Mario Kart Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

My family and I have owned every Mario Kart made and we are not disappointed with the new Mario Kart for Wii. Our T.V. hasn't been on for anything other than to play Mario Kart for the last couple of weeks. I like that it has so many tracks and our 9 year old loves that the retro tracks are on there. I am addicted to the on line play. Came in first for the first time last night ( I said I love the game not that I'm good at it ).

I was also very glad that they made it a bit harder to get all the extras. No more playing it for one night and getting all the goodies. So we should get lots more play time out of it before we erase it and start over again.

Only a mushroom worth of improvement, not the gold mushroom I was hoping for

Being a series fan since the original SNES title, I had very high hopes for the Wii version. Nintendo did some things well, and severely missed the mark in other areas. For ease of reading, I'll just list my pros & cons in bullet format.

PROS:
1) 32 different tracks gives plenty of variability
2) online play is finally here!
3) graphics continue to improve from GC's Double Dash version
4) Easy to learn usage Wii Wheel (although I still prefer the CG controller)
5) Still LOADS of fun with plenty of "re-playability"
6) Plenty for advanced mario kart-ers. Loads of new characters & karts/bikes to unlock. Just type mario kart wii cheats into google to see them all.

CONS:
1) 16 of the tracks are rehashes of tracks from previous versions (SNES, GBA, DS, N64, CG) although with improved graphics
2) NO mutiplayer grand prix online! How could nintendo miss this???
3) Online interfacing is NOT as intuitively wasy as it should be. Nintendo should have bought an xbox to see how simple it should be.

Certainly more goods than bads, but the misses are certainly quite notable to those who have enjoyed this series for years. Still, worthy of your time & money. I'll see you online...

Mario Kart is a must have for the Wii

In short: Mario Kart Wii is my favorite game for the console. It's great fun to play alone, with friends and the online modes will keep you challenged for many months to come.

In detail: I've been a Mario Kart fan since the first version on the SNES. I can't count hour many hours I've dropped into this series over the years, but there's no game franchise I love more than the Mario Kart universe. This version of Mario Kart is almost perfect, and the few small flaws don't take away from it enough to give it a bad rating in my book.

What I love:

They've brought 16 classic tracks back, with a bit of updating that feels natural for the Wii. The new bikes and karts all seem to blend in to these older tracks like they were always meant to be there, and I loved playing with them. The 16 new tracks are great and several of them are downright fantastic. The bikes and karts can do stunts now, and while I've disliked some of the gimmicks they've introduced in the past (Double Dash driving for example)...the stunts actually add fun to this game.

The online mode is wonderful. Although it's difficult to find your friends at first, once you've swapped 12 digit PIN numbers and waited the required period of time for Nintendo to verify that you actually want to play together, you'll be good to go. The Mario Kart channel is packed in with this game, and it's a must if you like stats. The channel records your records, allows you to race your friend's ghosts...and the ghosts of the best racers in the world. I've had great fun just jumping into a race with 11 strangers and trying to win gold coins. The coins you win (or lose) in each race are added to your total overall racer score, which everyone sees when you enter a race. This essentially helps you figure out who the vets and who the new folks are....and new folks are awarded HUGE bonuses if they beat someone with a higher racer score. Nice touch!

What I didn't love:

Battle Mode. They've completely ruined what I loved about the old battle modes by turning it into a team-based game. Gone are the days when you and 3 friends could challenge each other to a free-for-all balloon popping match, now you must team up with a partner (sometimes a computer controlled teammate) and try for the highest score. If you're playing with odd numbers of friends, this is just the worst.

The Wheel. It was fun for 5 minutes, but after trying all the other controller options, I rate it dead last for accuracy. If it wasn't free with the game...I'd highly recommend buying a version without it. The only good thing I can say about it that it's great for new players. Two friends who had never played Mario Kart were able to jump right in on the wheel and get going. Veterans will be more comfortable with the classic controller, their Gamecube controller, or even the Nunchuck/Wiimote combo (my current favorite).

Overall..this is the best version since the N64. It's everything the DS version was, on a big screen with fantastic online play and no snaking. If you own a Wii, you must buy it.

Very Addicting!

This is probably my favorite Wii game at the moment. The wheel makes the gameplay more fun. I bought a second wheel to play against family members, all in all, tons of competative fun!

Not The Best Mario Kart

I was really excited about this title before it came out. I preordered it on amazon, with 2 day shipping (due to amazon prime), and I was eagerly awaiting it's arrival.

Once it arrived, I stopped working and started playing (only a little, since I thought my friends would be playing with me later that week--this was not the case). I started with the retro tracks, with the wheel, and... it just wasn't fun. The course selection was kind of lame, as they chose mostly forgettable/annoying courses. The wheel was unwieldly and unprecise. I wasn't going all over the course, but it wasn't nearly as tight as the analog stick for double dash or 64. I switched over to the classic controller (as I didn't have a gamecube controller handy), and I was displeased to see that they had changed the button layout significantly. I put down the game thinking that I wouldn't play it much.

Later on though, I gave the nunchuck and wii remote a try, and this was what I was expecting--a natural feel that I could get into. I also tried out the new courses, which are a lot better than the retro courses. After awhile, I was enjoying this and getting into the "waggle" features of the game as well.

Overall, it's a solid purchase, but with many annoying features. I don't know if I'll be playing this game in 6 months, but we'll see.

Pros:
-Some fun new courses
-Most of the mario kart feel
-Automatic steering
-Wide selection of characters and bikes
-Bikes are a fun addition

Cons:
-Too many unlockables for a party game (none of which you can unlock in local multiplayer).
-Tweeked powersliding ("drifting") is difficult to get used to and seems to have very little effect in the game
-12 racers in the grand prix, which means a lot more of the sucky items hitting the top players (which, depending on your skill level, might be a good thing)
-Drivers not able to hold 2 items (like in double dash)
-No character specific items (like in double dash)
-Retro course selection is kind of weak.

Overall, it's lacking some features I would have liked to have seen, but it's not a bad purchase. I would give it a 3.5 if I could. I have not yet tried out online play, so I can't comment on that. I'm hoping that they'll release more classic courses as time goes on--I'd love to see a mario kart with all the courses from all of the previous games, but I doubt that will happen on the wii. =(

The game is GREAT!

About myself, I've never been a Nintendo owner, so I've never played any old versions of this. I have tons of fun with this game, as does my wife, and my 5 year old son. I also enjoy online play with other people, it's nice to be able to use this feature. It has always worked perfectly, unlike issue I had with Smash Bros. I read some other reviews that said they didn't like being shot at all the time by other drivers. I don't mind that, it makes it more difficult, and makes it that much more exciting when you're still able to pull ahead and win. Because I never played any other versions of this game, I've used the wheel only. It was a bit awkward at first, but I got the hang of using the wheel quickly. If you're new to this game series, I suggest the wheel. This is one of the few games I have on any game system that I didn't mind paying full price.

Most of the complaints I've read about this game are that it's not the exact same game as other Mario Karts. Sorry they took out some of the things you loved, but why would they just make the exact same game again? And if they did, why would you buy it? If you miss old Mario Kart, then buy it from the shop channel.
Personally, I got a Wii because I'm tired of buttons and joysticks. The simple fact that you actually steer your kart makes this game infinitely better than any past version. The wheel is, of course, a little silly but it does make movement a little smoother so I wouldn't pay any attention to people who say it's pointless- it's a matter of personal preference and the thing is free anyway. Also, the idea that the winner is random is absurd, and you have to be really bad at this game to believe that. If you're better at it than other people, it will most definitely show. I have one friend who can almost lap me, and another who can rarely keep up; obviously skill matters. This game is simple, childish, and fun... everything I was expecting when I bought it. It does fall short of 5 stars though because it's really good, but it's not stunningly amazing.

What a Ride!

This game is all I hoped it would be. I wanted some new challenges but also some of the old features as well. This game does it. There are old courses from the DS, SNES, and Game Cube, and some new ones as well. Old features that were missing from Double Dash were added (like trailing an item) and new ones were added (like the ability to do flips after a jump). An overall great game.

Killer App for the Wii

Are you a burnt-out husk of a human being who can no longer experience joy? If so, avoid this game. Everyone else should enjoy it immensely.

I'm coming to this game as a very long time fan of Mario Kart 64. I also enjoy the DS version. So what's great/special about this version?

1. The Wheel - or just motion control in general - makes this game a whole new "thing". Reading various comments, I was worried that it would be like trying to steer a sled through mud. However, I can honestly say that the wheel is very responsive and feels much more natural than a joystick. The pudding-proof comes when playing old N64 courses...nothing is lost and much is gained.

2. Characters and Karts galore, with many unlockables. It will take weeks just to see what each character/kart combination can do. You might find some surprises...Baby Peach anyone?

3. Motorbikes - they aren't just 2 wheeled karts - the feel is entirely different and the challenge shifts dramatically. It's almost like having another game within the game you thought you were buying.

4. Stunts - the secret to stunts is to shake the controller when you hit the jump, not as you fly. Your reward will be a boost of speed that you must be prepared to handle. Again, this seems like a minor throwaway inclusion but turns out to nitro-inject fun.

5. Tracks - all the new tracks are great and justify their inclusion (i.e. they aren't just yet another variation on a circuit). The retro tracks are well chosen and of course well done. But as you explore the new tracks you find more and more little touches - hidden routes, corners cut to accomodate bikes, jumps off the main track for a stunt boost. A lot of TLC went into honing these tracks.

6. Pro ghosts - the WFC lets you find ghosts that are slightly better than you or watch ghosts of the best players in the world. It's always fun to watch somebody who is tops at a skill, even if they are eschewing the wheel for glory.

The 150cc race is a bit much, as amply reported. However, the 50cc is almost the exact opposite, and you can unlock all the tracks just by putting in the time on 50cc. I never even knew N64 had Battle mode, so I am not suffering the day-ruining disappointment reported by others. The WFC is not something I'm too interested in for much beyond ghosts and confirming my own mediocrity.

The best recommendation I can give this game is that it is the first game I would almost force anyone to sit down and play. This truly is the realization of the "for everyone" promise of the Wii.

This has to be the best game that I bought for my WII system yet. I'm a huge Mario Kart fan from when it originally came out with SNES. The only issue I have is that its addicting and leads to many late nights racing people from around the world. The wheel is a little tricky to get used to if your used to the old controls on past systems, but the controller and nun chuck combination works very well. I would recommend it to any Mario Kart fan.
