Finally a real video game for my 3 year old

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 26 / 26
Date: February 12, 2008

I've been anxious for my 3 year old daughter to play video games as an inside leisure activity when I can't spend direct, continuous time with her. I prefer her actively doing something rather than passively watching a DVD. But the video game options are either poor quality (Leapster) or just too hard for a 3 year old.

This game is really the first game she's been able to pick up easily and also enjoy for more than a few plays. It was made for preschoolers. The controls are pretty easy. Tilt left and right to move Diego, press '2' to jump and other actions, and then a series of Wiimote motions to do things like climb a ladder or hose off Diego. It's fairly repetitive which is a feature for a 3 year old.

It requires some adult supervision to get through the menus and whenever a new event takes place. And occasionally she's get stuck in some spots. But for the most part she can play on her own ("Go away daddy. I don't need help."). I hope Take 2 continues to put out games focused on this age range.

FABULOUS!

I've been waiting for this game to come out so that my 4 year old son can play Wii. He likes the bowling, but that is pretty much all he understood to play using the Wiimote. Until now! This game is great and well thought out! My son can use the Wiimote independently, although sometimes he requires a little "help" as to what action to take(and the programmers even added that little help from an adult using a second Wiimote). But he certainly can play the game "on his own." From an adult perspective, this game is well designed, takes into account all of the subtle elements of the Diego cartoon - even a Wii action to say "Freeze Bobos!" Fabulous game!

So much fun!

Update--my 3 1/2 year old, has completed the game after a week of playing no more than 30 minutes a day!!!....it's not very long at all --I'm a little disappointed at the length of the game for 39.99! ...even though I'm sure he'll still enjoy playing it.

Original Review--I have two kids, a very focused 3yo that can play this game forever if I didn't stop him, and a 4 yo that could usually play with everything but for no longer than 5 minutes, and SHE loves this game too!!!! Keeps them both entertained...great for hand, eye coordination. And a great tool to get them to their chores! I wish there were more preschool games like this one. I gave it 5 star for fun and entertainment, and 4 star for the price. I play Wii and I can understand why some games that are very detailed oriented, with many steps may cost, 39.99 and over. But I don't believe that such a repetitive game for preschoolers should cost so much!

My kids LOVE this game. It is truly the best game out there for little kids. My sons (3 & 5) can participate in the adventures and they love when "Click" or "Rescue pack" come on allowing them to figure out which animal to save or which item they need to get to the next part. Everyday they beg to play, they have passed the game a # of times and still find it just as thrilling.

The option of having a "parent aid" who uses the 2nd controller is fantastic for the smaller children, who don't want to give up their own controller to have you do the task for them. They probably don't even realize you are helping.

The only thing that would be great is if it had different levels of difficulty, which would give the game more longevity, I'm not sure how long it will take for them to master it all and tire of it.

I would love to see more games like this for the WII.

Best game for 3-5 year olds

For anyone who owns a Wii system, it is a fabulous game for family fun, as has been well documented elsewhere. The only real area that was lacking was a great game for the real youngsters in the family. The problem has been solved with this game.

As others have said, this is a great game for young children. Our 4 year old daughter and 5 year old son both love this game. They cannot wait to play it again.

The gameplay is very simple, tilt the wii-mote to move, tilt it further to go faster. The primary interaction is done using the "2" button. Diego will chime in and offer instruction at each new section, and the gameplay is both intuitive and forgiving. There is no area your child cannot get through, no way your child can die, thus ending in tears as they hand you the parent the wii-mote.

The initial linear gameplay is a bit short, but there is a competative area where two players can play at the same time against each other, and this will certainly extend the life of this game.

If you have children in this age group, and you are looking for a game for the wii, look no further.

Perfect for young kids!

We own a Wii and my four year old son gets frustrated with most of the games we have. I ordered this game and he absolutely loves it! It gives step by step instructions with pictures that are easy understand and mimic. He can actually play this without help from mom or dad! This is a great game for younger kid still learning to play video games.

Perfect for my daughter

My daughter is a huge fan of Go, Diego, Go! - She's memorized the songs, we've been to see the stage show, and when this game came out I thought finally something other than wii Play that might be interesting to her. It was far better than my expectation - she picked up the controls in the first 10 minutes and then was giggling and having a blast as she ran, jumped and mastered swinging on vines or the zip cord - she had far more fun than i thought she could in the first 30 min of play. 2K had done a great job with the voice talent, the pacing and the controls for are easy enough for a 3 year old to pick up and enjoy.

Fun, But Pricey for Limited Play Options

I will start by saying my 3.5 year old does love this game. He has fun playing it and the actions necessary to complete the tasks are age appropriate, but I fear he will get bored with it soon.
One con is that Diego goes through the adventure with Baby Jaguar, but you can't control Baby Jaguar. There is a helper option in the adventure mode, but the options to use it are too infrequent for a child to play as a second player (it is designed for parents to help with tasks, not 2 player play).
Another issue is the safari adventure play option is VERY short. Even my 6 year old made a comment "Wow, I think you did the whole thing already, that's weird". We finished it in a few hours of play over one weekend. Compared to the depth and effort put into games like Mario Space Galaxy and Lego Star Wars, which are only $10 more, the simplicity of this game is a little shocking.
Besides safari mode, the only other mode is racing. Races take 1-2 min to complete and have only a single 'track' for each race with no increasing levels making it boring.
In my opinion this game sells preschoolers short. Compared to games for other systems geared to preschoolers (think Leapster or V.Smile). They could have added so many more game options.... but this game delivers just the bare minimum.
I'll end on a positive - my son does enjoy this game and thinks it is fun. I would recommend it as a fun game for the 3-5 crowd, it is way too simple for older kids. My main complaint is quality vs. price. If you can, share it with a friend and split the cost or wait for the price to come down.

My 4yr old loves this game!

I got this Wii game for my sons 4th birthday, he has an older brother who is 7 and is always trying to play his games and has difficulty. The controls are easy for him to understand, he can play and beat levels on his own. If your kids are diego fans they will love this game and so will you.

Great Game - for Little Ones

I have a 5 year old daughter who loves the Wii but has been having a hard time playing some of the other games out there due to difficulity levels. This is perfect it is quite simply for her to figure out and I don't even have to help her out most the time except to tell her to go back and check the shaking tree. I would reccomend this game to anyone with little kids who want to try out the game system.

Yes, the game is simple for older kids and might not have the longest run time. But for the younger ones, it is just enough for their smaller attention spans and it allows them to be able to play the game by themselves.
