EPIC!

If you have ever wanted to feel like you're a character in a sci-fi action film, this is the game to get. The characters are so well detailed they could have been used in movies. If you computer is powerful enough, you will enjoy all the little visual details. Also, the animations from full-body to facial animations are polished very well. This is one of the best games I have picked up yet. One small note though ... this game activates itself online and after three installs you cannot activate it again. So be careful with those installs!

A great console to PC port.
-The story is immersive and every detail, even details that have nothing to do with the plot, have been polished to perfection.
-Your AI party members are intelligent and combat is surprisingly smooth.
-Features a Light side, Dark side way of character advancement (Think Knights of the Old Republic), except called Paragon and Renegade respectively.
-Replay value is high since a change in background or class opens up more dialogue and quest options.
-Graphically it is very appealing, which I have come to expect from Bioware.

To all the "High system requirements" nay-sayers: keep up with 2008 PC games. Solution: Upgrade your computer. It had to be done one day, why not now?

To all the "DRM" nay-sayers: businesses are in business to make money and pirating software costs them massive amounts of money. They are simply protecting their investment. After installing the game my computer didn't start oozing blood or threatening to take over the free world; point being DRM software has not negatively effected me whatsoever. Solution: Give me the keys to the Waah-bulance and just play the game.

Pay No Attention To Those Behind The Curtain

I pre-ordered this game. For the first hour of play I was thinking OMG did I waste my money. However, as I got deeper into the game I became hooked. I thought the initial running around the Citidel was a little boring.
However once you get your wings and can fly to other planets ...well thats when the fun really starts.
Granted the
paper work is a little weak and it takes a little poking around to figure out how things work but, you quickly get the hang of things. The game runs smooth as molases on my rig with no hic-ups. Some load screens do take a few seconds to happen. When your having fun 5 seconds seems like an eternity. The graphics are good and the weapon mods are nice to play with. I love the fact that you can basically save anytime you want (Not uiring a battle though so save often). If those that right these 1 star reviewers either had no clue what they were buying or never played the game. It is completely immersive and I can get lost in it for an easy hour and a half at a time. I pray there is a sequel..as I will pre-order that as well. Other then the DRM complaints I would say I wish the game was longer.

Outstanding RPG of the year.

Don't be fooled by all of these horrible reviews-- this is a great RPG, a 10/10. I loved KOTOR and I am loving Mass Effect just as much. I have an older system: AMD Athlon 64 3500 and an NVidia GeForce 6800GS and it runs great. The graphics are awesome. Just make sure you uncheck grain in the graphics menu.

Don't be fooled by the DRM haters- The best RPG of the year is still the best!

Good for a console port

Being a fan of the developer of this game (Bioware) and their history of making great RPG/Adventure games, I was looking forward to Mass Effect for over a year. I have now played and solved the main quest of the game and here is my 2 cents:

The Good

Let me start by saying that I did enjoy playing the game. Bioware delivered a great fictional futuristic universe with an interactive story that kept me compelled to finish and save the galaxy. The graphics were good, but not cutting edge compared to current PC only games. The sound was great, a great score on par with Halo and for each and every dialog in the game there was professional voice acting that was top notch and highly believable.

The Bad

This game was clearly created for the console market in mind. The controls are limited and designed for a console control pad, not a mouse and keyboard. Bioware did change the controls and the HUD to take advantage of the mouse and keyboard, but I still felt my control of the game to be limited. Another aspect of the game that clearly showed signs of a console port is the lengthy load times between levels. This is expected on a Xbox360, but not on a PC. With the game play you can choose which quests to solve, however once you start a quest the game play is generally very linear which is disappointing for a RPG. Lastly the graphics clearly show their age, another clear sign that this game was developed for a console with limitations that aren't there on a good PC system. (My graphics card is 2 years old and I can still render graphics with more detail then this game put out.)

Summary

I had good time playing this game, but I felt robbed of truly amazing gaming experience. I know the gaming industry focuses on console systems these days, and I know the PC gaming market is shrinking, but in my opinion the PC is still the premiere gaming platform. It is disappointing to me that games are handicapped for the PC so they can play on consoles. This game is one that clearly falls into that category. Bioware can still create a great story, but I miss the days of the control and in depth game play of classics like Baldur's Gate.

Great Game, if you don't like DRM, get a 360

This game has excellent graphics and increadible gameplay. While most people complain about the DRM, it isn't really all that bad. If you don't want to have to deal with the DRM, get the 360 version.

Wow a review based on actual game content!

Ok I'm tired of all these BS reviews. Last I checked reviews on games and other media are suppose be based on the actual content. On rants and raves about your technical ineptness.

Mass Effect is a great action/RPG. The plot and story is deep and and universe is expansive. The gameplay is challenging but satisfying. The dialogue and voice acting bring the characters to life and make them more believable.

My only real complaints are the inventory system and the somewhat repetitive planet-falls.

A short review maybe but that wasn't my intention. I purchased a "hard copy" of the game and I had zero problems with activation. There ARE workarounds to the DRM and securom issues people are complaining about. But I guess people are too stupid and would rather give a great game bad reviews due to their own technical ineptness.

Why rate something 1/5 because you're too stupid to think for yourself.

I Haven't Purchased It Yet....

...but that won't stop me from awarding it a perfect "5". If Amazon allows folks to trash this game sight unseen, well then I can do the opposite.

And you know, Bioshock had a bunch of in-your-face reviewers try and harm the average score by complaining about the copy protection as well. Get over it and buy and play these 2 wonderful games. ( I imagine they are wonderful; remember, I'm reviewing the game without ever playing it.)

Let the comments begin....

It's a'right, but it's no KOTOR...

I guess the title pretty much conveys what I feel about this game. I'm almost through with my campaign, and while the overall impression is positive, I still can't avoid the feeling of being a little underwhelmed.

The story is "epic' but that doesn't mean that its riveting and enthralling as well. It goes along predictable lines, almost as if it's on auto-pilot. A few more twists and turns wouldn't have hurt, and there are hardly any "consequences" to your decision and actions. What's going to happen, WILL happen. The choices that are given to the player are mainly cosmetic and do not affect the way the story unfolds. The side-quests have no bearing on the main campaign, and have no meaning other than being a way for you to earn some XP's.

The shooter element, while welcome in an RPG, feels a little awkward. There's no first person perspective, and for those of us who enjoy a good shooter as much as a good RPG, that's a bit of a let-down.

Graphics : Even on the mid-range graphics setting that I mostly played this game on, the visuals were fairly decent. Even though my system is hardly cutting-edge, I do sometimes set the graphic options to max (sacrificing playability), just to check out how good a game CAN look. The visuals on this game are definitely good, but not quite the "mind-blowing" experience that some have labeled them. I believe PC graphics can be a lot better than what we see here (perhaps something to do with the fact that this game was created for XBOX, and then ported over to PC). A baffling thing I noticed was that the graphics engine performance was not very consistent. You would think that if you increase the eye-candy, the performance would suffer, and vice-versa. This was hardly the case with me. There were times that I could run absolutely stutter free on the highest graphics setting, and other times I would get stutters and low FPS even on lower graphics setting for the same map area. Almost as if the amount of eye-candy I had on had no effect what-so-ever on the performance. It would be smooth as silk when it wanted to, and choppy when it felt like it. This could be because of the fact that my machine was below the recommended-specs (though sufficiently over the minimum reqd specs), but at least you would expect some consistency.

Audio : The voice-acting is uniformly good, though I can't understand why everyone has to scratch their head while in a conversation... :-). The music was fine, though I turned it down fairly low, a personal preference. The guns sounded fine and powerful enough.

The inventory system is a PAIN. There is so much you need to do on item by item basis, that you spend more time in your inventory screen than you would care to. I wish they had some option to select multiple items and perform some action on all of them.... instead of clicking one, selecting an action (like "Convert to omni-gel"), then clicking "Yes" again on the "Are you sure?" screen... FOR EVERY ITEM. I am a software designer by profession and KNOW how irritating it is for the users to perform the same thing over and over and over again. Just give a "Do all" option, and an "Undo" option if the user makes a mistake. It's not that tough..:P

Mako : The vehicle isn't really as tedious as some others have made it out to be. I quite enjoyed the missions where you take this bad baby and kick some bu#t. Sure, its a little twitchy, but you soon get used to its handling, and can ride at a fair clip in it. My only complaint with the Mako was that if you've zoomed in on some target, there really is no way to tell which way the vehicle is facing, so navigating and shooting at the same time was a bit cumbersome.

The DRM Issue : Really, it seems to be blown a tad out of proportion. It's NOT a root-kit people. It seems everyone and his uncle is giving the game a 1-start rating because of the DRM (most of them don't even have the game and quite a few don't even know the intricacies of the DRM software). While I personally don't like the DRM strategies being used by the game publishers, I also understand the need for them. As long as their DRM schemes don't hurt my computer (which they haven't so far), I am ok with it (though not too happy). But DRM is here to stay, so live with it folks, and do some research if you're really concerned. 90% of the stuff flying around about DRMs are rumors perpetuated on blogs and discussion forums.

Overall I'd say its a fairly decent game, but if you go out expecting this to better or match KOTOR, you'd be disappointed. Play it for what it is.

Oh, and I just had to mention... I am SO glad that this RPG is not a fantasy RPG. I am just sick to the bone (as I suspect are many others) of hacking and slashing and throwing spells, and killing wizards and dragons and skeletons.. Mass Effect was certainly a very welcome change from that.. :-)

**** SPOILER ALERT ****
The following part (or whinings, take your pick, LOL) talk about specific elements of the game. If you wish to have a virgin experience of the game, read no futher.
****************************************

The game starts of with CHEESE.. UPPER CASE.
A scared dock worker, that too one of questionable integrity, SAYS that he HEARD (not SAW) the other Turian being referred to as Saren, and you go to the council and argue as if thats the ultimate evidence. Then you act so indignant when the council (rightfully) declines to act on that evidence. Then Ashley makes a comment to the tune of "I can't believe how the council could ignore all the evidence we had. They must hate us.. boohoo". Well, stuff it, sister!! What evidence are you talking about? You HAVE none, quite yer whinin'. We've had enough of that from Anakin in episodes I thru III.

Thankfully the level of cheese rapidly went down after that. I nearly put the game down after that. Thankfully I continued hoping things would get better, and they did.

2. A cycle of 50,000 yrs..? Oh come on. Thats not even a drop in the ocean when compared to the cosmic time-line. If they keep wiping away intelligent races every 50K years, where do they get any intelligent races from? Evolution doesn't happen overnight, you know. And "theatrically" 50,000 years lacks the impact of something like "every 2 million yrs", or something like that. That would make this a really BIG event.
