this game is truly bad in every aspect of the word if you like resident evil and love steady yet puzzling game play than dont even think of getting this terrible game. its too dark, worse than carrier and it just sticks you in the middle of nothing and gives you items that cant be used no matter what you do. the story line is ok but, the graphic also stink big time(which by the way are more suited for atri) ,if they could have done any thing good for this game it would have been not to make it

why?

the word dissapointment can not adequately express my feelings about this game. perhaps my expectations were so high. admittedly the graphics in this game were good but that did little to improve the horrible scenarios. whatsmore after playing a game like tomb raider were tthe game can be saved at any point a game like shadowman its limited saving positions i found myself doing the same things over and over and over again. all of my friends agreed that this game was horrible and even started laughing at me when they saw me playing it. i would recommend this game for no one

Decent, not great

In "Shadow Man" you play the part of Mike Leroi, an unfortunate soul who is enlisted in the war between Good and Evil by an ancient voodoo queen, the mysterious Mama Nettie. Mama Nettie implanted the powerful Mask of Shadows into Mike's chest, thereby making him Shadowman, an immortal with the power to walk both in the world of the living--Liveside--and the world of the departed, the dark and terrible Deadside. Shadowman must defeat the forces of Evil, who are gathering their combined strength to unleash the end of the world--Armageddon--in Liveside, guided only by Mama Nettie and her twisted henchman Jaunty. Playine alternately as Mike and as Shadowman, it is your job to save the world from the legions of evil.

"Shadow Man" is not for the weak-hearted. It is an extremely dark and violent game. Eerie music, blood-curdling shrieks of tortured souls, dark and ominous environments, mutilated victims, serial killers, these are the hallmarks of this game. If any of these things bothers you, skip this game--and this review--immediately.

Now, if NONE of these things bothers you, then pay attention because "Shadow Man" offers plenty for the gamer. The game is certainly extremely complex, with multiple huge and labrynthian worlds. The story does indeed evolve nicely by itself and the payoffs are rewarding when you figure out what's happening.

However, this complexity can work against the player as well. With so little guidance in the game, it's not hard to fall into ruts. Other negatives, for me: the continuous darkness, both of the levels and the storyline, is hard on the eyes and ears making it hard to play for long periods. And, those ruts can become rather frustrating pretty quickly. The graphics are sub-par for the Dreamcast; put Soul Calibur in after playing "Shadow Man" and you'll feel cheated out of $50. The characters here are clunky and robotic, the action nothing special.

All in all, this is a rich and daunting game which should satisfy those who like their games dark, scary and gory. But because of the frequent ruts in the story advancement and weak graphics, I can only give it two stars.

My recommendation: at this point, gamers are better served waiting on "Resident Evil: Code Veronica."

Could've been a Playstation Game

Granted, some of the context of this game, as well as the cinemas and dialogue were excellent, but overall I never got the sense that Shadowman really takes advantage of what the Dreamcast can do. I came away thinking "Wow, I thought the Dreamcast would make for a character that runs more naturally and fluidly than Lara Croft." Instead, Shadowman has astrange and unnatural bow-legged jog through environments that look like they could be rendered by a Playstation just as easily.

Go do that voodoo that you do so well...

Shadowman is a uniquely dark title that tries to rival Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver in terms of bleak level design and innovative gameplay, and, although it can't match up with Eidos' masterpiece, it still offers enough great story and action that the comic book fans can appreciate. Taking steps ahead of the Playstation and N64 versions, Shadowman offers superb graphics and better gameplay, although no real changes were made to the final game. It is interesting, though, to see Acclaim didn't give it the same treatment it did with its awful South Park games. Recommended for older gamers and comic book fans who live to see a skull talking in Jamaican. Yeah, mon!

Actually 3.5 Stars is more appropriate

I've been playing this game for over a week now and I can honestly say that it's great fun. The strong points of this game are it's background story and amtosphere. The game is very gloomy and forboding. Gameplaywise...it's basically a 3rd person shooter along the lines of Tomb Raider. If you didn't like Tomb Raider you'll probably not like this. One of the major weakpoints is sound. When the music works it works well, but usually the soundtrack drops in and out without any real continuity. Also sometimes the music was completely garbled like a scratched record. Occasionallly I had trouble hearing shadowman's voice and commentary. Another weakpoint is the overall darkness of the graphics...it's kinda hard to see objects/enemies at a distance.

The game takes about 50-60 hours to complete. I can't really see any replay value after you finish the game though...unless you enjoy prolonged easter egg hunts.

I was disappointed to see that Acclaim made no effort to really use the Dreamcast's full capabilities. Graphicwise the DC version is just a 3D-accelerated PC version with minor tweaks. Also where is the vibration pack support? How about a VMU mini-game too? You'll find none of those here. Make no doubt about it, this Shadowman was rushed to market. But despite all of it's shortcomings, Shadowman is a very spooky and entertaining game. Definitely worth a look.

Give it a try if you like really good platformers

This game took me by surprise. The depth of the levels and the game play is mindblowing. I know I will get some flak for saying this but this game is as close to Metroid and any game has come in the 3D era. If the DC version turns out like the PC version and not the PSX version it will be a real winner.

Unlike anything else available for Dreamcast!

This game, while realllly slow at first, rocks when you actually get into it and start collecting items. Game play is rather fluid, but due to it's immense size "hesitates" when loading differrent levels, switching between game play and the cinema scenes, and when switching music tracks. The soundtrack is awesome; exciting and "spooky" at the same time. Shadow Man is not for the faint of heart, or for kids. It's ESRB rating of MATURE is there for a reason. If the music doesn't get to you, then the setting will. With zombies trying to slash you with claws or hooks, firing automatic weapons, sling handfulls of "slime", or using VooDoo magic, this game has the potential to scare the hell out of you. If you survive, the ending will not disappoint you. If you don't, that ending is pretty cool as well. The only drawback (or another top selling point, depending) is that the game is LONG, and will take more than just a couple of hours to complete. Be prepared to play this game for days, and replay it forever.

takes some getting used to

at first, i was bored with this game. you run around and shoot things all day long. how much fun can that be? the next day i popped in the game, put on some headphones, opened up a beer and turned out the lights and "wow", so much better. this game can suck you in with it's macabe music and environments. the adventure seems so much more non-linear than anthing like metroid. if you are looking for an adventure game you can get into, pick this one up.

Give it some time and it's got you!

This is not a game for those of you with a short attention span. It takes a while to get to the action, but it's worth it in the end. First off, the graphics are superb, a little dark at times, but I think that adds to the eerie nature of the game. Turn out the lights and play for a while, it's downright spooky at times. The sound effects match well with the whole feel of the game and include some scary death screams and such. The real reason this game is good, however, is that once you get started the game is almost completely non-linear. You can go just about anywhere at anytime. For the average gamer this can become tiresome, but if you are like me it just adds to the challenge. Trying to figure out where to go and what to do next are sometimes difficult, but I hate games that are too easy. The amount of time it takes to figure out these challenges means a lot of playing for the price of a game. I spent 30 or so hours beating the game, and for me that means pennies per hour of entertainment. If you give up easily and don't like a challenge, this game is not for you. If, on the other hand, you are a hardcore gamer like me you'll eat this one up.
