I just finished Shadow Man last night. My brother couldn't stop recommending this game to me so I finally got around to trying it. Despite the fact that the animated characters in the story lacked detail (low polygon count), I did feel that their motion was outstanding and the "AI"s behind their actions where exceptional. Also, the settings were HUGE and fabulously detailed with great texture and imagination. Everything is connected to everything in this game and it really takes some time to learn the elaborate layout of locations (helps to have a big hippocampus). The story is dark and engaging and the gameplay is fabulous. Lots of great little puzzles to solve with plenty of surprises from baddies and the environment. I thought the music and sound effects where excellent - the music ranged from Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" to Gregorian chant-like music to disco (funny) to house music. The musical transitions are nothing to write home about (unlike games like Banjo-Tooie on N64) but the music is well combined with a truly spellbinding array of sound effects which add great texture to the game. Some areas of the game are incredibly dark, requiring the use of a torch or flashlight that you acquire during the game (I could only play this game at night). The bosses were surprisingly easy to defeat (except for Jack the Ripper!), once you learn how, although the real fun is finding out how to defeat them and finding them at all.
takes some getting used to

at first, i was bored with this game. you run around and shoot things all day long. how much fun can that be? the next day i popped in the game, put on some headphones, opened up a beer and turned out the lights and "wow", so much better. this game can suck you in with it's macabe music and environments. the adventure seems so much more non-linear than anthing like metroid. if you are looking for an adventure game you can get into, pick this one up.
the best game ever

i know i'll be called a sissy for this but i don't care, this game scares the hell out of me! and i'm 20! the dark gloomy enviroments, the eery monsters come slashing out the dark corners of the game, i feel often times that i am mike or shawdow man either one i become wrapped in his world and make it my own, a huge good point for any game. i haven't been this scared since the first resident evil, and i'm not comparing the two, just to make sure. everything looks very real, even my girlfriend who hates video games commented on how real the surroundings were, and yes it takes for ever to beat this thing! but well worth it, a great game to compete with the playstation and N64
Decent, not great

In "Shadow Man" you play the part of Mike Leroi, an unfortunate soul who is enlisted in the war between Good and Evil by an ancient voodoo queen, the mysterious Mama Nettie. Mama Nettie implanted the powerful Mask of Shadows into Mike's chest, thereby making him Shadowman, an immortal with the power to walk both in the world of the living--Liveside--and the world of the departed, the dark and terrible Deadside. Shadowman must defeat the forces of Evil, who are gathering their combined strength to unleash the end of the world--Armageddon--in Liveside, guided only by Mama Nettie and her twisted henchman Jaunty. Playine alternately as Mike and as Shadowman, it is your job to save the world from the legions of evil.
"Shadow Man" is not for the weak-hearted. It is an extremely dark and violent game. Eerie music, blood-curdling shrieks of tortured souls, dark and ominous environments, mutilated victims, serial killers, these are the hallmarks of this game. If any of these things bothers you, skip this game--and this review--immediately.
Now, if NONE of these things bothers you, then pay attention because "Shadow Man" offers plenty for the gamer. The game is certainly extremely complex, with multiple huge and labrynthian worlds. The story does indeed evolve nicely by itself and the payoffs are rewarding when you figure out what's happening.
However, this complexity can work against the player as well. With so little guidance in the game, it's not hard to fall into ruts. Other negatives, for me: the continuous darkness, both of the levels and the storyline, is hard on the eyes and ears making it hard to play for long periods. And, those ruts can become rather frustrating pretty quickly. The graphics are sub-par for the Dreamcast; put Soul Calibur in after playing "Shadow Man" and you'll feel cheated out of $50. The characters here are clunky and robotic, the action nothing special.
All in all, this is a rich and daunting game which should satisfy those who like their games dark, scary and gory. But because of the frequent ruts in the story advancement and weak graphics, I can only give it two stars.
My recommendation: at this point, gamers are better served waiting on "Resident Evil: Code Veronica."
Give it a try if you like really good platformers

This game took me by surprise. The depth of the levels and the game play is mindblowing. I know I will get some flak for saying this but this game is as close to Metroid and any game has come in the 3D era. If the DC version turns out like the PC version and not the PSX version it will be a real winner.
ONE OF THE BEST GAMES I EVER PLAYED

the word dissapointment can not adequately express my feelings about this game. perhaps my expectations were so high. admittedly the graphics in this game were good but that did little to improve the horrible scenarios. whatsmore after playing a game like tomb raider were tthe game can be saved at any point a game like shadowman its limited saving positions i found myself doing the same things over and over and over again. all of my friends agreed that this game was horrible and even started laughing at me when they saw me playing it. i would recommend this game for no one
