I'm not a big fan of football, indeed I only have watched a few superbowls on tv. My friends convinced me to buy this game and so I did. In the beginning, I couldn't understand the purpose of the different types of formations so my friends had a wild time beating my ass off with 0-45 scores. I was frustrated but after playing the Training mode I found this game so much more fun. There are plenty of options and customizable features such as the create-a-team feature which are, in my opinion, the juice of the game.
The graphics are superb and the multiplayer feature is just excellent. The PS2 hasn't got many good multiplayer games but the EA's sports series are the best of the best.
This is one of the best games for the PS2 (and any other console) around.
Graphics, playing modes- yes. But not much else.

Madden 2002 is an improvement over 2001 in many ways, especially graphics. They are crisper, less slowdown. Visually, it's a great game. I also like the playing modes, the fact that you can draft players uploaded from EA's NCAA Football game. That's great that you can bring players up all the way from the college level.
But....as has happened before in the Madden series, we've taken a step backward in gameplay. I remember in Madden 2001, I used to have passing dogfights with human counterparts. The passing game would be dominated by whoever wanted the ball more. You HAD to switch to the receiver/defensive back involved in the play, or you wouldn't make the reception or you wouldn't keep your opponent from making the reception. The game rewarded you for actually try to make your own plays in the passing game without CPU assistance, making it feel like the best player was winning the battle, as well as making the game more fun.
In 2002, the CPU is superior 9 times out of 10 in a passing play. It's smarter to let the CPU make plays for you, both offensively and defensively. Therefore, if you are on offense, and you want to run a passing play- you simply push a button to snap the ball, push a button to throw, and hope for the best. If you try and toggle control to the receiver, the CPU defender will beat you to the ball most every time. Also, there have been times when other CPU defenders, who aren't even visible on the screen at screen at the time of the throw, will run underneath the play and intercept the pass, without any buttons actually being pushed by the defensive player. The same problems exist when you're defending. The CPU controlled offensive receiver will beat you most times. And to make matters worse, in trying to make a play on the ball, you've gotten yourself out of any position to make a tackle, and the CPU controlled receiver is running for an easy touchdown after the catch. That's just not fun, and it doesn't reward the BETTER player. I'm a Madden Vet, been playing since 91, and in the 2002 version, I'm getting beat by players who have only played the game a handful of times. Rookies of this series should not be able to handle the veterans like this. The people at EA need to go back and look at problems like these before 2003 comes out in the fall. If they don't, then I'm neither buying the game, or playing it.

I have played all of the Maddens since its conception on the Sega Genesis. Madden 2002 is the creme of the crop. Finally, the AI is a worthy opponent for the single player and the multiplayer is top notch. Make your own team down to the color of the socks in Create-a-team mode or build a dynasty in franchise mode. I have had this game since its release date and have played about 75 games. There is still so much new to learn. Buy it! NOW!
Madden just gets better and better.

I'll admit, I was skeptical about how in the world they could improve on a game like 2001. That was the best video game I had ever played, but then I got my hands on this one. The football is so much more real, the movements are much less robotic than 2001, you can't beat the computer with the same plays over and over and over again, I mean this is a true strategy based football game, and that is just playing a single game. One thing that I do think should be added is the ability to create your own plays, and I think that whoever rated the ability of the players was a bit harsh on some people, especially the rookies, but hey, that's life, they have to earn it. Overall, the best game I've played, and the best football game ever...or at least till they come out with 2003.
Thanks EA Sports. Madden 2002 Rules........................

Please disregard my earlier review. I was able to rent the game and their was all kinds of options in the game that nobody mentioned and that was not even stated on the Box. Frankly if Ea Sports can be found guilty of anything, is that they did a poor Job listing all the Great new improvements they made. Even if you go to their web page, their is very little to shed light on this title. The Graphic's are preaty much the same, slightly improved and the sound bites are the same. However their are a lot of new options. You can now save a game in progress, and you can save a replay to your memory card if you have 1 meg free. This Game does offer a Situation Game. You can set the score, time left, where on the field, how many time outs left against your choice of team and then play the game in progress. This option is fun, and you can save these situation games to your memory cards also, and they take up 500K each. People that like this option and replays, better plan on getting some extra memory cards cause one will not cut it. There is really only one thing left about this game that really bothers me. The fact that the AI. can make a illegal kick off, and not get a penalty flag. But if you kick a illegal kick, you get a flag every time. I don't understand. The added and improved annimation is nice, but the game does still have Anti-allison video flaws. The screen does flicker at times and becomes anoying. You would think they could fix this flaw, but it hasn't been addressed yet. I noticed that the defenses are faster and more wise, and i did notice one nice feature here. In 2001 version if the AI. team was behind just before half time or late in the fourth quarter, that the Hurry no huddle offense created problems with your teammates getting offside penalty's because they couldn't line up fast enough. That was very anoying, but has been fixed in this 2002 version. All in all i give this 4 out of 5 Stars. I think most
people will like the improvements. Not perfect yet, but they are getting closer. Enjoy the Game...
Good? Yes. Great? No

I've had this game ofr a while now so I can write a review knowing that I know what I'm talking about. Madden 2002 is a really good looking, fun game. Every time I lay off it for a few days then come back to it I am suprised how good it looks. But there are a few things that really bug me. 1- It seems like the conmputer can do thing that you can never do. The computer's defense almost always seems to get in between you and the ball and your defense hardly ever does. So in turn the computer's reciever's are wide open more often than yours. 2-Another thing that is really lame is that if you throw the ball too hard your reciever won't catch it. I mean c'mon in real life players catch hard passes, and if they don't they get benched. 3- I also hate the fact that if you bump into the back of a defensive player you fall down; they tackle you without even trying! 4-Another thing that sucks is that your special teams hardly ever block on punt returns.5-It doesn't seem like it matters how fast and how big the tackler is compared to the tacklee when you tackle somebody. And I wish you could do multi-player tackles. That would be really fun and increase fumbles. I know there are other things I don't like but I cant remember them right now. But regardless of all that this is probably the best football game ever, well its at least the best game I've ever played. So i do like this game alot but the more you play the more the little things will bug you.

I love Football games, and I have always bought 989 Football games. This is my first Madden game, and it is unbeleiveable! The graphics are great, and the players expression's are great too!
I am very happy with all of the game's modes! One drawback is that the passing is extremely difficult, and it doesn't matter if you're on easy or hard mode. There have been several times where I have had Toomer (NY Giants) wide open, and he has dropped the pass! But overall, this game is excellent!
Its In The GAME!

As soon as you play Madden 2002, dont be surprised if you pants get a little wet. No game will ever make you feel the way Madden does. The graphics are wonderful, the gameplay is tight, and the control is perfect. Madden 2002 is perfectly designed for the PS2 system. Its a must buy for any gamer and an instant blow for all of the die hard football fans.

Overall it's a great game, but the reason it doesn't get that 1/8 star is because of the offensive AI playcalling at the end of games. It doesn't seem to realize that if you're losing with 20 seconds to go and you're at your own 20, that you should run a pass play. On the 50% chance that it does run a pass play, it's often no where near the side line, not to mention 5-8 yards. Well it does that on the "pro" setting (3rd hardest...aka...2nd easiest) so maybe it would try a little harder if it were on a harder setting. Two minute drill is cool and training mode also teaches you specifically how to run a specific play, which is also cool. Overall, Madden 2002 is a great game.
