I personally liked this game. I don't know why I can while most other people can't, but I could see fine during the night, and although the jungles are a little hard to navigate through, you get the hang of it after a while. I loved all the battles you could do in this game, and the freedom of deciding where to go next..
Big letdown

I'm not a big action gamer (obviously since my last game review was for Barbie Princess & the Pauper for my daughters) but sometimes I try something new. Pirates of the Caribbean looked interesting and, hey, I love Captain Jack, so why not? There was a lot of potential for this to be a very fun adventure, but it was only a big disappointment.
The manual is almost completely useless. I read it carefully and gained very little insight into how the game is played. There is an onscreen tutorial character, but he's almost as useless as the manual since all he does it take you on a three-stop tour of the first town and give some very non-helpful sword fighting lessons. He shows you where to buy supplies, get repairs, and hire a crew, but then you're on your own. The manual hinted at quests and deserted beaches on the islands where you could find treasure, but you have to figure it all out by yourself. There are lots of buildings with locked doors but not even a hint at what's behind them, or even how to find a key.
Maybe its my computer, but the other characters all fought faster than mine, even though I was pushing keys as quickly as I could. I died many, many times and it got very frustrating. The worst part though - and this is what earns the one star rating - is that there is absolutely NO tutorial or learning period for sailing the ship. None...zilch! I was still working to get the camera angle right and a pirate ship or a storm would swoop in and sink me, before I even got out of port. Ridiculous and very frustrating!
Thank goodness I previewed this from the library. I'd be very, very ticked if I'd wasted money on this game. I guess I'll go back to Barbie.
Only looks good on the surface.

Pirates of the caribbean is a very good 'looking' game. It has some very attractive features.
Unfortunately it is SO sloppy it's not worth trying to get around the problems.
First, the manual is almost useless. There are aspects of game place that the manual doesn't even begin to describe. There are sections of the manual that are completely missing.
As others have mentioned, there are BUGS. Plenty of them. I've had characters that you had to interact with inhabiting the same physical space as other characters - making it impossible to interact with them.
I've also had outright crashes where the game just quits. Bethesda's support was quick and responsive - for the first couple days before they finally just gave up. Their solution? Start again. Well.. after starting again for the 3rd time I lost interrest.
There are other "Pirate" games out there.. Spend your money on one of those.
Worth it, with some work--

The game was relatively enjoyable as it comes from the box. It was engaging enough that I played the whole way through it to see how the story unfolded, even though it was a bit cheesy and the game itself considerably buggy and quite obviously unfinished. The gameplay itself was decent, although a bit repetetive. At sea, however, the graphics are impressive enoug that simply watching the ships cut through the waves is reason enough to play. The word majestic comes to mind--insofar as it can be applied to a video game.
It is important to note--for you Depp fans--that there is no Jack Sparrow in the game as it ships. Also, the game has very little to do with the movie. It was originally developed as a wholly different game, until being bought by Disney.
Now what I consider to be the best part of this game is the modding community around it. Google "POTC Build Mod" and you will see what I mean. What it is is an extremely well developed mod that significantly alters the game and adds a huge amount to it. The features are too many to list, but if you get this game I strongly suggest you get the mod. The difference is enormous, and the mod alone justifies buying the game.
Frustratingly Difficult

I was looking forward to this game for a long time. However, I found it to be annoyingly difficult. There is no level balance at all that I can see. You start out poor with poor equipment, which is fine except that everyone you run into can kill you in one swipe. Not to mention that it's hard to get money, but you have a lot of expenses. You might be tempted to say 'well that's life', well, this isn't life...it's a game. If I wanted life, I'd go to work for entertainment.
I couldn't find any way to scale the difficulty, nor did it seem was I able to adjust the sensitivity or flip the axis on any of the movement controls. I'm going to keep plugging away, because it does get easier as you figure it out, but the learning curve is very steep, much like a some of the football games.
I give this two stars only because it shows potential, if I can survive long enough to develope the character's skills to a point that the game is enjoyable. Naturally the instruction book that came with the game was abysmally general, and not very clear. It's sad that that's become the norm.

I must say that this is one of the worst games I have played since Outpost. The manual is utterly useless. It has hardly any solid information about the controls or flow of the game. The controls are non-intuitive and sluggish. The game play is very poor and kluggy. This game is so bad, I thought there must be a patch for it. But I was wrong. I am playing this on a P4 H/T with a GB of RAM and a G-Force video card. Unless you enjoy disappointment, avoid this game at all cost.
NOT Pirates of the Caribbean - just pirates

This was purchased for a child, at the request of that child. Personally, I don't care for the game. It was clearly scraped together at the last minute to exploit the film - it's a generic pirate game with no distinguishing characteristics except Johhny Depp on the jewelcase cover. I rather resent that.
In addition, it performs poorly with Windows XP, and there is no patch that I can locate. The 13-year old recipient of the game manages to make it work, but even he thinks it's a rip-off: fun enough, but nothing special. He's playing it while he waits impatiently for "POTC II".
Not Sea Dogs 2

Bethesda should be ashamed of themselves; Sea Dogs is one of the best pirate games of all time and Sea Dogs II had potential of being twice as better. Then Disney throws their moneybags that Bethesda to rush the release of Sea Dogs II and change the name to Disney's new movie Pirates of the Caribbean. Therefore we Sea Dogs fans now have Pirates of the Caribbean, which is full of bugs. The graphics are beautiful but it's so buggy that I cannot enjoy the game. I gave it a fair chance I wanted to see it succeed but I got so frustrated with the bugs in Pirates of the Caribbean that I destroyed the CD out of anger. I recommend everyone to not buy this game, instead buy Sea Dogs and send letters to Bethesda to cut your loses with Pirates of the Caribbean and make us a worthy sequel to Sea Dogs.
The graphics are great. Tis a Shame the Game Won't Play

I finally got a working (?) copy of the game after over a month of searching and waiting. It arrived Friday evening and it is now Sunday evening and the only part of the game I've actually seen is the splash screens for loading and the movie files. I've loaded, unloaded, reloaded and tweaked all weekend. I've upgraded drivers, checked my system to make sure I'm well within requirements (and am) and, as of this moment, the only part of the game that plays are the videos. I've had help from folks who actually got their games to work (and they are mystified about my problems).
Save your money.
I wasted $50 on this.

First off, there are like two games in this, which would make one think that it would be great.
1. The RPG gameplay is pathetic, it is to hard, and at night, you cannot see whatsoever.
2. You cannot defeat ships or even hit the ships. BAD!
3. TERRIBLE GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
