The most boring game ever.

the graphics are not very impressive, everything looks kind ofblocky and moves badly. the game play is extremely boring, you have togather items and use them on other items or in certain situations, but there is absolutely no action or fighting. it is the most boring game I have ever played, I'm only glad that I got it as a trade in on another game and could trade it back for something that was cool and only be out five bucks.

BAM!

Had lots of jam time going thru this, but I had online help to get thru some parts. I got this as a rental to check it out. With walkthru, still took me 7 hrs. in 2 days to get thru to the end. Found myself getting turned the wrong way in some sections. Cool graphics. I'll pick this one up and try without the walkthru.

A great puzzle!

As a female gamer, I get sick of the combat games. I liked the fact that this game, for a change, had no combat. It's one big puzzle where you pick up everything you can along the way and then figure out where to use your items. It's VERY challenging. My sister and I got stuck once in a while because there was an item we missed, but you can go back through the towers you have unlocked to get anything you overlooked. My brother quickly got frustrated and quit, but my sister and I stayed up all night and finished the game. I loved it and hope they make more like it! If you're looking for combat, you won't like it. But if you like puzzles, this game is one big puzzle filled with smaller ones! Finally, a game that is all about using your brain and all your creativity to solve it!

Shadowgate is more of a puzzle solving challenge and not for anyone who has no determination in their sole. It offers variety in matter and can absorb you in the puzzle solving process. Interesting characters and areas to explore, with something to accomplish in each. I recommend it for all ages that like to think or use their mind.

Its a challenge to your common sense!

the game is very challenging there is no one on one combat per say but you must use your thought process & common sense. In this game what you see is what you get! You must use all you find to help you escape the tattered dungeon in which you lay!

Fun game

I enjoyed this game where I was a character locked in a dungeon, had to find my way out and then around castle Shadowgate to finally meet up with the main bad guy. This is not a slash around killing game, it is a puzzle and thinking game. You walk around picking up things, talking to people, doing things a certain way to see what happens. You can get killed in this game, so be sure to save often, your last save point is where you will start again if you are killed. You need a memory card to save with this game! I did get stuck in the game several times, at least 3 times and had to write to Nintendo to find out how to proceed! But with their help I made it to the very end. This game is appropriate for children that can read, as you must read to play the game, and there is no goulish violence.

How the hell can people say this game is bad?!

Playing Shadowgate 64 was my first time playing any Shadowgate game....and I gotta say, this sure was fun as hell.
It's like a first-person shooter....but....not. You're in first person mode, and you go around searching for clues in the castle. Doesn't sound like fun, right? Wrong. The graphics are beautiful and the levels are nicely done and full of goodies. Going around solving the game's many puzzles isn't tedious in any way....it's a joy, and it's a journey many should take the time to take.

Sure, the game has a few downsides....one being that your guy walks around like a lumbering beast. Slow as hell. And then the other is that there were a few times I died cheap....like thinking I would be able to swim, jumping into the water, and immediately drowning, because obviously elves didn't get the poolside lessons....lol. Oh well, though, it was actually good for a laugh. Just save your game often, and get this game now!!!

Overall, 9 out of 10, a solid title to add to your N64 collection.

I Waited 7 Years to Play it, and for the Most Part, I Wasn't Disappointed.

I remember the first Shadowgate for the nes when I first played it back in 92. But I was really young, and it's gameplay was too difficult for me to understand. 7 Years after that, Shadowgate 64 came out, and despite how I had bad memories of Shadowgate from my early years, I felt that I wanted to play a new version. It took me until just a fwe days ago to actually play the game, 7 years after it was released.

This game has no action, learn that now. I knew there was no action before playing it and yet I still desired to play the game. So, if there is no action, what do you do? Good Question. Basically you traverse through a huge castle and the surrounding areas picking up anything that you can. Many objects can be used, others are useless junk that serves no purpose. But it's wize to gather everything you can because you never know what you will and won't use sometime later. Besides picking up objects, you have to solve some very difficult puzzles, learn the story and history through literature you pick up and through the characters( both hostile and docile) you encounter. I heard many major reviews from professionals stating that you have no contact with any other characters. That is false, there are many ghosts of the past and people of the present throughout the complex of Castle Shadowgate that you will have to talk to in order to progress. The story is very good in my opinion, I'll leave it up to you to learn what it's about. As far as the graphics go, they are terrible. Muddy textures, poorly designed character models and over used fog effects plague this game from begining to end. But does that really matter? To me, no it doesn't, because the game is unique, entertaining and challenging. I love reading through the books because, honestly, the literature is written very well and always manages to paint a picture in your mind. Another big letdown is the sound, or lack of much sound effects. Music can be ok at some points, but there are times when it's very repetitive, to the point of annoyance actually. Another drawback is that it is pretty short. Once it's over, you'll be disappointed that it ended so soon because it really is a good game. There was a sequel to follow but unfortuantely, like many n64 games, it never came to fruition. In the end, it would be a shame if this is the last video game to bare the Shadowgate name because there is so much more that can be done and is to be desired by fans of such an overlooked hiddem gem among video games.

If you can find this game, I would suggest giving it a try, you might just like it!

OK, so there's probably not much point in writing a review for such an old game, but, the game is so good I figured why not. Basically, this game is just like Shadowgate and/or Deja Vu for the NES, except the puzzles are now slightly more logical. The game has the single best soundtrack I have ever heard, and I've played a lot of games. The soundtrack is truly medieval and it sets the tone perfectly for each area in the game. The graphics aren't much, but they really are perfect for this game {dark and grim}. Gameplay mostly consists of puzzles and/or doing side tasks required to advance. Puzzles can vary from easy to hard, so it's a good mix of challenge and fun. Overall it's just a great game, I can't really explain in words why I love it so much.....so you'll just have to get it and find out yourself!

The best game I have ever played!

Finaly a game that uses your brain. I admit that I like games like Mortal Combat, but how many times are you going to beat someone to a pulp! If you don't have the brains of a monkey, you won't like this game. You will never get past the jail cell. But if you do, you, like me, will love this game.
