A Bright Cheery Cartoon of WWII

The Outfit has you performing missions in World War II Europe. You're the Allies, out to stop a rogue German soldier who is causing trouble.

There are certainly a ton of WWII games out there on the market, and many of them are excellent. The Outfit doesn't try to reinvent the wheel. This isn't a dark, realistic, drama-filled game like some others. Instead it goes for a more cheezy, cartoon-colored version of WWII where you're having reinforcements drop immediately from the sky and are blowing things up.

Whether that's good or bad for you of course depends on your personality. I have to say I like the realistic games, but I also understand that every single game shouldn't be exactly the same. There should be room out there for different styles.

It's sort of an odd mix. On one hand the graphics are very nice - the detailed brickwork on the ground, the clouds drift in the blue sky, the mouth animation while people speak. On the other hand, it's like an Oz version of the world. The grass is a bit too green. The rocks are a bit too shiny. I expect a horde of little children to pop out from the shrubbery and start singing, "It's a small world after all!"

The sound ties in with the cheesy design. There aren't moody, realistic commentaries or orchestral music. Instead you get cliches like "They sure have big mosquitoes in this part of France" that you get to hear repeatedly.

There are interesting aspects to the game. You get to be one of three main characters, each with his own special strengths and weaknesses. If you die, you respawn at a checkpoint that you can choose and can rotate to another character. As your health fades, your vision goes to black and white. Your enemy slaying earns you money which you can spend to improve your situation. You can blow up buildings or just watch the blades of grass wave in the wind.

On the other hand, some things are odd here. Units don't reliably use cover. The ragdoll physics are sometimes good and sometimes extremely bizarre. Whoever chose the acronym "F-U" for Field Units wasn't thinking very clearly.

All in all, I would recommend people rent this one first. Give it a play for a few hours. It might be that this lighthearted take on wargaming really appeals to you! On the other hand, it might be that you really prefer serious wargaming and would rather justkeep playing Call of Duty 2. It's best to know which way you will go before you pay for a full version.

Loads of Fun w/ Destruction on Demand

In the Outfit, you choose from three playable squad leaders - each has their own skills and weapons. The game has interactive surroundings and you can blow up about anything. As you complete mission objectives, you earn Field Units (FUs), that can be spent to order "Destruction on Demand(tm)" - air-dropped into the action at any time. With "Destruction On Demand(tm)" (D.O.D.) you can order in everything from tanks, jeeps, half-tracks to machine-guns and anti-tank weapons. You can also call in replacement soldiers anytime you need them. The vehicles each drive a little different, and sometimes you end up on the side of a mountain, but they are a lot of fun. Just watch out for rpg's or you will be blown up with the vehicle. The game supports 720p and 5.1 Dolby. The Outfit looks and feels good. I have really enjoyed this game and have played it for hours straight. It is somewhat different than Call of Duty, but special in it's own way. I highly recommend The Outfit for anybody who likes the war action games.

The Outfit Proves Games Don't Need all the Bells and Whisles to Be Fun

I am a gamer unphased by all of the new hyped up games with next generation graphics and sound released by the major game makers. Who needs all these games with the state of the art technology if they aren't fun? Nextly, the The Outfit's graphics and sound is much better than some give credit. Maybe the people playing this game don't have a good sound system and display setup. When I play this game with my Harman Kardon 240avr, the bombs rumble my room nicely.

THQ impresses me with The Outfit. Combine War Craft II Battlefield 1942 and you have the Outfit. Bringing in the heavy artillery to smash your opponent is extremeley fun. Even better is seeing your friend's face as he's getting clobbered. If you like a good war strategy game that is incredibly fun and addictive, try The Outfit.

A SYMPHONY OF DESTRUCTION!

I just rented this game but its outstanding, yes very cartoony, but it has striking features. like the very popular destruction on demand, were you get to order a veriety of weapons and vehicles, like sentury guns, to jeeps, to halftracks, to flame tanks- very cool, to modern tanks and alot more. There are three squad leaders with their own special weapons and ranks. you can form your own group of five, including you- and drive your squad through every terrain imaginable.

graphics are impresive but not as outstanding as the very popular COD2. this game is also not first person mode, which to some might suck. I'm actually thinking about buying this game, but I might buy battlefield 2. There both a equal amout of fun and destruction, in my opinion.

ALSO try battlefield 2, a great first person shooter.

Good But Don't Expect The Best

Despite what the other reviews might suggest to you - this isn't a 3rd person shooter. Much of the frustration that I imagine occurs from people randomly buying this is that they don't get that.

This is a tactical game played from a 3rd person p.o.v.. So it rewards things like setting up appropriate defences, initiative and learning the strengths of the characters (loosely all 3 characters have different attributes and weapons which include things like speed and purchasing objects). Played as a tactical game its lots of fun. You influence the battlefield by what you stratergize (e.g. call in airstrike to destroy that emplacement there, or use the points (their only resource, gained from killing people or getting your arse kicked) to call in a jeep to circle behind? You can influence the battle, but you cannot expect (ala mercenaries) to take an army on by yourself and win.

It is a good game - though not what you immediately expect. The singleplayer is frankly linear and grindable (you never actually die, just constantly respawn). Enjoyable for an hour or two but limited unless you gotta get all the acheivements.

Multiplayer varies completely on your connection and the standard of you and your opponents. good connection = sweet game. oh so sweet, especially with 6 players. Basically each player respawns with 4 soldiers every time they die. you also call down emplacements which are manned by soldiers. These soldiers are independent of you and run their own ai. depending on how you're playing, its possible to have spawned 4 soldiers, plus how ever many guns you've placed in the map, plus any soldiers left alive from your previous death = a lot, possibly over ten. multiply this by 6 and you realise why there's a problem with multiplayer lag and performance.

Smaller 1vs1 or 2vs2 games are more playable and lots of fun - outmanouvering your opponent to strike the death blow is tremendous fun and there are few issues with lag.

One major problem (acknowledged by the developers) is that the vehicles have really poor control. This didn't bother me too much, but it is frustrating. Oh and water kills you. bad bad bad idea.

I'm just going to give the nuts and bolts here.
The Outfit is not the same type game as the Call of Duty or Medal of Honor games. The Outfit more closely resembles old school shoot-em-up games like: Ikara Warriors, Heavy Barrel, and Mercs (I'm showing my age here). Lots of action, Lots of destruction, Lots of fun, but NOT realistic. The Graphics are amazing on a VGA monitor, the Sound is good, but not great (Repetitive), Vehicle controls are BAD, Animation is smooth and extremely detailed. This game is a great mindless buffet of carnage and mayhem. This game is NOT a historical or realistic take on WW2. If you don't heed this warning, you might be very unhappy with this! I myself enjoy the realistic games, but every once in awhile it is nice to just blow the hell out of things in a cartoonish manner. I feel that this game could have been done just as well on the original xbox. Anyone interested in this game should rent it first before purchasing. This type game is not for everyone, and the more discerning gamers might not be amused by it.

At first i gave it 3 stars based upon the demo, but revised this to 4 stars overall...after I rented the game and have since purchased it mainly for the xbox live gaming which ive found very fun.

If any of you have seen the movie Kelly's Heroes this is kinda like that in a way. You know when watching the movie that its not a serious war movie but a fun to watch exciting movie with guys behind the lines outnumbered, cracking jokes the whole way and blasting the enemy, not too realistic but fun...well that basically "The Outfit" xbox game.

The full version is better than the demo and ive enjoyed the campaign very much and this game is terrific on xbox live with team play or head to head.

The details in the weapons are great, the collateral damage from blasts is much better than on the demo and the rag doll effect is pretty cool. Driving vehicles was tough at first but now that ive played a while its become second hand and not difficult imo.I blasted through german defences and took the main objective only to have german reinforcements coming up from the rear. I had left a damaged tank on they way only to find the enemy had repaired the tank and was using it against me, lol. It is cartoonish, the movie clips are entertaining and the one liners are kinda funny imo....again kinda like the one liners in K.H. I have read over and over about the aiming of weapons. Remember this is in the 40's during WW2 not 2006 so laser guided aiming and pinpoint accuracy was not available and again imo seem to be accurate for the era the game is geared toward. Thats why the Allies would send 1,000 bombers or mass their artillery for effect...so dont expect pinpoint accuracy and no cruise missles.

I would say rent the game see if the game is for you. If you have xbox live its a MUST to try online if not then your missing out on the best part of the game. Also, its a little frustrating at first with the vehicles but practice then go online.

If your looking for a serious xbox WW2 game the two best IMO are Call of Duty 2 (xbox 360) and Sniper Elite (xbox) both of which are terrific WW2 games. However, for a fun light hearted game with terrific sound, realistic WW2 weapons and one liners is what you like try The Outfit.

THE OUTFIT is a great game with good graphics, gameplay and sound. It has a cool feature called Destruction On Demand wich allows you to purchase different vehicles ,from tanks, halftracks to jeeps. There is 3 squad leaders each for the Americans and Germans. It is a really fun game, with different multiplayer modes. Online games are three people per team. Overall this game is worth a buy.

Disappointed

The game itself is OKAY, however, after playing COD on XBOX360, I was very disappointed. After playing for hours and getting far in the game, I wasn't able to save the game I just played, and had to start all over. As a serious gamer, I can live with the glitches in the graphics etc, but not to be able to save a game when I got so far, is very disappointing.

I wish I had just rented the game first and not spent the $60.00.

Bought & played the game after Call of Duty on the 360. I found the outfit to be pretty disappointing and would not recommend it after playing COD.

I have not played it on XBox Live, so I cant speak to some of the other reviews that focused on this aspect of the game.
