A good effort done poorly

I was very excited for this game, and I was even planning to pay the $150 price tag for the lifetime subscription, and then I played the game... This game was definetly a let down for me. I found myself playing the game for hours trying to justify the purchase until I eventually decided that my time is better spent elsewhere. Besides the very dry story (don't know how they managed this, being the designers of the very story rich diablo universe) the other thing that I HATED about this game is how every fight is exactly the same. There is no need to use your abilities, they might make the simple fight a little simpler but that is all, and you don't have to develop any sort of strategy, it is very simply hack n' slash in its lowest form. Grouping is difficult and has no point to it other than being in a group, there is no incentive. The only exciting thing this game has offered me so far is the opening cinematic, and the ending cinematic is the only reason I plan on finishing it. I will give the game props for its character customization and itemization. But I gotta say that overall the games plot and fighting mechanism is boring to the core.

You don't need to hear what the game is about from me - that's what the product description above is for. I'm just here to review what I've experienced.

HGL is a very beautiful game that certainly a lot of love went into the design. But, like many others, I've noticed that things get repetitive very quickly. However, isn't that true of EVERY game that you play? The same "L" block falling for the 3-line Tetris? The same alien being blasted into oblivion? The same big-breasted heroines and muscle-bound heroes? OF COURSE IT'S ALL THE SAME!! How many different kinds of zombies do you know about? Do you really want a weak-looking protagonist? Can't we all just get along?! Oh..sorry... I digress

The point is that people should expect that many elements of even FUTURE games are going to have more of the same, but hope to have it presented to them in a new way. HGL accomplishes this somewhat by allowing the player to choose the type of gaming experience they want from following their char around from behind while they're slashing beasties to ribbons or stepping into their chars suits of armor and blasting them to bits. To date I've only seen this in MMOs, but HGL brings this element to a much higher level with physics designed with next-gen in mind.

Yes, it needs more monsters. Yes, it needs more story. Yes, it needs more cleavage. But isn't it really the mindless hours of "point + click = something dies" that you're really looking for? Give the developers time... more content is on the way!

Horribly Disappointing Game - Vista Users Avoid At All Costs!

I played the demo before ordering it. It was basic, but seemed promising.

That was a lie.

The story is bland... basically a long string of cliches thrown together. It makes the absolute least sense of any game I have ever played. You'll run around through so-called "random" areas endlessly, doing the same tired quests theoretically to defend the human race. "For the living." Yeah. Anyway, despite being "random" every area seems to be one of about 4 different areas. Sure, the corridors are in different places. Who cares? It's the same thing. And the "random" placement of objectives means, more often than not, if you have to find 6 access terminals or something... they'll all spawn back-to-back in the middle of a road. WTF?

If you have Vista and/or an 8800, the game is *horribly* unstable, even after more than 2 months live and several patches. Out of memory crashes, constantly (have 2 gigs of RAM... no issues in a dozen other FAR prettier games). The graphics are far from great for the suffering, too. Doom 3 was dark, but at least pretty if you could see it. Hellgate? Other than fairly imaginative enemies, there's basically nothing to look at. DOS games have had better UIs, as well. The only thing that's intuitive is crashing.

The only good thing to say is the classes. There are several classes that play pretty differently. Marksman, which I played most by far, plays just like an FPS. But there are also melee and magic classes. Oh, and the minigame is *far* more fun than the actual game - except when you get stuck with a requirement that is seemingly impossible, such as looting swords which drop about 0.000001% of the time for non-melee classes.

All in all, if they paid *me* $10 a month to play this game, I think I'd still take my business elsewhere.

Diablo 3 rocks!!

So, I went into this a bit wary, wondering how they were going to pull off an FPS Diablo in a dark futuristic setting...but I've been very pleasantly surprised!

I really enjoy how they've just basically adapted the Diablo 2 Gift Set character classes into these. For the Templars we have the Blademasters who are the Barbarian and Assassin classes combined while the Guardians are more modern Paladin. Then in the Hunters you have the Marksmen as the updated Amazons and the Engineer is the modern day Druid using this urban environment. At last our Cabalists reincarnate Soreceress into Evokers and Necromancers as Summoners, still using the same elemental forces as ever. It's just a brilliant breath of new life into the classes I fell in love with playing in Diablo 2.

I only played a lenghty demo for this game but the reasons people are giving this game bad reviews is ridiculous.This game is fun!!!You kill a variety a demons in a post apocalyptic london, with numerous guns,swords,spells and minions.Also, the enviromemnts are randomly generated so every time you play a level its different.As for everyone's complaints for the buildings being repetitve, I personnally don't notice that two buildings look alike when I'm blowing up zombies with concussions grenades,dodging imp flames and gunning down flying demons with my rocket pistols.Another complaint is the lack of storyline,do these people know what an MMO is??!! They don't have storylines, that's the entire point so the player can come up with their own adventure and story. Another complaint people made is the bugs, well i admit that at first the game was glitchy but they fixed most of the bugs within a week, so there should be no complaints.As for my complaints, some of the character animations for the swordsmen are a bit weird, but there fine for all the other characters.All in all, Hellgate london is an awesome game,the best features are the variety of weapons(mortars,rockets,machine psitols,snipers,grenades,holy swords,laser rifles,etc.,the armor also looks really cool,on most MMO's the lower level armor looks really stupid.The enimies are great, they each have diffrent animations,powers and weaknesses, the bosses are incredible some of them are the size of buildings!But the best feature is the atmosphere the game creates with its enviroments and graphics, there is nothing scarier then traveling through a subway,with flickering lights, and zombies advancing slowy and bat demons hanging from the ceiling, with glowing red eyes.So if your a fan of Diablo,horror games,FPS, or RPG's, you need to pick this game up.

Great Game, a must buy!

I've had Hellgate: London for several days now and its the best game I've seen in a while. I highly recommend it! Why do I say that? Its fun. I'm running it on my 2005 laptop that meets only the minimum specs on the box and I'm still having a blast without all the bells and whistles that one gets from spending 2 weeks pay on their computer. It did lock up on me once, but that's because I was trying to alt-tab between several programs(which this game allows you to do!) while using elderly graphics card and processor drivers. Many have compared this game to Diablo 2... why? Because its the closest thing to it in the last ten years. Its not a shooter, its an RPG just like D2 was. Bill Roper and his team have taken all the things that people liked about D2 and expanded upon them. The quests, finding items, trying out different characters, etc. is all there and they've even improved upon it a bit. Want to pick up EVERY dropped item on the screen? Hold down the "f" key for a second instead of running around clicking on each one individually. Got a skill you use repeatedly when killing monsters? The "Q and E" keys can be used for skills so you don't have to move your hand from the "WASD" keys used to move around. These along with many other little things have endeared me to this game and I'm only a few hours of play into it. I'm not one of the "hardcore" gamers who spends hours online playing a game and may therefore have different expectations from others... but as a casual gamer who likes to play for an hour or two here and there this game fits the bill perfectly for me. I must caveat all this by saying that I have yet to play it online... if you're wondering how it is as a MMO look elsewhere. But as far as the single player mode, It looks good, has a captivating storyline that draws you in and is fun to play... Well worthy of $40 of my hard earned cash.

Good, not great

Preface:

I downloaded the demo before buying the game. The demo lets you try out 2 classes, the marksman and the blademaster. I loved the demo (with the exception that it never told you when it was over, you just kept trying to find the next area until you realized there was no next area) and was convinced to buy the real game as I liked what I saw and was a huge fan of Diablo II (to the point that I played every class through all 3 difficulty levels and some variants as well).

Experience:

I only played single player - a level 20 Evoker with a few other chars up to the high single digits. I believe am a little over halfway through the game on normal difficulty.

Overall:

A part of me really loved the game - there were some pretty challenging fights and I am an action RPG / FPS player so this was right up my alley. I enjoyed the combat even though it was somewhat repetitive (this is typical/expected in the genre). However, the drab world and ugly bio-armor that my character wore took away from the experience. It looked like he was walking around with a head crab (from Half Life) on his head. Part of the allure of this type of game is that when your character gets more powerful, you can see it reflected in the character's equipment. The drab textures were just... depressing. I'd prefer not to see a depressing world for 40-100's of hours of playing a game when there are many other more vibrant options out there.

There is very little variety in level designs (despite the "random layout"). You'll have the street between ruined buildings, the cellar level, the sewer level with a small number of "unique" levels every now and then (graveyard, 314, museum, battlefield, rift) - probably one every 20 levels or so. This is ok for a while, but leads to the feeling that you are playing the same 3 levels over and over again. More variety and especially more (possibly brighter) tilesets would go a long way here.

The fact that you could upgrade your weapons/armor was nice as it allowed you to stay pretty current with what you were fighting.

One last thing is the subscription vs. non-subscription. You can spend a lot more money on this game if you subscribe to get updates every 3 months and access to events ($10/mo). My concern is the general feeling that at some point single player support will be cut off (although they have patched up to version .6 for single player) in favor of the people who are still paying.

The final version of this game (after all of the updates) may reveal the great game that is under the surface, but at this point it's a good diversion for maybe 10-20 hours depending upon your patience level.

Pros:

- Graphics
- Ran very well on a machine about 2 generations old (AMD single processor 3500+ with a 6800GT graphics card ) although load times were long, the fact that it ran at all was impressive.
- Great overall ideas
- Difficulty was about right (not too easy, but not to hard either)
- Weapons could be upgraded/modified in a few different ways

Cons:

- Extremely repetitive. I didn't think this would bother me (having read this in the reviews), but, although the levels are randomly generated there are very few different level types. I got to the point where I didn't want to play because I knew the next 3 levels were going to be exactly the same as the 3 I had just finished (and the 3 before that, etc).
- Very drab world - Colors are almost all dark blue/green. Ugly bio-armor.
- Not many different types of monsters
- Interface was a little bit clunky - just took some getting used to
- NPCs didn't actually talk - just printed quest text to the screen.

* My town portals stopped working around level 15 - I'm assuming a bug, but this detracted from my game experience

Good for the long run

I considered Diablo and Diablo 2 Blizzard's hallmark and helped pave the way to the their much famed success Blizzard is now, along with the ever popular Warcraft franchise. I was glad the original Diablo team still want to continue with this type of genre. After departing from Blizzard North. It almost seemed like Blizzard just let the franchise buried for good. Not anymore! thanks to Flagship Studio.

Hellgate London has a lot of potentials down the road once they patch things it up. All the patching is due in part to rushed release date thanks to EA. Before patch 0.7 was released the game had couple big bugs and glitches you can't avoid daily but it's gone now. The primary story driven quest aren't as compelling in depth compared to Diablo 1 and 2. Hopefully the devs can come up with something more intriguing in the future for the story to develope. Some of the side quests as you advance, opens up new zones to explore in the game. Most NPC chat are quite humorous. I'm pretty sure the devs did some of the voice-overs like what they did with Diablo and Warcraft. One of the vendor sound like the peon from Warcraft. The chat interface before the patch was murky but with 0.7 patch it helped adjusting the clarity and chat pop-up to appear behind character panels so you don't have text overlapping your stats panel.

Game atomsphere gaives you a gritty and dark Diablo like feel. Graphic wise it sort of resemble Half-life graphics with Diablo gameplay in mind. The game presented a good sense London is indeed infested with foul demons and necros alike lurking around the corners makes you feel like you're the only person still alive out there doing something about it. Attributes and skills functionality also resembles Diablo/World of Warcraft with the exeception of skilltree points distribution different from Diablo. In Hellgate players can spread their skill points in a more diverse preference like World of Warcraft.

Overall the game is fun, nevertheless. After hitting lvl 31 as a marksmen I haven't regret with my spec. Hellgate London has rough edges but these will be smooth out with the upcoming patch slated for Janurary. I would of give it a 3.5 or 4 star if EA actually gave FSS time to polish it up and still turn up this buggy. But that was not the case.



Intriguing, but highly flawed. Not worth full price.

This game has great potential, but does not live up to it. The backstory is confusing, poorly fleshed-out, and can't seem to decide if it is serious or farcical. Gameplay is a great deal of fun at first, but rapidly gets extremely repetitive. In the end I was rushing through it just so as to finish. I will not play it again. It's worth picking up at greatly reduced price just to play for a few hours, but not worth the present-day value.

Suck it Blizz

Awesome, as is to be expected from this team. More proof that Blizzard(c) had nothing to do with the success of Diablo(c), as if WoW gameplay wasn't proof enough. A definite buy.
