great idea, bad graphics

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 3 / 5

This is brilliant program, I use it for homeschooling. However the graphics are awful, they look like something from an early 90s computer game or worse, which is frustrating because you must discern between Zoombinis based on their differences, and often those features are dull and the same color as the background and you have to press your nose to the screen to tell each Zoombini apart.

If they could just update the graphics I would give this program 5 stars.

one minor obstacle to overcome

My almost 7-year old seems to like the game well enough. He has plenty of time to grow into it too. He's a little disappointed that he is not able to finish the game in a sitting, but I explained that is exactly what the game is supposed to do...it's a puzzle that makes you smarter as you figure it out slowly.

We had a minor problem. Our copy that we bought this month is from 1996! During installation, we were prompted if we wanted to add Quicktime 2.1. That's an old program, we didn't know if we needed it, where to get it, etc., so we clicked "no" first. (There was a mention of looking at the list to see what programs were necessary. Problem, is, we saw no such list.) After installation, the program wouldn't work. I decided to unload and reload the program, this time so I could click yes to getting Quicktime 2.1. I hoped blindly that this program was included on the CD-ROM, and that it would solve our problem. Bingo! Program works fine, on our XP laptop. FYI for anyone in a similar situation.

Big fun and Great Game for Teaching Logic Skills

This game is just what we were looking for. Our (...)daughter really enjoys it. She only needed some assistance at first and has really taken off at figuring out the patterns and logic involved to help the zoombinis travel to their new home. She even figured out the basics for helping the Zoombinis get by the fleens (something her mom and dad were slower to pick up). I would highly recommend this for 2nd graders and helps to teach math skills as well.

Originally my daughter was afraid of the game. For some strange reason she was fine with games featuring dinosaurs, but the sneezing mountains frightened her.

Anyway, now this is a game she loves (she's 5). It is good for teaching set theory. The 'bubble' puzzle is good for building thinking skills needed for programming computers.

Horrible - Confusing instructions, Dry gameplay

After reading all of these 5 star reviews, I decided to buy a copy of Zoombinis Logical Journey for my 8 year old boy. Once I successfully installed the game, I left the rest to my son. Two minutes later, he came up to me and said he didn't know what to do. I went back to the screen and all I saw was a little ship, some mountains and what looked like little comical body parts to build a character. There were absolutely NO instruction on the screen. The makers expected a little 8 year old kid to know that they should hit the pink hidden questionmark in the corner for instructions. Once clicked, it puts confusing instructions (confusing for little kids) using "big" words such as attributes and other words a little kid needs to ask mom define. Once I figured out that you needed to build 16 different Zoombinis, the little characters are taken to another screen where the player needs to put them in a certain order. If the player fails to do this, he/she loses all of the little Zoombinis except for 3 or 4 out of the original 16 that were created. And thats it...the game ends.

When a player does complete the task required, they don't get a "good job" or "Yay! you did it!" Instead the game exclaims, "And the zoombinis move on." Absolutely no motivation or reward to congratulate the player on a job well done.

On top of that, there is no "Save Game" button. Lucky for me, my older son knew that one needs to press Ctrl+S to save the game.

The "no numbers required -- all logic" motto caught my eye when I was looking for a game to purchase. THERE IS ONLY ONE CHALLENGE - The player needs to put the Zoombinis in a certain order where the an "attribute" of the next Zoombini is the same as a Zoombini previous to it. This idea is followed through the entire game except for a couple of mini games. The only difference between levels is the color or characters that need help in completing a task. For example, the Zoombinis need to cross a river. In order to do this, they have to hop on some turtles' shells to get the other side. Put the Zoombinis in a specific order (explained before). The next level would be a frog that will only row the boat if the Zoombinis put themselves in a certain order - except this time they need to put themselves in an order in such a manner that they form a rectangle. Very little variation.

Worst game ever created. I HIGHLY recommend that you buy a different game.

I just purchased this software based on the reviews, but no matter what I did I could not get it to work on my computer. I did everything support websites advised, and nothing worked. I think this software is for six year old computers and systems, not updated ones.
