I have never been a really big fan of racing games. But I have to say i was very interested in BP when I first read about it. As more and more reviews came in, I decided to pick up a copy and give it a try. After around 20 hours of play, both online and off, I have to say that this is a GREAT game. Racing is so good in this, and you get sucked in so well, that when you actually stop playing it, you start thinking about it in your sleep.

If I had to say one bad thing about it, it would be the difficulty of actually finding the finish line at times. I can't tell you how often I was way ahead in a race, took a wrong turn, and then lost the race. I would have liked a "GPS" like system.

You won't regret getting this game. Really. It is fantastic.

Average racing game with some flaws

I have long been a fan of video games and usually enjoy racing games. I strayed away from the Burnout franchise when I started playing the Need for Speed games. I decided to give this game franchise another shot and was not impressed too terribly much.

First I will talk about the positives of this game.

The music soundtrack is second to noe. It's great, I love it. I also like that the developers made it rather simple to switch tracks if you so desire.

The graphics are sharp, crisp, ad look fairly real. The city is laid out well, as much as a video game city can be anyway, there will always be those weird twists and turns but that's okay with me.

Some things I didn't like.

The camera angles are annoying at times, and terrible at other times. It seems that no matter how nice a game can look, developers keep screwing up the camera angles making it hard to see things. It gets frustrating very quickly.

The layout of the screen. There are so many things going on, that you have to look at the little map at the bottom of the screen, the compass at the top of the screen, that you are not really allowed to lose yourself in the game. The only time I was really able to 'watch' the graphics and appreciate the game, was when a friend was playing it.

The controls are average in terms of layout, but I would have liked the option of customizing them to how I like it.

Overall, this is a decent racing game, although, if I had to pick my current favorite is still Need for Speed Carbon It offers the same free roam style of play, but has a much better story mode and crisper handling. And, it's cheaper. To me Carbon has more bang for the buck. Burnout Paradise seems to be full of promise but lacking on the follow through.

I hate this game. I cannot express in words the degree to which I hate this game. If this game were a person, I could run it down with my car and not feel the slightest twinge of ethical concern. I hate it so much it leads me to forget things that I've been trained to know are right and good and simply shout expletives in its general direction for the next few hundred words. Fortunately for this game, I'm not quite that much of a jerk.

Imagine that you took Test Drive: Unlimited and the last decent Burnout title, smashed them together, and then carefully excised everything even remotely fun from the mangled monstrosity that resulted. There, my friend, you have found Burnout Paradise. Everything about Revenge that entertained me enough to keep from snapping the disc in half and tossing it into traffic has been removed from this game, and I can't in good conscience recommend it to anybody.

One thing that I can't fault the game for is its appearance, which is certainly a step up. The game is definitely beautiful. Driving through Paradise City, you get to see a lot of different environments, and every single one springs off the screen and directly into your face like some kind of carnivorous monster. When it comes to useful visuals for the gameplay, however, there's some problems with the level of detail included in the game's environments - specifically, I have a hard time figuring out where the bloody road turns in some locations. This is worst in the downtown areas and best on the outskirts of town, but ANY time I miss my turn because it doesn't look like there's a road there at all, somebody needs to yell at the graphical designer.

The game sound is mostly unremarkable, so let's not. It won't make you physically angry, and I guess that you might like the soundtrack (I personally loathed roughly 80% of the included music, but that's not atypical for me with an EA title), but it's not going to pleasure you sexually or make you reevaluate your life.

My problems with the game all have to do with the gameplay, or, rather, the lack thereof. If you've played Revenge, you might remember fun modes like Traffic Attack or Crash Mode. Those were pretty terrific, right? Well, they're gone. Not only are they gone, but some of the fundamental rules that you would have learned from prior games in the series have been utterly invalidated. The big one is the rules on What Kind of Traffic Causes Crashes. In Revenge, they had a simple rule - if you could see headlights or it was a truck, you would wreck into it. Otherwise, you knock it to the side. I don't know what they replaced that with, but I DO know that in the first hour I played, I wrecked against no fewer than ten cars stopped at intersections, smaller than me, facing away from me.

Of greater concern is the bald stupidity that comes from building an open world street racing game in a world that nobody has ever been to. If this game were set in San Marcos, TX, I'd be all over it because I KNOW WHERE THOSE STREETS ARE. I don't know where anything is in this game and the game doesn't do anything at all to help you learn. I'm faced, as a newcomer, with the choice between spending ten hours losing hard just to learn where everything is (not fun) and just plain losing because I don't know where anything is (also not fun). Closed tracks are fun because it's hard to get lost. I got lost in three of my first ten events in this game and ended up on practically the wrong side of town. That's bad.

I could go on for a thousand more words, but I won't belabor my point too heavily. The game has been well received, and maybe it's just me. Maybe people who like "open world" style games will find something to enjoy here. I didn't. I found Test Drive to be a better implementation of the idea. With limited modes that mostly feel identical, no Crash mode (seriously - Crash mode was a puzzle game and that was FUN; Showtime is entirely random), undirected gameplay, poor layout, and any number of other problems, this game would have to come with chocolate cake and my own personal supermodel before I would even consider recommending it. There's a lot of potential for an open world Burnout game, but this isn't the game to realize that dream.

Nice Graphics - but gets boring quickly

The graphics in this game were stunning. And there is definately a "fun factor" to tearing up a city, taking massive jumps off of bridges and smashing up other cars.

But the fun on this game wore off within about 1 hour. It just seemed like it was doing more of the same thing over and over again.

I'm not a big fan of racing games. So I would imagine that someone who likes racing games might find this much better than I do. But, even so, I found some of the previous Burnout games and other racing games (Midtown Madness, Project Gotham) to be more engaging because they made it possible to play multi-player on the same console - when I can play it with my kids, it tends to have much more value for me.

So, if you're only moderately interested in racing games, and especially if you like to play them multi-player (without having to go online), then you're probably not going to enjoy this one for very long.

Uhhh?

What happened to the reviews already left? This game blows, what a waste. Don't go too fast and hit a car or you will crash...

A Whole New Burnout Experience

Fans of the Burnout series be warned : They've overhauled one of your favorite games.

There's a lot to say so I'll try to be concise. I first heard about this game on www.360voice.com. A reliable community that I frequent that has a LOT of members who are in-the-know in the video gaming industry. The forums there are always handy.

So, the game. They've completely changed the format. If you didn't already know, they've made it free-roaming. Circuit racing as you knew it in Burnout is dead in this game. Races are now run from point A to point B in the free-roaming map, the quickest route up to you to find. Road Rages are run in the same fashion, save for the fact that you have free reign as to where you want to go to take down your opponents. A new "Marked Man" event gives you a point A to point B route to run with up to 7 other cars trying to total your car before you get there. The Burning Route has replaced the Burning Lap of Burnout Revenge fame.

Graphics. The graphics are actually quite good. Very high on par with the abilities of the console. The crash damage and crash physics are almost spectacular. The damage your car incurs is very representative of the way in which is wrecked. Driving performance is not, however, effected by damage.

The crash mode as we knew it is beyond dead. It has, like the rest of the game, yielded to the free-form trend. You can now initiate a crash run at any time in the game by tapping both RB and LB buttons at the same time. The Crashbreaker from Burnout Revenge is replace with the Ground-Breaker which hurls your car further across the pavement. Score is tallied by a combination of the distance your car traveled and the total value of the cars you wrecked, receiving another multiplier for each bus you manage to smash.

Online is an experience in and of itself. The most popular thing to do currently, it seems, is the online co-op challenges, which require all participating drivers to meet some sort of criteria (like total jump distance, hang time, drift distance, etc.) before the challenge is completed. There are 350 of these to complete in the online mode, along with Road Rages, Races, and Marked Man events.

On top of all this, there are 400 "smashes" to discover in the game, which are simply gates on either end of shortcuts throughout the city, 120 Billboards to fly through, and 50-some-odd super-jumps to find.

Overall it's a whole new Burnout experience that takes a little bit of getting used to for veteran fans of the series. Burnout as you know it is virtually dead, but it's progeny shows promise.
If you've never played a Burnout game before, then you've got a better running start at a very rich game with hours of playtime to 100% completion.

Uhh...Why don't You Like This?

It's not the same game... It's better and not as cartoony, it's still alot of fun. the only problems I've had, is no Co-op. It's pretty freaking awesome. The Map thing is a little bit of a pain but I think that'll get better with mor game play.
I like it and if you don't then go play something else and quit whining.

I got this game and was so excited to play it with my friend since on the commercials it was saying take down Paradise together and things, I figured it used teamwork. I wasn't too happy when I opened it and looked at the back when I got in the car and realized it's only one player unless you play online.
So, I gave it a try on my own. At first I wasn't sure what to do and I'm used to Burnout Revenge so I kept getting mad when I would crash. After I figured it out, I started to have a lot of fun racing and it can be challenging. The thing I don't like about it is just how you do the same sort of races over and over... just working to increase your score. I also don't like having to drive over and find a repair shop or the junk yard. I also don't like having to discover some of the shops yourself before they'll show up on your map. I always see them when I am racing and then when I go back to find it, I can't.
So, overall I've been having a good time playing but I only play for a certain amount of time before I get tiered and turn it off for a while or put in Burnout Revenge since right after I got Burnout Paradise and realized I couldn't play it with my friends I went to Gamestop and got a used copy of Burnout Revenge... :)
So, in closing.... would I buy it after I've played it... yes, but I probably would have waited for the price to go down from $59.99.
I've never played any of the Grand Theft Auto games but my friend told me they're basically the same, plus you get to do other things... so I'm looking foward to the new one coming out this April.

Another great Burnout game! Better than PS3 version...

I've played both versions and again the Xbox 360 comes out on top of the PS3 for a couple main reasons. Rumble, the Xbox 360 controller is better for racing games overall than the generic PS3 controller and the achievements are fun to get.
