One of best Game Boy games ever.

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1

This game is up there with all the other GBA games, GB color games, and regular GB games. A way to describe it is like Risk with really good graphics. This game may look like it's for kids, but it's not. I'd say it's for ages 11+. Not at all for the possibility of it being a bloody war game (it's not), but because this is really a stragititic game. It's difficult, but also very fun. This game is a real thinker, but I love it. I'ts deffinatley one of the best Game Bay games ever made, probably in the top 10. There's really only one word needed to describe this game: GREAT! It's definatley worth the money which is rare these days.

How to learn turn based wargames.

You already know the game's great reputation from the many other reviews; I want to add here that this classic is a perfect game for learning how to Turn Based Wargame.

1) The later version called Advance Wars 2 is an upgrade in many areas including graphics and weaponry. But this original version, while indeed challenging, is more friendly to the beginner (less difficult to win). One can always sell it right here later, and then upgrade.

2) One old 2001 or 2002 issue of "Nintendo Power Advance" magazine (usually available on Ebay auctions) featured a long in depth strategy guide to this exact game (pages 36 to 60 are all devoted to this first version of Advance Wars). Find that particular issue ( I think it was volume 2) for help while advancing from recruit to grognard.

3) If buying used, a cartridge which also includes the original printed manual (game guide booklet) will help orientate the player to gameplay procedures and options.

Salute!

a LOT more fun than you'd think at first!

I was a little skeptical before I bought this, but gamespot.com and about every reviewer here gave this game high marks, so I bought it solely based on that. I only buy games that are a lot of fun and have great replay value. The four games I own are Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, F-Zero, Super Mario Advance, and this one. I only regret buying Mario, as I'm old enough to have played the heck out of it the first time around.

This is one of those games where every time you look up, it's two hours later. The tutorial is fun and essential. The strategy is top notch and it's a lot more fun than PC games of the same genre. You really feel like you've accomplished something when you clear a map by finding the weakness. The music gets old fast, but the game loses nothing when the music is turned off. Thanks to Nintendo for coming out with another classic. It's been many years since they've done anything really new.

Pure fun!

Who'd have thought it- a fun, well-designed strategy game... For the GBA! Admittedly, it has a sugar-coating to attract kids and lull parents, but the actual mechanics of this game are very solid and enjoyable. The units (heavy and light infantry, armor, artillery, aircraft, etc) are simple and straightforward, and seem to be effectively identical no matter whose side they're on. The "side" advantages are conferred by the respective commanders, who have slightly cheesy bonuses or "powers" which add a little variety. All of the important basics are handled; supply, terrain, reinforcement, transport... Everything you'd expect from a simple-yet-fun strategy game is here, and it's pocket-sized to boot.

A can't miss game for GBA

This game is a great game. The gameplay is deep and complex but you get eased into it so you aren't lost. The idea itself is simple: destroy your opponent's army and take their headquarters while protecting your own. You go through all kinds of terrain and situations as you continue to defend the Orange Star nation. The are all kinds of other options too, such as multi-player with 1 cartridge for up to 4 people by link, make yor own battle fields, and even multi-player on one Gameboy Advance. ... this is definitely a must-have game.

Do you like Red Alert? If yes, You will love Advance Wars!

I recently got this game. Not from here, but I still had to write a review. Advance wars is just like Red Alert 2, just on a smaller screen. It has great battle animations, for example, if a squad of tanks attacks a squad of infantry, you will see the tanks shooting at the infantry, wiping them out. It's the kind of game you can just pick up and play. A great addition to the Gameboy Advance library.

Great strategy game

If you like games like Final Fantasy Tactics or Warcraft, then you should love this one. The main reason I gave this 4 instead of 5 stars is that the game only stores stats and progress for a single player (ie. someone else can't start their own campaign without erasing yours), plus the game isn't terribly difficult or long to beat- although it has tons of variety, multiplayer maps, and characters to play as.

It may be turn based, but it still is the best!

Ok, I really haven't heard anyone talk about this so I thought I'd bring it up. This game is turn-based, for those of you who have never heard of this, think Pokemon where one trainer goes first then the other.

Now this is the only thing that almost kept me from buying this game, in short, this game is the absolute best and I usually HATE turn based games!(nothing like an "I ALMOST beat him" scinario!)The units for all sides are the same but different looks to them in the combat screen. Orange Star has an USA look to it while Blue Moon is Russian. The difference is the CO's power. A CO is kinda your alter ego in the game, and all have a strengh and weakness that caries over to your troops. For insatance one has great offence at close range, but his long range is a joke, while another has Artillery that will have you cursing into the wee hours of morning just by trying to get close to him. The best thing unless you have already read the manual and know everything, is the training. You have to go through 20 training missions before the actual campaign. I sorta resented this at first but it was actually kinda helpful to learn that my units would slowly run out of gas and ammo.

So in summery if you want a good solid stratigy game, well this is just for you!

This game has over 70 reviews so far and still hits a solid 5 stars. Who am I to disagree? The game is, flat out, the coolest time waster to ever hit a hand-held screen. I used to be a Pokemon junkie (logging in 5+ hours a day in an attempt to beat the final four) but was saved by the challenge of Advance Wars. Now I spend my time trying to beat the Enigma (I admit I'm not very good). But I love every minute of it. The game challenges the mind and not the reflexes and one could even argue that it can make you smarter. Sure, it's a weak argument but you can't make it about Super Street Fighter. Anyways, there's not much to add to what has already been written. The game is fun, intelligent, and a life sucker. What more can you ask for.

It really is THAT good

I was surprised at how well thought out and fun this game really is... I didn't really want to get the game because I had just bought Mario Kart, but I read the reviews about it and just went on impulse.

That said, it really is THAT good. Almost everything about this game is top notch, and it has probably the most replay value of any game out for the system. Even when you finish the field training and the campaign, there are numerous battle maps that you can acquire, almost infinitely extending the life of the game. Going back through the campaign unlocks new commanding officers that have different abilities and further offer more gameplay options.

I've played this game for about a week, and I can honestly say that it is the best game on the GBA that I've played. I got bored with Mario Kart after a few plays, but this game really stands out as a shining example of the GBA's power. Plus the game is only $..., compared to $... for third-party games.

Very highly recommended.
