely dissapointed in this PS3 game. I think I am going to sell it. In fact this game should be a poster child for a reason to wait a few weeks before purchasing. I agree this si good for kida and such as well as those that never have played Civilization. For anyone who has played the PC game this is a huge let down.

I understand there will be plenty of those that like this game. My advice go buy Civilization 4 on PC.

Very sad...

I so wanted to like this game, been a Civ fan for years. I've been trying to like it for two weeks now, but it is horrible. Poor game play, insipid and annoying. Not really Civ at all... it's more like a description of Civ given by Ritalin deprived forth grader as a book report, except a forth grader would imagine better game play. Also, $60 for this... really?! A very sad turn for Civ.

not good

I agree with other people that this game is the worst aspects of the PC version with none of the good ones. It has nothing new and is frustrating to play. The PC version that came out years ago was hand above this.

Disappointed

I've been playing civilization for as long as I can remember. This is my first console version. I'm pretty disappointed with it. The graphics are cool and such, but the games are so fast. There's no marathon settings where the years crawl by. Instead, at about a half hour in its already the middle ages. Additionally, there are few option to toggle on and off. The advisors interrupt incessantly, you don't control the workers, there are significantly fewer military unit options, and the maps are much smaller. For a game that is constantly putting out better versions and award winning expansions, I really expected alot more. For being the most expensive civilization game i've ever purchased, its definately the least impressive.

CIV4 fan Disappointed with Revolution

I was very excited to see the CIV game for PS3. I would really prefer to have the games I play start to convert over to a platform like PS3. Tired of spending $3k every few years for a new PC.

Regarding the game, I was really excited as I stated previously about getting the game. However, the game play to me was very difficult to manage. I am sure some of the issues are with my lack of knowledge on how to work the game on a PS3 as I am new to this platform (bought it for blueray movies for themost part).

I could not find an auto explore function to work. I found it very tedious to have to explicity move my boats and explores around manually. I would prefer that they auto explore while I focus on building and organizing troops.

Secondly I could stack trooops into armies (3 troops = 1 army) but I could not create large stacks of armies and have them attack as a single unit. I had to manaully launch each group one at a time.

The image presentation although clean and crisp was a bit to cartoonish for me. I was expecting something more along the lines of Command and Concur I guess.

The over all game play was a struggle for me, maybe if I could find and read an indepth howto guide I could enjoy this game a lot more. The little book they sent with the game barely had the basics covered.

So I think this is a $19.95 value game selling for $60. I hope the issues are with me and that over time I will learn how to play the game on the PS3 better.

OK game but not great

If you like civilization you will like this maybe even love it, but don't get your hopes up this isn't much more than a port of the PC version of the game. The biggest drawback is the game play was not significantly improved for use with a console controller... Its a bit awkward and ineffective to more around the map and move troops. The game was also full of graphical glitches this was truly unacceptable, it also ran surprisingly slow. Very annoying. The graphics were ok and I expected much better for a PS3 Game. The sound design could have been better as well.... The more I write this review the more I realize how many issues I had with the game....
