At first, I didn't think I was going to like Rayman 2 that much. The demo was decent, but not super-engaging. I liked the cartoony feel to it, and thought the graphics were beautiful, but I wasn't sure it would be worth the money to play the whole thing.
I'm glad I took a chance on it, though. It's the best platform game I've played, and probably one of the best games I've played period. The gameplay is nice and varied -- the levels are well designed, and you gain neat new powers throughout the game. One level might have you running and jumping through a forest, while the next has you on a high-speed rocket trip through a dank sewer. It's hard to get bored when you keep wanting to play just a little longer to see what comes next.
There are a few annoying issues -- the "run along planks dodging cannonballs" level is irritating, and sometimes the camera angles make things harder than they need to be, and I wish it didn't ask me if I wanted to enable the jump pack each time I play. The rest of the game is so good that it's easy to overlook these minor quibbles, though.
This is definitely a game to show off your Dreamcast with. The graphics are utterly gorgeous, and the gameplay is simple to pick up and very engaging.
O.k.

Rayman 2 is the best example of how to do a platform game (in the vein of Super Mario 64), in my opinion. It has a cartoony goofiness that's sure to entertain, and manages to achieve that perfect balance of making the characters cute without being annoyingly so.
The gameplay is simple and elegant, and the game itself contains enough different types of levels to beat that you don't get stuck in a rut of just jumping around the world avoiding bad guys. Different objectives, from waterskiing holding onto a snakes scarf to using Rayman's helicopter hair to fly up a lava flow to riding on a flying shotgun shell to actually piloting a flying pirate ship, keep the game fresh from level to level. The gameplay of the different methods is done very skillfully, making each method relatively easy to control, while balancing them with challenging levels.
The collection of yellow lums in the game also adds to the replayability of Rayman 2, while not resorting to simply making certain lums nearly impossible to get.
The only two flaws I could see would be the lamentable brevity of the game and the "bonus" levels you get when you collect all the lums/cages on a level. The bonus levels are rather pointless, and a pain in the neck, but they're easy to ignore in light of the quality of the rest of the game.
All in all, I definitely consider this a must-buy game, more so than Sonic Adventure (not to put Sonic down, but Rayman 2 truly tops it in everything except length of the game).
Brillant graphics and great game play.

I've tried a demo of this game. It's great. I'm a fan of the Rayman series and can't wait get a hold of a full version. Graphics will blow you away. They're amazing. One of the best features is the 1st person view. Hold both shoulder triggers on the controller and see the world through Rayman's eyes! Game play is seemless. Give this game a try if you've never played a Rayman game before. You won't be disapointed.
It's a beautiful day in Rayman's world...

After a stunning debut on the Nintendo 64, Rayman 2: The Great Escape continues to amaze on the Sega Dreamcast, with better visuals, a new underwater level, Internet download, and a multiplayer option that unlocks once you beat the game. You'll be drawn in to this game a lot, with its Mario-ish gameplay hooking you and bonus stages involving dog-riding and water-skiing thrown in for good measure. The gameplay is deep, and you learn new techniques as you continue in your quest- a definite plus. The music could've been a bit better, but, in the end, who can complain? Rayman's bound to grab you with this impressive feat, even without any arms or legs. How IS that possible!
Lots of fun

I agree with the earlier reviews that this game is too short but it is still 5 stars of fun. It is very much like Mario64 and Legend of Zelda. It's not as convoluted as Banjo Kazooie and that's a good thing. I am an average gamer that can barely find time to sneak in a few hours here and there. This one is perfect for that. There is a save feature at the end of each world and I am just able to get through a world in enough time to turn it off and stop the kids from burning the house down. Each world has it's own new trick to learn and most of the time it's clear where to go next. You basically move around in each world collecting items and figuring out little puzzles here and there. The animation is incredible and music is good. The bonus rounds are a joke though. You're simply mashing buttons as fast as you can. It's definitely the lamest part of the game and I don't even attempt it. Along with NFL2K and Crazy Taxi, this is one of my favorite games for the Dreamcast.
Everybody loves Rayman

Rayman 2 is a GREAT game! It's graphics are good, and it's gameplay is simply perfect! EVERY Dreamcast owner should get this game! It's challenging, intriguing, and fun. You're supposed to think your way through massive levels (54 to be exact) to get the 4 Masks of Polokus. It's really cool! Get RAYMAN 2: THE GREAT ESCAPE!

I was left speachless by this game. I'd played Rayman for Playstation several years ago and didn't think too much of it. Having played Rayman 2, I can't believe how much console gaming has advanced in the last few years.
This game is much better than Sonic Adventure which in itself is a very good game.
I enthusiastically recommend it.
One of The BEST Games of the year
