Not a "bad game" but not great by any means

I've been a fan of the X-Men for a long time. So with X2 raking in millions at the box office, this would seem like as good a time as any for Activision to release a game based on the most popular X-Man, Wolverine. Well not quite.

Wolverine's Revenge is a decent game. For the X-Men fans they will surely like the opprotunity to run around as their favorite mutant. Unfortunately this game falls short in the execution. Thought the costumes that you unlock are nice, the game's engine is susupisciously similar to the Spider-Man PS2 engine. This lends it self to somewhat limiting gameplay. The games overall let down can be attributed to the actual gameplay. It falls apart becoming a series of hacking and slashing through various environments and beating up countless non-descript bad guys. With no checkpoints, an untimely demise will mean having to restart the level all the way at the begining. This can be frustating at times. The hightened sense mode is interesting but it's necessary to play the game in this mode for a while. And that slows down the pace of the action. For what the game lacks in depth of play it trys to make up for in terms of story line. The story is reinforced quite well throughout the game. But it's hardly enough to make up for some lackluster gameplay.

This game's strength is it's license. If you love the X-Men then this will be a good pick up. I didn't dislike this game, but I don't like it enough to recommend picking it up. Give it a rental and see if it grows on you. The best thing I could probably say is DO NOT pay full price for this. It's good, but there are better games you can spend your hard earned cash on right now.

Wolverine's Revenge Fails to Satisfy

I recently rented "Wolverine's Revenge" and I have to say it is one of the worst games ever developed. The idea was solid, but it simply wasn't executed well.

First of all, the voice of Wolverine is provided by Mark "Stop calling me Luke" Hamill and it shows. If you've ever seen "Batman: The Animated Series" it's easy to hear how similar Wolverine's voice is to the Joker's. To make matters more confusing, the game's cover features the actor who played Wolverine on the big screen, Hugh Jackman, although the game is completely devoid of his presence. Fortunately, the voice of Profesor Charles Xavier is provided by Jackman's co-star, Patrick Stewart. Of course, you're probably only interested in this particular game if you're a fan of the movies, so let's discuss the game play.

The enemy soldiers are extremely generic throughout each level and all of the bosses are simply no fun to fight. Each level is filled to the brim by faceless drones that quickly prove their worthlessness by dying in the exact same manner time-after-time, regardless of your actions. Once you kill all the soldiers that stand in Wolverine's way, you are treated to an extremely limiting and ultimately unsatisfying "fight" with one of Marvel's many key villains. Rather than having an all out brawl with each signature character, you must first figure out the permitted attack. Unfortunately, the game does not allow the player to fight without limitations. Endlessly jamming Wolverine's claws into Sabretooth, the Wendigo, or even Lady Deathstrike will do no good unless you do things the game's way and discover the only allowed attack.

In addition to a quirky fighting engine, one of the most frustrating aspects of the game is its layout, coupled with Wolverine's lack of abilities. While the player may extend or retract Wolverine's claws at will or make use of his feral abilities in an infared like atmosphere, it is impossible for Wolverine to scale the smallest ledge or snowbank even though his vertical jump easily clears the object or area in question.

Simply put, "Wolverine's Revenge" was a rushed product and it shows. If the development staff wasn't forced to release the game at the same time as "X2: X-Men United" 's theatrical release, it probably could have been a well polished, enthralling game. Unfortunately, that is not the case for this game.

A Dissapointing Game

I played this game, and soon I had concluded that this game was purely horrible. It seems like a game to look forward to when Spider-Man came out and it seemed fairly well. But Wolverine's Revenge is nothing like it, and is purely a dissapointing game. The gameplay is ok, but otherwise it seems like a really bad game. The graphics make the characters look horrible. Patrick Stewart is at least voicing Professer X's voice, which makes the sound pretty decent and the music is pretty good, but otherwise this game was one of the most dissapointing. The fighting isn't very good either, and the first boss battle against Sabretooth gets boring soon, because the battle is purely made out of jumping behind Sabretooth and grabbing him and throwing him into objects.

Unfinished

Wolverine's Revenge is a game in which you get to fight bad guys, activate switches, fight bosses, and, oh, fight more guys. The creators of WR were probably in a hurry to finish the game before X2 came out, and it seams somewhat unfinished.
The fighting in WR is repetetive and will get boring after a couple of hours. Once you hit someone, or someone hits you, you are locked in fighting mode until you can get out. It sometimes can be hard to do, and it gets very frustrating.
Perhaps the worst thing about this game is that is way to easy. Just fight some guys, find a corner to heal, and go on to the next bunch. I don't recomend this game, unless you are a huge Wolverine fan.

Just die hard Wolverine fans!

The thing is, there are so many superhero games around that sometimes it's hard to choose the right game. For me this game was right enough, i like very much the character wolverine, and nothing can make you feel more like wolverine as this game, not even the so over rated and over priced marvel's ultimate alliance.

In this game you can sheath and unsheath the adamantium claws anytime in the game, you can use your heightened senses to do almost anything (is like using the force but amazingly better), you can track enemies looking for their footprints or smelling them, and the most amazing thing is that you can surprise them and slash them with incredible finishing moves. Great graphics (looks like a tony hawk game), the sound (well that is how i thought wolverine would heard), the voice acting is superb, the game is very simple yet very complex and has enough to keep you busy.

Why only 4 stars? well, i never wondered how hard was to be wolverine, well, i can tell you, it's hard, very hard indeed, but that is also good 'cause it gives you the feeling that you're a superhero but that you aren't inmortal, yes, you've the healing factor (amazingly orchestrated by the way) but mines, bullets and other deadly stuff are just that, deadly. I've read something in the other reviews that said that bosses were fun and easy, well, i can tell you that the first was quite hard and the second was frustrating (i won't tell you who it is without spoiling the game for you).

I just loved this game when i have played it on the pc a long time ago and i was in love with it, i couldn't advance in it 'cause the game was choppy at that time but maybe that was because of my computer (you know all that stuff about the proper video card, the proper ram...) and from my experience with need for speed i knew that this one has to be better on the ps2, and it is a lot better 'cause it doesn't have all the glitches of the pc game.

This is the game, i love this game, but i'm a wolverine die hard fan, i can tell you that hulk (any of the two) is a better game than this one and more elaborated, but being wolverine just like wolverine, well this game does it, you're logan, the wolverine, and you have with that all the stuff included, the superhero glorious moments and the suffering moments also. Just like that, it's a must have if you have at least one comic book of wolverine in your house or if you like the character. But one thing... the game is hard and sometime frustrating (4 stars for that on the fun).
