Don't listen to them!

I really think some should say this game is bad but if your basing this on multiplayer you will be let down. Single player is awsome and that's where it should be. I do not like lag heads saying it's bad because they can't get satisfied with the online play...and Doom 3 has the fear factor but not the excitment and structure as the single player in Quake has. You also feel part of a team instead of Rambo style which I can't stand neither. Graphics are awsome and the guys that say they are not as good as Doom need to get their eyes seriously checked. Don't listen to them becaue they are talking about the bad backgrounds outside of the Strogg base which are bad. But Doom 3 engine was never meant to drawl good graphics that far! That's why everything in Doom 3 looked great and did you notice lack of outdoor levels? Duh? Anyway, I did my homework on this game and I have played HL2, DM 3(not resurection though)and have more experience with FPS's than these clown heads. Listen to me, it's worth the single player story and then some, the multiplayer in bad based on today's standards but I hate MP gaming because it's useless. No structure and just a bunch of spoiled teenagers or adults running and gunning. Stupid no point to it. Now Day of Defeat can be different sometimes. If you get compitent people on there.

WHOA! Hold up! This is NOT aDOOM clone!

Whoa! Some folks are comparing this to DOOM! No way! Firstly, the AI is much improved. You aren't stuck in constant corridors where the AI doesn't have to have a brain. It just has to 'be' right in front of you, and come at you.
Not so here. I have actually watched the enemy AI step away and hide behind a pole until i passed the pole and shoot me in the back! You gotta keep your eyes on this one.
Of course, it can be a system hog. I have a P4 3200 + 1 GIG DDR RAM + 256 MB DDR PCI EXPRESS ATI VIDEO + SOUND BLASTER AUDIO. With those specs, i got a REALLY sweet framerate that hardly dropped under 75 fpm. That with a 1024X768 screen setting and *MOST* features cranked. I was glad they alowed key binding to be changeable, and that they included the save anytime feature also. NO FREAKIN' CHECKPOINTS! I see minor comparisons to HALO and DOOM and even F.E.A.R. But, not so much that the game feels derivative. I thought the graphics were sweet at the settings i chose. And, the weapons sound incredible. You can almost smell the gunpowder. This is worth every penny.

Quake 4: Just as reliable as prior versions.

There have been many games that I have played that have taken my breath away, but not one that continues to do so with every single frame: This game is without a doubt the most intense FPS I have played in a long time.

You keep hearing people go on and on about Half-Life 2: A game that requires you to go online to play the single player (what why).

I haven't the foggiest what people see in that game other than the fact it was a wonderous project, but it had one flaw: It was a linear game. Go to this room, go to the next room, and don't go back and don't go to any of these other rooms or buildings or anything like that because we didn't make it... ugh. I loved the game, don't get me wrong, but there are flaws in such a linear setup. Quake 4 is linear as well, but as soon as that draws to a close, you're playing multiplayer on any of the old / new maps they've put on there, and you're having a good time all over again.

The single player is wonderful, with a great story and a great engrossing pace. Nothing is too difficult, but nothing is to easy. The sound on this game is great, so long as your sound card is OpenAI compliant, and if you have a decent machine (i'm running an athlon xp 2600 w/ 1gig of ram and a nvidia geforce 6600 w/256 meg), you'll do fine. In fact, I'm running it with everything on, and it takes a second to load, but once it does, OH GOD I MADE A MESS: it's gorgeous... wow. Without a doubt, the most creepy, horrific experience I've had in a FPS without being frightened in a long time.

I mentioned previously that the game was fast: that's an understatement: This game is REALLY fast. It's pace is beyond that of any other game I've played recently, and wow: it's amazing that such a pretty game can move so quickly.

I've been playing it since I got it at roughly 11 am Tuesday, October 18th, and man, I went through more chips and caffine by myself than I would at a network party.

I would say that the graphics are great, but that's an understatement. The graphics are nigh perfect... I'm in love with the engine, and just how they've made quake it's own game, and not borrowed anything from doom at all, really. This game has it's own look, feel, heck, it has it's own ecosystem, it seems.

The AI is also GREAT. I was decending a stairwell on one of the levels, and there are all these barrels, explosive mind you, that I could push down the stairs... OH man, now that was a trip. They kept trying to get away, and I kept knocking them down, and man, it was wicked; they kept trying to get away, and I kept chasing them with explosive barrels... The room actually took me a few times to get down, but once I did, OH MAN... that was the coooooolest thing ever.

I don't know how much of a fan you guys are of this series, but it's a must-have for anyone who has enjoyed a previous John Carmack game, because he, yet again, delivers.

I would reccommend this to anyone who asked me about it for three reasons:

A) graphics.

2) sound.

D) environments.

Yes, it's a good game. I am flabberghasted that no one has reviewed this before me, but I do know that I will be playing it again when I get home. OH YEAH, I will be playing this until I can't play it anymore, and then I will get online and KILL YALL. oH YEAH.

good game.

To other reviewers: Reserve judgement till you finish the game. It just gets better and better.

For the rest of you:

****Warning**** Some spoilers below.

Gameplay: The gameplay is fairly basic but still loads of fun. There is some prudence needed on your part, you can't just run and gun all the time and expect to get through.

Weapons: The weapons upgrade is a great idea. Even your weaker weapons at the beginning of the game can be used later in the game for more punch. And they are all useful. The machine gun is great to snipe enemies at a moderate distance. The nail gun is my favorite (especially later in the game). I wish the railgun and the BFG was more powerful though. And I did not like that the railgun has to be reloaded after 3 shots, especially since there is a charging time.

Enemies: This is one of my favorite elements of the game. The enemies are just amazing to watch. They have brought back the Gunner, Beserker, Gladiator, etc. with excellent detail. I wish they didn't disappear after they are dead. So sometimes I get myself killed just so I can get a better look at them. The AI maybe lacking a bit, but that is easily forgiven because of the damage these enemies can do at the harder settings. The bosses are a sight to behold.

Level Design: Amazing, detailed, probably the best I have seen in an FPS. You should upgrade your PC if you haven't done already, it is worth the experience.

Sound: The game sounds are absolutely incredible. The weapons sound very convincing. There is always some chugging and whirring in the background to immerse you in the industrial strogg atmosphere. Do yourself a favor and turn the volume up. The only weak point is the music, the score could have been a lot better (Halo raised the bar a little too high for me, unfortunately).

Kudos to Id and Raven for a spectacular game. We want more! Bring on the expansion packs! I can't wait 6 years for another sequel.

What a pleasure

If you enjoyed Doom 3..You will love the single player mode in this one also. I was saddened when the game came to a end. I wanted more. I have been looking everywhere for add on single player maps, but there isn't many. I can't say anything about online play, because I have never tried it. But single player is worth the price of the game. It will play pretty well on a Emachine also.

More like Halo than Doom.

Doom 3 is my favorite FPS of all time, due to the atmosphere and total immersion. Quake is nothing like this. Half Life 2 was good if you like long stretches of boredom with small spurts of easy combat. Quake is better than this. While I had hoped Quake 4 would be based on the original Quake, a game which was the Doom 3 of its time as far as scary atmosphere, and the Counterstrike of its time as far as multiplayer, Quake 2 served as a suitable base for the game.

Quake is an action game, pure and simple. It is very immersive in the war against the Strogg, and reminds me a lot of a more adult, mature, and bloody halo. Lots of Baddies, great vehicles, linear, and even better weapons. The storyline is good enough, with some twists here and there. People love to whine about the AI, well you dont need good AI when you have like 5 ppl attacking at once from different directions. Whats the point? Your squadmates have the best AI I've ever seen.

Graphics are unbelievable if you have a good system, but there is no darkness to hide the flaws if you have a mediocre system. Doom 3 runs much better than Quake.

Multiplayer is a quake 3 clone + lag, dont buy it for that. Half life 2's engine is so much better for multiplayer.

So if you like an overrated doom 3 clone system hog with japanese-style horror over the red white and blue gore of ID software, buy F.E.A.R. If you like non linear games, buy Far Cry. If you like boring puzzle games that mix shooting with Tetris, but Half Life 2. And if you like Halo style action + a hard edge, buy Quake 4.

The Game for all those Doom lovers who are now afraid of the dark!

For all those who loved the grapics of Doom 3 but hated the tedious and endless hallways of demons and darkness this game is for you. Quake 4 brings in all the elements of Doom that you loved graphics, guns, voice acting and left the rest out. Darkness is no longer your enemy and tacital situations have been added thet ge rid of the runnin gun feel of Doom. Not to mention that you now work in squads sometimes, which is nice when you need backup or human contact (They wont' turn into zombies either). On a slightly different note those with weak stomachs ought to be wary of the wall decorations, not blood (This has far less than Doom 3 so that previous reviewer doesn't know what he's talking about) but of a slighly more gruesome nature. Although I beleve that it adds to the gameplay giving you an idea of what your really fighting against.

Warning to those who are lanners this game is not ment for you, the MP seems as though it was drug out of the gutter added a new coat of paint. Those looking for a new MP experence other than the traditional deathmatch should look elsware. However those who are looking for a great single player that is easily replayable good luck and have fun Raven has given yu something to enjoy.

This is the game Doom 3 should have been, no pda's to pick up, no fiddling with the flashlight, just run, shoot, wet your pants, repeat. New generation graphics with "old school" FPS action, got to love it.

Ok well first of all i just have to say that i have played both doom 3 and quake 4. quake 4 owns doom 3 and ill tell you why. first of all doom does have fantastic graphics, but really nothing else. the entire doom game is repetive. ur in a building the whole time and this is really agriavting and boring. Quake for being made by mostly the same guys, also brings graphics that match doom's and is suprisingly similar but quake takes the good things that doom had and left behind all the bad that came with doom. so basically it is better, or an improvement on doom.
Quake 4 allows u to use weapons and vehicles and takes place in many different areas, such as indoor facilities and outdoor wastelands. quake 4 also has terrific AI that i was extremely impressed with. i havent beaten the game but there is supposed to be large scale warefare as well as small encounters. Quake 4 also doesnt get boring at all, unlike doom did very quickly. i Also hear the the multiplayer,(which is online), is fantastic. that alone should be worth your fifty. although there is one thing; if enjoy being scared, doom does a better job at it than quake, but then again, thats all that it does better than quake.
