When I first heard of this game, I have to admit I was a bit disappointed at first, although the thought of licensed cars with licensed performance parts did appeal to me. I've been a fan of the NFS series since it started, and I have to admit that this game does the series justice, even though it strays from the original NFS formula.
First off, it's has more of an arcade feel as opposed to a true sim. There is no cockpit view, and you don't suffer any damage when you crash. This does not deter from enjoyment of the game, however. The different race types in Underground mode keep you interested in the game. There is the Sprint race (drive from point A to point b), Circuit race (drive around the city on a "track" for an "X" number of laps, Drag race (where you just concentrate on shifting properly, and being in the right lane), and the Drift competition. If you keep up with the tuner scene, you'll know what this is. It's pretty fun and challenging to say the least.
Online mode let's you compete in circuit races against online opponents. I've tried it a few times, and it's fun. You hop up your car with all the bonuses you've unlocked in Underground mode. A word of warning... make sure you've got some decent hopups on your car before trying it, or you'll get dusted off the line!
The best effects in the game are the "tunnel vision" effects created when you hit over 110 MPH. everything starts to blur and bounce around as you hit that magic speed. It looks just like the race scenes out of 2F2F, and it's well done! If you have a fast CPU and good graphics card, crank up the resolution! Kudos to EA... this game is worthy of the NFS label.
Surprisingly addicting

I wouldn't call myself a "racing" expert like some of the other reviewers. So I can't say if the "handling" is realistic or not. But I can say that I'm not generally a big racing game kind of guy, but this game is truly addicting.
It seems like most car games you race to win upgrades or trophy money or something. I was skeptical of the fast n furious style and whether that machismo culture would keep me interested. Well, sadly enough, it really has. Sure I wanted performance upgrades, but pretty soon I was more interested in unlocking tail pipe modifications and roof scoops. (some of the advertising decals are a bit cheesy though).
I like playing in "bumper cam" view, where it really feels like I'm in the car (my favorite games are first-person shooters). I feel like a big dork but it really is an adrenaline rush. If you're going to play this game, it's definitely worth your while to get some analog input device, like a joystick, gamepad, or wheel. Using the keyboard just doesn't cut it.
Overall, I think it's a rush to play and it's a lot more fun than I ever expected modifying my car.

This game is said to be similar to the previous NFS game called Motor City Online because in this you will be racing for Money and buying new parts to upgrade you vehicle. After reviewing the NFSU web site i think that this will be a game thats well worth the money
Retains the NFS spirit

Need For Speed Underground - Borrows physics engine from NFS HP2 but is updated a little. But this rendition is unlike any other NFS. In NFSU you have ability to customize and really personalize your ride changing and upgrading visuals (rims, lights, etc) & performance respectively.
Graphics 4.8/5 Realistic reflections on all shiny surfaces
Sound 4.5/5 Nice music from Rap, Techno, and rock genres (about 24 tracks total)
Gameplay 4.4/5 Retains NFS feel and adds such minute details such as Near Miss, drafting, powersliding, and clean section. Reminds me of Burnout 2. More modes such as drifting and drag. You really feel the speed with the audio and vibrations.
Cons: Shoddy menus system, NO DAMAGE (NFS4 had it but why not here?), NO POLICE (no hot pursuit mode :-( ), No personalized Liscense plates) No replay which is a real disappointment because some of the "stunts" are really hot. No split screen. (NFS4 had it)
so disappointing!! worst racing game, ever!!

Apart from graphics and sound, this game is nothing. Why? First of all, as for a racing game, the control is so NOT real!! The cars handle like toys. Next, the game is the least close racing game of EA, ever! Computer players cheat all the time. God knows how they change lanes that fast and cut corners without slowing down! Last and the dumbest, some traffic is made for blocking your car only, believe me!!
I suggest EA either fire your current AI programmers or hire them some psychiatrists.
For those who still wanna buy this game after reading my comments, good luck!
Think about it didn`t you thought of street racing?

Welcome to the underground, you will have the chance to: create and costume your own car, race 110 races, and feel the speed like never before. Starting as no one you`l borrow a car and proobe if you are whorty, if you are Samantha (your coach) will make you race whit some dudes whit a car of your choise including: Dodge neon, 206 Peugeot, Golf GTI and many more. If you win you will get: money, stile points, new cars and acces to cool car acessories and upgrades.
This game is really whort it, you should think of buyng it, if you dare to race the toughest racers in town in 4 difernt ways of racing: sprint, drag, darrape and the clasic circuit.
There are some things that are not so impressive...like the maps, they are the same but inverted o things like that but don`t get dissapointed there are like 50 maps o more. The graphics also.. not the cars but the traffic and the buildings are ok...
If you really want hours of fun and a good cuality game that can be playede online here you go. To really play the game at full capacity choouse the hard way and you`l be amazed by the IA.
If you have a slow computer y don`t think there be much speed underground

If you like to fool around with boring games this is for you. The game sucks. It has horrible graphics and it is too hard to drive the slow goofy looking cars. It is a horrible game and it is not worth a penny.

This product is made to be played on a computer!
I bought it, thinking my godson could play it in his Play Station II. He can't. He tried it in his computer, but at age 9 and with minimal computer skills, he's dissappointed.
Moral of this story: check really, really carefully when you buy these kinds of games. I'm a little older & wiser.
