For starters, the graphics are unbelievable on an HD flat screen. The online multiplayer is amazingly fun, especially with a couple friends. The game is long enough to where it's well worth the $60, and the map is big enough for you to just cruise around between missions and explore. The only thing is, Liberty City looks totally different, almost unrecognizable - they should have kept some of the same spots from GTA III. The car handling has been changed around a bit to give a more realistic feel, which is good (in a way) but I've found myself to be skidding out (crashing into buildings, people, poles, etc.) when driving too fast.. This is especially annoying when attempting to pursue an enemy. Overall though I'd give this game a 4 or 4.5 star rating just because it was extremely well-developed, and the online multiplayer will keep me coming back for a long, long time.
A Long Lasting Qaulity Title Worthy of the High Price

I'm always skeptical over games that receive high ratings especially when they are highly anticipated, this game is quite an exception.
Grand Theft Auto IV is a gritty game with a superb cast and talented voice acting. The graphics although great in many aspects are not as good as big wig reviews would like you to think. The lighting is superb at night from the cop cars glow to the city lights reflecting into the ocean.
The story begins with a Eastern European man named Nico, he is upon a ship traveling to Liberty City to fulfill the American dream. After hearing of his cousins success he too wanted in, only to find out luxury was nothing more then a cruel lie. Nico hides much of his background, the further you progress the more his mysterious back round is revealed. It's never too late to find paradise, but how far and what decisions have to be made to justify this?
Just like previous GTA's before it you can steal cars, evade cops, go on hot pursuits and even spend some leisure time in the New York based city. The emphasis of the game is to drive around completing objective based 'missions' and slowly work your way up into the respectable ranks of Liberty City's underground.
While some of the old light RPG elements from
San Andreas are absent many new features are present. The game is very open ended and very long, long games for next gen consoles have all but become a rarity. With a 60$ price tag a long lasting game should be key to success, and GTA IV is indeed successful in fulfilling this. The game offers many side objectives and pleasureful things to pursue, from bowling to playing billiards to going the 'internet'. You can even sit back and watch some t.v. So many little details are what really add to the lively experience one will come to see in the city's depths. The citizens speak to one another, some fight back when their car is being taken, you must hot wire some cars, being able to hear the bass sub woofers shooting sounds out of the car from a distance. You can obtain phone numbers on your phone and create little dates to go on, or meet up with friends of the city. The cars even have a GPS system! A variety of cars and guns and some helicopters are at your disposal mix some cheat codes in and welcome destruction.
Liberty City has a grimy underside though, full of hookers, drug trade,
murders, heavy cussing, mobster/gang turf, strip clubs, alcohol abuse and many other things to give for a tainted feeling. Not exactly the kid friendly ground, parents should keep weary of this title unless they have a mature kid and even then look out.
The last thing I'll mention is the online supremacist. The online is brilliant, but often times clunky in some areas. Online has a lot of multiplayer modes to choose from and some slight character customization's options. You can free roam with friends or pit each other in a fight to the death. The Cops and Robbers variant is amazing where two teams are split and robbers obviously must endure waves of cops to reach their destination.
GTA IV has a little bit of a frame rate problem, some popping up objects while driving, and sometimes a clunky online interface, but over all the game is moving, violent, and awesomely varied. The story is movie worthy,
the hours put in this game are hours well spent for a game. This title is a must buy, I really didn't want to write a review as so many have already beamed the highlights but it's such a good title!
Good fun but overrated!

Don't get me wrong on this review this is not a bad game. It is my opinion that it has been over hyped and over rated. Basically you get in this game what all the other GTA games offer. That being the ability to live the life of a criminal which to some people nowdays that seems to be the only ambition in life they have. So wht more can you ask for in a video game that you get weapons, cars, hookers, strip clubs, drinking and dope smoking. Now the fun aspect is being able to do this without real consequence to your self and others unless you are some moron that goes out and tries to be Niko for real then you deserve what ever you get. That is the difference between entertainment and reality my friends. This game is overall fun and fairly easy to play and the graphics are great.
doesn't come close to the hype

there are some very impressive elements to this game, but all and all, i just don't see what everyone is so thrilled about. The gameplay is fair, the mini games are tolerable, but not much more. Good weapon choice. good vehicle choice, i like the open play format (as much as i did the other games in the series) and the maps are HUGE. but, it's not a good shooter, it's not a good driving sim (or arcade), it's not a good strategy game, and it's not a good action game. it's not, weak - just mediocre.
BOTTOM LINE: the game is flat. it doesn't have any real WOW to it. Also, it probably goes with out saying, but don't let kids even watch this game, let alone play it. The rating is on the box for good reason. pay attention to it.
ehhh...

It's alright. The graphics are amazing, but the gameplay gets old really fast. I just don't find it as enjoyable as the previous installments in this franchise. The camera angles while driving are terrible also. Plus it is difficult to turn your character around. he moves real slow and is very uncoordinated.
OK, not sure what the hype was all about

Way too much hype for this game. Its alright but nothing spectacular. Missions are pretty much the same throughout and gets boring after awhile. Way too many simulated violence and swearing. Not needed at all for a good game. If they ever come out with a GTA5 I'm pretty sure I won't get it.
Same Old with a Plus!

GTA IV is a great installment in the GTA franchise. Defiantly worth the wait, GTA IV brings a brand new story to the next-gen consoles. But I don't think that it's worth all of the hype. It could have been more customizable, with better weapons (I mean come on, they've basically have been the same since Vice), and better vehicles (A car being the coolest vehicle in the game? Pretty sad). It is a good game, but it feels like I've played it already compared to Vice City and San Andreas.
Personally, I think they should have just used the same engine as San Andreas (with all of the customizable glory) and added new features that were in this game.
But there is one good thing out of this GTA game, MULTIPLAYER! The Xbox Live on this game is amazing, but does get boring at times. But still, the Multiplayer gave this review another star.
Game of the decade.

I've never stood in line for the release of anything, let alone a video game until last night and I'm damn glad I did. This is hands down the best game I've ever played in my life. It's difficult to discribe how amazing this game is, you just have to play it to see. I've only gotten through around 5 or 6 percent of the single player mode, and played about 4 hours total on the multiplayer and I'm already completely sucked into this one. If you didn't care for any of the previous games in the series I'd still strongly suggest at the very least renting it since they addressed just about every issue from the last generation games some people couldn't seem to look past. It's a truly amazing gaming experience just running around absorbing the sights and sounds of the city, the rediculous behavior of the pedestrians who fill it, let alone getting your hands dirty with the missions and excellent online multiplayer. I heard in a video review some guy saying that this game would be worth paying $300 let alone $60 and as rediculous as it sounds, I totally agree. I'd pay that if that's what they were asking, it's truly that good.
I want a refund

First, before all the fanboys start shredding me, let me say that I'm an AVID FAN of the other members in the GTA series. Yes, the visuals are stunning, and the music playlist is quite extensive (although not nearly as good as playlists past for whatever reason). The gameplay is nothing like previous GTA. The newer more realistic physics are cool, but why the hell do I have to fall on the ground every time I throw a molotov cocktail and get hit with some back draft? Before, you would get hurt of course, but you could at least run it off, you weren't forced to fall to the ground and more often than not, roll in the flames that set you on fire in the first place. Make sense? Who would roll into the flames? Also, there's some things that I liked to be unbelievable, like the weapon switch time, not so realistic in the past. And why can't I throw a grenade without having to lock onto someone, if you do so, he throws it behind himself. ????!!!!! Behind himself? What???? Why????? And WTF happend to being able to pop in a cheat on the fly, (if thats your thing and i know people who do that) now you have to have a phone and you have to go through menus to get to it? And the thing with the cheats was, when you didn't want to deal with the cops, you punched in your little lower wanted cheat anywhere anytime no matter what was happening and you were in the clear. Now if you 're accessing the friggin phone and you get shot, you have to start back over again at the beginning with pulling up the phone and the menu. Why?? What for?? the point of the cheats was to cheat. And as much as i like the great expansion on Liberty City, I don't recognize any of it. I feel like its lost some of the things that make it memorable. There is NOTHING that rings a bell. Except for, of course, some of the restaurants, shops, product placements, things like that. But really, it feels more like Resident Evil 4 minus the zombies. and its just not as fun. If I could return it I would. Give me III, Vice City, San Andreas, etc. any day.
A Great Game

...For Adults that is, I can't imagine any parent letting a child under 15 or so even be in the same room as this game. That being said, this game is fantastic and I really enjoy playing it. I am just scratching the surface but what a surface. I plan to keep this in the tray for a good long time to come!
