This is why the Wii was created

This game is truly revolutionary. I am a football nut and watch the games on Setanta all week long. The Wii interface is a dream come true. You can control players off the ball with ease, and strategically control a match. Passing all over the field is as easy as pointing the cursor on-screen. Defending is much more about controlling the gaps, and man-marking rather than button-smashing. Corners and set pieces are brilliant as you send players on runs to draw away defenders and then sneak in a fullback at the last moment for a free header.

Seriously, this game is the best thing to happen to football games in a long time. Fifa/W11 are just graphical improvements one year over next ad nauseum. They can't touch the change in gameplay that we have here in the Wii version.

Granted, the graphics and presentation are not the best, but I prefer watching swimsuit models in HD if I want eye candy.

Great deal for the best sports game on the Wii!

In spite of being a big soccer fan, I was a bit hesitant about buying a soccer game with Wii's hand held controls for a leg controlled sport. After reading great reviews about the game, I bought it a couple of days back and was very pleased with the purchase. The Wii controls are pretty fun and the training mode prepares you well. The only thing that would beat this is having an Wiimote attachment to your leg. But for now, this is great fun!

Game changing

This game is an absolute must for the soccer lover.

The controls take a little getting used to, but after that they open the door to a whole new way of playing, giving you an incredible control of the game.

For instance you can control more than 1 player at the same time. You can also pass the ball anywhere you could think of, make players run to open spaces, etc. The possibilities are endless!

And the best part is that you do so in an intuitive and easy way. Once you get used to the new controls that is :)

In my opinion this title revolutionizes the soccer video game industry.

Literally game changing.

Fantastic soccer game for the Wii

The Wii version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 is one of the best sports titles for the Wii. The ability to pass anywhere you want to on the field combined with excellent animations, online play, and number of liscensed teams makes this a must own for any sports fan and/or soccer fan.

The controls take a bit of getting used to at first, but once you spend time in the Training Mode, they become second nature. Also, the manual is extremely thorough and includes many, many moves that you can perform in game. Read the manual, and you will see just how indepth this control setup is.

There is definitely more freedom within the game which is a breath of fresh air. You can pick absolutely anywhere on the field to pass to, send multiple players on a variety of runs (and directions), and set up really neat plays on set pieces. The camera is pulled back farther than the other versions in order to see more of the field so that these type of plays are possible. You can also dictate on the fly how offensive or defensive you want your team to be by hitting the directional button on the remote.

On the defensive side, you have a variety of options. You can control just one player: All you have to do is click on a defender, hold A, and drag him any which way you like. You can also have control over your entire defense and pick which players you want to man-mark and zone.

The crowd chants/reactions and commentary are actually fairly well done. The menus and menu music is actually very nice for the first time in a PES game and they are very Wii-ish in style. Shooting is responsive, the framerate is absolutely solid, the ball physics are spot on, and the animations are superb.

This is THE best sports game for the Wii. I would recommend it for anyone who owns a Wii and enjoys soccer or for anyone who just likes games that really take advantage of the Wii control scheme.

Revolutionary sports game

Unlike the disappointing 360 and PS3 versions, the Wii version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 is not only fantastic, it revolutionizes how sports games can be played.

What the Wii allows is for the player to point and drag players across the screen, allowing players to control the entire team, rather than only the individual with the ball. This allows players to fake runs, overload sides, and create their own set-plays dynamically. While there is an initial learning curve, PES 2008 Wii allows you to play the truest form of soccer that has been made.

Best soccer game out there. Period.

This is the best soccer game I have ever played. And I've played every game since Fifa 95.
To be honest, I was never a big fan of the pro evolution series. I tried playing a couple of them because my friend always said how great they were, but I liked fifa because it was more playable. However, I haven't played any Fifas on the Wii, but I know that no game can top this.
With this game you have absolute control. You can control almost every little detail about the game. You can draw plans for how the ball will be played in the next 15 seconds. It's just amazing what you can do with the wiimote! I've been hooked since I bought it and I'm scoring 8-9 goals in every game so I think I should move to the next difficulty level.

Just to break it down:
Pros :
-Total control over positions,passing, etc
-You can do things with the wiimote that you really can't do with normal consoles, like point where the ball will be passed
-Champions road is a fun carrier mode with a lot of depth
-Only 40 bucks!

Cons :
-Doesn't have all the teams like Fifa (This is for all PES, not just this one)
-You don't total control over where the ball is shot, you just shake the Nunchuck. I thought this was a major downfall at first, but it's not that bad and I figured out that where you were running before shooting is where you will shoot, so now I just run in that direction before shooting

Spectacular

As others have said, this is THE best sports game for the Wii, and one of the best games there are for Wii. Simply put, all of the other sports games available for Wii haven't come close to this level of integration with the Wii's controls. PES has done that, and done it exceptionally well.

Controls are smooth and intuitive, can be learned within half an hour thanks to an extensive and helpful tutorial system, and gameplay retains all the excellent core functionality that is PES/WinningEleven. While I need not stress over the great design in controls and gameplay, I'd also like to add that the online for this game has so far been quite good for me. Almost no lag, and little difficulty in finding others to play against.

Wii Sports showed us what can be done in terms of sports games for the Wii, and while EA and other game companies failed time and time again to introduce anything other than cheap tacked on controls, Konami has gone from the ground up and built PES for the Wii, a display of gaming excellence that fits right in with the system. This game is fun, easy to learn, and ultimately very satisfying to play.

Original concept and innovative game play

I have played this game everyday since purchasing it. The controls take a little time to learn, but once you get the hang of it, you can't stop playing. It is so satisfying to control so many aspects of the game in such an original way, by using the wii controllers. Being on the wii mean you don't get next gen graphics, but you do get great game play which mean it's very fun to play. Highly recommended.

Easily the best sports game I've played for the Wii...

I've tried a few different sports games for the Wii and none seemed to really make use of the Wii remote capability properly. Thankfully Pro Evo does, the gameplay system is superb, online play seems to work well - I have not experienced any lag yet.

Even if you're not a big soccer fan I think this would be a good addition for anyone who likes sports. I had bought FIFA for the Wii and was seriously disappointed, this is as good as it promised to be....

Great game but a few faults

As other have stated, having complete control of you team is fantastic. Passing, making runs, opening up space. Fantastic use of the IR remote on the Wii.

All that control however comes with a price. DEFENSE! You really have to be on top of your game, and if you're used to previous sports games where a CPU player for you team will do what you think he should, that won't always happen here. Countless times I've watched offensive players dribble right past my defense as they just stand and watch, boom GOAL against you. It's very frustrating but there are a few things you can do to counter this.

First, Man mark. Remember, once you give a player instructions (make a run, pass, or man mark on defense) he will do that until you tell him to do something else or cancel ("c"-button) that command (at which point the CPU takes control of that player for you). So what happens when you've 3v3 and all the offensive players are marked by your defensive players and a 4th player dribbles forward with the ball he goes un-challenged towards the goal. This is because you've told your defense to man mark and they will stay on their player. Highlighting the man with the ball and hitting "A" (to mark him) will bring over the closest player not otherwise occupied (as in, your 3-defenders are occupied so they stay where they are). That closest player is probably 20-feet away and it's way too late to get him into position to defend the man with the ball and next thing you know, GOAL for the opposition. So be careful where/what you tell your defense to do b/c they'll do it until you cancel the command (and the CPU takes control and they do what you'd think they should) or tell them to do something else.

Two glitches I've found are also present:
To slow dribble, the manual and tutorial say "point at the player and press A" but when I do that the player starts a fast dribble. If I press the Z button, he will slow dribble.

Also, in the tutorial, the goalie will not come out to challenge a 1v1. The instruction say "point at the goalie and press A" but nothing happens. But in matches he comes out automatically on a 1v1 regardless of which control option I have selected.

Those are really minor complaints for an otherwise fantastic game. Konami has raised the bar for control in a sports game (imagine these controls in NCAA Basketball or Madden) and here's hoping other developers will follow suit. If you're a soccer fan and own a Wii, I strongly recommend you buy this game.
