A step up from even the original VF4.

Virtua Fighter 4 evolution has done the near impossible, make one of the best fighting games of all time even better. There is still all the depth and enjoyment of the original, while adding two more characters and the next level of Kumite mode, Quest mode! This mode is a challenging ongoing game where you make your name in every arcade in Tokyo, eventually getting to the center Arena, to become the best Virtua Fight in Japan. Yes, it is a bit tacky, but that is not what is important. Customizable characters get even better as a new array of items is found. You can also get new fighting modes in the central arena, like balance and a mode where you take extra damage when you hit the floor. The fighting moves have always been, and still are, incredibly complex and deep. This is one of the only games I have seen that includes evasion, counterattacks, throw evades, and rolls that allow you to avoid ground attacks. It takes a while to master, but once you get it, it is a very deep and ingenious control system. The reviewer that gave two stars seems to be what most people are that dont like VF4: impatient. He claims that it is too easy in quest mode, but by the time you progress throughout Tokyo, you begin to fight some fighters that are modeled after real people that are among the best VF players in the world. They also lack the patience to go to practice sessions and explore the numerous moves available to them. The only regretable thing to VF4 Evolution is the lack of training your own A.I., which is included in the original. Most VF4 fans can compensate by just whipping out their old copies. If you are new to the series and you want to play the A.I. training version, then I suggest that you buy VF4 and VF4 Evolution, they are only $20 each and are both well worth it. Overall, I would say that VF4 Evolution is a wonderful game that makes other fighting games, with the exception of Soul Caliber 2, look just plain silly. VF4 Evolution, in my opinion could even top the prowess of SC2. Buy this, or at least rent it, you will not regret it.

The first Virtua Fighter 4 came out around February in the States. When reviewers and gamers got their hands on this game, it brought fighting games to a whole new level. The level of innovation Virtua Fighter 4 carried was so phenomenal. It made most games like Tekken 4 and Soul Calibur 1 unacceptable to most gamers.

Granted, there were a lot of prettier looking fighting games out there in the visual category, but Virtua Fighter 4 was fighting to the next level. Fighting games were no longer about just bashing on buttons and fighting one character after another to beat the game. It was much more then that, Virtua Fighter 4 offered gamers innovative gameplay that was so deep there were no limits. It offered the famous "Kumite" mode that allowed you to fight an infinite number of matches, and if you fought the character correctly or completed certian expectations in a match, you were rewarded with an item to customize your character. The gameplay was so deep and so strategic it left no boundaries to defeating an enemy.

Now what does this expansion, Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution, bring to the old Virtua Fighter 4 that was already perfect? Well, it brings more perfection to the already perfect fighting game.

It offers a new "Quest" mode that is a lot like "Kumite" mode in the first VF4 (Virtua Fighter 4). In quest mode youu fight an endless amount of matches completing various task assigned to your character of your own choice. Now, when you complete a task, you are rewarded with cash or an item, and sometimes both. When you get cash, you can go to the VF4E (Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution) store and buy various items. Some items allow you to customize your fighters appearance, others allow you to watch hidden movies and videos. When you fight in matches you are sometimes thrown ranking matches, ranking matches allow you to advance to a higher rank (duh!). This is just the tip of the iceberg of what you do in Quest mode.

The graphics have improved a great deal as well, they are much more smoother and beautiful then the original VF4. The levels have been revamped from the old ones as well. Some levels have minor changes, others have been completely changed. The character models have been changed a little bit to, some have new outfits and other have new default clothing.

There are now two new characters in VF4E, they both look like Tekken designed characters. Goh, the assasian from Japan, uses Judo which is slow but if mastered is very deadly. Brad, a Kick Boxer from Italy, he uses the lighting quick martial art style, Muay Thai. They both are capable of kicking some serious hide, just make sure you go through training mode first.

Training mode is very deep and intuitive, it explains everything you need to know about mastering VF4E and its deep gameplay. It teaches you combo's, attacks, strategies, and everything else you need to know about VF4E's gameplay. I highly recommend going through this mode before entering any other mode.

The control is excellent, the buttons feel like they are all in the right places. It is very simple and easy to understand, you feel right at home once you pick the controller up. The shoulder buttons on the PS2 Dual Shock controller help a great deal because they are basically a combination of the regular buttons on the button pad.

VF4E also features a "Anniversary" mode in the options menu, it allows you to play the original Virtua Fighter from the old days! It has a few minor changes from the original, such as it has all the new fighters on it. But it still sports the old VF4 graphics and levels!

If that wasn't enough reason to buy the game, buy it for the sole reason that it costs a mere 20 bucks! Thats less than half the price of Soul Calibur 2, plus in my opinion, it is a lot better then Soul Calibur! You have absolutely NO reason not buy this freakishly awesome fighting game, even if you don't own a PS2, I suggest you buy one for this game!

First I have owned every version of VF From Sega Saturn to Dreamcast to PS2. Virtua Fighter 2 is arguably the greatest fighting game, possibly greatest game ever. VF3 was a step forward but had some problems. Vf4 Picks up were VF2 left off. Evolution is the deepest game on the market period.

Please remember people that the game was designed for use with a joystick. There are a lot of Maneuvers that just are not possible with the standard controller. Also this game takes hell of a lot of practice to even be half decent. It is like its own martial art. They have professional players in Asia.

Yu Suzuki's team has done a lot of homework on their martial arts on this one. This is real stuff. Some is fake yes (hello! its a video game) but for the most part realism has always been the staple of the VF series.

People that reviewed this game and gave any thing less then 4 stars no nothing of real gaming.

I was very happy when this game came out. I love the virtua fighter series and my special interest is in this one. It is the upgrade of VF4. This game features 2 new charcters with a total of 15 playable martial artists. The original attacks and strikes for the pervious 13 are somewhat the same with little real change. This game also features a new Quest mode that will take the place of kumite. I was mostly surprised at this. Instead of playing fight after fight,getting an outfit every 2 ranks, and playing forever to obtain any items that you might want; it turned out quite different. First off, You play in different saga locations and once you are entered and and have played in the tournoment you can progress to another location. To me it seems a lot easier to progress through the ranks than in VF4. You also deal with money and if you complete the quest orders in a certian place you can sometimes get a few items, as well as scoring some cash. But, like some viewers have said, a lot of times the quest orders are very hard and the players can get too hard farther up. I do like the fact that you buy items, hair color, eye color, and new/old win poses from the shop throughout the game. You can also aquire new hair styles for your characters. Also in quest mode, if you go to the Event Square, you have a chance to re-visit the old VF4 playing grounds and music. All together the graphics and music are awesome, as well as the game play and different martial arts styles. Do not think that this game isn't up to Tekken standards either because to me it is the best hardcore fighting game you can buy with nothing but fighting.

In the past i was reluctant to buy fighting games. With so many bad fighters trying to do well off the success of street fighter and mortal kombat i was just fed up with fighting games. And even though I did enjoy the tekken series of playstation it's just that paying that much for a fighting game seemed useless since after a few days of fun filled fighting the game quickly got old.

With Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution Sega really got it right though. They take a very fun fighting game with a great engine and make it even better with the amazingly awesome quest mode. In Quest mode you take your virtua fighter skills up against other virtua fighter players in local arcades and try to win the tournements each arcade holds. So it's like playing a game within a game and it turns out really cool and innovative.

Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution is a great buy as well it starts out on the market as a greatest hits and a low low price of 20 dollars. So everyone who owns a playstation 2 should have this game by now. It's the greatest fighting game since, well... ever.

At 5/5 it gets one of my only perfect scores so far.

I'm new to the Virtua Fighter series so when I first bought it, I wanted to return it I thought it sucked. But I gave it a chance. Now I'm glad I didnt! It's possibly the best fighting game out there right now! At first if you dont know what you're doing, fighting can seem very basic. Just various kicks and punches. But this game is all about technique! Unlike Tekken where you just by bash a few buttons and doing a couple memorized combos will know out your opponent, a skilled Virtua Fighter player (like the ones you'll face in the Quest mode) will knock you senseless if you even try to just button bash your way to a win

. In Virtua Fighter you actually learn to fight in your players own style. The training mode is like stepping into a dojo and learning a martial art. Just about every character can do a multitude of moves like evades, take downs, counterattacks, reversals... the list goes on. Timeing is everything too. You can actually reverse your apponents moves using them against him! Very cool. And each character has thier own distinct real world fighting style. Some fighters like the shoulin monk Lau, can even switch styles in the middle of a fight! Overall the fighting engine deserves a big fat 10 all across the board.

The Graphics and menu interface are another thing though. Although they're very good , Tekken takes the prize in that catagory. The menue graphics are not as good either. The Sound is also not as good.While the in game sound when fighting is excellent, the player voice overs of the english speaking fighters before and after a fight are kind of cheezy.

Overall, If you love fighting games and want a reall challenge with lots of replay value, get this now.

Tekken 4 is not a very good Tekken game. Tekken Tag beats it. Evolution beats standard VF4. Evolution is what you should own instead of Tekken 4. Why? Well the graphics are nearly as good as Tekken 5 and that was 2 years ago, so VF5 will probably be awesome to look at. Tekken 5 has more characters though but look at the price... it is twice the cost of this one that has less characters.

GMR magazine: 10/10 "Best fighting game ever made"-Playstation magazine EGM: 10/10, 9/10, 10/10 After seeing those reviews, I thought I HAVE to get this game!!! Boy, do I wish I never thought that. I was absolutely dumbstruck at how bad it was. You kick people with about 5 different moves, and you can push them off the ring for a ring out SO easily. The voicing doesn't make this exciting at all. Quest mode was supposed to be the most highly addicting mode and the most deep mode in any fighting game ever made...It was boring. Kick kick, punch, block, yay I got a new costume. Who cares? I also noticed the average customer rating for this game was 5 stars/5 stars...WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE??? You can choose from about 12 different people, which are very similar. DON'T BUY THIS GAME!!! People may think I'm weird, but hey; I can have my own opinion!!! Buy Soul Calibur 2, a weapon fighter that is the best fighting game ever made. Please, don't waste your money on this.

Virtua fighter 4 is a great fighting game. The best out of all the next gens. And now, you get improved visuals and sound, more characters, more levels, and more organazation. But I haven't even hit upon the best part, it's only 20 bucks. That's right only 20 bucks. So your looking at the best fighting game of the system with an expansion pack at only 20 dollars. THIS IS THE BEST DEAL ON THE PS2 BAR NONE.

This game is exceptionally good, even none fighting fans will enjoy this breed of game. THis game is addictive and brilliant though, don't forget it. A must buy for the system.

One word: amazing. If you are a true fighting game fan, this is a must buy. This one is an enhanced version of VF4, with two new characters and a new mode, called quest mode. In quest mode, you make your way through "arcades", imitating real arcade tournaments, in an UFC style; very cool. In the graphics departament, one thing i did notice is the improved anti-alising feature, eliminating the jaggies of the other version. All the characters received new moves (better ones). Nice addition is the special "10th Anniversary Edition", making the game look like VF1. Worth of purchase even if you already own VF4. Is, indeed, an evolution.
