If you can get one game this month.....

If you can get one game this month get Resident Evil: Code Veronica. But Carrier is close behind. The only reson you shouldn't get this game is if you are on a money crunch! Still try to get this as much as possible. I love this game. The GRAPHICS are clean and sharp. This makes Blue Stinger look like a bunch of *#%$&@%! The CONTROLS are ok. They are EXTREMLY similar to Resident Evil. The SOUND is AWESOME! When you walk on squishy ground it sounds like squishy ground. The replay value is about the same as other games of this genre. This is a great leap in the Survival Horror genre. It is a strong competetor for RE series and blows every one else AWAY. This is a must buy even for people who don't like or aren't familiar to this genre.

don't pass this one up.

of course the best way to describe CARRIER is to say that it's resident evil on an aircraft carrier but what sets this game apart from capcom's hit francise, is that the graphics are brilliant thanks to the DREAMCAST'S capabilities. not only are some of the backgrounds prerendered, but they can pan in/out on the fly at times.

the concept of CARRIER is more or less like John carpenter's "THE THING" as "night of the living dead" is to RESIDENT EVIL. where u have to guess which crew members have been infected by a plant like organism. the special X-RAY like goggles, not only detect infected sailors, but can also locate hidden items as well. the zombies/monsters may not be as terrifing as EVIL's but they come damn near close. my only gripe about CARRIER, would be, the sluggish controls lack of weapons and of course bad voice acting. but nonetheless JALECO should be praised for producing they're first attempt at the "survival horror" genre.

if your'e a RE fan like me,take a pass on BLUE STINGER and pick this one up instead. you wont be disapointed.

Not brilliant, but still a good try

First off, I'd like to thank Jaleco for the effort they put into making this game. It's not the greatest in the world of survival entertainment, but it was a good first effort, and I wanted to acknowledge that. The game has a fair amount of good and bad points, and I'm going to go over all of them, starting with the bad just to get them out of the way, and to end this review on more of a high note since I did enjoy this game more than I didn't enjoy it.

The obvious bad point was the voices, and voice acting. The main character, Jack, had almost no inflection in his voice no matter what he was talking about, or doing. I would have liked to have been able to turn his voice off, and have just read what was going on, it was so annoying at times. Plus, watching his mouth still move for a long time after he was finished talking was a true annoyance. I did get used to him after about an hour, but I wish they had found someone who could have showed just a little more emotion.

The graphics were a bit chunky and blocky at times too, and the camera angles were almost too excessively annoying, especially going around corners, where if you were the character, you would be able to see down the hall, but the view they give you on the screen is still a third person look, and you can't see down the hall until you actually start moving down it.

Okay, now onto the good. The weapon selection in the game isn't all that big, but you do get what you need to accomplish your goals so I don't really have a complaint about that. As a matter of fact, I liked the fact that you were given a weapon that had unlimited use. It's called a welder(why I don't know), and seems strange to be a weapon, but it's very effective against single zombies, and some of the smaller creatures you run across. This allows you to save your ammunition for some of the tougher zombies, and the bigger monsters you run into later. I never came close to running out of ammunition by using the welder a lot early in the game when the creatures were weaker.

Another good thing was the BEM-T3 scope, which you are given early in the game. This device allows you to look at people, and tell if they are still human or have been affected by the Ark virus. It also allows you to see through lockers, through plants to look for hidden doors, and also helps negate the bad camera angles you will suffer when going around corners. I would walk around a corner, and then pull out the scope to check down the hall, because you are then given a first person view, and can check for hiding creatures.

Another bonus was an unlimited inventory, so you didn't have to stockpile weapons or health drinks, or anything else. You were able to carry everything you picked up without having to fuss about whether or not you really needed to carry it at that time, and then run back somewhere to retrieve something you needed when getting to a certain door or area. So, kudos to Jaleco for this fine first effort. The story line might have been a bit weak, and all my questions about Ark and the motivations of some of the characters weren't answered, but overall, it was a good try, and the next time they might make a more polished, complete product. I'm willing to wait and see.

Resident evil take-off

this game is a great game, if you've read any of my other reviews then you know that i dont give games good reviews because i dont want to be mean, i speak the truth...this game is a definite take off of resident evil. the button control is the same, if capcom found out about this, jaleco would be in big trouble. i am giving this a good rating because it is like resident evil, resident evil is awesome. so this game is awesome. you should buy the game, but find a walkthrough for it, too because otherwise it would be too hard. This game is kindof cool, but it is worth the money

Don't play at night !

Don't play this one at night ! Not because it's scary. It's just dark and hard to see during the day ! This is a pretty good game ! Good sound, great solid grphics and models, Good story and it's a good way to pass the time until Resident Evil Code: Veronica. I bought this game on a whim and at first I had trouble getting the hang of the controls. Once that little snag got ironed out however it was fun as hell from then on! This game isn't that scary but can get nerve racking espcially with some of the masterfully crafted ambient sounds they use. The music is almost a parody of standard Sci-Fi horror. The graphics are good some of the characters are just plain goofy looking but the everything else is rock solid and clean looking. I recommed this fun little game ! It is a great way to warm up for RE:CV and a great way to get into the whole survival horror genre (if you havn't already)

The graphics are pretty, but not yet up to what the dreamcast is fully capablee of. however it is a good game and if there is a sequel i am sure the graphics will be better. the game is fun and interesting, the story although not really new is still well done. the camera angles are at times awkard, as is at times enemies are right on the other side of the door, attacking before the player has a chance. but for all it's faults it is a enjoyable and fun game.

Cousin of Resident Evil

This game is so much like Resident Evil, it's not even funny.
However, it's not exactly the same storyline. Carrier has a different unique storyline. It's just the gameplay, the angles and bad acting. Of course you got to have bad acting in one of these games. I give it four because Dreamcast didn't go over the edge using the same storyline as Resident Evil. Other than that it's a good game. Not a great game, but still good. I suggest you rent it instead.

Nice try, but...

As others have noted, the graphics in Carrier are pretty, and the story is decent for the genre. Unfortunately, the voice acting is beyond bad, and the controls are sloppy and hard to get used to.

I expect bad voice acting from horror games, but nothing this bad -- when you start laughing at the hysterical overacting, the story suffers a bit. The game is obviously translated from the Japanese -- the English dialog and the characters' mouth movements don't synch at all, and that's kind of distracting. Sure, it would have cost a bit more and taken some time to resynch to the English dialog, but it would have been a nice touch.

As for the controls, they could have been a lot better. It's almost impossible to run in a straight line with the analog stick, and moving with the pad is annoying. Also, while the fact that you can aim for various parts of your enemies is nice, it's annoying that you can't just fire without picking a spot -- you have to go through the "right trigger to aim, hold it down, press A to fire" dance every time. Additionally, the fact that you can't fire when using the nifty scope is amazingly frustrating.

If you really really like the survival horror genre, you could do worse than this, I suppose. But for the casual fan like me, it's probably better to wait for Code Veronica. As it is, I'm trying to decide whether I should sell my copy before or after I finish it.

You can practically hear this game, Carrier, saying that as you play it, but, believe it or not, it has enough creepy details to warrant a look. It is a rip-off, pretty much, but there's some good original elements thrown in for good measure and plenty of monster-blasting carnage to soak in. The cinemas are pretty humorous as well, adding to the story. The fact it runs at a pretty good pace helps, too. You won't go too wrong.
