Gamecube X-Men Legends 2: ROA

My son got this for Christmas - the disc didn't work - comes up unreadable. Amazon quickly sent a replacement with the same results. I am left confused if there are lots of corrupt discs or is there something wrong with the gamecube. All of his other games work with his gamecube. Have others seen a problem with thses disc?

While it's not the worst game...

You'd do well to avoid the gamecube version of this game, if you have a choice. The graphics are overly compressed so that everything looks blurry, and to make things worse, there is no contrast between your tiny character models and the admittedly detailed background. This can result in you sitting right in front of your TV to tell what's going on. That might be worth it if the game were a little more FUN. The levels and enemies are pretty bland and cheesy. My girlfriend and I were bored by the second level. There are at times weird text formatting bugs in the written dialogue, and some of the spoken dialogue sounds like it comes straight out of a backstage professional wrestling argument. Imagine Macho Man as Sabretooth and you're close. I don't recommend this game if you're over 13 years of age, you'll probably find it dull and sophomoric.

This game is a great follow-up to the first game but there is a programming problem. There are supposed to be items dropped when defeating enemies or breaking containers but at some point in the game this will inexplictively stop. Without health and energy packs and especailly tech bits (the games currency) play will eventually come to a standstill. Even Forge has no gear for you to buy anymore. Seaching the web I found that this has happened to other players and seemingly at random parts of the game. I suppose PC players can expect a patch but what about gaming platforms? I would suggest waiting to purchase this great game until this problem is resolved.

If you want a brief summary of this game, read my review's title. It is that simple. I personally wish there would be more enhancements and improvements, but if you loved the first game, you're gonna probably have a blast with this game. Otherwise, read on...

The story is very simple, the evil Apocalypse, one of the comic series' most intimidating villains, is loose. And it's up to the heroic X-Men and terrorist Brotherhood of Mutants to put their differences aside and stop him. If I made this story sound too simple, that's because Activision doesn't seem to really care about its plot. Sure, there are a few beautifully-rendered cutscenes that are simply stunning. However, the same awkward comic-ey graphics are brought back the in-game scenarios...for better or worse.

The graphical style hasn't changed much. The camera is the same, as is the animation quality. The models look a little better, but they're still not terrific. Also, the in-game cinematics look clunky and cheesy. The same pop-up windows that express dialogue are back. And the transitions from in-game cutscenes to the combat is still way too jarring and unsmooth. The mutant powers all look fantastic, though.

The voice-acting is hit-or-miss, just like last time. Patrick Stewart reprises his role as team leader Professor Xavier. The cast from the last game are back, and sound more convincing and less campy. There are some really bad spots, however. Mainly it's the villains who sound pretty pathetic. Sabretooth, Mystique, Omega Red...they all sound terrible. Am I to understand that Activision spent their actor budget entirely on Patrick Stewart?

The music is pretty forgettable, but it's not to meant to be the focus. I do wish some effort went into that area, too.

However, the most annoying feature in this sequel is the level design. I absolutely grew frustrated with it. The game opens up in the murky and confusing Genosha jungles, and well...let's just say that the X-Mansion ain't what you want it to be. Where's the color? Where's the sense of awe and inspiration that the first game tackled? This game looks depressed, which is how you're gonna feel when you realize just how big these levels are. And what is with traversing halfway through a level, only to have Professor X summon you back to homebase, only to have you return to the same land you just came so close to dominating? I don't mind increasing the size of the maps, or revisiting them, because there are tons of secrets and powerups to find. But when the objectives are dull, and the enemy AI seems to be tougher but not smarter, then I just can't understand what's going on with this game.

Multiplayer is also a mixed bag. You see, with one player your teammates are strong, but having multiple players would better utilize your team. But, just two players can be frustrating because you don't always know what's going on this game, and having different opinions on what to explore first is annoying.

The combat is smooth though. I never experienced slowdown in the framerate at all, and the GameCube controller suits the game just fine. In fact, for this game I think it's better than the PS2 and X-Box controllers. The environments are just as destructible, the combos are still here, and beating the crap out of soldiers, creatures, and other mutants is always a blast!

I had fun with this game, and admit that this series is still fun. Characters now have multiple costumes, secrets are even more plentiful, and abilities and powers are even more upgradable. But, I can't shake the feeling that this game didn't try hard enough. Gameplay should always the top priority when trying to create a video game, and Activision got it right. But that doesn't mean that presentation should suffer to the maximum. Instead of making the levels huge, make them either better-looking. Or, give the objectives more depth and texture, so that we players will actually "want" to return, as opposed to "feeling obligated". Going to a marked spot on the map, only to find out that it's going to give me a dull conversation and more enemies to beat up, just isn't enough. The gameplay is just fine, and never needed work in the first place. I forgave the first "X-Men Legends" game's shortcomings because it was a freshman's effort. But I actually would rather play that entry than this one. The levels are more fun and the story doesn't drag as much. After finishing the second game, it's time for this series to evolve!

Like the 2nd movie, the 2nd Legends game disappoints...

X-men Legends was a, pardon the cliched pun, x-cellent surprise in the 2004 holiday rush. It featured an interesting storyline that was a take off the X-men comics, all out action and brawling, a deep customization system to develop your characters, challenging yet thankfully and a great selection of characters, which also involved using strategy to keep up a well balanced team suitable for each mission.

The sequel features some new improvements. First off, there's some slightly improved graphics. Second, we have deeper customization. Finally, there's a whole new roster of characters, some new, some old, and some bad, such as Magento or Juggernaut. With these features, it definitely seems like the sequel would be an improvement.

Unfortunately, there's a big detractor in this game. It's easy. Over-the-top incredibly easy. I am not joking when I say that it takes about 5 hours to beat this game, even when you make sure to explore every area.

Enemies(particularly bosses) that were challenging foes in combat from the original now can all be dispatched with a few simple blows. Areas that made use of specific powers(such as say, having Iceman build a bridge for the others to cross) can now be passed easily via an extra route or a switch, which pretty much kills having to switch for other members. Extra items to fulfill sidequests can now be found along the main path. With the game only coming out a year after the first, it seems like the developers made all the stuff for the game up, then rushed to put it all in without adding any difficulty whatsoever.

The game is still worth a rental just to check it out, but overall, the original Legends game is just far more satisfying and fun. Hopefully if there's another sequel, it won't be rushed out as quickly.

If you're an X-Man...please stand up.

X-Men Legends (released almost a whole year ago!) re-vitalized the X-Men video game franchise. In combining its quasi RPG action hybrid with classic video game button mashing it created the most comphresive and (errrr) LEGENDARY X-men experiences. Now with fans begging for more, X-Men Legends 2 is finally here. Worth it? You bet? Legendary? Not so much.

The game is a great, fun, and vibrant experience. Fans of the X-Men with jump right in and assemble a team of their favorite heroes. Folks not familiar with the history might not find this one as readily accessable (due to the lack of any history or set up). The graphics are clear and the voice work and sound effects have been amped up too.

But nothing is perfect. The game does lack the sense of story and purpose that Legends 1 presented so well. The players is thrown into this story with many things assumed and unexplained. Players who completed the first game may be familiar with the set up, but lots of action has happened with huge chunks of the story left unexplained.

While the game does allow you to pick from 15 characters at the start, the rosters seems a bit random and (again) unexplained. The inclusion of the Brotherhood characters is great and works with the some of the previous X-Men stories (in print and film). But the lack of diversity is evident. It would have been far cooler to have everyone from the first one back for round 2 added with the new characters. All the characters have newer and cooler powers to play with and props goes to the programmers for working well with Scarlet Witch's probability mutation.

Another issue is the cluttered presentation. The fonts are a bit same and some of the screens are packed full of info. A cleaner, clearer style would have been far easier to work with in game.

The gameplay works well and is fun regardless of the team you assemble. Fans with of course pick their favorites, but the designers worked quite well with the character roster making it more effective and efficent this time around. Each character will answer the call of other teammates and sometimes using certain characters will cause a different reaction with NPC's that you run across.

Even though the story is a bit weak and the playable characters may seem off, X-Men Legends 2 is still a great game with plenty of stellar qualities. Decent graphics, amped up game play, new items, more characters, and extra ablities all make this a worth while addition.

Good use of licensing, average game overall

On occasion I get into what I call "moods": instead of randomly putting in a music CD, it tends to be one specific artist until something new catches my attention. Lately I've been in a big comic book kick, more notably, X-Men, so it makes sense I'd check this game out. Ironically I haven't beaten the first Legends yet but this game has a new story that you don't really need the first one to enjoy. While it is awesome to use X-Men characters, some of the gameplay designs just seem underdeveloped as well as other concepts.

Story: As you can probably tell, the game centers around the Age of Apocalypse storyline as him and his 4 Horsemen capture a couple X-Men and leads an assault on Earth. Professor X's X-Men has to reluctantly team up with the Brotherhood in order to bring down this powerful menace. Their trek will take them to the Savage Land, mutant city Genosha as well as Canada and Egypt.

Graphics: Basically a more nicer looking Legends with a noticeable cel-shaded look to everything. The in-game graphics are okay but nothing that spectacular. Certain environments just look repetitive while the characters aren't super detailed. However the FMV looks awesome and one particular one involving an air-strike is just as good as anything in cinema.

Sound/Music: The music is pretty forgettable. It fits the scenes well but once the thing's over, you can't remember anything about it. The voice acting is kind of a mixed bag from the good such as Xavier to Kitty Pryde to Forge to kinda bad such as Toad, the Ahnuld-sounding Colossus and pretty much every raspy voiced villain in the game.

Gameplay: The game features many playable characters and some unlockable ones. While you do get fan favorites such as Gambit, Wolverine or Nightcrawler(teleporting as never been so much fun), some questionable entries such as Scarlet Witch or Sunfire seem a bit strange. Would've been nice if they included Beast, Angel or Psylocke, or even Kitty Pryde. Instead they're relegated to NPC status, except Psylocke who doesn't appear at all.

You get weak and strong fighting buttons but each characters has special moves. Holding R and pressing either A, B, X or Y, you'll activate a special move such as Wolverine diving with his claws to Gambit throwing his trademark exploding trading cards to Colossus doing a huge punch. Only problem is that some seem a bit too familiar such as the women and some powers just seem kinda lackluster. Is the game difficult? Kind of. Some are simply easy while there will be sections that will drive you insane cause of how cheap a boss is or running out of health packs.

Should you get it? If you're an X-Men fan than definately. If you're not, I suggest giving it a rental first.

why I give this four it's like the same thing. Why I still love it so much well now people you get to use way more characters, attacks, and two kinds of extreme powers let me talk. Well last time it was just the x-men as we all know, but now you got the brother hood like scarletwitch, magneto, juggernaut, and more even. Beast isn't in this one I know very sad the list is still very varied though. Plus some additional characters who I don't know about some people, but gave me much more replay value. Like one unlockable character who isn't that good, but feels like a mixture of bishop and nightcrawler is deadpool who is very useful, but that's all I'm saying. Well like I said not musch else to say except bigger levels more hours of play time and the new characters I say rent it then decide if you want it I just got it cause I loved loved number one so much it's still a good game though.
