OK, so there's probably not much point in writing a review for such an old game, but, the game is so good I figured why not. Basically, this game is just like Shadowgate and/or Deja Vu for the NES, except the puzzles are now slightly more logical. The game has the single best soundtrack I have ever heard, and I've played a lot of games. The soundtrack is truly medieval and it sets the tone perfectly for each area in the game. The graphics aren't much, but they really are perfect for this game {dark and grim}. Gameplay mostly consists of puzzles and/or doing side tasks required to advance. Puzzles can vary from easy to hard, so it's a good mix of challenge and fun. Overall it's just a great game, I can't really explain in words why I love it so much.....so you'll just have to get it and find out yourself!

gettin a kick out of this!

I was a little skeptical when I started, for the game seemed to get off on the wrong one foot with the really slow moves, and no action. But as I went along I seemed to discover there was more thought to put into the game! I did in fact wish I had paid more attention to mountain climbing class and swimming lessons. Yes, I did get across that after an unenthusiastic FIVE HOURS!!!!!!! I guess that they are obstacles I'll just have to overcome. Although, I did get a laugh out of the really pathetic ways I died over and over again. I mean, who knew that Del can't swim, or when he jumps of a really high ledge he goes "wheeeeeeeeeee!" *splat* Yea, I suspect there will just be a passage way to purgatory in the next game. Over all, I have to admit it was worth it, and even though it took me forever to master the art of the cleverness needed for the game, it was fun! And did I say it took me forever? I meant to say it took me forever *cough* and after that! *cough* Now I have vision haunting me of the night I dreamed I died because I stepped on a mouse in the game... *shiver*

I Waited 7 Years to Play it, and for the Most Part, I Wasn't Disappointed.

I remember the first Shadowgate for the nes when I first played it back in 92. But I was really young, and it's gameplay was too difficult for me to understand. 7 Years after that, Shadowgate 64 came out, and despite how I had bad memories of Shadowgate from my early years, I felt that I wanted to play a new version. It took me until just a fwe days ago to actually play the game, 7 years after it was released.

This game has no action, learn that now. I knew there was no action before playing it and yet I still desired to play the game. So, if there is no action, what do you do? Good Question. Basically you traverse through a huge castle and the surrounding areas picking up anything that you can. Many objects can be used, others are useless junk that serves no purpose. But it's wize to gather everything you can because you never know what you will and won't use sometime later. Besides picking up objects, you have to solve some very difficult puzzles, learn the story and history through literature you pick up and through the characters( both hostile and docile) you encounter. I heard many major reviews from professionals stating that you have no contact with any other characters. That is false, there are many ghosts of the past and people of the present throughout the complex of Castle Shadowgate that you will have to talk to in order to progress. The story is very good in my opinion, I'll leave it up to you to learn what it's about. As far as the graphics go, they are terrible. Muddy textures, poorly designed character models and over used fog effects plague this game from begining to end. But does that really matter? To me, no it doesn't, because the game is unique, entertaining and challenging. I love reading through the books because, honestly, the literature is written very well and always manages to paint a picture in your mind. Another big letdown is the sound, or lack of much sound effects. Music can be ok at some points, but there are times when it's very repetitive, to the point of annoyance actually. Another drawback is that it is pretty short. Once it's over, you'll be disappointed that it ended so soon because it really is a good game. There was a sequel to follow but unfortuantely, like many n64 games, it never came to fruition. In the end, it would be a shame if this is the last video game to bare the Shadowgate name because there is so much more that can be done and is to be desired by fans of such an overlooked hiddem gem among video games.

If you can find this game, I would suggest giving it a try, you might just like it!

I think this is one of the best RPG Games evermade. I've enjoyed many RPG Games like Pokemon, Zelda, Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy, (I will not Include Final Fantasy X-2)! Golden Sun 1 and 2 and Wizardry! But mainly I think this is one of the best RPG games evermade!

How the hell can people say this game is bad?!

Playing Shadowgate 64 was my first time playing any Shadowgate game....and I gotta say, this sure was fun as hell.
It's like a first-person shooter....but....not. You're in first person mode, and you go around searching for clues in the castle. Doesn't sound like fun, right? Wrong. The graphics are beautiful and the levels are nicely done and full of goodies. Going around solving the game's many puzzles isn't tedious in any way....it's a joy, and it's a journey many should take the time to take.

Sure, the game has a few downsides....one being that your guy walks around like a lumbering beast. Slow as hell. And then the other is that there were a few times I died cheap....like thinking I would be able to swim, jumping into the water, and immediately drowning, because obviously elves didn't get the poolside lessons....lol. Oh well, though, it was actually good for a laugh. Just save your game often, and get this game now!!!

Overall, 9 out of 10, a solid title to add to your N64 collection.

Well, since you twist my brain like that...

Ah yes, at last a proper puzzle game such as Myst on a dedicated console! This game does not deliver much by way of graphics, however, the puzzles are enaging, and i'm buying this game based entirely on its music, which is excellent. The puzzles put dungeons and dragons players to shame.

Fun game

I enjoyed this game where I was a character locked in a dungeon, had to find my way out and then around castle Shadowgate to finally meet up with the main bad guy. This is not a slash around killing game, it is a puzzle and thinking game. You walk around picking up things, talking to people, doing things a certain way to see what happens. You can get killed in this game, so be sure to save often, your last save point is where you will start again if you are killed. You need a memory card to save with this game! I did get stuck in the game several times, at least 3 times and had to write to Nintendo to find out how to proceed! But with their help I made it to the very end. This game is appropriate for children that can read, as you must read to play the game, and there is no goulish violence.

Mindblowing Entertainment

Many of the games released today are games made for the stereotypical boy. What I mean by that is, games made are sports games, combat games, and games with little puzzles and such. As a female gamer, I do love games that actually require brain usage, instead of the superficial "I'm bigger, faster, and stronger than you are!" Shadowgate 64 is an amazingly big puzzle, and it requires you to look at every nook and crany, and to use imagination and creativity. Yes the game is difficult, but who doesn't like a challenge? Many male gamers like games that don't require them to do too much thinking, but instead being able to finish the game quickly and play it over again. Some male gamers will buy or rent a game like Shadowgate 64 and find it to hard and give up quickly. But this game requires you to stick with it, to use your brain, and to pay attention. I haven't beaten the game yet, but so far it has been amazing. The graphics are beautiful, and the dialogue is amazingly written. This game is realistic, yet it pulls you into a fantasy world thats hard to leave.
Buy this game if you love games that are all strategy, no combat (which is a big plus) and games that make you use your gray matter and creativity. But if you do buy it, don't forget to get a Controller Pak if you don't already own one. (I made that mistake once..its too painful). This game is mindblowing and capturing. Period.

the best video game ever created in the entire world....

I loved this game! It is great for fantasy/puzzle game lovers. It is a great game that you can put your mind into and have a lot of fun with. It challenges you right from the start. The very first thing you must do is figure how to get out of a jail cell! I knew this would be a great game from the moment I started it. Also, if you liked this, I would reccomend any fantasy PC game (which i play a lot of)------Diablo & Diablo 2, Baldurs Gate & Baldurs Gate 2, etc. Get this game!
