This is one of the few games I would say, buy a console for (whichever you prefer). A couple of things to be aware of though: (1) This game is NOT for children. (2)The violence is more real. The people are much less "cartoony" and if you're not really a "thug" but even a little sensitive, you might be disturbed, at first. For example, I had failed a mission like 5 times in a row, and some girl walked past me and said something nasty to me; I was in a bad mood, pulled my pistol and shot her. WHen you shoot people now, you can see where the bullet hits, they grab the area, and show pain on their face; they will try to get away, fall down, etc. I actually felt bad, and decided to shoot only in self defense (for awhile anyway). Hitting people with cars is more real, too.
Since I first wrote this review, I have been able to spend a few more hours in the game, and while I do agree there are the small problems (for me) that other people have pointed out, this is still one of the best games in my library and I will be playing it a long time to come. Some things I found out:
(1) Driving is, indeed "more realistic", and therfore more difficult. This is behind a lot of complaints about the "poor driving controls," vis. if you take a corner too fast, you will miss it. If you accelerate to fast into a turn you will fishtail, you will skid when a "real" car would skid, etc. I do agree that passenger cars flip over more than they probably would. I have been getting better at driving by practicing; I think in this game as you drive more, use weapons more, etc, you DO get better; it just doesn't note that for you like San Andreas did. As far as controls, I WOULD have preferred to keep the old GTA type button scheme for driving, but you can get used to R trigger instead of "A", etc. Besides, I think you can remap the controls, if you want to.
One thing that I don't like, and that some other users have pointed out, is that Nico is SLOWER when taking cars. If the door is locked, he breaks the window, "hot wires" it, and takes off; this can take what feels like half a minute sometimes, not a good thing if a cop sees. And remember, if you jack a car, kill a random person for no reason, etc, in this game, THE COPS DONT HAVE TO SEE IT. NPC'S WILL CALL 911 ON YOU! So you may THINK you're about to get away with whatever, but "ping" 2 stars, wanted circle, augh! This messes up some fun.
Next, be careful what you crash into. If you hit somethings like concrete posts, guardrails, etc, Nico will go thru the windshield and be ejected from the car (lol). Again, not a good thing if you are being chased, it seems like it takes FOREVER for him, to get back up, get back in the car, and go. IF there's a cop close to you, you WILL get busted.
Last tip: If you are cornered by the cops and there is no way out, get killed, not busted-in this game if you DIE, you lose a bit of money but not all your weapons (yay, finally, thank you Saints' Row), BUT, if you are BUSTED, you lose all your weapons.
My favorite thing so far is multiplayer. The whole city is open, there are usually no cops, you can go around and wreak havoc with the NPC's, or if you are in a "ranked" mode there will be other people on, trying to kill you and each other etc. One really cool thing-in mutliplayer, find a helicopter, (right trigger throttle, left stick collective) bumpers tail rotor), take off, and fly around, and MARVEL at the city; it is AMAZING. The center island, evidntly is supposed to be manhattan, and you can see landmarks like central park, etc. I flew all the way to Jersey (or whatever it's called in the game) and back to Brooklyn (or whatever its called in the game.
Don't miss this game. If you have a 360 or PS3, you MUST play it!

I've completed each GTA game 100% and been playing GTA4 for about 20 hours and am about 1/3 through the game. The revolutionary aspect to me is how they've gotten me to care about the characters and my friends to the point I'm already mourning/worrying about which ones are gonna die. Maybe you didn't take the time to read Weasel News stories about your characters, read emails from your worried mother, ignore Roman for a few hours of gameplay only to have him text message you saying he has this sick feeling you are drifting apart, ect ... If that doesn't ring home, be incredibly happy you never had to deal with that stuff in real life, because the game will remind you if you did ... No other video game has ever done that. This game is revolutionary for people who want to FEEL.
And if not, if you just want to jack cars, avoid 6 stars, and try to create GTA-unique random moments, it is the most realistic version GTA has ever created ... And you must not be a good wanderer of the GTA universe if you are complaining about the car physics, or you would have found sports cars that can turn on a dime, making high speed chase outcomes an easy thrill, not a nerve-racking mess (hint: Check the mansions at Firefly Island). What, a Pinto doesn't handle like a Porsche? Well, then go find the Porsche, dumb azz.
I've been trying to explain to video game fans who play everything but GTA why the franchise is ahead of everything else, and why it outsells everything else ... Idiots put in the disk, jack a couple cars, then crash them, and then take the disc out and go "what's the big deal?" Trust me, don't try bother converting these people ... They just aren't able to deal with a "game" with this much stuff in it. I mean, somebody tell me a current real TV show funnier than the supposedly filler mock TV shows you can watch in the game?
If this game is over your head, shame on you for not taking the time to see the jump the series was trying to make: San Andreas is a great sandbox game with several cool but pointless customizations, while GTA4 makes you actually feel bad for not calling an old friend from several years ago ... Too much of an investment for you, huh? That's fine. But admit that's why you aren't able to appreciate it ... Because even though the classic random GTA shootouts and mayhem is there, you can't deal with the fact the consequences feel worse when you do them ... Too bad. Don't worry, there's several fun but emotionless Hack and Slash games coming out this year and next. Enjoy!

There is nothing revolutionary or even particularly well-done about GTA 4. The gameplay and mechanics are pretty much the same as ever (which is to say not that great), the story is like a straight-to-video parody of every bad gangster film I've ever seen, and the graphics, despite the 10 from ign, are far from top of the line and in no way do they deserve that score. I can think of dozens of games that are more fun, have better stories, and better graphics than gta 4. Unfortuneately, these games dont have the benefit of Rockstar's multi-million dollar hype machine.
What a Waste

I love the GTA4 concept, but this game is a waste of time (and money). You spend all your time driving across town from mission to mission, rather than shooting bad guys and driving fast. And if you screw it up, then you get to drive across town to try again. Then, the game wants you to go on dates with various women you meet. (WTF!!??!) If I wanted to go on a date, I would do that instead of playing video games. Want more health? Well, you have to waste you time and find a diner for that. Most games just restore your health after a certain amount of time and get you back in the action. The controls are counter-intuitive and impossible to use as well. Basically, it looks like the designers spent their time pandering to the interests of oversexed 14-year-old boys and not enough time just creating a good game.
Kind of Boring and Hard to See Where You're Going

I have not played previous GTAs, and perhaps I should have continued that behavior. I enjoy most types of games, and GTA is reminiscent of that pretty old game "Police Quest" in its various incarnations.
I'm certain that this game is enjoyable for very young men and boys. But as for mature folks, it's frequently boring. Add to that the need to constantly check a map, which has teeny-weeny symbols showing you your location and destinations, it gives me a headache after less than an hour each time I play.
So if you like driving irresponsibly and talking with a Greek accent while you ogle cartoon women and beat up cartoon men, this is a must-have. Otherwise, I recommend all of the "Halos", and/or a good RPG like "Elder Scrolls" instead.
Just not fun to play

I rushed out to buy this. I found it really disappointing.
Generally it is not fun.
There is no car customization.
The cars don't drive well.
You don't take over territory and become a kingpin (at least as far as i've gone in the game)
sadly almost everything i really like about San Andreas is missing from this game. There are nice graphics. But the driving control is horrible. some cars can't take turns at at all. You there's no hydralics and other stuff. No custom paint.
the worst is you don't get to take territory and really become a kingpin. I loved that. You are and errand boy for most of the game and it's just uninteresting. i put the game back in the box for weeks. The old game i always wondered what was next. This one i didn't care.
All of liberty city looks visually the same. it's very monotone.
The storyline is really uninteresting unlike in san Andreas. You also don't have people to ride with you most of the game unless you be friends with people.
The relationship aspect is lame. this aspect is more like the sims and seriously why would a criminal want to be friendly. another thought. keeping cars is almost useless because you can lose them often after cut scenes end because they will disappear. they should have had garages that always store your car like Saints Row which didn't have the story but honestly had was a surprisingly more enjoyable game. I at least wanted to finish that. this game is just boring and bland.
Most of the reviews are spot on.

I had heard the budget on this game was 100 million dollars and it pretty much shows. As you have read in previous reviews the graphics are fantastic, it really lends itself to putting you inside Nico.
For those who have some trouble driving, try "in car" view makes it as easy to drive as any race game on the consoles. One of the many high adrenlin rush's of this game is hitting your reverse and flooring it while being pursued by the cops, You forget it's a game and it the adrenlin really does pump.
Being only a very casual player of the previous games in the franchise I think was a real plus for me, because this was not the same old same old. I'm not really a fan of this genre, but I am now.
This review is for the casual gamer. The hardcore people are already hitting the streets of Liberty city. If your not sure this is your cup of tea then rent it and you will know by the first few mentions that this is a very special video game. Thankyou Rockstar!

While visiting my friend out of state, GTA IV become available. Much to my surprise, it is not available for us poor suckers that only have a PS2. Luckily my friend has the PS3 and we went ahead and purchased it. We have been playing non-stop for the lat 48 hours. Overall this game is pretty decent.
With quick scene changes and a great storyline, this does hold the GTA fans interests. There is plenty to say about this game that we love but I do want to mention a few things that may turn you off. There are plenty of great reviews, so I wanted to bring a few things up to the possible purchaser.
The biggest thing we have heard through online forums is that the game has been freezing on about 50% of the people. It doesn't seem to matter if you have the PS version of Xbox. We have luckily not had this occur. Some people say it happen once and after reinstalling it went away, other have issues every 15 minutes. Looks like a hit and miss to me. Sony and Rockstar are looking into this matter as we speak.
The second issue is that some people have to compete the "Logging Online" mission before actually being able to play the multiplayer version. Are game forced us to play it but other friends did not. Not sure if there are different versions on this or not. People are having difficulties logging on and says it takes many times before being able to do it. The online experience is wonderful though once you are in there. Plenty of different missions to choose from which make it worth while.
You can not change your vehicle color and add rims like the older version. I do miss that but you really don't feel the need for it after awhile. The customization was something I missed but now I hardly think about it.
Okay, so there you have it. Overall game is great like I said before. Graphics are awesome and going in and out of buildings is flawless with no lag time. The only thing I can recommend for future version is please have the cops chase me after I blow a red light right in front of them! Now that would be sweet! Happy gaming everyone and I will see you online. ;o)
Wow... you'll have fun with this one...

GTA4 is an amazing game. It's especially fun in day-light, when you can see the city in all it's glory.
There's also cheat codes. You can unlock all weapons, armor, etc. Do a Google search.
You can aim a gun at an approaching car, and the driver ducks or shakes in fear, or gets out of the car and runs away. The game is very realistic. And running people over is more real than ever. You can hear and see the thud of the impact. It isn't pretty.
There's not much more to say... it's hard to put the game into words. Just play the game and enjoy, the fun is always there.
Must buy.
