Great gameplay. ...

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1

This is a straightforward action/strategy game, but this time it's done right. Sure, the graphics kinda suck. But the gameplay is actually really good if you give it a chance. Using the terrain to your advantage in an attack successfully is strangely satisfying. The thing is that if you DONT use the terrain or thinking about which weapon is best, you'll be ripped to shreds by the very hard AI. Do it right though, and you can wipe out five double-cannoned tanks in seconds. The other trick is not to be seen. Launching well-placed surprise attacks is key, and it really adds a lot to the game. It's recommended if you want strategy in your game. If you want to just blow stuff up, you can do that to ( there's plenty to destroy ) just remember that if you just go charging into an enemy base without thinking twice, you'll be swarmed and you shouldn't expect to last long. But overall, a good game for the people that can appreciate it.

I have had this games since it was released and I still play it. Like some of the reviews here I thought it would be an action packed blow-everything-up game. Although there are plenty of things to destroy just rushing in with barrels blazing is a sure fire way to an early death. This is as much a strategy game as it is a shooter. The graphics are good at best. I love the style of the game. Kinda like tanks made out some really cool lego toys. If any of you have played scorched earth, worms,or death tank you'll have sort of an idea what to expect. It's all about well placed shots and vantage points. A few other things I really take away from the games are: free-roam environments. See that mountain in the background? You can drive to it, climb it then roll land mines down onto the enemy. Someone mentioned it was too hard to find or to get the hard to reach crystals. When I see a crystal on a hill that I can't reach I just lob a few mortars up there and the shock wave from the explosion will send it tumbling down. If you like strategy games where you see the enemy base and then use the surrounding terrain to your advantage, this may be a game you will enjoy. I bought mine the first day for $50 and loved it at that price. What a bargain now!

Great game, but shooting on the move is difficult to master

As a afficianado of the old arcade Battlezone game (I guess that gives my age away), I find Wild Metal to be a lot of fun. Oddly, I like some of the things that other(s) (...) seem to feel are negative about the game.

Okay, so there's no big emphasis on some hokey "storyline" gag, no pre-mission briefing, etcetera. (...)It's a freakin' TANK GAME! (....) Select your tank, rumble out into the hills and mountains to find and store your power cores, and try to blow away everything that moves before it blows you away. Yeah, it takes some thinking, some strategy, but it's not rocket science with a need for some in-depth, hokey storyline in order for you to grasp the concept, and the essence of your mission.

And, okay, so there's not any obnoxious, loud, thumping music blaring at you while you play. Just the realistic rumble of your tank, the rattle of the tracks, the explosion of artillery fire. The absence of a bunch of stupid theme music cluttering up the game is a plus, not a minus. You'll learn to love the ambient sounds of the game, and will begin to concentrate on them. It's nice to be able to hear the shots coming in at you.

Some (...) have trashed the graphics, too. I actually think they're pretty good, in a desolate, otherworldly sort of way. And I love the less than 1G gravity effect. Yes, (...), a tank CAN sometimes fly!

My biggest criticism would be this: In order to ever get REALLY good at this game, you MUST be able to shoot on the move, steering the tank in one direction, rotating the turret in another while selecting weapons, shooting, adjusting trajectory and delivering your ordinance on target -- all on the fly. I haven't mastered it yet. I mostly still just pick my ground carefully, try to ambush them, strike first, strike hard, hurt them before they even get their turret turned in my direction, and, when the steel starts flying, stand toe-to-toe and just outshoot them. Doesn't always prove successful, though, and any tips on shooting on the move would be appreciated.

In short, Wild Metal is a very cool game! Buy it!

rock solid gameplay

Coming from Rockstar, you would think this would be a "wild, crazy, in-your-face extreme" title, which it isn't. But it's also a lot better than most titles affixed with such labels. You pick your choice of futuristic tank-type vehicles, then get dropped in the middle of a landscape with the mission of collecting all of the power-cores. Each has it's own color, and once you pick one up, you have to then deposit it in any of the hovering recovery rings. That's about the gist of the entire game right there.

There is no music, just the satisfying hum of your tank as it revs around the terrain. And that's really the main goal here. Survey your surroundings, explore, eliminate the few guardian tanks and gun-turrets, and get all of the cores in the least amount of time possible. Granted, that time might be as long as an hour since the boards are so huge, but that's the sort of game this is. Perhaps "Pensive Metal" might have been a better title for this game, as there is very little "wild" activity to be found.

But the gameplay is rock solid, control is responsive, difficulty isn't too hard, levels are a bit boring but you really won't notice after a while. It's just a very engrossing, concentrated type of game. No thumping rap music, no blaring cheese metal guitars, no "extreeeeme" qualities whatsoever. Perhaps a game better suited to adults, and those who can remember when solid gameplay beat flashy graphics and a licensed soundtrack every time.

This game doesn't pretend to be anything other than a strategic/action tank shooter. There are no cinemas and no plot other than what is stated in the manual but who needs the soon-forgotten frills when it's all about the GAME? The levels, enemies and weapons all have their own characteristics that will completely involve the player, given the time and patience. You can shoot it out toe to toe or lob artillery shells over valleys and take them by surprise -- very satisfying. This is no arcade shooter and is thus by itself on the Dreamcast. Rent it, buy it.

After reading the reviews and seeing all the people who gave this a bad review I thought I had better make somenthing clear for all you true gamers out there. No there is no plot, But nor does the game claim to have one. The game is simple, get the crystals. But like any good game it starts off simple and gets more difficult as you get better. I hate a game that kills you in the first level before you even have a chance to learn how to play. This game just gets more difficult as you go, perfect. And for the guy that complains about the speed of the tank, he needs to see how fast tanks go in our world, it ain't that fast. If you like strategy that isn't your run of the mill shoot um up then youll like this game.

An Semi-fun game

It does take a lot of time, there is no music, however Ithought it was sort of fun because you use a lot of strategy. Sure,it might be boring, but if you look at it in a different perspective it is fun. I gave it a 3 because there is some parts in the game that is lame. On one of the levels it was really hard. The one thing about this game is that you can't die.

A solid game

I wouldn't give this game 4 or 5 stars because I reserve those for my favorites. However, though at first play this game may disappoint, it will become fun once you learn some strategies. This is not a charge-in and blow stuff up game. You slowly maneauver your tank around mountains and rain shells upon enemy bases. There is no lock-on target, no pumped-up music, nothing you'd expect. But the weather effects and the ambience are excellent. You can even hear the Doppler effect as a mortar is launched. And your tank can also get frustratingly stuck in snow. With 21 missions this is loaded. I take my time and spend an hour per mission, patiently eating away at my enemies. I could just as well take far less time because you have unlimited lives and enemies don't regenerate. If you like Scorched Earth or projectile games you'll like this simulation. Just don't pay more for this game than you would on Chinese take-out.

This game is relly fun on 2 player. One player is kinda fun but the tanks are too slow and there are to many hills. But it has cool weapons. the other problem is on some stages it is hard to see if you look up to shoot flying robots.

I hate to write a bad review, really I do. I have no choice on this title though. Wild Metal has no plot to be found, lousy graphics, no action, poor controls, and a price tag that should be shrunk to $1.99. I found it sad that I had bought this game expecting a new tank game and placed it on the shelf within a few minutes. There were no tanks, by our concept of what a tank is. Was this game designed for the origional Atari machine? I am amazed that game designers take advantage of consumers and pump out games that are lacking quality, just to make a quick buck. Please let the designers know that you will not fall for this behavior, leave this game on the store shelves rather than on your own at home.

I invite the folks at Sega to force their developers to put effort in the games they sell, otherwise Sega may take a knockout blow from Playstation 2 and its emotion engine. If I sound unhappy, I am. I am tired of spending money on these games that deliver nothing they have promised. My advice-buy RE:code veronica if you want quality.
