As a female gamer, I get sick of the combat games. I liked the fact that this game, for a change, had no combat. It's one big puzzle where you pick up everything you can along the way and then figure out where to use your items. It's VERY challenging. My sister and I got stuck once in a while because there was an item we missed, but you can go back through the towers you have unlocked to get anything you overlooked. My brother quickly got frustrated and quit, but my sister and I stayed up all night and finished the game. I loved it and hope they make more like it! If you're looking for combat, you won't like it. But if you like puzzles, this game is one big puzzle filled with smaller ones! Finally, a game that is all about using your brain and all your creativity to solve it!
Fun game

I enjoyed this game where I was a character locked in a dungeon, had to find my way out and then around castle Shadowgate to finally meet up with the main bad guy. This is not a slash around killing game, it is a puzzle and thinking game. You walk around picking up things, talking to people, doing things a certain way to see what happens. You can get killed in this game, so be sure to save often, your last save point is where you will start again if you are killed. You need a memory card to save with this game! I did get stuck in the game several times, at least 3 times and had to write to Nintendo to find out how to proceed! But with their help I made it to the very end. This game is appropriate for children that can read, as you must read to play the game, and there is no goulish violence.
BAM!

Had lots of jam time going thru this, but I had online help to get thru some parts. I got this as a rental to check it out. With walkthru, still took me 7 hrs. in 2 days to get thru to the end. Found myself getting turned the wrong way in some sections. Cool graphics. I'll pick this one up and try without the walkthru.

Shadowgate is more of a puzzle solving challenge and not for anyone who has no determination in their sole. It offers variety in matter and can absorb you in the puzzle solving process. Interesting characters and areas to explore, with something to accomplish in each. I recommend it for all ages that like to think or use their mind.
Its a challenge to your common sense!

the game is very challenging there is no one on one combat per say but you must use your thought process & common sense. In this game what you see is what you get! You must use all you find to help you escape the tattered dungeon in which you lay!
The best game I have ever played!

Finaly a game that uses your brain. I admit that I like games like Mortal Combat, but how many times are you going to beat someone to a pulp! If you don't have the brains of a monkey, you won't like this game. You will never get past the jail cell. But if you do, you, like me, will love this game.
Not for everyone, but it was for me!

First off, if all you want from a game is to pick up a gun and kill stuff, you won't like it. But if your idea of fun is a great puzzle that challenges you in every way to put it together, you will eat this game up. It never gets slow or boring, trust me,it will keep your interest all the way thru. It is challenging and above all else, fun. This was a great follow up to the original, which to me was the greatest r.p.g. ever. I hope this isn't the last of the series, I heard about a sequel called "Shadowgate Rising" that had been planned, then shelved. I hope they pick it back up again,it sounded like a fun game. This one definitely is!
Well, since you twist my brain like that...

Ah yes, at last a proper puzzle game such as Myst on a dedicated console! This game does not deliver much by way of graphics, however, the puzzles are enaging, and i'm buying this game based entirely on its music, which is excellent. The puzzles put dungeons and dragons players to shame.
How the hell can people say this game is bad?!

Playing Shadowgate 64 was my first time playing any Shadowgate game....and I gotta say, this sure was fun as hell.
It's like a first-person shooter....but....not. You're in first person mode, and you go around searching for clues in the castle. Doesn't sound like fun, right? Wrong. The graphics are beautiful and the levels are nicely done and full of goodies. Going around solving the game's many puzzles isn't tedious in any way....it's a joy, and it's a journey many should take the time to take.
Sure, the game has a few downsides....one being that your guy walks around like a lumbering beast. Slow as hell. And then the other is that there were a few times I died cheap....like thinking I would be able to swim, jumping into the water, and immediately drowning, because obviously elves didn't get the poolside lessons....lol. Oh well, though, it was actually good for a laugh. Just save your game often, and get this game now!!!
Overall, 9 out of 10, a solid title to add to your N64 collection.
A Great Game

Hey people, combat games get boring and this is just what you need. Why blow things and people up all the time when you can do something that will help you in real life? The original Shadowgate game had just a little combat, not all that much, and this game is just what the 64 needed and still needs. After renting it I was hooked and once I buy it, I will not rest until I beat this game. The puzzles are tricky and you have to be observant or else you won't even get out of the jail cell in the beginning. Collect almost everything, save often, put your mind to the test, and have fun!
